The Ducks put together a recordbreaking regular season, leading to high hopes for these playoffs For the second straight year, the Ducks charged through the regular season campaign on their way to a high seeding in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. They can only hope this time it parlays into more postseason success. In a shortened 48- game season last year, Anaheim rolled to a The Ducks have been among the NHL s best this season, and hope it can carry over to postseason success B Y A D A M B R A D Y record, a Pacific Division title and a No. 2 playoff seed, only to be vanquished in the opening round by the rival Red Wings. The theme coming into camp this season was Unfinished Business, a slogan that adorns the backs of players t-shirts, and an approach that has seemingly inspired the team to even greater heights. The Ducks were among the top teams in the NHL from start to finish and headed into this postseason with viable hopes of lifting another Stanley Cup when it s all said and done. It was a season marked by a couple of eye-opening streaks, including a run of 18 wins in 19 games (December 6 through January 15) that was matched only by the Montreal Canadiens. Within that run was a franchise-record 10 straight wins, making them just the third Western Conference team to win 10 consecutive since There was also a lengthy stretch in which the Ducks were virtually unbeatable at Honda Center, getting off to a start at home that established them as just the fourth NHL team in 40 years to earn a point in their first 22 home games. They topped it all off with a second straight Pacific Division title (clinched in an April 9 victory over the chasing Sharks), assuring Anaheim a high seed in these Stanley Cup Playoffs. Also among Anaheim s accomplishments was a litany of other team records: Most wins Most points Most home wins Most road wins Longest home point streak 8 DUCKS DIGEST Anaheim set a number of team records, including most wins, most goals and longest winning streak (10 in a row)

Corey Perry scored the game-winner with 5:31 left in the third period to push the Ducks to a 3-2 victory. October 13, 2013 The Ducks celebrated their 20-year anniversary by holding Throwback Night against the Ottawa Senators at Honda Center. The Ducks players wore vintage Mighty Ducks eggplantand-teal uniforms and just before the game, 15 members of the original ( ) Mighty Ducks were honored with a c e r e m o n i a l puck drop. The current Ducks didn t take long to get going after that. They scored two early goals in the first courtesy of Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf, recording a club-record 24 shots on goal in the period alone. They also set a team record with 56 shots in the game, rolling to a 4-1 victory in front of a soldout crowd of 17,174. November 8, 2013 Ryan Getzlaf had the first hat trick of his career in a 6-2 thrashing of the visiting Buffalo Sabres at Honda Center. Getzlaf recorded all three goals in the first period, marking just the fifth time in club history a player scored three goals in a single period, the second time it happened in the first. Getzlaf would earn a second hat trick December 21 at the Islanders, as the Ducks scored four times in the third in a 5-3 comeback victory. December 28, 2013 The Ducks won a franchise record 10th game in a row, but needed some dramatics to make it happen. After giving up the tying goal to visiting Phoenix with less than a minute left in regulation, Saku Koivu scored his second goal of the game 51 seconds into overtime to secure a 3-2 victory. January 15, 2014 Anaheim erupts for a team-record nine goals (including a record six on the power play) on their way to a 9-1 whitewashing of the Vancouver Canucks in front of another sellout crowd at Honda Center. The Ducks also joined join the Montreal Canadiens as the only teams in NHL history to win 18 of 19 games. January 25, 2014 In a history-making outdoor game at iconic Dodger Stadium, Jonas Hiller saved all 36 shots he faced in a 3-0 victory over the rival Kings. One of four Coors Light NHL Stadium Series games played this season, this one was played under a clear night sky in pleasant conditions and a temperature that never d r o p p e d below the low-60s. The Ducks got second-period goals from Corey Perry and Matt Beleskey, and added an empty-netter from Andrew Cogliano in the game s waning moments to secure a second straight victory in three nights over their rivals. March 31, 2014 In a season marked by a number of dramatic comebacks, the Ducks make one for the ages against the visiting Jets at Honda Center. Down 4-0 midway through the second period, Anaheim comes roaring back with four unanswered goals, including the game-tying strike from Corey Perry with 22.4 seconds left in regulation. Then just 16 seconds into overtime, Stephane Robidas rips home a slap shot to cap off the stunning 5-4 victory, the largest comeback win in franchise history. April 9, 2014 The Ducks clinch their second straight Pacific Division title (and their third in franchise history) with a convincing 5-2 victory over the rival Sharks in front of a standing-roomonly crowd of 17,322 at Honda Center. Patrick Maroon has two goals (the first m u l t i - g o a l game of his career) and rookie John Gibson stops 36 shots to earn his second straight win in his first two career NHL starts. first Hart Trophy. Corey Perry surpassed 40 goals for the second time in his career, the first when he scored 50 in his Hart-winning season. Having just turned 20 last January, Hampus Lindholm has enjoyed a fantastic rookie year in contributing to a stellar Anaheim defensive corps. Both Jonas Hiller and Frederik Andersen have been solid in net all season, with Andersen filling in admirably for the injured Viktor Fasth and winning 14 of his first 17 decisions (tied for most in that span to start a career in NHL history). All season long, it s been a special one for the Ducks, who throughout the year have celebrated their 20th anniversary as a franchise. Meanwhile, Ducks legend Teemu Selanne let it be known before the season that this would be his last, and he s made a season-long swan song that he and the rest of the Ducks hope will culminate with him raising another Stanley Cup. # DUCKS DIGEST 11

