1 Page 1 of 6-50Plus.com Top 8 pilgrimage destinations for hockey nuts Posted By On November 30, 12:57 pm In Travel No Comments 1) Toronto [1], ON [2] Maple Leaf Gardens [3], cathedral of hockey, closed to league play in 1999 when the Leafs [4] moved to the Air Canada Centre [5]. But CBC [6] now films its show Battle of the Blades [7] here, and while watching a live taping you can glimpse the spot where notorious owner Harold Ballard removed a portrait of the Queen to make room for more paying customers. Just a wrist shot away is the Hockey Hall of Fame [8], repository of many of the game s sacred relics, including the newest showpiece: Sidney Crosby s golden goal puck from the 2010 Winter Games [9]. 2) Montréal [10], QC [11] It s now a mall [12], but the venerable Montréal Forum [13] (shuttered in 1996 when the Canadiens [14] moved to the Bell Centre [15] ) still evokes Habs [16] history. Inside the mall is a little diorama from the original forum seats, logos from centre ice. Outside, you can picture where the Rocket Richard [17] Riot spilled out onto the streets.
2 Page 2 of 6 (Whole dissertations have been written on how that night changed Canada.) Also downtown is the Windsor Hotel [18] the papers were signed in its ballroom to create the National Hockey League [19]. 3) Windsor [20], NS [21] Most hockey historians agree: this is the cradle [22] of the world s coolest game. At Long Pond [23] on the property of legendary prizewinning pumpkin farmer Howard Dill the first game of hurley (precursor to hockey) was played. The old rink s still there, and the local Hockey Heritage Centre tells the story of the game s development. (Side trip: Cole Harbour [24], childhood home of Sid the Kid Crosby [25].) 4) Brantford [26], ON [2] Drive by 42 Varadi Ave. and you might see Walter Gretzky out raking leaves though the old, floodlit backyard rink where he taught his son Wayne to play has passed into hockey lore. If just being there kindles the urge to lace em up, visit the Wayne Gretzky Sports Centre [27]. 5) Vancouver [28], BC [29] In fabled Stanley Park [30] stands a statue of former governor general Lord Stanley [31], arms raised, as if marvelling at a Henrik Sedin [32] pass. But that s only one reason Vancouver s on the radar of every hockey fan. The city hosted the tide-turning game [33] in the 1972 Russia/Canada Summit Series [34], the most famous hockey tournament of all time. And it s home of the Canucks [35], whom CTC humbly predicts will be the next Canadian team to hoist Lord Stanley s Cup. 6) Viking [36], AB [37] Home of the Sutters reads the sign [38] in this peaceful farm town southeast of Edmonton. It commemorates a feat of pluck and DNA unmatched in pro sports: Six Sutter brothers [39] made it to the big league. (Side trip: drive the 134 km (83 mi) to Edmonton [40] and see the No. 99 banner hanging from the rafters in Oilers [41] home Rexall Place [42], and then high-five the Gretzky statue standing outside.)
3 Page 3 of 6 7) Trail [43], BC [29] To hockey fans, the name of this little mining town in British Columbia s gorgeous West Kootenays region [44] means one thing: the Trail Smoke Eaters [45] its players barnstormed their way to the 1939 Ice Hockey World Championships [46] and a place in the annals as the best senior men s hockey team of all time. This is the true spirit of hockey: blue-collar, small-town, character-building, largedreaming. And ageless. Visit the Sports Hall of Memories [47] inside the Trail Memorial Centre [48]. 8) Parry Sound [49], ON [2] Pretty in its own right nestled in the cottage country on the eastern shore of Georgian Bay [50] the town is also the birthplace of hockey s greatest-ever defenseman, Bobby Orr. Visit the Bobby Orr Hall of Fame [51], a museum of Orr-related memorabilia. Obligatory photo: get a friend to snap your photo as you dive through the air, fully laid out, simulating Orr s famous Stanley Cup winning goal [52]. With thanks to Phil Pritchard at the Hockey Hall of Fame for research help.
