10 Ryan Getzlaf s leadership as captain of the Ducks was never more evident than in the (literal) face of adversity in the opening round B Y A D A M B R A D Y Not the cry, but the flight of a wild duck, leads the flock to fly and follow. Chinese Proverb TR U E L E A D E R S H I P, as the thinking goes, is demonstrated more by what our leaders do than what they say. And if there was ever a time Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf demonstrated that, it was during a harrowing three days smack in the middle of the first round of these playoffs. With the Ducks clinging to a one-goal lead late in Game 1 at Honda Center, Getzlaf took a Tyler Seguin slap shot to the face in what ended up a being a 4-3 victory for Anaheim. He was left with a deep cut near the left side of his mouth, a broken bridge, a few missing teeth and an amount of stitches that Ducks officials would only describe as multiple. Yet there were no broken bones, leaving no doubt in Getzlaf s mind that he would be good to go for Game 2. Once we established that my jaw wasn t broken, that was the main focus, Getzlaf told reporters prior to that game. If it was set in place and everything was okay then I was going to be able to go. And then it was just a matter of getting some sleep. The sleep part wasn t exactly an option right away, as Getzlaf s wife Paige went into labor at around 10:30 p.m. the night before Game 2 and delivered a little after midnight. A baby girl named Willa joined sons Ryder and Gavin in the Getzlaf clan. I was icing my face, Getzlaf casually said, as she was trying to push a baby out. That night, Getzlaf played Game 2 with a clear protective face mask to protect his swollen, stitched-up face and oh, by the way had Anaheim s first goal and an assist in a pivotal 3-2 Ducks victory. He brought the Ducks back from an early deficit by stealing the puck from Dallas Erik Cole, 8 DUCKS DIGEST

12 forcing his way to the net and roofing a shot from in deep. But it was his hard hit on Dallas defenseman Alex Goligoski just a half-minute into the game that really resonated with coach Bruce Boudreau. Just looking at him, the greatness and I hate to use this since he s still playing and he s got a lot of years left in him to me was defined that he looked like [crap], he was obviously tired, he doesn t like wearing a shield, and the first shift, he goes in and runs somebody to show everybody, I m fine. I am good. Don t think you re going to take advantage of me tonight, Boudreau said. I thought that was such a telltale sign of a superstar. Afterward, Getzlaf called his travails, an absolutely incredible couple of days. They were a little hectic, but these are the things you want to do in life. The following week, Getzlaf missed a Game 4 defeat in Dallas with an unspecified injury and came back with a goal and two assists to lead the Ducks to a crucial victory in Game 5 at Honda Center. He s an unbelievable player, and he s a great captain, says Cogliano, celebrating after a key goal in Game 2. He s pretty easy to follow. 10 DUCKS DIGEST The final test of a leader is that he leaves behind him in other men, the conviction and the will to carry on. Walter Lippman I T S T H E T Y P E O F G U I D A N C E as Ducks captain that Getzlaf has exhibited throughout his ninth NHL season, in which he scored a career-high 31 goals and finished second to Pittsburgh s Sidney Crosby in scoring with 87 points. Beyond those numbers, he commanded the Ducks to a second straight Pacific Division title, the best record in the Western Conference and past the Stars into the second round of this postseason. Every once in a while, you need your best players to step it up when the rest of the guys lose their composure, Boudreau said after that Game 2. Getzy, with what happened to him in the last three days, to come in and get two points and a plus-3 rating, is a sure reason why he s hopefully nominated for the MVP. There is little doubt Getzlaf will be a finalist for the Hart Trophy given to the league s most valuable player, and he s certainly got an endorsement from his longtime linemate and the last Duck to win that award, Corey Perry. He s a leader on this team, Perry said. for a reason.

13 Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others. Jack Welch GETZLAF H A S B E E N T H E F I R S T T O A D M I T he didn t flourish in the captaincy right away. He was handed the reins when Scott Niedermayer retired in the summer of 2010, and the following season Getzlaf and Paige became parents for the first time. In , Getzlaf endured his roughest season as a pro, scoring just 57 points in 82 games as the Ducks missed the playoffs for just the second time in his career. There was a lot I had to learn about keeping things at home, he has said. He was still relatively young in the scheme of things when he was named captain, Niedermayer told a reporter earlier this year. To be put in a bigger role like that obviously can mix you up pretty good. If he s out there and not playing as well as he would like personally, but then he s worried about the team not playing well, it can be a bit more to handle than you would like. He s done a good job of just kind of sticking with it and letting it all kind of figure itself out. If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader. John Quincy Adams T H E S E D AY S, there is no doubt Getzlaf is the fearless leader of the Ducks, the guy they will lean on to hopefully guide them to a second Stanley Cup. If it happens, Getzlaf will be rewarded by being the first Duck to put his hands on it, and he ll have the scars to show the staggering diligence it takes to get there. The last 24 hours, what has happened to him, that shows a lot of character, said Teemu Selanne, a guy who knows a little about character. He s Mr. Incredible. 19 RED MENACE Ducks goalie Frederik Andersen has seemed unfazed by being thrust into the spotlight of the Stanley Cup Playoffs B Y A D A M B R A D Y He started the season in the minor leagues, and six months later he was Anaheim s starting goalie to open the Stanley Cup Playoffs. But if you re expecting that to make Frederik Andersen nervous, you ve got the wrong guy. The 24-year old from Herning, Denmark sports an unkempt tuft of bright red hair on the top of his 6-4 frame, but that s just about the only thing fiery about Andersen. His unruffled demeanor is the ideal temperament for a goaltender and one he flexes on a constant basis. Ask him if he s at all nervous playing in his first NHL postseason for the first time, and he s almost surprised by the question. Not too much, he calmly says while wearing an Animal House t-shirt that depicts chimps, bears and penguins partying outside the Delta House. It s just about being ready to play the game, and prepare like you always do. I never get nervous if I do that. That s pretty much my approach for every game. You ve got to have an even keel at all times. Whatever happens, things will be down to the wire pretty much every game, so you can t allow yourself to get too high or too low. You ve got to find that balance. Andersen was the picture of tranquility all season long, one that started with Anaheim s AHL affiliate in Norfolk. But lingering injuries to Viktor Fasth who played more than half of the Ducks games last season required the services of Andersen, and he responded with an incredible rookie campaign. He went with a 2.29 goals-against average and.923 save percentage, earning the respect of Ducks teammates like Daniel Winnik. He s done it all year, Winnik said. It s no fluke that he s 20-5 on the season. Really calm. Really big. You see him in the room before [the game]. He s just really calm all the time. He even made a little NHL history when he got off to a sizzling start this season, becoming just the third goaltender in NHL history to earn nine or more wins in his first 10 games. DUCKS DIGEST 17

