Taro Hirose is the first Spartan since Lee Reimer in to have two shorties in a season. Mason Appleton s 18 points (7g, 11a) on the power play are fourth most in the Big Ten His seven power-play goals are the most by a Spartan since Torey Krug also had seven in The power play converted in each of the last five games of January, going 5-for-19 (.263) over the span It was the first time the Spartans recorded a power-play goal in five straight contests since Villiam Haag is the Spartans active career leader in power-play goals with 12. Notes on the Netminders After freshman John Lethemon started the first three games of the month, junior Ed Minney got the call in the regularseason finale last Saturday at Minnesota where he had his best outing since a Jan. 20 shutout at Michigan, making 32 saves in a 1-1 tie and shootout win vs. the Gophers. Minney, who has started 24 games, has a 3.47 goals-against average and.888 save percentage. After not seeing any action in the six games during January, Lethemon made four starts and appeared in six games in February. He started both games at Ohio State in March, marking the first time he has started back-to-back games on a weekend. He yielded three or fewer goals in five of his six appearances in February, including three starts, to post a leaguebest 2.80 goals-against average in the month. All new seating, redesigned special seating platforms, video boards, LED ribbon boards, lighting, ice plant and HVAC system are part of the recent building improvements leading to a broader impending renovation. Anastos resume in hockey saw him both play and coach at his alma mater before stepping into an administrative role as the CCHA Commissioner from He was a four-year letterwinner at Michigan State ( ) for former coach Ron Mason, and received his bachelor s degree in construction management in He was in the first class of Michigan State players to skate exclusively in the CCHA after MSU left the WCHA as he helped the Spartans to three Great Lakes Invitational titles, a regular-season CCHA Championship in 1985, and four consecutive CCHA Tournament titles. His Spartan teams made four NCAA Tournament appearances, finishing fourth in the country in 1984 and losing a heartbreaking quarterfinal series to Providence in As a senior, he earned second-team all-conference honors and was named to the all-tournament teams at the CCHA Tournament and Great Lakes Invitational. The sixth-round pick of Montreal (124th overall) played one season in the Canadiens organization, then joined the coaching staff at the University of Michigan-Dearborn where he served as head coach of that program from , compiling a record. In the fall of 1990, Anastos returned to his alma mater as an assistant coach under Ron Mason for two seasons. Those two teams went a combined , and in , advanced to the Frozen Four. Prior to his appointment to the CCHA, Anastos was the commissioner of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) for four seasons. In his role as CCHA commissioner, he oversaw the growth and changes in the membership over 13 years, and in April 2010, the CCHA played host to the record-breaking 2010 NCAA Men s Frozen Four at Ford Field in Detroit, the first Frozen Four to be held in a non-traditional hockey venue. In concert with his role of CCHA commissioner, Anastos served as the president of the Hockey Commissioner s Association (HCA). He is currently the chair of the NCAA Hockey Rules Committee. 8 Conference Games Overall Pts. GP W L T SW Win% GF-GA GP W L T Win% GF-GA 1. Minnesota Wisconsin Ohio State Penn State Michigan Michigan State Final Regular Season Standings Knudson With His First...And Second! Hard work has paid off for senior Chris Knudson. A defenseman-turned-forward prior to the season, Knudson appeared in his first game of 2017 on Jan. 20 at Michigan where he got his first-career goal - and first-career point - in the second period of the 3-0 win. Three weeks later, Knudson struck again, also against Michigan, scoring midway through the second period on Feb. 10 at Joe Louis Arena. In total Knudson has appeared in 43 career games, including nine this season. Young Blue Liners The Spartan defense corps includes just three returners as five new blueliners have stepped into the fold this season. The Spartans have dressed at least three freshmen defensemen in all 34 games this year and had four in the lineup in several contests. The three returners senior Rhett Holland (138 career GP), Gatt (96 career GP) and sophomore Zach Osburn (71 career GP) all appeared in every game last season and are being counted on to help bring along the younger Spartans. Freshmen Damian Chrcek, Mitch Eliot, Butrus Ghafari and Anthony Scarsella join redshirt freshman Jerad Rosburg on the back end. Eliot has been the only freshman defenseman to have dressed in all 34 games. Tough Travel In playing its first five games of 2017 on the road at Wisconsin (Jan. 6-7), at Penn State (Jan ) and at Michigan (Jan. 20) - the new calendar year has proven to be a challenge for the Spartans in terms of travel as they have spent an extra night away from home in each of their first two trips of In the first series of 2017, the Spartans were forced to stay in Wisconsin an extra night after their return flight to East Lansing following the Saturday, Jan. 7 game had to make an emergency landing in Milwaukee. The team departed in the afternoon the next day after a mechanic and parts were flown in from Dallas to repair the plane. The Spartans were also grounded after the Jan. 14 game at Penn State as they were forced to spend the night in University Park after an ice storm closed the airport. The team eventually departed the following day after noon. The five-game road stretch was the longest conference road trip for a Big Ten team this season and the longest for the Spartans since 2014 when they also played five consecutive league games on the road from Feb March 7. O From Osburn Sophomore defenseman Zach Osburn, who was voted to the Big Ten All-Freshman team last year, leads all Spartan blue liners with 12 points (4g, 8a). Osburn had an unassisted goal that turned out to be the first game-winner of his career in the Spartans 4-1 win at Michigan on Feb. 11. He has been in the top two on the roster in shots on goal this season and currently ranks second with 90. Osburn led all Spartan defensemen and ranked second among Big Ten rookie blueliners with 19 points (6g, 13a) in Roster Odds & Ends The Spartans are the sixth-youngest team in college hockey with an average age of 21 years, 23 days (as of Oct. 1) Patrick Khodorenko, who turned 18 on Oct. 13, is the third-youngest player in college hockey The Spartans are tied for the second most seniors (8) in the nation, but their 10 freshmen are tied for the fourth most Khodorenko is the second Spartan in program history from the state of California (Jeremy Jackson ) and is one of 40 players from the Golden State in college hockey this year Ed Minney (No. 45), Mitch Eliot (No. 52), Jerad Rosburg (No. 57) and Logan Lambdin (No. 71) are the first Spartans in program history to wear their respective numbers. Spartans to Add Four for Head coach Tom Anastos announced on Nov. 15 that Tommy Miller (D West Bloomfield, Mich./USNTDP), Mitch Lewandowski (F Clarkston, Mich./Chicago Steel) and David Keefer (F Brighton, Mich./Des Moines Buccaneers) signed National Letters of Intent to join the Spartans next season. Ty Farmer (D O Fallon, Mo./Youngstown Phantoms), who signed an NLI last year, will also come to East Lansing next year. Miller, who has a B-rating from NHL Central Scouting, is in his second year with the USNTDP, where he has 18 points (3g, 15a) through 50 games this season. Lewandowski is in his second season with the Chicago Steel; he had 18 points (7g, 11a) with the club last season. Keefer is in his third USHL season and put up 33 assists for Des Moines in Farmer is also in his third USHL season. He was limited to just 19 games last season due to injury.