The gritty defenseman has been a key acquisition for the Ducks as they look to make a postseason run For years, Ducks fans knew Stephane Robidas as a thorn in their sides, a pest, a pain in the [choose your body part]. But it s funny how things change in this game. Suddenly Robidas is a major contributor to a Ducks team looking to make a run through these Stanley Cup Playoffs. The tough-as-nails defenseman (whose full name is Joseph Pierre Stéphane Robidas) spent 11 seasons with the former division rival Dallas Stars, playing a major role in eliminating Anaheim from the first round of the 2008 playoffs while engaging in countless other battles with the Ducks. But on March 4, Robidas (pronounced ROH-bi-dah) was acquired by the Ducks in a trade with Dallas for a conditional fourth-round draft pick, a hairpin turn in what has been a rough road this season for the 37-year-old. Last November 29, in a game against the Blackhawks, Robidas went crashing into the boards behind the net and broke his right leg. After enduring a difficult rehab, he was weeks away from returning to the ice when he was traded to Anaheim. He missed the Ducks next six games before suiting up March 18, where the 5-11, 190-pounder got back to doing what he does best. He helped endear himself to Ducks fans back on March 31 at Honda Center, slapping home an overtime game-winner to seal a dramatic 5-4 victory against the Jets, a game in which Anaheim once trailed 4-0. Following a recent Ducks practice, the noticeably easygoing Robidas talked about the adjustment of coming to Anaheim after so many years with the Stars. With the injury and the trade, how would you characterize this season? It s been a crazy year. I never thought this would have happened. That injury hap- B Y A D A M B R A D Y 12 DUCKS DIGEST

pened in November and I thought my season was over. But the doctor and the training staff in Dallas did a really good job of getting me back on the ice. When I came here, I got a chance to work with [Ducks Strength and Conditioning Coach Sean Skahan], and do everything I could to get back. It s been a big, big change for me, and things are totally different. You go from a team that hasn t been in the playoffs for the last five years to a team that s contending, that is at the top of the standings and wants to win a Stanley Cup. It s a big adjustment, but the players and the coaching staff have been very good to me and made me feel comfortable. It s been tough at times, but it s an easier transition coming to a team that s winning. That atmosphere is always nicer. It s tough to get traded, but did it make it easier that it was a team and a city like Anaheim? Oh, yeah. You talk about this area, and you can t get any better than that. You talk about the organization and the tradition the past few years, it s a top team in the league and a tough team to play against. Having a chance to get to play with these guys is a treat, and it s been a lot of fun so far. Obviously, I left behind a lot of good friends and teammates in Dallas, and my life was there. That s where I thought I d end up finishing my career and ending my days. In a matter of days, everything changed. But that s part of hockey. You ve been in some battles with these guys over the years, notably Corey Perry, but what was the reception like when you got here? [Laughs] It s more funny than anything, because that s all people talk about. I got to the locker room and Bruce said something to me and Corey, like, Is everything okay between you two? It s part of the game. He s a competitor and he s a tough guy to play against. He s got skills, and he plays with an edge. Most guys don t have both. You don t like to play against a guy like him because he can make you look really bad. It was never easy, so I m just happy I m on his side. Now we re teammates and we forget about the past. 14 DUCKS DIGEST Having a chance to get to play with these guys is a treat, and it s been a lot of fun so far. Obviously, I left behind a lot of good friends and teammates in Dallas, and my life was there. In a matter of days, everything changed. But that s part of hockey.

