Enjoy! FHL All Star Game By Luc ( Lucky ) Savard Republic conference came into this one full of confidence having won all the previous editions. The National conference believed in turning their luck around. It didn t take long to get interesting as the Republic would lose the NHL top player Connor McDavid in the first minute of the game. No worries, he would come back later-on. The Nationals wouldn t be as lucky, they lost their top two defensemen, Drew Doughty and then Victor Hedman not long after. They would not come back. The Republic would score early as Richard Rakell would find the back of the net deflecting a shot from Roman Josi 33 seconds into the game. The National would get even 3 minutes later-on a Leon Draisaitl goal, assisted from Sidney Crosby and Brent Burns. 1

FHL All Star Game Continued Around the 10 minutes mark into the first, the National first line of Crosby, Draisaitl and Mark Scheifele would start to cycle deep into the Republic zone. This line found chemistry pretty fast. The cycling led to Crosby goal. National would breath easier. A few penalties were called in this game, Roman Josi would take a costly one 7 minutes in the second period. Crosby would make him pay as he beat Devan Dubnik with a top corner shot. Passes from Vladimir Tarasenko and Brent Burns. The Republic would get back not long after. Brad Marchand would run over Braden Holtby to score a questionable goal on a great Phil kessel set up. McDavid would help as well. Five minutes later, the Republic would tie the game Brad Marchand passes to Dustin Byfuglien, he shoots, Mcdavid deflection, it s a goal With less than two minutes left in the period. Mc David win the faceoff, Scheifele takes it away from him, passes to Crosby, he moves to the board, passes across to Draisaitl, score!!. National take the lead 4-3 to end the second period. The National found the first two period very challenging as their four Defensemen left would be overworked and the Republic outshot them 30 to 17. The third period would see both teams closing the play as Ryan Miller and Carey Price would stop everything toward a National conference win. FHL All Stars Stars of the Game: Star 1: Sidney Crosby 2 G, 4 Pts Star 2: Leon Draisaitl 2 G Star 3: Brad Marchand 1 G, 2 Pts Crosby who won a nice retro GM Camaro decided to give it away to his longtime friend Alex Ovechkin. 2

The FHL 7 th Annual Winter Classic Report The FHL Winter Classic returned this year and was played at Nationals Park in Washington D.C. It was a sold-out crowd of 41,313 who came to see the Montreal Canadians take on the New York Dolphins. Gamespeak predicted a 4-2 Dolphins victory but the game turned out to be a bit more exciting and offensive then a 4-2 game! The Dolphins got off to an early start on a goal from Mark Giordano with assists from Erik Karlsson and Frans Nielsen. Giordano scored as soon as he made entry into the zone. At 3:54 Andrej Sekera was whistled for roughing giving Montreal an early PP chance. Keith Yandle gave up the puck in offensive zone during the powerplay which was picked up by Nugent-Hopkins for a breakaway opportunity. James Reimer stopped Nugent-Hopkins giving his team a sigh of relief on the powerplay. The Dolphins then killed off a penalty against Erik Karlsson for cross checking. After the penalty, Jason Garrison had a great scoring opportunity Reimer but he rang it off the crossbar! David Backes was whistled for roughing which was killed off by Montreal. Just :16 later at 12:49 James Reimer shot the puck out of play which earned him a delay of game penalty. The penalty was killed off by Montreal. The rest of the period remained uneventful with New York leading 1-0. The second period started off evenly until Canadiens Gabriel Landeskog was whistled for hooking at 4:12. Brad Marchand capitalized at the 2:00 mark of the powerplay and beat James Reimer glove side low. The goal was assisted by Erik Karlsson. The goal put New York up 2-0 at 6:12 of the 2 nd period. The Canadiens struck back at 9:23 on a quick snap shot goal from Jeff Carter assisted by Tyler Bozak. The momentum would not last long for Montreal as Tyler Bozak went to the penalty box for slashing. Just :18 seconds into the penalty, Henrik Sedin scored on a deflection from Mark Giordano assisted by Phil Kessel. This made the score 3-1 in favor of New York. Montreal answered the Sedin goal quickly on a goal from Vincent Trocheck assisted by David Backes and T.J. Brodie. It was a nice slap shot goal to put Montreal back within one goal at 11:39 of the 2 nd period! The 2 nd period would end with a 3-2 New York lead. New York had a minimal lead in shots on goal of through two periods. 4