20 He s played in a lot of big pressure games for us this year and he s come through with flying colors in all of them, Boudreau said. He certainly is playing like he doesn t want to give it up. He has the team s faith. There s no doubt about that. Yet Andersen seems almost unfazed by his early success. I don t think about it too much, he says. I know when I first got sent down, it was a huge motivation for me to get a chance to get back up here and make the decision to send me down again really, really hard on them. It s the same right now. I want to make it tough on them to take me out of the net. He has made it nearly impossible, which was proven going into this postseason. When Jonas Hiller who was Anaheim s No. 1 netminder all season struggled down the final stretch of the regular season, Bruce Boudreau elected to go with Andersen to start the playoffs. He s played in a lot of big pressure games for us this year and he s come through with flying colors in all of them, Boudreau said. He certainly is playing like he doesn t want to give it up. He has the team s faith. There s no doubt about that. That faith has extended to the Ducks fanbase, who took to tagging Andersen with nicknames that play off his Danish heritage as well as his red hair. The Ducks even asked fans to vote for their favorite through the Ducks website, and The Great Dane won out over the likes of The Danish Wall, Anders Mountain and The Ginja Ninja. I don t pay attention too much to it, Andersen says. It s a little silly, but whatever makes the fans have a little fun on my behalf, it s fine with me. It s not like Andersen to be fazed by anything, though he admits that wasn t always the case. When I was younger, I used to have a little bit of a temper. But I ve grown out of it a little bit, he says. I was a sore loser. I would throw stuff, break sticks on the post and stuff like that. I learned to control it much better, and I feel like I can use that competitiveness to my advantage now and prepare myself even better to win. 18 DUCKS DIGEST

21 I m still a pretty bad loser, but I handle it better. It s just wanting to win at all times. Andersen s road to the Stanley Cup Playoff stage is an interesting one, even before you consider where he started this season. He was originally drafted in the seventh round (187th overall) in the 2010 NHL Draft by Carolina, but Andersen and his agent couldn t come to contract terms with the Hurricanes. In 2012 he re-entered the draft after a standout season with Frolunda of the Swedish Elite League, where he led the league in goalsagainst and save percentage and broke Henrik Lundqvist s team record for shutouts in a season with eight. The Ducks snagged him with the 87th pick (third round) that summer, and he had a strong first season in Norfolk in But with Hiller and Fasth securely in place in Anaheim, not to mention highly decorated prospect (and 2011 draftee) John Gibson looking like the Ducks goalie of the future, Andersen s plight seemed uncertain. Yet he s managed to make the most of his opportunities this season and in the playoffs, while appearing completely unflustered by it all. I know I can play at this level now, so it s nothing to be nervous about, he says. I just enjoy the moment and all the games and the fans. 22 B Y J E N E L Y N R U S S O, S P E C I A L T O D U C K S D I G E S T Editor s Note: As part of the Ducks 20th anniversary celebration, we are highlighting the unique stories of some of our Season Seat Holders who have been with us from the beginning. They are known to many Ducks fans as simply Mickey and Minnie, the unmistakable couple with the unique jerseys and a love for their team that could only be matched by their hearts of gold. You ll find Stan and Joyce Shapiro in Section 215 at Honda Center, where they ve been supporting and following the Ducks since the beginning. As Chicago natives, their love for hockey can be traced back to their childhood days, when Stan watched the likes of Bobby Hull and Stan Mikita play for the Chicago Blackhawks inside old Chicago Stadium. In 1976, the Shapiros relocated to Huntington Beach, and a new city meant finding a new team to support. They followed the Los Angeles Kings briefly, but when Stan heard an NHL team was coming to Anaheim, he was certain he had found his new hockey allegiance. I was one of the first to contact the team and put down a deposit for season tickets, Stan recalls. I wrote a $500 check and put Ducks in the memo line. At the time, Joyce had no idea what I was up to. You spent $500 on some ducks? she says. That s when I figured I d better bring her to the games with me. And they ve been cheering on the Ducks together ever since. The couple has their game day routine, which includes donning those jerseys with Mickey and Minnie and the number 93 on the backs, something the two have been wearing since the team s first season. The jersey style may have changed over the years, but the personalized names and numbers have remained the same, giving a nod to the club s inaugural year and original owners, the Walt Disney Company. And when it comes to these two, there is no mistaking who is in charge. Joyce wears the C, while Stan wears the A. I m the boss, Joyce says with a smile. In addition to the jerseys, 20 DUCKS DIGEST

24 you can spot Stan in his fuzzy orange hat, a dollar store pick-up during one Halloween season. I ve been told I can t stop wearing it, says Stan of his brightly colored headwear. People tell me all the time that it s easier to find their seats when they can see the hat. Just like clockwork, they arrive early at Honda Center before the doors open, stop by the same concession stand to pick up their pre-game meal, and head to their seats behind the west end goal. They are the same seats they ve sat in for the better part of two decades, the place they feel is like their second home. It s a place they don t plan on leaving any time soon. We ve met so many wonderful people who sit around us, says Joyce of their seat neighbors. They re like our second family. I ve been offered a ton of money for these seats, adds Stan. I d never consider it. Some things are just not for sale. Considered to be somewhat like Honda Center royalty, Stan and Joyce receive greetings from several familiar faces during games, from arena workers to the Power Players to Wild Wing. Even the Finnish Flash himself recognizes the dedicated couple. The Power Players will wave at us when they re on the ice, says Stan. We consider it good luck. And Teemu always acknowledges us at the start of the second period. He s our favorite. Just like hockey players, Stan and Joyce have a few superstitions they keep as their small way of helping the Ducks stay in the win column. Stan will drink the same soda each game, until they lose, says Joyce, then he changes to a different soda. And the same with me. I ve got accessories I ll wear to the games. But if they lose, I ll switch them to something different next game. Their Ducks dedication doesn t stop at the Honda Center doors, as the couple religiously