That s what I want to be known as, a guy who never gives up, a guy who is hard to play against, who plays well defensively and is going to be in your face all game. That s the way I came into this league, and the way I ve been able to make a name for myself in the NHL. [Laughs] I know I have, but I don t know if he has. Scoring an overtime game-winner is a great way to feel welcomed to a team, which you did in that comeback victory against Winnipeg [on March 31]. How did that one feel? It was unbelievable. It s going to sound funny, but I m not a goal-scorer, so every time I score a goal, it s a pretty good feeling. Having a chance to score in overtime is even better, and I was able to help the team win a big hockey game. I ve said it all along I just want to help the team win, and I ll do whatever I can to help. In that game, I was lucky enough to put that one in. You re still early in your stint with the Ducks, so what do you want fans here to know about you? I take pride in being a hard worker. That s what I want to be known as, a guy who never gives up, a guy who is hard to play against, who plays well defensively and is going to be in your face all game. That s the way I came into this league, and the way I ve been able to make a name for myself in the NHL. That s the reason why I m still playing at this level. It s not because I score goals or I m one of the most offensive guys. I m not a Cam Fowler, but I can make plays, block shots, finish my checks and just be hard to play against. That s what I take pride in and what I d like to be known as. # DUCKS DIGEST 15

Jim Cuzzolina has countless stories to tell from his 89 years, including the last 20 as a dedicated Ducks fan B Y J E N E L Y N R U S S O S P E C I A L T O D U C K S D I G E S T Editor s Note: As part of the Ducks 20th anniversary celebration, we are highlighting the unique stories of some of our Season Seat Holders who have been with us from the beginning. JIM CUZZOLINA is a storyteller. If you have the time, he has the stories. Like the ones where he recounts his tour of duty as a U.S. Army Air Corps bomber pilot, flying 12 missions over Japan in the Pacific Ocean theatre of World War II. Or how his post-war degree in Aeronautical Engineering landed him in California on the team that did the quality check of the Apollo spacecraft before it made its way to the moon in And Jim Cuzzolina loves to talk sports. A native of Pennsylvania, the 89-year old (nicknamed Cuzz ) will tell you about how he grew up 100 miles east of Pittsburgh, where he spent the winter months skating and playing pond hockey on frozen waters in the city of Altoona. Before we could skate, we had to check to see if the ice was safe, says Cuzzolina, so we would use horses. If the horses could walk on the ice, it was safe for us. Cuzzolina never participated in any organized hockey league, but played in enough pick-up games to know his way around the game. A self-proclaimed football guy, he was forced to call upon his hockey skills during his freshman year at Penn State. As a walk-on running back for the Nittany Lions, the freshman football players were often used as scrimmage opponents for the school s varsity hockey team. There wasn t a hockey arena around, so they flooded the tennis courts and we d play the varsity hockey team there, recalls Cuzzolina. There was checking all over the ice, and no helmets or pads back then. We had a saying: The puck may get by, but not the guy. That s when I discovered I liked being a defenseman. His playing days were cut short, as Cuzzolina left college in 1943 after his freshman year to serve his country during World War II. But once the war was over, Cuzzolina returned to Penn State to finish his degree and meet up with his long-time sweetheart, Gloria, whom he married in DUCKS DIGEST 17

