WMU shocked ninthranked Illinois, 2-0, on a chilly evening in Champaign. The Illini held a commanding edge in shots (18-5) and corners (9-1), but goalkeeper Katie Perz was unflappable, earning the shutout with four saves. 12 COACHING STA F F Haines has guided the Broncos to three-straight, top-three finishes in the MAC, highlighted by a MAC Tournament Championship in That same year, WMU qualified for its first NCAA Tournament, upsetting nationallyranked Illinois in the first round. Mike Haines Kalamazoo, 1993 Ninth Just the second head coach in the program s 11- year history, Mike Haines begins his ninth campaign with the Soccer Broncos. He is the thirdlongest tenured coach in the Mid-American Conference. Haines was no stranger to the Kalamazoo community when he was named to WMU s post on Aug. 11, The Kalamazoo native directed the Kalamazoo Quest through their inaugural season in the W-2 League of the United Systems of Independent Soccer Leagues (USISL). The W- League, consisting of pro and collegiate players, is the highest level of women s soccer played in the United States. During his time at WMU, Haines has guided the program to eightstraight MAC postseason appearances, reaching the semifinals on three occasions. His teams have recorded seven consecutive seasons with a.500-or-better league record. ZOLTON COHEN At the same time, Haines has coached 10 All-MAC players who have earned a total of 16 All-MAC certificates and three All-Great Lakes Region selections. In 2005, Haines guided WMU to its best start ever in league play (7-1), knocking off two NCAA Tournament teams and earning a regional ranking. The Brown & Gold also rattled off six straight wins, the second longest win streak in school history. A look at Haines year-by-year highlights since he took over the fledgling program in 1998: 2004 Recorded a road record and defeated Ball State in the opening round of the MAC Tournament Posted a overall record, the most wins in school history and went undefeated in 10 home matches Captured the inaugural Bronco Soccer Classic Tallied 13 goals en route to the Binghamton adidas Soccer Classic title, the program s first-ever tournament championship Advanced to the MAC Tournament Semifinals. That run included an opening round victory over rival Central Michigan, the first tourney win in program history Defeated UNLV, Valparaiso and Northern Illinois Recorded first win with a 2-1 decision over Detroit followed by a victory over Central Michigan. For two seasons ( ), Haines coached next door at ZOLTON COHEN his alma mater, Division III Kalamazoo College. He directed the Hornet women to a record and a pair of second place finishes in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA). His 1997 squad captured a school-record 18 wins and reached the NCAA Tournament. A USSF "C" licensed coach, Haines success also extends to the prep ranks, where twice he has been honored on the state level first as Class C Private School Coach of the Year for the boy s team at Hackett Catholic Central in 1995 then as Class B-C-D Coach of the Year for the Hackett girls in Haines led Hackett to the 1995 Class C boys title with a 22-2 record and guided the Irish girls to three consecutive state finals ( ) with an overall record of GARY SHOOK Haines received his bachelor s degree fro m Kalamazoo College in He lettered four seasons for the Hornets ( ), earning All- MIAA Second Team honors twice and captaining the 1992 squad. 13 COACHING STA F F Matt Kellogg Butler, 2000 Third The 2006 campaign will mark Matt Kellogg s second season as full-time assistant coach with the Western Michigan women s program. Erin Carlson Volunteer Coach Michigan State, 2004 Second Erin Carlson embarks on her second season with the Brown & Gold. She works primiarly with Bronco goalkeepers. Kellogg worked with the men s and women s teams on a volunteer basis in 2004 and has played a key role in the program s summer camps for the past two years. Kellogg has been heavily involved in the West Michigan soccer community for several years. He has held coaching positions with the Michigan Olympic Development Program, Kalamazoo Kingdom and Plainwell High School. He currently serves as an assistant coach for the 1989 birthyear Olympic Development Program class. He also served as the head women s coach at Kalamazoo College in Eight of the student-athletes he recruited went on to earn all-conference accolades. A native of East La n s i n g, Mich., Kellogg was a member of the men s soccer team ( ) at Butler University, where he graduated with a degree in marketing in He also earned a master s in sports administration from WMU in Carlson was a four-year letterwinner at Michigan State ( ), starting for the Spartans in goal her senior campaign. She earned Big Ten Player of the Week honors and was the recipient of a school community outreach award. She received a B.A. in Spanish in 2004 and is working on a master s in Spanish at WMU. The Portage, Mich., native also lettered four years at Central High School, helping the Mustangs to a Division II state title in She was a member of the Michigan Olympic Development Program and played club soccer for the Michigan ZOLTON COHEN Hawks. Carlson instructs goalkeepers at the locallybased Kalamazoo Kingdom Training Academy and has p reviously served as an assistant coach at Holt High School (2004). She was also the head coach for the Haslett High School junior varsity squad in He is a member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and holds a National "C" License.
