2 FOLLOW US ON SOCIAL MEDIA Terriers, FROM COACH O CONNELL Hopefully you are enjoying the summer as our season @TerrierHockey /TerrierHockey It s been a whirlwind on campus the last month and I would like to thank everyone for their support, whether it was at the press conference, at our reception earlier this month or the numerous texts, s and calls I ve received. I could not be more excited to be the next head coach of BU Hockey. As a former student-athlete, assistant and now head coach, I want to let you know how much you mean to this program. Friends of BU Hockey and the program s season ticket holders are the lifeblood of this team and we wouldn t be able to provide the world-class experience, academically and competitively, without you. One of my first tasks was to fill my previous spot on our staff. I could not be happier to bring Paul Pearl on board to be our new associate head coach! He s as well-liked and respected as anyone in college hockey and he will be a perfect fit here at BU. You can learn more about him later in this newsletter. BUAthletics Reminder to All Those Who Support Terrier Athletics One of the cornerstones of our athletics program is the loyalty and enthusiasm of Terrier fans who support our teams by attending events and making gifts, among other means. This link is intended to provide basic information regarding NCAA rules that apply to Boston University representatives of athletics interest and highlights rules concerning situations encountered by alumni and friends of Boston University, specifically related to student-athletes and recruits. It does not include all applicable situations. Thank you for your continued support. I m also thrilled to announce that all of last year s staff will be returning! Len Quesnelle, Brian Eklund and Britt Miller are great people who are dedicated to helping our program succeed in all aspects. I really couldn t ask for a better staff as I enter my first season as a head coach! Our returning players took classes during the first summer session and our incoming class is getting a head start by taking classes in the current second summer session. Summer workouts have been productive and it s obvious that everyone here is looking forward to seeing what we look like out on the ice. One of the things that makes BU Hockey great is the support we receive in rinks all across the country. We hope that you can join us for our first-ever overseas trip this Thanksgiving when we head to Northern Ireland for the Friendship Four. Make sure to check out GoTerriers.com/FriendshipFour for links to tickets and travel packages. It s going to be an incredible experience for our guys! Go BU! - Albie MEN S ICE HOCKEY SUMMER NEWSLETTER 2
3 TWO TERRIERS ON NHL ALL-ROOKIE TEAM Two recent BU standouts were named the 2018 NHL All-Rookie Team as Clayton Keller (Arizona Coyotes) and Charlie McAvoy (Boston Bruins) joined Jack Eichel, Chris Drury and Tony Amonte as Terriers who have received the honor. McAvoy ranked third among all rookies with a +20 rating while pacing first-year defensemen in total time on ice in just 63 appearances. He accumulated the sixthmost points by a rookie defenseman in Bruins history. Keller was second among rookies in points (65) and assists (42) while leading all first-year players in shots (212). He registered a 10-game point streak, the longest by any rookie in He ended up being one of three finalists for the Calder Trophy, given to the league s top rookie. CHIASSON WINS CUP WITH CAPS Alex Chiasson joined the Washington Capitals last September and now he is a Stanley Cup champion. He added his name to the list of Terriers who have hoisted the greatest trophy in sports after the Capitals captured their first Stanley Cup title in June, topping the Vegas Golden Knights in five games. It marked the third straight year that a Terrier was on the Cup-winning team as head coach Mike Sullivan and Nick Bonino won back-to-back titles with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2016 and Chiasson became the ninth Terrier to hoist the Cup as a player or coach and it will be the 13th time a member of the BU hockey family will have his name on the Cup. In addition to Bonino and Sullivan, Jay Pandolfo and Scott Young also won the Cup on two occasions. Chiasson played in 14 games during the playoffs and recorded Washington s lone regulation goal in a 2-1 overtime win against Pittsburgh to clinch their second-round series in six games. He also picked up an assist against Tampa Bay in the Eastern Conference Final. During the regular season, Chiasson tallied 18 points (9g, 9a) in 61 contests. Chiasson played three years at BU from and led the team in scoring in each of his final two seasons. He finished with 99 points (36g, 63a) in 100 games before signing an entry-level contract with the Dallas Stars. In six NHL seasons, the St. Augustin, Quebec, native has appeared in 381 games and cumulated 59 goals and 65 assists for 124 points. He will spend his day with the