1948. Shortly after, he and his new bride headed west as he began a career in the aerospace industry in Southern California, where he has been ever since. Despite being a long way from Altoona and his pond hockey days, Cuzzolina never gave up interest in the sport, and when it was announced the Mighty Ducks were being born in Anaheim, the Fullerton resident was among the first group of fans to be a part of Orange County s NHL debut. During the team s early seasons, while Paul Kariya was racking up the points, it was Mighty Ducks enforcer Todd Ewen that Cuzzolina enjoyed watching. He was one of the best fighters I ve ever seen, says Cuzzolina of the former Ducks alternate captain. He had a way of tying up his opponents. He never seemed to lose. Cuzzolina watched Ducks games alongside wife Gloria, who loved hockey as well, from their season seats near the Zamboni tunnel close to the glass. That was a great spot, he says. You could see the entire length of the ice and watch the game develop. He remembers one game when a Mighty Ducks slap shot shattered the partition in front of them. After that, my wife wasn t so sure that we had such good seats, Cuzzolina can be found at Ducks games near center ice, usually accompanied by one of his and Gloria s three children. Cuzzolina says with a smile. I told her if the puck ever came her way, I d protect her. He and Gloria attended games together until she passed away in But he continues to be a dedicated fan, and these days you can find him in his seats near center ice, usually accompanied by one of their three children. His favorite Ducks players from more recent years include Scott Niedermayer, Teemu Selanne (of course) and ironman Andrew Cogliano. I loved watching Scotty [Niedermayer] skate, how he d make his way through the middle of the ice, especially the year they won the Cup, says Cuzzolina of the former Ducks captain. It s great to see him as a part of the coaching staff now. And Cogliano, that kid is all over the ice, active all the time, always in the right spot. He s fun to watch. On the eve of his 90th birthday this summer, Cuzzolina remains active himself, making his way back to Pennsylvania several times a year, keeping busy with his family and supporting his favorite sports teams. As a member of The Greatest Generation, Cuzzolina has had a life full of adventures many of us could only dream of experiencing, and a lifetime of stories to go with them. In his core, he s a sports fan, with a memory that s as sharp as a tack, who enjoys football, baseball, and of course Ducks hockey. And whether it s reliving the significant moments of a Ducks playoff victory or the subtle details of a hockey brawl, Cuzzolina has a story to share, to anyone who will listen. # DUCKS DIGEST 19

Teemu Selanne I still remember the first playoff game in Winnipeg when it was a white out and there were 16,000 people all wearing white. It was amazing, and I remember how loud it was and everything. But obviously the year we won the Cup, you can t really compare that to anything else. You can t even describe that. There was so much hard work and dedication and passion. There was also a little bit of luck, where everything has to go right for you to enjoy that. But when you finally do it, it s unbelievable. 20 DUCKS DIGEST

Francois Beauchemin Scoring a goal in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final [in 2007]. I scored a one-timer on a pass back from Andy McDonald, and that s obviously a goal I ll remember for the rest of my life. We were up 2-1, and that made it 3-1 going into the third. That goal was really special, and will always stick out. DUCKS DIGEST 21

Kyle Palmieri The series against Detroit last year was a pretty incredible experience. I still have the picture with all the glow sticks at Honda Center as the background on my phone. It was surreal getting out there and seeing all that. Your first playoff series is something you ll always remember. I remember every day, every game so vividly. It s a pretty incredible feeling to be in the NHL playoffs and competing for the Stanley Cup. It was definitely my fondest playoff memory, but hopefully, I ll make more this year. 22 DUCKS DIGEST

Nick Bonino For me, it started in high school in Connecticut. We lost in the semis in overtime. I had two breakaways and came back the next year in the finals. We were down 3-0 and came back in double overtime and won, 5-4. That was a pretty exciting moment. We played at the Yale Whale [Ingalls Rink, home of the Yale Bulldogs]. It was packed. In my sophomore year in college [Boston University], we came back from 3-1 in the last two minutes and I scored the game-tying goal [with 17.4 seconds left in the third period to force overtime]. That was the craziest game I ve ever been a part of. That was a really cool memory. DUCKS DIGEST 23

Ben Lovejoy My earliest playoff memory would definitely be high school. My team lost in the finals of the New England Prep School Championship to the school Nick Bonino went to [Avon Old Farms]. He wasn t there yet. We lost in overtime to a very good team. My first NHL playoff memory was a seven-game series against Tampa Bay as a rookie with Pittsburgh. It s a jungle. You go in front of the net and just get mauled. Everybody is giving everything they got, and it s fun to be a part of. Our current goalie coach Dwayne Roloson was in net for Tampa and had the grayest beard ever. He looked like he was 50 out there, but he was making every save. He was so good. They were able to knock us out in seven games. 24 DUCKS DIGEST