watches their beloved team play every road game from their home. And they do so without interruptions. Everyone knows not to bother us when the game is on, says Joyce. No phone calls or visitors allowed unless it s an emergency. Unique jerseys, fuzzy hats and superstitions aside, Stan and Joyce love the sport of hockey. The speed and fast-paced action of the game have made them life-long fans. Over the 20 years, there haven t been many games the two have missed. Stan even postponed heart surgery once so he could be present for a Ducks playoff run. But last fall, Joyce was sidelined as she dealt with surgery needed for tongue cancer. She missed several games at the beginning of this season, but made it her primary goal to get back to cheering on the Ducks as soon as possible. It was so hard to miss all of those games, recalls Joyce. I was determined to make it back by November 6th. And I did, and I was greeted with a Welcome Back, Minnie! message on the Honda Center screens. That was so special. I ll never forget that day. As the couple approaches their 50th wedding anniversary this September, Joyce has only one gift in mind. While the traditional gift for celebrating 50 years is typically gold, she would rather receive something in silver. I want the Ducks to win the Cup again, says Joyce without hesitation. 25 The Golden Skate A look at the history of hockey in California For just the fifth time in the history of the Stanley Cup Playoffs though the second time this postseason two California teams will do battle for the right to move one step closer to capturing the Cup. No matter who prevails in this series, it will be the eighth time in the past 10 seasons that a California club has reached the Western Conference Final. In honor of this intrastate clash, here s a look at the history of hockey in The Golden State: 1928 The California Hockey League, a minor pro circuit, is founded with four teams: the Oakland Sheiks, San Francisco Tigers, Los Angeles Richfields and Hollywood Millionaires. The league lasts five years before disbanding The Pacific Coast Hockey League (which ultimately would become DUCKS DIGEST 23

26 the Western Hockey League) begins play, including teams in Hollywood, Los Angeles, Oakland, Pasadena, San Diego and San Francisco In its first expansion from the Original Six to 12 teams, the NHL places two franchises in California: the Los Angeles Kings and the Oakland Seals Mike Lampman, who was born in Hamilton, Ontario but moved to Lakewood, Calif., when he was 12, becomes the first player from Southern California to be drafted by an NHL team when the Blues select the winger 111th overall The California Golden Seals which the year before changed its name from the Oakland Seals create a stir around the NHL by briefly sporting white skates The World Hockey Association, in addition to taking a significant number of NHL stars, introduces its own California club, the Los Angeles Sharks. They last only two seasons The Golden Seals relocate from Oakland to Cleveland and are renamed the Barons, but the franchise merges with the Minnesota North Stars two years later Kings center Marcel Dionne wins the Art Ross Trophy with an NHL-best 137 points, becoming the first scoring champion to play for a team west of Chicago In what will forever be known as the Miracle on Manchester, the Kings face the heavily favored Oilers in Game 3 of the first round of the playoffs. Los Angeles erases a 5-0 deficit in the third period to win 6-5 in overtime. LA ultimately wins the series in five games. 24 DUCKS DIGEST 1988 In one of the biggest trades in sports history, a tearful Wayne Gretzky is traded in the offseason from the Edmonton Oilers, where he had won four Stanley Cups, to the Los Angeles Kings.

27 1990 According to USA Hockey, there are about 4,800 registered players in the state of California The San Jose Sharks make their debut as an NHL expansion team and go on to lose a league-record 71 games in their second season The Kings make their first appearance in the Stanley Cup Final, losing to the Montreal Canadiens in five games. Montreal remains the last Canadian team to win the Cup On the heels of its 1992 hit movie The Mighty Ducks, the Walt Disney Company brings a team to Anaheim and calls it the Mighty Ducks. The team would begin play in October of that year and would make its first playoff appearance in the fourth season as a franchise The number of registered players in California swells to about 15, The Mighty Ducks, thanks in great part to the play of eventual Conn Smythe Trophy winner J.S. Giguere, advance to Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final before eventually losing 3-0 to the New Jersey Devils The Mighty Ducks are purchased from Disney by new owners Henry and Susan Samueli. That summer, the team hires Brian Burke as general manager and Randy Carlyle as head coach and signs future Hallof-Famers Scott Niedermayer and Teemu Selanne In November, the Sharks trade Marco Sturm, Wayne Primeau and Brad Stuart to the Bruins for center Joe Thornton who scores a league-high 125 points and wins the Hart Trophy, the only MVP to be traded midseason The Ducks drop the Mighty from their name during the offseason and are rebranded as simply the Anaheim Ducks. Anaheim goes 16-5 in vanquishing the Minnesota Wild, Vancouver Canucks and Detroit Red Wings before downing the Senators The Anaheim Ducks High School Hockey League is launched with JSerra Catholic High School (San Juan Capistrano) as its charter member. Santa Margarita Catholic High (Santa Margarita) is added in 2009 and goes on to win the USA Hockey Varsity national title in The ADHSHL has grown to 36 teams in two varsity divisions and a JV division The NHL Draft is held at Staples Center (home of the Kings), the first time the event is held in California. The event has even more of a Golden State flavor when Beau Bennett of Gardena is chosen 20th by the Penguins and becomes the highest drafted Californiaborn-and-trained player in league history. Later in the first round, Emerson Etem of Long Beach is taken 29th by the Ducks The LA Kings become the second Golden State team to lift the Stanley Cup, going 10-1 on the road during their run. The Kings are the first eight seed to win a championship The number of registered hockey players in California grows 18 percent over the previous five years and surpasses 24,000, giving the state the seventh-highest hockey-playing population in the country The Ducks and Kings play in a historic outdoor game on January 25, 2014 at Dodger Stadium as part of the Coors Light NHL Stadium Series. 29 Ryan Getzlaf When we won the Cup, that whole process was really fun, and I enjoyed every minute of it. The big thing that sticks out is obviously the celebration at the end and seeing the look on everybody s faces after the work we put in and the expectations we d arrived at. 30 Kyle Palmieri The series against Detroit last year was a pretty incredible experience. I still have the picture with all the glow sticks at Honda Center as the background on my phone. It was surreal getting out there and seeing all that. Your first playoff series is something you ll always remember. I remember every day, every game so vividly. It s a pretty incredible feeling to be in the NHL playoffs and competing for the Stanley Cup. It was definitely my fondest playoff memory, but hopefully, I ll make more this year. 28 DUCKS DIGEST

