NU and Indiana are wrestling the final Big Ten dual of the season as the rest of the conference teams wrapped up their Big Ten schedules Feb Senior Sendoff Friday s dual is Senior Night for Northwestern and the Cats will honor Robert Kellogg (Sioux City, Iowa/Sioux City North), Ben Kuhar (Concord Township, Ohio/St. Edward), Brian Roddy Jr. (Highland Heights, Ohio/St. Edward) and John Schoen (Homer Glen, Ill./Marist) before the match for their contributions to the program over the years. Here are head coach Drew Pariano s comments on the group of four that will be at Welsh- Ryan Arena one last time: Ben Kuhar Ben has been a fixture in our starting lineup since his arrival on campus and has excelled in his academic endeavors during his years at NU. He has the rare distinction of being an All-Academic Big Ten wrestler while attaining a graduate degree in his time at NU. Robert Kellogg Robert is an individual that will do absolutely anything for the team. He has routinely wrestled up a weight class during his career. Robert s dedication to this program is outstanding and his younger teammates certainly look up to his leadership and perseverance. Brian Roddy Jr Brian has won numerous high-pressured matches for our program. During our opening meet this season, his win over his Stanford opponent was electric. The sport of wrestling is brutal on one s body NORTHWESTERN PROBABLE STARTERS Robert Kellogg is one of four seniors that will be honored prior to Friday s match for Senior Night. Penn State Minnesota Illinois Iowa Nebraska Ohio State Michigan Northwestern Purdue Michigan State Indiana Wisconsin standings through 2/12 and Brian has experienced several significant injuries during his time at NU. His effort and contribution to the program will be remembered. John Schoen John has put his mark on this program in many ways. His never-quit attitude is contagious and that is one of the main reasons that his team elected him as their captain at the beginning of the season. John s technique has improved dramatically throughout the course of his career. We are truly excited about his postseason potential. Friday s Promotions There are a number of different promotions for fans at the final regular season dual. Friday is Fan Appreciation Day where the first 75 fans through the door will get a FREE Northwestern t-shirt. It is also the Chipotle Big Match and the first 50 students will receive Chipotle gift cards. Members of Northwestern Dance Marathon will be at Friday s match, raising money for the foundation. Students have the opportunity to participate in a sumo-style wrestling tournament at halftime in order to raise up to $1,500 for Dance Marathon. Last Time Out Northwestern had a successful day in Buies Creek, N.C., last Saturday, defeating two teams from the state of North Carolina to finish the nonconference dual season a perfect 7-0. The Cats started the day with a win over North Carolina and then dominated the host team, Campbell, 32-5 at the John W. Pope Convocation Center. Northwestern now has won four-straight duals and improved to 10-4 on the season. In total, Northwestern won 13 of 20 bouts on the afternoon. Levi Mele (125), Jason Welch (157), Pierce Harger (165), Lee Munster (174) and Mike McMullan (Hwt) all went 2-0 on the day. Both Mele and Jameson Oster recorded pins, while Welch notched tech falls against each of his opponents. Scouting the Hoosiers Indiana is 11-7 on the season, however the Hoosiers are still looking for their first Big Ten dual win, with an 0-7 record in conference action. IU is coming off a sweep of three nonconference foes last Sunday, taking down North Carolina State (31-19), Virginia Military Institute (39-6) and Gardner-Webb (36-6). The Hoosiers are led by senior, No. 3 Matt Powless, at 197, an All-American last season with a 29-3 record so far this year, including an unblemished 6-0 mark in the Big Ten. Powless posted a win in last season s meeting between the two teams, a 29-8 Northwestern victory in Bloomington. Matt Ortega (141) and Ryan LeBlanc (174) have both moved up a weight class since wrestling the Wildcats last year. Dual-ing It Out With their 32-5 win at Campbell Saturday, the Cats have at least 10 dual wins for the secondconsecutive season. NU has an impressive dual record during Drew Pariano s two-year coaching tenure and is 28-6 overall (.824). More impressive than the overall dual record is Northwestern s perfect 19-0 record in nonconference duals during the Pariano era. Last year, NU went 12-0 in nonconference action and wrapped up the nonconference schedule last weekend with a 7-0 record. Welch vs. the Rest Jason Welch has yet to lose a match this year and has not lost since the fifth place match at NCAA s on March 19, 2011 to top-seeded Adam Hall from Boise State. The redshirt junior has just 17 blemishes on his career record at Northwestern. Most of the wrestlers that beat Welch have since graduated, but five of his losses were at the hands of three active Division I wrestlers. Rutgers Scott Winston defeated Welch during his freshman season but Winston has since moved up to 165 lbs. Welch also lost an 8-4 decision to Pittsburgh s Donnie Tasser, who is still at 157, as a redshirt sophomore but then avenged that loss four matches later, winning 5-2 at the Pittsburgh Duals. His three other losses were at the hands of Iowa s