Saku Koivu The most memorable playoff year for me was 2002 when I came back from cancer. I only had played two regular season games and had just enough time to get back in shape for the playoffs. We were the eighth seed and Boston was the first seed, and we ended up winning that series. I had the gamewinning goal in the third period of one of the games. That was very emotional after coming back from a tough year and tough treatments, so that s the first one that comes to my mind. DUCKS DIGEST 25

Stephane Robidas It was probably in 2008 when we won in a fourth overtime against San Jose. It was one of the longest games I ve ever been a part of. I ve played in two others before: one in 2003 in Anaheim and one in Vancouver, and I lost both games. To be able to win that one was pretty special, especially because we clinched the series.

Corey Perry Just lifting the Cup, and having my family there, was pretty special. It was kind of a thank you to them for being there and showing all the hard work and money they spent. That was special. Any time you can lift the Cup, and really experience it, it s a special day for everybody. It never gets old. When you win once, you want that feeling again. DUCKS DIGEST 27

Ryan Getzlaf When we won the Cup, that whole process was really fun, and I enjoyed every minute of it. The big thing that sticks out is obviously the celebration at the end and seeing the look on everybody s faces after the work we put in and the expectations we d arrived at. That was the most special part. 28 DUCKS DIGEST

Bruce Boudreau Anytime you win a championship, it s a special moment, and I ve had quite a few. But to win the Calder Cup with Hershey [of the AHL] was pretty incredible. It was more the semifinals that I remember, because the finals were pretty anticlimactic. In the semifinals, we beat Portland [the Ducks AHL affiliate at the time] in overtime of Game 7, and it was quite an emotional deal. DUCKS DIGEST 29

Hampus Lindholm Favorite hockey player growing up I would say Kenny Jönsson, but when I started watching NHL hockey it became Nicklas Lidström. Favorite hockey moment of your career Probably my last year as a pro in Sweden, when I was 16 or 17. We won the whole thing and moved up to the first league. That was pretty big. Do you have any pregame routines or superstitions? We have a team warmup, and then I do my stretches. Nothing too big. Favorite TV shows Entourage and Blue Mountain State Favorite movie The Hobbit. I m a big fan of those movies. Favorite music artist I m a fan of all kinds of music, but Avicii is probably my favorite. Favorite food Swedish kebab pizza. I only think about Swedish pizza. Favorite restaurant in Orange County Selanne Steak Tavern Thoughts on living in Orange County It s nice, I must say. It s my first year, and I m spoiled with the sun. It s lovely. 64 2013 Ducks Fall to Detroit in Game 7 of Opening Round THE DUCKS faced off with a familiar foe in the opening round of the 2013 postseason, matching up with the Detroit Red Wings for the sixth time. In a hard-fought series between the two rivals, Detroit would prevail in a Game 7, the first one for the Ducks since falling to Detroit in the 2009 conference semifinal. The Ducks got out to a 3-gamesto-2 lead in the series, only to succumb to the Red Wings in Game 6 at Joe Louis Arena and Game 7 at Honda Center. Anaheim made an epic comeback in Game 6, erasing a two-goal deficit late in regulation on goals by Emerson Etem and Bobby Ryan. But the Red Wings would ultimately prevail when Henrik Zetterberg connected on a slap shot just 1:04 into overtime. In a season marked by a number of dramatic comebacks, the Ducks couldn t quite muster another one in a disappointing Game 7 defeat. Trailing by two goals for most of the third period, Anaheim got within one with a power play strike by The Ducks suffered a heartbreaking loss to the Red Wings in Game 7. Francois Beauchemin with just over three minutes left, but couldn t get the tying goal in a 3-2 defeat Heartbreaking Loss in Game 5 Leads to Defeat to Nashville THE DUCKS HAD HIGH HOPES for their first round series with Nashville after sealing the fourth seed in the Western Conference and home ice with back-to-back wins over the Kings to close the regular season. But Shea Weber, Pekka Rinne, Mike Fisher 62 DUCKS DIGEST