31 Saku Koivu The most memorable playoff year for me was 2002 when I came back from cancer. I only had played two regular season games and had just enough time to get back in shape for the playoffs. We were the eighth seed and Boston was the first seed, and we ended up winning that series. I had the gamewinning goal in the third period of one of the games. That was very emotional after coming back from a tough year and tough treatments, so that s the first one that comes to my mind. DUCKS DIGEST 29

I scored a one-timer on a pass back from Andy McDonald, and that s obviously a goal I ll remember for the rest of my life. We were up 2-1, and that made it 3-1 going into the third. 33 Corey Perry Just lifting the Cup, and having my family there, was pretty special. It was kind of a thank you to them for being there and showing all the hard work and money they spent. 34 Teemu Selanne I still remember the first playoff game in Winnipeg when it was a white out and there were 16,000 people all wearing white. It was amazing, and I remember how loud it was and everything. But obviously the year we won the Cup, you can t really compare that to anything else. You can t even describe that. There was so much hard work and dedication and passion. There was also a little bit of luck, where everything has to go right for you to enjoy that. But when you finally do it, it s unbelievable. 32 DUCKS DIGEST

35 It s a bitter rivalry 20 years in the making, but it s the first time the Ducks and Kings have ever faced each other in the playoffs. The Ducks had the upper hand over LA this season, winning four of the five games, the only loss a nine-round shootout on December 3 at Honda Center. Here s a look at the season series: December 3 at Anaheim Kings 2, Ducks 1 (SO) The Ducks and Kings took a tie game into a shootout and after nine rounds and only one RIVALRY shootout goal by Dwight King, the Kings took the extra point. Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf had goals for Anaheim, and Jonas Hiller stopped a season-high 49 of 51 shots. RENEWED A closer look at Ducks-Kings and Los Angeles with a 2-1 victory over the Kings at Staples Center. Tim Jackman scored his fourth goal of the season and Patrick Maroon collected his sixth goal and second career game-winner, both against Los Angeles. April 12 at LA Ducks 4, Kings 3 (SO) The Ducks clinched the top record in the Western Conference for the first time in club history with a 4-3 shootout win over the Kings at Staples Center. Nick Bonino, Devante Smith-Pelly and Matt Beleskey were the Ducks goal scorers, while Smith-Pelly added the shootout winner. # January 23 at Anaheim Ducks 2, Kings 1 The Ducks downed LA 2-1 to improve to at Honda Center to equal the second-best home start in NHL history. 41 Los Angeles Kings As of May 1 The Latest: Game 2 of the battle between two bitter rivals is upon us, as the Ducks and Kings clash once more in front of what figures to be another raucous Honda Center crowd. This series marks the fifth time ever that two California teams have met in the playoffs, but just the second time it s happened after the first round. These two teams have played 117 regular-season games against each other all-time. Up Front: Kings sniper Jeff Carter is in his eighth postseason, and third with the Kings. Carter had points in five straight games in LA s first-round series with San Jose. His possesses one of the deadliest wrist shots in the game, especially in full flight, so the Ducks will have to find a way to contain his speed on the wing. Tyler Toffoli s knack for scoring gamewinning goals has carried over into the postseason. Toffoli had five of his 12 regular season goals serve as game winners, and his goals in Games 4 and 5 helped the Kings stave off elimination. Toffoli had five points (2g/3a) in 12 Stanley Cup Playoff games last season. On Defense: Young defenseman Jake Muzzin is thriving alongside superstar Drew Doughty. Muzzin, 25, has already surpassed his previous Jeff Carter playoff career high in points (three points, 17 games in 2012) in six games in this postseason. She SUSAN earned a B.S. in Mathematics from UC Berkeley in From 1972 to 1985 she was with IBM Corporation, where she worked initially as a software programmer in the Federal Systems Division, Westlake Village, CA, and then as a Systems Engineer in the National Marketing Division, Los Angeles, CA, providing technical marketing and sales support for IBM's mid-range computer systems. In 1985 she left IBM and focused her energy on raising her children, at which time she developed a keen interest in alternative health care. She developed an active consulting practice in the areas of nutrition, homeopathy and Chinese herbs, and subsequently received a Ph.D. degree in nutrition from the American Holistic College of Nutrition in 1993 and a diploma in Homeopathy from the British Institute of Homeopathy in HENRY SAMUELI was born in Buffalo, NY and grew up in Los Angeles, CA. He earned a B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from UCLA in 1975, 1976 and 1980, respectively. From , he worked in the defense industry and held various engineering and management positions in the Electronics and Technology Division of TRW Inc., Redondo Beach, CA. Since 1985 Dr. Samueli has been a professor in the Electrical Engineering Department at UCLA, and since 2003 he has also served as a Distinguished Adjunct Professor in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department at UC Irvine. In 1991 he co-founded Broadcom Corporation, a global leader in providing semiconductor solutions for wired and wireless communications and he took a leave of absence from UCLA in 1995 to be at Broadcom full-time. Dr. Samueli serves as Chairman and Chief Technology Officer of Broadcom and he helps drive the vision of the company s research and development activities. He has published over 100 technical papers and he is a named inventor in over 70 U.S. patents. He was elected a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in 2000, a member of the National Academy of Engineering in 2003, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in In December 2003 Susan and Henry purchased the management contract for the Honda Center sports and entertainment venue, creating Anaheim Arena Management, LLC, to oversee all operations of the arena, and in June 2005 they purchased the Anaheim Ducks National Hockey League club, Honda Center s largest tenant. In 2012 Venues Today Magazine ranked Honda Center 10th in the world in gross ticket sales over the past decade, and in 2007 the Anaheim Ducks became the first California team ever to win the Stanley Cup championship. The success of Broadcom Corporation has also provided Susan and Henry the opportunity to support many worthwhile nonprofit organizations. After Broadcom s initial public offering in 1998 they created the Samueli Foundation and to date they have gifted over $250 million in the areas of Education, Health, Social Services, the Performing Arts and Jewish Culture. In 2003 and 2004 Susan and Henry were listed among BusinessWeek s 50 Most Generous Philanthropists in the nation. In 2012 they joined the Giving Pledge, initiated by Warren Buffett and Bill and Melinda Gates, whose members pledge the majority of their wealth to philanthropy. Since relocating to Orange County, CA in 1995, Susan and Henry have become very active in the community. Susan is on the Board of the Orangewood Children s Foundation and was the founder of 44 Women for Children, an Orangewood