Cup in Quebec City on September 2. FENTON NAMED WILD GM Congrats to Paul Fenton 82 on being named general manager of the Minnesota Wild! The last Terrier to be an NHL general manager was Jack Ferreira 66, who Fenton hired to be his assistant in Minnesota. Fenton was previously the assistant general manager with Nashville and another Terrier filled that spot. Congrats to Jeff Kealty 98 on his promotion with the Predators! Terriers on the Stanley Cup Scott Young (Pittsburgh Penguins) Shawn McEachern (Pittsburgh Penguins) Ed Ronan (Montreal Canadiens) Scott Young (Colorado Avalanche) Jay Pandolfo (New Jersey Devils) Chris Drury (Colorado Avalanche) Jay Pandolfo (New Jersey Devils) Joe DiPenta (Anaheim Ducks) Nick Bonino, Mike Sullivan (Pittsburgh Penguins) Nick Bonino, Mike Sullivan (Pittsburgh Penguins) Alex Chiasson (Washington Capitals) GRIER JOINS HYNES IN NEW JERSEY Another Terrier has joined the NHL coaching ranks as Mike Grier 97 is the new assistant coach for the New Jersey Devils, joining his old BU teammate John Hynes 98, who led the Devils to the NHL playoffs for the first time since 2012! Most recently, Grier served as a scout for the Chicago Blackhawks for the past four seasons. He also was an assistant coach at St. Sebastian s, where he played before coming to BU in MEN S ICE HOCKEY SUMMER NEWSLETTER 3

6 We are thrilled to introduce Paul Pearl as our new associate head coach! WELCOME TO BU, COACH PEARL! A 28-year Division I coaching veteran, Pearl most recently was the associate head coach at Harvard for four seasons. He joined the Crimson after a 19-year stint as the head coach at his alma mater, Holy Cross. He is regarded as one of the best coaches and recruiters in all of college hockey and we are fortunate to have him on staff. I am excited and humbled to become part of the Boston University men s ice hockey program, said Pearl. Having the opportunity to work with Albie, Len and the rest of the staff here is truly exciting. BU s tradition of excellence is something I have always admired. During Pearl s four years at Harvard, the Crimson made three straight NCAA tournaments (2015, 2016, 2017) and reached the ECAC championship game all three of those seasons, winning twice (2015 & 2017). The campaign was one of the best in Harvard s storied history as the Crimson claimed their first Beanpot title since 1993 in addition to their ECAC crowns and advanced to the NCAA Frozen Four for the first time in 23 years. Pearl is the all-time winningest coach in Holy Cross history, accumulating 297 victories during his 19 years as head coach, and was behind the bench for nine of the 11 most successful seasons in program history. He led the Crusaders to both of their NCAA tournament appearances in 2004 and 2006 with the latter resulting in one of the biggest upsets in college hockey history, a 4-3 victory over Minnesota in the first round. Including Quesnelle s four-year stint as head coach at Princeton, we now have 23 years of Division I head-coaching experience on staff. A native of Wakefield, Pearl began his coaching career with a two-year stint at UConn followed by two years at Holy Cross as an assistant from He spent the campaign as an assistant at Brown before returning to Holy Cross to take over the program. As a player, Pearl skated in 125 games for the Crusaders, compiling 77 points on 14 career goals and 63 assists. Pearl graduated from Holy Cross in 1989 and earned his MBA from UConn in MEN S ICE HOCKEY SUMMER NEWSLETTER 6
7 THREE TERRIERS SELECTED In 2018 NHL DRAFT Highlighted by two top-15 picks, Boston University had three forwards selected in the 2018 NHL Draft on June at American Airlines Center in Dallas. Rising sophomore Brady Tkachuk was the first American taken, going fourth overall to the Ottawa Senators, and incoming freshman Joel Farabee was taken 10 picks later by the Philadelphia Flyers. They were the first two left wings selected in the draft. Another incoming forward was selected on Saturday as Jake Wise - a Reading, Massachusetts, native - had his name called by the Chicago Blackhawks in the third round (69th overall). Farabee and Wise were two of the top five scorers last season for the U.S. National Under-18 Team. Tkachuk and Farabee became the 18th and 19th BU players to be taken in the first round of an NHL Draft. There have been nine Terriers taken in the opening round over the past four years, the most of any NCAA school. Seven current or future NCAA players were selected in the first round and BU was the lone school to have more than one in the group. The only Terriers to be ever be selected higher than Tkachuk were Rick DiPietro (first overall in 2000) and Jack Eichel (second overall in 2015). Scott Lachance was also picked fourth overall in Tkachuk and his father, former BU and NHL standout Keith, became the first-ever father-son duo to play in the NCAA and become NHL first-round picks. BU has now had 172 players selected in NHL drafts since MEN S ICE HOCKEY SUMMER NEWSLETTER 7