A late Shea Weber (left) goal in Game 5 led to a six-game victory for Nashville over the Ducks. and the rest of the Predators had other ideas. After the two teams split the first four games, Anaheim actually appeared destined to take control of the series while holding a one-goal lead (thanks in part to an incredible Bobby Ryan breakaway goal) late in Game 5 at Honda Center. But Weber scored a crushing goal from the left point with just 35.3 seconds left in regulation, and Jerred Smithson buried the Ducks with a goal 1:57 into overtime to snatch a 4-3 victory. That momentum appeared to carry over to Game 6 in Nashville, as Nick Spaling scored twice including the game-winner in the third period and David Legwand added a late empty-netter to finish off Anaheim with a 4-2 victory Ducks take down Presidents Trophy-winning Sharks IN EARNING THEIR franchise-record fourth straight trip to the postseason, the Ducks met up with the rival San Jose Sharks in the Western Conference Quarterfinals. It was the first time the two California teams had battled in the postseason. In taking down the Presidents Trophy-winning Sharks in six games, the Ducks became just the fifth team to upset the NHL s best regular season team in the first round since the Expansion Era began in The Ducks clinched the series with a decisive 4-1 victory at Honda Center in which Jonas Hiller continued to thwart the Sharks with 36 saves. That series victory advanced Anaheim to a meeting with another longtime rival, the Detroit Red Wings, in the Western Conference Semifinals. Facing off in the post- DUCKS DIGEST 63

Jonas Hiller was a force in net for the Ducks as they upended the Sharks in the first round. season for the fifth time, the Ducks and Wings battled through seven intense games before the Ducks were edged in Game 7 in Detroit on a Dan Cleary goal with three minutes left. The Ducks most dramatic win in the duel came when they evened the series in Game 2 on a Todd Marchant goal in triple overtime. Jonas Hiller had 59 saves on the night, the most for the Ducks in a postseason game since J.S. Giguere had 63 on April 10, Hiller was outstanding the entire postseason, posting a 2.23 goals-against average,.943 save percentage and two shutouts in his Stanley Cup Playoff debut Ducks fall to Stars in six games PLAYING AS THE fourth seed in the Western Conference and looking to repeat as Stanley Cup champions, the Ducks came up short of that goal by losing to Dallas in six games of the Western Conference Quarterfinals. Holding home-ice advantage meant little in the series, as the Stars came to Honda Center and took the first two games. The Ducks scored four unanswered goals (two from Chris Pronger) in the first 26 minutes of Game 3 in Dallas and held on for a 4-2 victory. But even with the return of Corey Perry (who had been out for more than five weeks with a lacerated thigh), Anaheim came up short in their bid to tie the series after a 3-1 defeat to Dallas. Back at home in Orange County for Game 5, the Ducks played arguably their best game of the series. Perry opened the scoring with a goal in the first period and four other Ducks followed suit in a 5-2 victory over the Stars. J.S. Giguere also stopped 40 shots in the win. Anaheim s season would come to an abrupt end in Game 6 at Dallas, however. Perry would score the only goal between the teams in the first two periods, but the Stars would light the lamp four times in the third en route to a series-clinching 4-1 win Ducks win a historic Stanley Cup title THE DUCKS BECAME the first California team in NHL history to capture the Stanley Cup when they defeated the Ottawa Senators 4 games to 1 in the Final. Captain Scott Niedermayer, who earned his fourth Stanley Cup title, was named the Conn Smythe winner as MVP of the playoffs for the first time. Anaheim tore through most of the postseason, racking up a 16-5 record, including 64 DUCKS DIGEST