auxiliary that supports teens emancipating from the foster care system. She serves on the Board of the Susan Samueli Center for Integrative Medicine at UC Irvine s College of Medicine, which she and Henry established in Susan and Henry also serve on the Board of the Samueli Institute, a non-profit scientific research organization they founded in 2001 focused on complementary and integrative medicine and the science of healing. In 2000 Susan was honored with the UC Irvine Medal. In 2002 she received the Ellen Cooperman Angel Award from the John Wayne Cancer Institute. In 2005 she received the General William Lyon Crystal Vision Philanthropy Award from the Orangewood Children s Foundation, and in 2012 she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Humanities from the Southern California University of Health Sciences. Henry serves on the UC President s Board on Science and Innovation and the Dean s Advisory Council of both the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science at UCLA and the Henry Samueli School of Engineering at UC Irvine. In 2000 he was awarded the University of California Presidential Medal, the UC Irvine Medal, the UCLA School of Engineering and Applied Science Alumnus of the Year, and the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society Industrial Pioneer Award. In 2005 he was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science degree from the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology and the Edward A. Dickson Alumnus of the Year from UCLA. In 2006 he received the IEEE Communications Society Distinguished Industry Leaders Award. In 2010 he received the UCLA Medal. 44 TEAM MANAGEMENT Michael Schulman Chairman of the Board, Anaheim Arena Management, LLC Chief Executive Officer, Anaheim Ducks Hockey Club, LLC Managing Director, H&S Ventures, LLC SCHULMAN serves as Chairman of the MICHAEL Board of Anaheim Arena Management (AAM), Chief Executive Officer of Anaheim Ducks Hockey Club (ADHC), Chairman of the Board of the Anaheim Ducks Foundation and serves on the board of NHL Enterprises. He is also an Alternate Governor for the NHL Board of Governors. In addition, he is Managing Director of H&S Ventures, the entity that manages the Samueli Family Office, AAM and ADHC. Schulman reports directly to owners Dr. Henry Samueli and Susan Samueli, and is responsible for managing and long-term planning of their profit and nonprofit entities. Schulman s role with Honda Center began long before he was appointed Chairman of AAM in December of Schulman was the lead negotiator on behalf of the Samueli family in the acquisition of the management agreement from the bankruptcy court and the City of Anaheim. He acts as liaison between the Samueli family and AAM management and supervises all financial, legal and charitable decisions of the arena. He also acts as liaison with the other partners of AAM and the City of Anaheim. In addition, Schulman oversees all long-term capital projects, including the 57 Freeway Marquee, two 360 LED rings, revamping of the video room and remodeling of the company offices and locker rooms. Schulman s role at AAM includes overseeing all business and hockey operations. He was the lead negotiator on behalf of the Samueli family in working with Disney on the purchase of the Anaheim Ducks and also with the NHL in qualifying the Samueli family for the purchase of the team. Schulman was also involved with the family in changing the team name and logo, and forming the Anaheim Ducks Foundation. He is responsible for developing additional ice and inline rinks in the Orange County area and was instrumental in the purchase of several ice and inline rinks, including Irvine, Corona and Huntington inline rinks, and Westminster, Yorba Linda and Lakewood ice rinks. Schulman is the Chairman of THE RINKS Program and oversees its development, including the advancement of the Anaheim Ducks High School Hockey League and the California State Championship. Schulman s role at H&S Ventures is multifaceted. He is the Managing Director of the family office, which oversees all of the family s profit and nonprofit operations. H&S Ventures serves as the manager of AAM and ADHC as well as a number of other business entities in which the Samuelis are involved. Schulman was a founding member, and is a past board member, of the Santa Clara Institute of Sports Law and Ethics. Schulman serves on the boards of Anaheim Arena Management, Anaheim Ducks Hockey Club, Anaheim Sports Holdings, Anaheim Ducks Foundation, HS Hockey Development and ECH He is also a current member of the boards of Telluride Ski and Golf Company and KDOC Television, and a founding member of the USC Sports Business Institute (SBI) Advisory Council. Schulman also serves on many nonprofit boards. He has been a member of the University of California, Irvine Foundation Board since 1991 and is on the Stewardship Committee. He was one of the founding members and past chair of the UCI Planned Giving Leadership Council. Schulman serves on the boards of the Samueli Foundation, Samueli Institute, the Orange County Jewish Campus and Anaheim Ducks Foundation. After earning his Bachelor of Arts in Economics from University of California, Berkeley, Schulman went on to the University of Santa Clara Law School. 45 TEAM MANAGEMENT Tim Ryan President/Chief Executive Officer, Anaheim Arena Management, LLC Executive Vice President/Chief Operating Officer, Anaheim Ducks Hockey Club, LLC RYAN is in his ninth season as Executive Vice President TIM /Chief Operating Officer for the Anaheim Ducks. In his current role, Ryan has led the club to record levels of success in business operations while leading aggressive community and fan development programs aimed at improved education, health and well-being, and recreation in the Southern California market. Ryan is now in his 21st year with Honda Center and 35th in arena management and event creation. In addition to his duties with the NHL club, he serves as President and Chief Executive Officer of Anaheim Arena Management, LLC (AAM), the management company of Honda Center. In his role, Ryan oversees one of the premier entertainment and sports venues in the world. In September 2012, Venues Today Magazine ranked Honda Center among the top 10 arenas in the world for live entertainment over the past decade, with a ranking of sixth overall in the country over that time. The facility is also a seven-time finalist for Venue of the Year as selected by Pollstar Magazine editors. Ryan has also led efforts to assure Honda Center is maintained and remains one of the world s top-of-the-line entertainment venues. This fall, the venue officially opened The Grand Terrace, a unique project that includes a 15,000-square-foot indoor/outdoor entertainment space, a new Wolfgang Puck restaurant and a team store more than triple the size of the previous location. While The Grand Terrace project represents the largest renovation in Honda Center history, Ryan also focuses on progressive improvements to keep the venue state-of-the-art, including the recent launch of Cisco StadiumVision throughout each level of the facility, creating a truly immersive entertainment environment. Through strategic planning, creative business development and event production, Ryan ensures the arena is also extremely active with a variety of first-class events. Under his guidance, the venue has recently hosted some of the world s top names in live entertainment. In early 