1 USA HOCKEY, INC USA HOCKEY S WINTER MEETING COACHES SECTION FOR SEASON: WINTER REPORT INTRODUCTION USA Hockey s Coaching Education Program continues to play a key role in the development of our country s youth hockey players and coaches. The beginning of the hockey season lends itself to mainly serving the needs of the coaches as they register for clinics and work to complete the certification requirements. The National Office staff have been working closely with the IT Department in finding new and improved solutions for all of the Coaching Education Program online products: including the online age-specific modules, Level 3 Recertification and Clinic Registration System. We are undergoing a complete makeover of the modules and Level 3 recertification program by moving to a new platform. Since the Clinic Registration System is still very new there are no major changes but rather looking for other partners who can assist in the update and maintenance of the current system. The remainder of this report will reflect a general overview of what the Coaching Education Program has accomplished so far for the season and what is being planned for the remainder of this season LEVEL 5 The National Hockey Coaches Symposium was attended by 425 youth coaches. Presenters included Jeff Blashill, Head coach - Detroit Red Wings (NHL), Jon Cooper, Head Coach Tampa Bay Lightning (NHL) and Mike Sullivan, Head Coach Pittsburgh Penguins (NHL). Also, four members of the 1980 Olympic team were involved on a panel discussion. They were Mike Eruzione, John Harrington, Mark Johnson and Ken Morrow. Another highlight during the event was a Q & A discussion with Mike Richter and John Vanbiesbrouck. USA Hockey s greatest goaltending tandem. USA Hockey s ADM Regional Managers conducted the breakout sessions utilizing the 1980 & 1932 rinks as well as the outdoor speed skating oval. GOALTENDING CLINICS This clinic season USA Hockey, under the leadership of Phil Osaer and the help of the Goaltending Development Coordinators, led 23 Bronze Clinics, 3 Silver Clinics and 1 Gold Clinic. These clinics used learner centered thinking, new teaching theories and engaging activities on the ice and in the classroom to help both goalie coaches and non-goalie coaches learn the development ladder for USA Hockey goaltending. As the number of these clinics continue to grow through the years the development and number of youth goaltenders in the United States will see an increase. GIRLS /WOMEN S CLINICS The Girls /Women s Department continued to host an Intern Coach program at the Girls 15 and Girls 16/17 Player Development Camps. The New England district will host a coaching clinic in conjunction with the 2019 Women s Frozen Four at Quinnipiac University March
2 Page 2 of 5 NHL/CEP CLINICS Several districts held clinics throughout the fall in conjunction with NHL teams. Mid-Am, Bill Switaj: Sept , Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena. The clinic granted Level 4 certification to coaches who attended all weekend. Saturday featured a Level 1 option, and a Level 2 or 3 option on Sunday. All coaches registered for the clinics received a ticket to the game that Sunday night. Mid-Am, Bill Switaj: Sept 15-16, Pittsburgh Penguins at PPG Paints Arena. This clinic featured Level 1, 2, 3 clinics each day for a total of six clinics with 295 coaches throughout the weekend. Penguins coaches spoke each day and attendees were able to watch part of the first days of training camp as part of the clinic. Massachusetts, Paul Moore, and New England, Larry Rocha: Nov 13, Boston Bruins at the Warrior Ice Arena, the Bruins practice facility. This clinic featured Level 2 and 3 clinics with the groups starting as one large group and then breaking up into the level-specific clinic later in the day. Minnesota, Christian Koelling, Sept , Minnesota Wild at St. Paul RiverCentre. The clinic was held as part of the State of Hockey Coaches Summit featuring Minnesota Wild coaches as well as area college coaches and USA Hockey ADM staff. The clinic was a Level 4 clinic as well as a clinic for boys and girls high school hockey coaches. DISABLED CLINICS Chuck Gridley created the curriculum for Sled Hockey-specific High Performance Clinics. These clinics included 6-7 hours of classroom discussion followed by two days of handson experience, where the coaches participated with the staff of the camp to plan and run the on-ice portion of the camp. He ran this clinic in conjunction with three sled hockey camps in Skaneateles, NY; Grand Rapids, MI; and Columbus, Ohio. Chuck also serves as the disabled liaison and works with the Associate Coaches-in-Chief, Disabled Hockey, to run local clinics in their respective areas.

Through , we are able to not only share the latest news in the coaching world, we are able to direct coaches to our USA Hockey website and provide them clear paths to new stories, drills, ideas, coaching clinics and the mobile app. We recently have looked at making sure our newsletter has diversity by adding women s coaching stories/news along with disabled coaching stories/news. We want the newsletter to hit every aspect of coaching and be relevant to all that coach our great game. MOBILE COACHING APP Since Annual Congress, the USA Hockey Mobile Coach has launched a revolutionary desktop companion to maintain its place atop the hockey coaching app world. Coaches have built more than 2,000 practice plans this season and used the Practice Plan Analyzer more than 11,000 times to ensure their practices meet ADM guidelines. Over the summer and fall coaches have downloaded the app more than 14,000 times, bringing lifetime downloads to more than 190,000. Thanks to Kevin Couture and sponsorship partner Marriott, more than 800 first-in-class videos are now free to our coaches. We encourage anyone to join the more than 800 coaches daily from our country as well as hundreds across the globe who use this app to improve themselves and grow the game of hockey. RESOURCE CENTER Since our Annual Congress meeting in June of 2018, the focus in the Resource Center has been to continue processing/cataloging the remaining materials that were donated by Bob O Connor, as well as the ongoing staff donations (mostly VHS tapes and books). During this period - one box of duplicate materials was sent to both Braemar Ice Arena library in Edina, MN and Providence College ice arena library in Providence, RI.
5 Page 5 of 5 The cataloging/processing of the 2016 Coaching Education Program Level 5 theses is ongoing and should be completed in the next few months. This process includes entering each thesis into the ResourceMate database and also scanning each thesis into a folder on the server, which is accessible to all staff members. Once all of the 2016 theses have been scanned/catalogued, the goal is to have these theses accessible for viewing via a link on the Resource Center site. Recently, several boxes of books that were not hockey or coaching related were removed from the Resource Center shelves to free up space for additional books that are specifically related to coaching or hockey and are more up-to-date. The books that were removed included outdated books on Kinesiology, Sports Medicine, Sports Nutrition, Physiology, Psychology, etc. CONCLUSION We would like to thank the District Coaches-in-Chief, the Associate Coaches-in-Chief, and the more than 200 Instructors who have devoted so much of their time and energy to the Coaching Education Program. These volunteers have directly influenced thousands of youth coaches and indirectly impacted hundreds of thousands of youth players as they develop their skills and enjoy playing our great game. Our mission in the USA Hockey s Coaching Education Program is to meet the on-going needs of coaches at all levels. We continue to move the program forward as we seek to educate coaches and not just certify them for coaching our children.