a 10-2 mark at Honda Center. Each of their clinching victories in all four rounds came at home, concluding with a 6-2 romp over the Senators in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final. The Ducks run to the Cup began with a dominating 4-games-to-1 victory over the Minnesota Wild in the first round. Backup Ilya Bryzgalov (one of the heroes of the 06 playoffs for Anaheim) started and won the first three games of the series in place of J.S. Giguere, who was tending to the health problems of his newborn son, Maxime. Giguere went back in net midway through the Ducks Game 4 loss to Minnesota, and was the starter the rest of the way. He saved 26 of 27 shots in Anaheim s clinching 4-1 Game 5 victory over the Wild, one of several exemplary performances for the netminder in the postseason. Anaheim rolled over the Vancouver Canucks in the Western Conference Finals with a second straight 4-games-to- 1 decision. Andy McDonald had a had trick in a 5-1 victory in Game 1 at Honda Center, paving the way for a team-leading 10 goals in the postseason. After dropping Game 2 in overtime, 2-1, the Ducks reeled off three straight wins, including Games 3 and 4 in Vancouver. Scott Niedermayer slipped a goal past distracted Canucks goalie Roberto Luongo in the second overtime of Game 5 at Honda Center to send the Ducks to their second With a five-game victory over Ottawa in the Final, the Ducks became the first California team in history to capture the Stanley Cup. straight conference final. That Western Conference Final series would turn out to be the most grueling for the Ducks in their postseason run, as it took a hard-fought six games to knock off the Detroit Red Wings. Niedermayer again came to the rescue in Game 5 of that series in Detroit, scoring a desperation goal with just 47.3 seconds left in regulation. Then in overtime, Mc- Donald forced a turnover in the Detroit zone that allowed Teemu Selanne to score the game-winner in an improbable 2-1 victory. The Ducks closed out the series with a tense 4-3 victory in Game 6, after taking a 3-0 lead and then withstanding three Detroit goals in the third period to hang on. All that stood between the Ducks and the Stanley Cup was a date in the Final with Eastern Conference power Ottawa. But Anaheim shut down a Senators offense that had led the NHL in playoff scoring, thanks in great part to the prolific checking line of Travis Moen, Samuel Pahlsson and Rob Niedermayer. That trio put the clamps on the Senators best scorers, as they had done to opposing top lines throughout the postseason. Moen and Pahlsson had the game-winning goals in Ducks victories in DUCKS DIGEST 65

Games 1 and 2, respectively, part of a 15-goal and 34-point output by that line in 21 postseason games. The Ducks dropped Game 3 in Ottawa, but came back with a vital road victory in Game 4 (thanks in part to two McDonald goals). That paved the way to a convincing 6-2 victory back at Honda Center in Game 5, giving Anaheim that momentous Stanley Cup championship Ducks make a run to the Western Conference Final THE DUCKS MADE a valiant run through the Stanley Cup playoffs before falling in five games to Edmonton in the Western Conference Final. Anaheim s first step came in an emotional first-round series with Calgary, during which the Ducks trailed 3 games to 2. But a tense 2-1 victory at home in Game 6 sent the series back to Calgary, where Ilya Bryzgalov and the Ducks shut out the Flames 3-0. That was the first of three straight shutouts for the rookie Bryzgalov, as he also blanked Colorado in Games 1 and 2 of the Western Conference Semifinals. It marked the first time a rookie had pulled off that feat in the playoffs since Toronto s Frank McCool in Bryzgalov also held the Avs scoreless for the first 19:33 of Game 3, running his shutout streak to 249 minutes, 15 seconds, second all time in NHL playoff history. Dating back to Game 6 against Calgary, the Ducks went on a string of 13 unanswered goals before Colorado s (L-R) Ryan Getzlaf, Chris Kunitz and Teemu Selanne celebrate on the bench as the Ducks upset Calgary in Game 7 of the 2006 Western Conference Quarterfinals. goal in Game 3 ended the string. That Game 3 was notable for another reason, as Joffrey Lupul became the first player in NHL history to score four goals in a playoff game, including the overtime winner. The Ducks 4-3 victory in that game was followed by a 4-1 decision in Game 4, giving the Ducks a convincing sweep. But the Ducks ran into a hot Edmonton team led by goaltender Dwayne Roloson in the conference final. After going down 3-0 in the series, the Ducks did come back with a 6-3 victory at Edmonton s Rexall Place, their first since But Anaheim had no answer for Roloson back at home in Game 5, as he saved 32 of 33 shots in pacing the Oilers to the victory Ducks Advance to First Stanley Cup Final THE DUCKS GOT about as close as they could come to a Stanley Cup title by advanc- 66 DUCKS DIGEST