2013, Honda Center was one of only 12 venues in North America to host the Rolling Stones. This fall, the venue has a lineup that includes acts such as Bon Jovi, Justin Timberlake and Michael Bublé. Ryan also played a key role in negotiations to bring a professional arena football team to Honda Center (the LA KISS), owned by legendary rockers Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons, original members of the band KISS. Ryan recently partnered with ESPN to develop the John Wooden Legacy college basketball tournament, which will see Honda Center serve as host for Championship Sunday this December. The venue will also host the annual Big West Basketball Tournament again in March, followed by the 2014 Men s NCAA West Regional. Over the years, Honda Center has also served as host to the 2003 World Gymnastics Championships, 2005 World Badminton Championships, five previous NCAA men s basketball tournament events and the first Frozen Four west of the Rocky Mountains (in 1999). Since 1993, more than 32.5 million people have been entertained at Honda Center, enjoying more than 3,300 events. As Executive Vice President/Chief Operating Officer of the Anaheim Ducks, Ryan oversees all business operations of the professional hockey team. He assumed his current dual roles on June 20, 2005 when the Ducks were purchased by Dr. Henry and Susan Samueli, owners of AAM. Ryan has also spearheaded several initiatives in conjunction with the Samuelis, including charitable programs that support approximately 500 nonprofit organizations annually, a team foundation that supports the community in the areas of education, youth hockey and health and wellness, and an expanded grass-roots marketing program. The Ducks launched THE RINKS development program in 2009, which supports and promotes youth ice and roller hockey in Southern California. The expanding program includes seven local skating facilities (four ice rinks and three inline facilities). The club also launched the first-ever Orange County High School Hockey League in 2008 (named the Anaheim Ducks High School Hockey League). The league has grown to 27 teams, including 2013 national champion Santa Margarita Catholic High School. Funded by the Anaheim Ducks Foundation, the club s education-based youth hockey program (S.C.O.R.E. Scholastic Curriculum of Recreation and Education) has reached more than 220,000 local school children over the last eight years. The Ducks also have a 5,500-member Kids Club, the largest in the NHL (among all U.S.- based teams). In 1992, after a long career at the Long Beach Arena, Ryan joined the then-arrowhead Pond of Anaheim (operated by Ogden Facility Management) as Assistant General Manager. He was promoted to General Manager in 1998 and was named Pollstar Magazine Facility Executive of the Year for During that time, Ryan was also charged with overseeing a number of other Ogden facilities and served as a consultant on various major entertainment projects. Near the end of 2003, the management contract for the arena was purchased by AAM, and Ryan was named President/CEO of both the company and the arena. Ryan is active in both entertainment industry and in the local community. He serves on the boards of several nonprofit groups, including Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County, Los Angeles Sports Council, Orangewood Children s Foundation, the Stars and Stripes Tournament and the Tiger Woods Foundation. Ryan graduated from California State University, Long Beach in 1979 with a Bachelor s Degree in Finance. 46 TEAM MANAGEMENT Bob Murray Executive Vice President and General Manager Anaheim Ducks Hockey Club, LLC MURRAY is in his 39th consecutive year in the National BOB Hockey League, his sixth as Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Anaheim Ducks. He was named to his current position on Nov. 12, 2008 after spending the previous three-plus seasons as the club s Senior Vice President of Hockey Operations. Murray was a finalist for NHL General Manager of the Year in The Ducks finished the regular season with the third-best record in the NHL ( , second in the West). Anaheim finished with the best winning (points) percentage in club history (.688), besting the 2007 club ( ,.671). In addition to improving the NHL club, Murray has restocked the club s prospect pool. In February 2013, The Hockey News graded the Ducks as having the second-best group of prospects in the NHL. The Ducks are the only NHL team to have three players ranked in the magazine s Top 50 Prospects with John Gibson (#11), Hampus Lindholm (#12), and Jakob Silfverberg (#18). Murray has made other critical moves to help the Ducks qualify for the playoffs in previous seasons. In 2011, after Jonas Hiller was unexpectedly stricken with vertigo in February, Murray acquired goaltenders Ray Emery (free agent) and Dan Ellis (trade). Both Emery (7-2-0) and Ellis (8-3-1) played extremely well down the stretch, leading the Ducks on a climb that took them from 11th place to a fourth-place finish in the Western Conference. After a series of mid-season roster moves, the Ducks made a late charge to qualify for the playoffs, going on to beat the Presidents Trophy-winning San Jose Sharks in the Western Conference Quarterfinals. That made Anaheim the fifth team in the expansion era ( ) to upset the league s top regular season team in the first round. The Ducks fell to Detroit in a dramatic, sevengame series in the Conference Semifinals. Prior to being named Executive Vice President and General Manager, Murray was the club s Senior Vice President of Hockey Operations for three-plus seasons. He was named to the post on July 14, Much of Murray s work behind the scenes led directly to many successful trades and other player transactions by Anaheim. During that three-year period, the Ducks won a Stanley Cup (2007), a Pacific Division title (2007), and qualified for the playoffs each season. Murray s previous responsibilities as Senior Vice President of Hockey Operations included overseeing all aspects of player development and serving as General Manager of Anaheim s American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate (previously Portland and Iowa). Murray was the General Manager of the Portland Pirates from through The Pirates went to the Conference Finals twice (2006 & 2008), appearing in six playoff rounds. Between 2005 and 2008 (three seasons), Anaheim and Portland combined to win 10 and appear in 14 playoff rounds, both the most of any organization in hockey. Murray was a member of the Chicago Blackhawks organization for 25 years, serving as General Manager from He was named the sixth General Manager in team history on July 3, He was promoted to the post after serving as Assistant General Manager under Bob Pulford for two seasons. Before joining upper-management, Murray was named the Director of Player Personnel in 1991 and was largely responsible for the club s NHL Entry Draft selections over eight seasons. Drafted by the Blackhawks in 1974, Murray spent his entire 1,008-game, 15-year career in a Chicago uniform. He became just the fourth player in Blackhawks history to reach the 1,000-game plateau in In addition, he became the first defenseman in club history to appear in 100 postseason contests, reaching the mark during the 1990 Stanley Cup Playoffs. 