Six of the Spartans 12 GLI games since 2011 have gone to overtime. Tight Ones With the Huskies Six of the last seven meetings between MSU and Michigan Tech have gone into overtime, including six straight contests from The Spartans went in those six OT games. KHL Line Delivering Offense The Spartans top line of Patrick Khodorenko, Taro Hirose and Mitchell Lewandowski has been nothing short of excellent so far this season. The trio, which has been together since game one, has combined for nearly half of the Spartans total points with 22 goals and 35 assists for 57 points. At least one member of the KHL line has been involved in 17 of the last 21 Spartan goals. The trio is a part of the Spartans top power-play unit where they have combined for 26 points (9g, 17a) on the man-advantage. Hirose and Khodorenko, who ranked second and third, respectively, on the team in points last season have helped Lewandowski flourish into one of the nation s top freshmen. Lewandowski leads all freshmen nationally in goals (10), points (21), power-play goals (5) and game-winning goals (3). Hirose, the Spartans top-returning point producer from last year, is just three points shy of last year s total with 21 (6g, 15a). He has a team-high six multi-point games, which equals his total from last season. Khodorenko, who was linemates in midget hockey with Lewandowski, ranks third on the team in points (15) and is tied for second in goals (6). He tied a career high with two goals the last time out vs. Michigan and has points in six of the last nine games. The native of Northville has improved his save percentage by.045 and lowered his goals-against average by 1.30 over last season. His current.918 save percentage and 2.28 goals-against average both rank third in the Big Ten, while his three shutouts are second best.

5 The Last Time Out Michigan State topped the USNTDP U-18 team in an exhibition game, 3-0, on Dec. 16 at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth... MSU was led by a pair of NTDP alums in sophomore Patrick Khodorenko, who scored twice, and senior goaltender Ed Minney, who made 20 saves... MSU extinguished all seven NTDP power plays while going 2-for-7 on the man-advantage. Of Note From the Michigan Series The Spartans snapped a five-game power-play goal draught by going 3-for-5 in the 5-0 win The three power-play goals were tied for their most in a game this season The 5-0 win was the Spartans first shutout victory over Michigan at Munn since Nov. 14, 2009 The KHL line accounted for eight points (3g, 5a) John Lethemon s shutout was his third of the season. Specialty Notes MSU extinguished 7-of-8 Michigan power plays in its last series and has now killed 21 of the last 24 (87.5%) opponent power plays over the last nine games... Helping the Spartans cause is the fact they rank 58th nationally in penalty minutes per game (8.5) as opponents have had just one power play in four of the last six games... The Spartan power play ranks third in the Big Ten and 21st in the country at 21.4% Taro Hirose leads the country and the Big Ten in power-play assists (11), while his power-play point total (12) also leads the conference Mitchell Lewandowski leads MSU in power-play goals (5), while Cody Milan and Patrick Khodorenko are second (3)... The Spartans started the year with at least one power-play goal in each of the first four games, going 5-for-19 (26.3%). Gatt Leading a Young D Corps As the lone senior in the Spartans lineup for 13 games this season and one of three assistant captains, senior defenseman Carson Gatt s leadership has been essential. Just as important has been Gatt s offensive production as he leads all Spartan defensemen with 11 points (2g, 9a) - one shy of last year s career high. Gatt began the year with points in four of the first five games, while he has seven points (2g, 5a) over the last 10 games. Strong on Home Ice Upon being hired, one of the first program goals cited by head coach Danton Cole was an emphasis on winning at home and making Munn a tough environment for opposing teams. So far so good for the Spartans as they are off to a solid 7-3 start with three shutouts. MSU s power play is operating at 31.6% (12-for-38) at home, which leads the Big Ten. More on Lewy s Hot Start Mitchell Lewandowski has recorded three, four-point weekends - earning Big Ten weekly honors after each. He was named the Big Ten s Second Star of the Week and NCAA Third Star of the Week on Nov. 21 after his four-point (3g, 1a) weekend in a sweep of Ferris State. His other four-point weekends came vs. Western Michigan (3g, 1a) and Wisconsin (3g, 1a). Lewandowski s game-winning goals have come vs. Western Michigan (Oct. 20), LSSU (Oct. 28) and Ferris State (Nov. 18). The native of Clarkston is coming off a three-point game (1g, 2a) vs. Michigan on Dec. 8. Young and Productive With 19 underclassmen, including eight freshmen and 11 sophomores, the Spartans rank as the fourth-youngest team in the nation with an average age of 20 years, 335 days as of Oct. 1. The Spartans have had just one senior skating in the lineup in 12 of the team s 16 games. MSU s 19 underclassmen are tied for the third-most freshmen and sophomores in college hockey. Freshman Mitchell Lewandowski leads all freshmen nationally in points with 21 and as a whole, the freshman class has combined for 28% of the team s total points this season. MSU s three seniors are tied for the fewest in the Big Ten and the fourth fewest in the nation. It s the fewest seniors MSU has had since when it had two. Last season, MSU was the sixth-youngest team in the nation. Note This The Spartans have been able to hold leads, going 6-1 when leading after the first period and when leading after two... The Spartans are 8-1 when scoring first... MSU is 5-1 when generating at least 30 shots on goal, last year MSU was 3-6 when doing so... MSU is 7-1 when scoring at least three goals... The Spartans have allowed two or fewer goals a total of eight times this year, going in such contests; MSU allowed two or fewer goals a total of eight times the entire season... Michigan State hasn t yielded a first period goal in four of its last five and seven of the last nine games. Cradle of NCAA Head Coaches Michigan State has more alums four than any other school coaching NCAA Division I teams in Danton Cole; Jeff Jackson, Notre Dame; Bob Daniels, Ferris State and Damon Whitten, Lake Superior State. Cole and the Spartans have faced each of the three this season, going 4-2. Gatt a Senior CLASS Award Candidate Senior defenseman Carson Gatt is one of 20 NCAA hockey student-athletes nominated for the Senior CLASS Award. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. The 20 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists in February, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. 6 HEAD COACH DANTON COLE First Season at MSU >> Fourth Collegiate Season Overall >> Danton Cole, an 18-year coaching veteran with international, professional and collegiate experience, was appointed head coach of the Michigan State hockey program by MSU Athletics Director Mark Hollis on April 11, Cole, who was a key member of some of the most successful Spartan hockey teams in program history, came to Michigan State from USA Hockey s National Team Development Program where he mentored some of the nation s top young players on the U-17 and U-18 teams for seven seasons. Cole s tenure with USA Hockey was one of consistent success. He guided Team USA to two gold medals (2012, 2014) and one bronze medal (2016) at the International Ice Hockey Federation Men s Under-18 World Championship and three top-three finishes at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge (2011, 2013, 2014), the top events in each age group. His teams also enjoyed success in numerous international tournaments, having captured U17 titles at the Four Nations (2010, 2012) and Vlad Dzurilla (2011) tournaments. While leading the U18s, the U.S. placed first on three occasions in major competitions: twice at the Four Nations (2011, 2015) and once at Five Nations (2014) tournaments. Cole s first taste of international coaching came with the U.S. Under-18 Select Team at the 2009 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup, where he served as assistant coach.
