14 COACHING STAFF MIKE HAINES HEAD COACH Kalamazoo College, th season - WMU Record Record (12) Just the second head coach in the program s 12-year history, Mike Haines begins his 11th season at Western Michigan. Bringing stability and experience, Haines is the third-longest tenured coach in the Mid-American Conference. In three of the past five years, Haines has guided Western Michigan to a topthree finish in the MAC, highlighted by a MAC Tournament Championship in That same year, WMU qualified for its first NCAA Tournament in school history, upsetting nationally-ranked Illinois in the first round of the College Cup. In 2005, Haines guided WMU to its best start ever in league play (7-1), knocking off two NCAA Tournament teams and earning a regional ranking. The Brown & Gold also rattled off six straight wins, the second longest win streak in school history. Under Haines direction, Western Michigan has made eight MAC postseason appearances, reaching the semifinals on three occasions. His teams have recorded a.500-or-better league record in seven of the past nine seasons and have recorded double-digit overall win totals on five occasions. At the same time, Haines has coached 10 All-MAC players who have earned a total of 16 All-MAC certificates and three All-Great Lakes Region selections. Four of his first-year players have also been named to the MAC All-Freshmen Teams. Additionally, Haines athletes get the job done in the classroom, as 10 players have collected 12 Academic All-MAC honors, and one academic all-district award. Taking over the WMU program on Aug. 11, 1998, Haines was no stranger to the Kalamazoo community. For two seasons ( ), Haines coached next door at his alma mater, Division III Kalamazoo College. He directed the Hornet women to a record and a pair of second place finishes in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA). His 1997 squad captured a school-record 18 wins and reached the NCAA Tournament. A Kalamazoo native, he directed the Kalamazoo Quest through its inaugural season in the W-2 League of the United Systems of Independent Soccer Leagues (USISL), which consists of pro and collegiate players and is the highest level of women s soccer played in the United States. A USSF C licensed coach, Haines success also extends to the prep ranks, where twice he has been honored on the state level first as Class C Private School Coach of the Year for the boy s team at Hackett Catholic Central in 1995 then as Class B-C-D Coach of the Year for the Hackett girls in Haines led Hackett to the 1995 Class C boys title with a 22-2 record and guided the Irish girls to three consecutive state finals ( ) with an overall record of Haines received his bachelor s degree from Kalamazoo College in He lettered four seasons for the Hornets ( ), earning All-MIAA Second Team honors twice and captaining the 1992 squad. Haines is married to the former Kristen Cooper and the couple has two daughters, Kasey (7) and Anna (5).
15 SUZIE GRECH ASSISTANT COACH Michigan, 2005 Second season Suzie Grech begins her second season as assistant coach at Western Michigan. Grech has coached at both the high school and collegiate levels and was a standout goalkeeper at the University of Michigan. The Philadelphia, Pa., native will be involved in all facets of the program at WMU, and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the goalkeeping unit. Grech arrived in Kalamazoo after spending the 2007 preseason with her alma mater as a volunteer assistant coach. She also served as the assistant girl s soccer coach at Pioneer High School during the 2007 season. Prior to the 2008 season Grech spent a week in Belize with Peacework, an organization in Blacksburg, Va. Grech and others helped out with construction projects for schools and helped coached students. She helped out with three other coaches, Matt Gwilliam (Virginia Tech), Erica Demers (Grand Valley State), and Scott Letts (Marshall). In addition to their coaching duties, they also passed out soccer equipment to the kids provided by Peacework. Prior to her stint around Ann Arbor, Grech was an assistant at Marshall for two seasons, acting as the goalkeeper coach. With the Thundering Herd, she was in charge of technical and tactical training of the goalies and assisted with on-field instruction. She also was highly involved in recruiting, travel and other administrative duties. Grech, pictured left, coaching local children from Belize on their footwork and dribbling. Grech played at Michigan from , and left the women s soccer program as the all-time leader in goals-against average and shutouts, ending her Wolverine career with a record of Her Michigan teams made four NCAA appearances in 2000, 2001, 2002 (Elite Eight) and 2003 (Sweet Sixteen), and in 2001, she earned Second Team All-Big Ten and All-Great Lakes Region honors. Grech also participated internationally for Spain, where she earned a silver medal at the European Women s U-18 Championships in 1999 and She garnered six International Caps with the full national team, and 14 International Caps with the U-18 national team. From 2003 to 2005, she coached at Brighton High School in Brighton, Mich., and served as an assistant coach for the University of Michigan s Soccer Club. Grech graduated from the University of Michigan with a bachelor s degree in physical education in 2005 and received her master s degree in sports administration from Marshall in She holds a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) National B License and has a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) advanced national goalkeeping diploma. 20 UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT - DR. JOHN M. DUNN Dr. John M. Dunn became the eighth president of Western Michigan University on July 1, His official inauguration took place on March 24, WESTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY He was appointed to the post by the WMU Board of Trustees in April, following a nationwide search. Prior to coming to WMU, Dunn served as interim chancellor at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Before accepting that appointment, he held the position of provost and vice chancellor at SIUC. An educator for more than 30 years, Dunn was dean of the University of Utah s College of Health before moving to SIUC, holding that post from 1995 to Before that, he was at Oregon State University for 20 years, last serving as associate provost there from 1990 to His earlier positions at Oregon State included dean of Health and Human Performance, chair of the Department of Exercise and Sport Science and director of the university s Special Physicaland Motor Fitness Clinic. Since moving to Michigan, President Dunn has been actively engaged with state and community efforts that focus on quality-of-life issues and enhancing economic development. By appointment of Gov. Jennifer Granholm, he represents the University and West Michigan as a member of the Michigan Strategic Economic Investment and Commercialization Board. He also is a member of the boards of the Bronson Healthcare Group, First National Bank, Southwest Michigan First and the WMU Foundation as well as the governing boards of both the Greater Kalamazoo Area United Way and the Gilmore Keyboard Festival. Dunn, who was named Southern Illinois interim chancellor in November 2006, had previously served as provost and vice chancellor there since He says his interest in the WMU position was piqued by the similarities between WMU and SIU, a research university with more than 21,000 students, an extensive portfolio of grants and contracts, a number of major research centers and a historical background as a state teachers college. Internationally known for his research and writing about the long-term health of individuals with disabilities, Dunn is the author of more than 50 professional papers and book chapters. He is a past president of the Research Consortium of the American Alliance for Health Physical Education, Recreation and Dance; past editor of Quest, a professional publication for kinesiology scholars; and president-elect of the American Academy of Kinesdiology and Physical Education.