47 TEAM MANAGEMENT David McNab Senior Vice President of Hockey Operations Anaheim Ducks Hockey Club, LLC An original member of the Ducks, DAVID MCNAB is now in his 36th consecutive year in the NHL and 21st with Anaheim. McNab served as Anaheim s Assistant General Manager for 14 seasons before being promoted to his current position in His duties include overseeing all aspects of player development, having an expertise on the new Collective Bargaining Agreement and its relationship to the salary cap in the NHL, contract and arbitration negotiation, player evaluation and scouting. McNab s impact on the Ducks is significant. He has been part of Anaheim s run to two Stanley Cup Finals (2003 & 2007), including a championship in The club advanced to the Conference Finals in 2006 and the Conference Semifinals in In recent years, McNab has scouted and signed numerous collegiate free agents who have made major contributions to the success of the club. Prior to being named as the Ducks Assistant General Manager in December of 1995, the 57- year-old McNab was the club s first Director of Player Personnel and was largely responsible for the team s selections in the NHL Entry and Supplemental Drafts. McNab has also held the position as General Manager of the Ducks top farm team in the American Hockey League for six seasons (the Baltimore Bandits during the season and the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks from ) while also working on the AHL s competition committee for many of those years. Considered to be one of the hardest working and knowledgeable scouts in the National Hockey League, McNab began his professional scouting career in 1978 with the Washington Capitals, where he spent four seasons. In 1982, McNab was signed by the Hartford Whalers, where he spent seven seasons as a scout, the last two as the Director of Player Recruitment. He then joined the New York Rangers in 1989, where he worked for four seasons before leaving to join the Disneyowned Ducks in His work with the Rangers helped the club to the 1994 Stanley Cup championship. A graduate of the University of Wisconsin in 1978 with a degree in Communication Arts, McNab was also a goaltender on one of the greatest college hockey teams of all-time, the 1977 University of Wisconsin Badgers NCAA championship team. He was drafted by the St. Louis Blues in the ninth round of the 1975 NHL Entry Draft (151st overall). McNab has worked on numerous occasions for USA Hockey, both as an Assistant General Manager for the United States in the World Championships on three different occasions, as well as serving as a consultant for the 1984, 1988 and 1992 United States Olympic Teams. He has also been a three-time member of the selection committee that votes for the Hobey Baker Award, college hockey s version of the Heisman Trophy. A member of one of the most respected families in the NHL, McNab is the son of the late Max McNab and brother of Peter McNab. Max played on the 1950 Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings and was a former general manager with the Washington Capitals and New Jersey Devils. He was also a recipient of the 1998 Lester Patrick Award given annually for outstanding service to hockey in the United States. Peter played in 954 NHL games, scoring 363 goals and 813 points in a 14-year career. Peter is currently a broadcaster with the Colorado Avalanche. David McNab was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, but grew up in San Diego, California and graduated from Point Loma High School in San Diego in He became a U.S. citizen in He and his wife, Kari, were married in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1989 and have two daughters, Ali (22) and Erica (21). With a record for 66 points in , Boudreau led Anaheim to its second Pacific Division title in franchise history and eighth berth in the Stanley Cup Playoffs with the No. 2 seed. The club s.688 winning percentage was the best regular season mark in franchise history, while its third-place finish in the overall league standings was the club s highest all-time. 51 COACHING STAFF Bob Woods Assistant Coach Brad Lauer Assistant Coach WOODS is in his third season as Assistant Coach of BOB the Anaheim Ducks. Named to his current post on Dec. 2, 2011, Woods has helped lead the Ducks to a record and a Pacific Division title in 106 contests under Head Coach Bruce Boudreau. Woods, 45, also served as an assistant coach under Boudreau with the Washington Capitals, joining the NHL club on June 22, Boudreau and Woods helped the Capitals earn the top seed in the Eastern Conference in both 2010 and 2011, including the Presidents Trophy as the top NHL club for the regular season with a record (121 points). Prior to , Woods coached Washington s AHL affiliate from , taking over as head coach of the Hershey Bears when Boudreau was hired by the Capitals on Nov. 22, In , Woods guided Hershey to a Calder Cup championship, defeating the Manitoba Moose in six games. In his two seasons as an AHL head coach (145 games), Woods compiled an record in the regular season and a postseason record. In addition, Woods assisted Boudreau in 2006 when Hershey captured the Calder Cup championship. 52 COACHING STAFF Scott Niedermayer Assistant Coach NIEDERMAYER is in his second season as Assistant Coach of the Anaheim Ducks. Niedermayer, SCOTT who retired from the NHL on June 22, 2010 and remained with the Ducks as a Hockey Operations consultant, was named to his post on Jan. 11, Niedermayer was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in the Player Category on July 9, 2013, becoming the third Anaheim Duck player to be elected and the first to play more than a single season. As the first Anaheim defenseman, Niedermayer joins former forwards Jari Kurri ( ) and Adam Oates ( ) in the Hockey Hall of the Fame. Signed as a free agent by Anaheim on Aug. 4, 2005 and named the sixth captain in club history on Oct. 3, 2005, Niedermayer helped the Ducks become the first team from California to win hockey s ultimate prize in He was presented with the Conn Smythe Trophy as the Most Valuable Player of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Niedermayer appeared in his final 371 regular season NHL contests in an Anaheim uniform, scoring =264 points with 306 penalty minutes. Niedermayer is the Ducks all-time leader in goals, assists, points and power play goals (39) among club defensemen. Roloson originally signed on with Anaheim in a consultant role on Feb. 13, 2013, focusing on the club s AHL affiliate in Norfolk. 