In the 3 rd period, the Dolphins had the first major scoring opportunity on a 3 on 1 rush with Jason Garrison, Marian Gaborik, and Ryan Hartman. The players passed it around and gave Gaborik a chance to unload a shot against Reimer which he stopped! On the next faceoff, Ryan Hartman was whistled for roughing and the Canadiens capitalized :36 into the penalty on a goal from Reilly Smith assisted by Rasmus Ristolainen which tied the game 3-3! On the next play at open ice, Brad Marchand (NY) and Bryan Little (MO) got into a skirmish and earned matching minor penalties at 3:59. The minor penalties were killed off and a goal was immediately scored after by Andrej Sekera of New York assisted by Phil Kessel and Brad Marchand giving the Dolphins a 4-3 lead at 6:16 of the 3 rd period. The next center ice faceoff was won by New York and dumped into the zone where Filip Forsberg of Montreal was whistled for hooking. This drew a lot of anger from the Montreal players and manager Bill Kay to no avail. The penalty would result in a powerplay goal by Colin Miller assisted by Brad Marchand and Henrik Sedin. Just like that the Dolphins were back on top 5-3 at 7:56 of the 3 rd period. The two goal lead lasted for :32 when Filip Forsberg scored on a high shot putting his team within one goal at 5-4. Montreal had two more powerplay opportunities in the last 10 minutes of the game and could not capitalize. The Dolphins won FHL Winter Classic in a 5-4 nail biter! Montreal lead the game in shots on goal Brad Marchand, Henrik Sedin, and Mark Giordano were the three stars of the game, all from the New York Dolphins. The New York powerplay was the difference in the game as they went 3-5 with the extra skater opportunities. Brad Marchand of the New York Dolphins celebrates win in the 7 th Annual FHL Classic at Washington Nationals Park. He had 1 goal and 2 assists in winning the First Star of the game. He leads the Dolphins with 33 goals, and 24 assists for 57 points and a +/- of

Coaches Corner: More Control of Your Players by Robert Chisholm A while back Action Hockey added a new feature on each players screen called Usage. From this screen you have access to some features found in other screens such as Roster Availability and Additional Inactive Periods. New features added were Usage Preferences, Offense, Defense and Goalie. This new Usage feature can add a new dimension to your team s game playing. 11

You can now set for each individual player how you want to use them in a game. For Skaters you have the ability to set: Offense 1. Never Use on a Power Play 2. Never Use As Extra Attacker 3. Exceed Target When Behind Late in A Game 4. Double Shift When Behind Late Defense 1. Never Use on Penalty Kill 2. Never Use Late in Game With Lead 3. Exceed Target Minutes When Ahead Late 4. Never Use on Faceoffs Usage Preferences 1. Target TOI (Time on Ice) 2. Pull When Fatigue Below 3. Preferred Side (Think of Defensemen) Control Pass vs Shoot 1. Inside Positioning 2. Mid Positioning 3. Outside Positioning Frequency of Type of Play More or Less 1. Penetrate 2. Deflect 3. Rush For Goalies 1. Target Starts 2. Pull Goalie 3. Never Pull in Games Started (Guarantees the goalie never gets pulled) 12

Accessing The Player Usage Tab 1. Open Up your Team Roster. 2. Next I Suggest Click on the Status Tab so you can access all your players easily without having to jump in and out. 3. After clicking on the Status Tab pick any player on your roster and double click their Name. 13

In this example I double clicked on Mike Hoffman. Click The Usage Tab above (third tab to the right). 14

Click The Usage Tab and the following screen appears At this point you can change any setting for that individual player. Furthermore it is easy to access all other players from their name in the list on the lower right of the screen. Just single click the player s name in the list. It should be noted the Usage Preferences are defaults based on player s ratings or from the Game settings itself. 15

