Former MSU coach and Athletics Director Ron Mason ranks second all-time in collegiate wins, with 924. Rick Comley ranks fourth all-time with a total of 783. Four players have fathers who played in the National Hockey League: Dean and Jake Chelios father, Chris, played 26 NHL seasons and won Stanley Cups in Montreal and Detroit. He currently is employed by the Detroit Red Wings organization. Sophomore David Bondra and redshirt freshman Brock Krygier - also have NHL fathers - Peter Bondra and Todd Krygier both played for the Washington Capitals and were teammates of now-msu assistant coach Kelly Miller. The elder Bondra played 16 NHL seasons (parts of 14 of them with the Caps) and retired in 2007; Todd Krygier played 12 years, mostly in Washington, with additional stints with Hartford and Anaheim. Michigan State s commitment to giving back to its community is part of the fabric of the school s hockey program. Four times in the last seven years, a Spartan has won the CCHA s Ilitch Humanitarian Award (Drew Miller-2006, Justin Abdelkader-2008, Jeff Lerg-2009, Trevor Nill-2011). Three of those athletes - Nill, MIller, and Lerg were Hockey Humanitarian finalists. Since January of 2008, the Spartan hockey program has raised more than $40,000 for children s cancer charities through Shoot for a Cure, continued their efforts in the Spartan Buddies and Big Brother programs, and took part in more than 50 single-day outreach events in the greater Lansing area. All four current MSU coaches - Anastos, Assistant coaches Kelly Miller and Tom Newton, and goaltender coach Mike Gilmore - played college hockey for Ron Mason. Newton skated for Mason at Bowling Green in the late 1970 s. The other three played for Mason during his MSU tenure - Miller and Anastos were teammates from for the Spartans, while Mike Gilmore graduated in In the final two seasons of his undergraduate career, Gilmore s assistant coaches under Mason were Anastos and Newton. This is also Gilmore s second tour of duty on the MSU staff, as he was the team s volunteer assistant from , while earning his MBA. While he didn t play for Mason at any point in his career, freshman defenseman Travis Walsh is the grandson of MSU s legendary mentor, and the son of the late Shawn Walsh, head coach at Maine from Eleven former MSU skaters, including six in the last seven years, have won the Stanley Cup. Since 2006, Rod Brind Amour (Carolina), Drew Miller and Newell Brown (Anaheim), Justin Abdelkader (Detroit), Duncan Keith (Chicago, twice), and Bob Essensa (Boston) have hoisted the most famous trophy in sports. Mike Donnelly, who holds the NCAA record for goals in a season (59), is a scout for the 2012 NHL Stanley Cup Winner Los Angeles Kings. 5

6 HEAD COACH TOM ANASTOS Third Season Tom Anastos, a Michigan State alumnus who has excelled in the sport of hockey as a player, coach, administrator, and visionary, is in his third season at the helm of the Michigan State Hockey program. Recognized by The Hockey News in five of the past seven years on the list of the 100 most influential and powerful people in the sport (most recently No. 46 in 2011), Anastos has an unrivaled passion for the game and savvy blend of administrative, business and communication skills, a Who s Who list of connections, and has provided progressive vision and dynamic leadership for college hockey. He is currently the chair of the NCAA Hockey Rules Committee. While an outside-the-box hire when announced in March 2011, Anastos quickly set out to return his alma mater to national prominence. He guided the Spartans to a overall record, fifth-place finish in the CCHA, and an at-large NCAA Tournament bid. During Anastos initial season, blueliner Torey Krug won a five awards at the CCHA Awards banquet (matching the record number won by Shawn Horcoff in 2000), and garnered First Team All-America honors in addition to being a Hobey Baker Memorial Award finalist. Anastos resume in hockey saw him both play and coach at his alma mater before stepping into an administrative role as the CCHA Commissioner from He was a four-year letterwinner at Michigan State ( ) for former coach Ron Mason, and received his bachelor s degree in construction management in He was in the first class of Michigan State players to skate exclusively in the CCHA after MSU left the WCHA as he helped the Spartans to three Great Lakes Invitational titles, a regular-season CCHA Championship in 1985, and four consecutive CCHA Tournament titles. His Spartan teams made four NCAA Tournament appearances, finishing fourth in the country in 1984 and losing a heartbreaking quarterfinal series to Providence in As a senior, he earned second-team all-conference honors and was named to the all-tournament teams at the CCHA Tournament and Great Lakes Invitational. The sixth-round pick of Montreal (124th overall) played one season in the Canadiens organization, then joined the coaching staff at the University of Michigan-Dearborn where he served as head coach of that program from , compiling a record. In the fall of 1990, Anastos returned to his alma mater as an assistant coach under Ron Mason. Those two teams went a combined , and in , advanced to the Frozen Four. Prior to his appointment to the CCHA, Anastos was the commissioner of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) for four seasons. In his role as CCHA commissioner, he oversaw the growth and changes in the membership over 13 years, and in April 2010, the CCHA played host to the record-breaking 2010 NCAA Men s Frozen Four at Ford Field in Detroit, the first Frozen Four to be held in a non-traditional hockey venue. In concert with his role of CCHA commissioner, Anastos served as the president of the Hockey Commissioner s Association (HCA). THE TOM ANASTOS RADIO SHOW The Tom Anastos Radio Show takes place on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. live from Reno s East (1310 Abbot Rd., East Lansing).