64 2013 Ducks Fall to Detroit in Game 7 of Opening Round THE DUCKS faced off with a familiar foe in the opening round of the 2013 postseason, matching up with the Detroit Red Wings for the sixth time. In a hard-fought series between the two rivals, Detroit would prevail in a Game 7, the first one for the Ducks since falling to Detroit in the 2009 conference semifinal. The Ducks got out to a 3-gamesto-2 lead in the series, only to succumb to the Red Wings in Game 6 at Joe Louis Arena and Game 7 at Honda Center. Anaheim made an epic comeback in Game 6, erasing a two-goal deficit late in regulation on goals by Emerson Etem and Bobby Ryan. But the Red Wings would ultimately prevail when Henrik Zetterberg connected on a slap shot just 1:04 into overtime. In a season marked by a number of dramatic comebacks, the Ducks couldn t quite muster another one in a disappointing Game 7 defeat. Trailing by two goals for most of the third period, Anaheim got within one with a power play strike by The Ducks suffered a heartbreaking loss to the Red Wings in Game 7. But Weber scored a crushing goal from the left point with just 35.3 seconds left in regulation, and Jerred Smithson buried the Ducks with a goal 1:57 into overtime to snatch a 4-3 victory. That momentum appeared to carry over to Game 6 in Nashville, as Nick Spaling scored twice including the game-winner in the third period and David Legwand added a late empty-netter to finish off Anaheim with a 4-2 victory Ducks take down Presidents Trophy-winning Sharks IN EARNING THEIR franchise-record fourth straight trip to the postseason, the Ducks met up with the rival San Jose Sharks in the Western Conference Quarterfinals. It was the first time the two California teams had battled in the postseason. In taking down the Presidents Trophy-winning Sharks in six games, the Ducks became just the fifth team to upset the NHL s best regular season team in the first round since the Expansion Era began in The Ducks clinched the series with a decisive 4-1 victory at Honda Center in which Jonas Hiller continued to thwart the Sharks with 36 saves. Giguere had 63 on April 10, Hiller was outstanding the entire postseason, posting a 2.23 goals-against average,.943 save percentage and two shutouts in his Stanley Cup Playoff debut Ducks fall to Stars in six games PLAYING AS THE fourth seed in the Western Conference and looking to repeat as Stanley Cup champions, the Ducks came up short of that goal by losing to Dallas in six games of the Western Conference Quarterfinals. Holding home-ice advantage meant little in the series, as the Stars came to Honda Center and took the first two games. The Ducks scored four unanswered goals (two from Chris Pronger) in the first 26 minutes of Game 3 in Dallas and held on for a 4-2 victory. But even with the return of Corey Perry (who had been out for more than five weeks with a lacerated thigh), Anaheim came up short in their bid to tie the series after a 3-1 defeat to Dallas. Back at home in Orange County for Game 5, the Ducks played arguably their best game of the series. Perry opened the scoring with a goal in the first period and four other Ducks followed suit in a 5-2 victory over the Stars. J.S. Giguere also stopped 40 shots in the win. Anaheim s season would come to an abrupt end in Game 6 at Dallas, however. Perry would score the only goal between the teams in the first two periods, but the Stars would light the lamp four times in the third en route to a series-clinching 4-1 win Ducks win a historic Stanley Cup title THE DUCKS BECAME the first California team in NHL history to capture the Stanley Cup when they defeated the Ottawa Senators 4 games to 1 in the Final. Captain Scott Niedermayer, who earned his fourth Stanley Cup title, was named the Conn Smythe winner as MVP of the playoffs for the first time. 67 a 10-2 mark at Honda Center. Each of their clinching victories in all four rounds came at home, concluding with a 6-2 romp over the Senators in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final. The Ducks run to the Cup began with a dominating 4-games-to-1 victory over the Minnesota Wild in the first round. Backup Ilya Bryzgalov (one of the heroes of the 06 playoffs for Anaheim) started and won the first three games of the series in place of J.S. Giguere, who was tending to the health problems of his newborn son, Maxime. Giguere went back in net midway through the Ducks Game 4 loss to Minnesota, and was the starter the rest of the way. He saved 26 of 27 shots in Anaheim s clinching 4-1 Game 5 victory over the Wild, one of several exemplary performances for the netminder in the postseason. Anaheim rolled over the Vancouver Canucks in the Western Conference Finals with a second straight 4-games-to- 1 decision. Andy McDonald had a had trick in a 5-1 victory in Game 1 at Honda Center, paving the way for a team-leading 10 goals in the postseason. After dropping Game 2 in overtime, 2-1, the Ducks reeled off three straight wins, including Games 3 and 4 in Vancouver. That Western Conference Final series would turn out to be the most grueling for the Ducks in their postseason run, as it took a hard-fought six games to knock off the Detroit Red Wings. Niedermayer again came to the rescue in Game 5 of that series in Detroit, scoring a desperation goal with just 47.3 seconds left in regulation. Then in overtime, Mc- Donald forced a turnover in the Detroit zone that allowed Teemu Selanne to score the game-winner in an improbable 2-1 victory. The Ducks closed out the series with a tense 4-3 victory in Game 6, after taking a 3-0 lead and then withstanding three Detroit goals in the third period to hang on. All that stood between the Ducks and the Stanley Cup was a date in the Final with Eastern Conference power Ottawa. But Anaheim shut down a Senators offense that had led the NHL in playoff scoring, thanks in great part to the prolific checking line of Travis Moen, Samuel Pahlsson and Rob Niedermayer. That trio put the clamps on the Senators best scorers, as they had done to opposing top lines throughout the postseason. The Ducks dropped Game 3 in Ottawa, but came back with a vital road victory in Game 4 (thanks in part to two McDonald goals). That paved the way to a convincing 6-2 victory back at Honda Center in Game 5, giving Anaheim that momentous Stanley Cup championship Ducks make a run to the Western Conference Final THE DUCKS MADE a valiant run through the Stanley Cup playoffs before falling in five games to Edmonton in the Western Conference Final. Anaheim s first step came in an emotional first-round series with Calgary, during which the Ducks trailed 3 games to 2. But a tense 2-1 victory at home in Game 6 sent the series back to Calgary, where Ilya Bryzgalov and the Ducks shut out the Flames 3-0. That was the first of three straight shutouts for the rookie Bryzgalov, as he also blanked Colorado in Games 1 and 2 of the Western Conference Semifinals. It marked the first time a rookie had pulled off that feat in the playoffs since Toronto s Frank McCool in Bryzgalov also held the Avs scoreless for the first 19:33 of Game 3, running his shutout streak to 249 minutes, 15 seconds, second all time in NHL playoff history. That Game 3 was notable for another reason, as Joffrey Lupul became the first player in NHL history to score four goals in a playoff game, including the overtime winner. The Ducks 4-3 victory in that game was followed by a 4-1 decision in Game 4, giving the Ducks a convincing sweep. But the Ducks ran into a hot Edmonton team led by goaltender Dwayne Roloson in the conference final. Giguere was outstanding the entire postseason for Anaheim, posting five shutouts and winning the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player of the playoffs. Giguere had the longest playoff overtime shutout streak in NHL history, playing his entire 168:27 career playoff overtime minutes without giving up a goal. He also had a playoff shutout streak of 217:54, including three straight shutouts May 12-16, the-fifth longest playoff streak in NHL history. The Ducks only lost two games going into the Final, sweeping Detroit in the first round and doing the same to Minnesota in the Western Conference Final. In between, Anaheim went six games with Dallas before edging the Stars, 4-3. Game 1 of that series was an epic five-overtime thriller in which the Ducks ultimately prevailed, 5-4. The Ducks went 7-0 in overtime during the playoffs, becoming the first team in NHL playoff history to go undefeated in OT when playing in at least six such contests Ducks Swept by Detroit J.S.