Coaching Corner Continued From a coaching point of view you have more control in many situations. Late in the game you might shorten your bench. Think of the opportunities for when you are trailing late in a game. You want your top offensive players getting more ice time. You can set for those players to 1. Exceed Target Minutes When Behind Late 2. Double Shift When Behind Late Or how about those Offensive Players that are not the best defensively. 1. Never Use Late In Game With Lead 2. Never Use On Penalty Kill Conversely Late in the game when leading you could set it so certain defensive players 1. Exceed Target Minutes When Ahead Late Throughout the game make it so Defensive Players are not used in offensive situations as often. 1. Never use on Power Play 2. Never use as Extra Attacker For Goalies 1. Never pull in Games Started When you are at the wall in number of games a goalie has played you might not want the Computer Coach to pull your goalie and put in a backup. For all skaters you can modify and change their style by changing Target TOI, when to pull them off the ice when their fatigue drops below a value, if they pass, shoot, penetrate, deflect or rush more or less often. 16

Coaching Corner Continued After making your changes be sure to click OK button on the bottom right. You can make changes to other players before clicking OK by single clicking on the player s name in list on the lower right part of the screen and then making changes for that player. Remember to click OK after all changes or they will be lost. Any setting changes you make will be saved when you save the.coa 17

These settings work for your Road games. If it is your home game make sure you turn on Auto Lines when you start to play a game. Final note: There will be occasions that the settings you made in the Usage Tab will be ignored and this is usually when the other players are too fatigued to be on the ice, or your team has sufferred one or more in-game injuries. Editors Note: We prefer to leave Auto-Lines off when playing our home games since we like to do our own line changes. APC! Hockey allows for slightly longer line times than in actual NHL. But we still try and keep our shift to seconds if possible (except on the power play we go 1 minute). Or course you forfeit the individual player ice time changes (i.e. double shift a player when behind in a game). But we have found we can do that by ourselves since we are the home coach. Gamespeak would like to thank Robert Chisholm for his valuable coaching insights. He certainly doesn t have to share this knowledge, but he is in the FHL for the betterment of the sport and the art. 18

From the Assistant Commissioner s Office: The 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeonchang just wrapped up and there were a lot of exciting events and incredible athletes to watch! However, with any major sporting event there always seems to be controversy. This year we saw the doping scandal with the Russians forcing them to participate as individuals and of course the decision by the NHL not to allow an Olympic break for their players to attend and support or participate for their countries. Why was this even an issue? It has been done in the past and the NBA allows their players to participate in the summer Olympics. Even the KHL allows their players to participate! The simple answer is league politics and money! The harder answer requires some pretty deep reading and a working knowledge of professional sports ownership. So does that mean I agree with their hiatus from the Olympics? Absolutely not! Allowing these players to participate is an honor for them and it allows them the opportunity to showcase their skills on the world stage and shines a light on the NHL. Plus, it makes for some very exciting and intense hockey for two weeks. Instead, the NHL decided to play on and see lower ratings for the two week Olympic period. However, there are some positives that came from the Winter Olympic hockey this year. Please note FHL important deadlines coming up: Feb 16 Block 5 started March 11 Block 5 ends 7 PM EST March 18 Trade Deadline- 7 PM EST March 21 COAs due 10 PM EST March 23 Block 6 starts (regular season final block) First, congratulations to the Russian athletes as they won gold for the men and to the USA women as they won gold! Both games were very exciting! We all can agree that Germany made a serious fundamental mistake on the powerplay in the 3 rd period against Russia. That will be talked about for a long time at many German pubs! Even though we didn t see any current NHL stars, we were able to see players like Pavel Datsyuk and Martin Erat who used to play in the NHL. There were many former NHL players on various teams who have moved on from the NHL into other leagues such as the KHL. We saw Erat and Datsyuk both play against the US team and it reminded us of their time in the NHL. It was amazing to see how well the Russians played through the tournament. We even saw some fire from veteran KHL LW Ilya Kovalchuk against the US team! What are the positives you were talking about? We got a glimpse at some upcoming talent from the US and Canada teams. I was impressed by the physical play of Jordan Greenway on the US team. He is 6 6 and 227lbs. He wasn t afraid to take on anyone in his path. We also got to see Chris Borque, Brian Gionta, and Ryan Donato. These three players definitely have a future in the NHL. Also, some were impressed with US goaltender Ryan Zapolski. He was shaky at times but we got to see someone play on a level we wouldn t normally see if the NHL had dominated the roster. 19