Derek St. John during the season. While it is rare for Welch to lose, it is even less frequent that he loses a match by bonus points. Just three of his 17 losses were by bonus points as Indiana s Kurt Kinser pinned Welch in just his fifth match as a freshman. Welch lost his final match of his freshman season by major decision to Hofstra s Johnny Bonilla-Bowman at NCAA s, which was his only loss by major decision. His last loss by bonus points came on Nov. 21, 2010 as then-second ranked Steve Fittery from American pinned Welch in 4:40 in the championship match at the Keystone Classic. All Fall Down Saturday in North Carolina, Northwestern surpassed last year s pin total of 45 and now has 46 falls on the year. It was fitting that junior Levi Mele (125) tied last year s pin total and then freshman Jameson Oster (133) put the Cats over the top as the two have 10 and eight falls, respectively, this year. Mele and Oster have the top two pin totals on the team while Kaleb Friedley (149) is close behind with seven falls. A majority of NU s pins have come quickly as 24 of the 46, or 52.2 percent, are first-period falls. With one dual to go and postseason action in March, Northwestern looks to keep the falls coming. Moving On Up Jason Welch now has a career record, or.815 winning percentage, which moved him past Steve DePetro ( ; ) for sole posession of eighth place on NU s career winning percentage list. A win Friday would tie Welch with current volunteer assistant coach and former three-time NU

3 All-American Brandon Precin for seventh place at.817 (Precin ). The Streak Continues Jason Welch is out to a perfect 20-0 record on the season and his 20-match winning streak is the longest for any NU wrestler this year. Welch has won a majority of his matches in dominating fashion as 14 of his 20 wins (70.0 percent; six major decisions, three tech falls and five pins) have come with bonus points. Welch has now won five-straight matches with bonus points. He has outscored his opponents so far this year (doesn t include point totals in his five bouts won by fall). In fact, the most any opponent has scored on Welch this year is four points, but the three times an opponent scored four on Welch, he won those bouts by major decision. Back on Track After starting the season 16-0 and going 19-2 through Midlands, junior Levi Mele hit a bit of a roadblock in mid-january, losing back-to-back bouts, but NU s 125 lbs. starter is back on track, winning his last six matches. Included in that winning streak is a 13-7 win over then-no. 5 Jesse Delgado from Illinois. Mele has four wins over ranked opponents this year and already has surpassed last year s win total of 18 with a teamleading 25 victories this year. He also leads NU with 10 pins and is second on the team, scoring 54 dual points. NCAA Coaches Panel Rankings NCAA released the second of three coaches panel rankings and the first Rating Percentage Index (RPI) for the wrestling season. The final rankings and RPI will be two of the tools used as part of the selection process to determine the qualifiers for the 2012 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. The coaches rankings are compiled by a vote of coaches across the nation. Each qualifying tournament has five coaches rank the top 33 wrestlers in two weight classes. For ranking purposes, coaches must select a wrestler as a starter at a designated weight class. In addition, coaches may only select one wrestler per weight class. To be eligible for an RPI ranking, a wrestler must have a minimum of 17 Division I matches at a given weight class. The top 33 wrestlers in the RPI are listed for each weight class. The NU wrestlers listed in the RPI rankings are as follows: 125: Levi Mele No : Jameson Oster No : Kaleb Friedley No : Pierce Harger No : Lee Munster No : John Schoen No. 32 Hwt: Mike McMullan No. 13 Sudden Victory Schoen Senior John Schoen had one of the toughest roads to the medal stand at this year s Midlands before placing for the first time in his NU career. 4 The 197-pounder wrestled in three-straight matches that went to sudden victory and a total of four overtime bouts at Midlands, with three of those overtime matches wrestled against ranked opponents. Schoen s first overtime bout came in the championship round against No. 2 seed and 10th-ranked Joe Kennedy from Lehigh. After a 1-1 tie, Kennedy advanced with the winning takedown in sudden victory but Schoen stayed alive in the wrestlebacks, defeating Iowa State s Cole Shafer 3-1 in sudden victory. In his next bout, he met eighth-seeded and 14th-ranked Mario Gonzalez from Illinois and again, scored the winning takedown in SV for the 7-5 win to ensure he placed in the top eight at 197 lbs. Schoen then endured one more extra period in the seventh place match against No. 7 seed and seventhranked Grant Gambrall of Iowa and after another 1-1 tie, Gambrall managed to takedown Schoen in the OT. New Faces Northwestern has a young lineup this year with six freshmen (true or redshirt) seeing dual action so far this year. True freshman Jameson Oster is NU s starter at 133 lbs. while redshirt freshmen Pierce Harger (165), Lee Munster (174) and Mike McMullan (Hwt) are also in the lineup. Redshirt freshmen Colin Shober and Pat Greco have both been in the starting lineup for Northwestern at 141 lbs. Northwestern at Midlands After 49 years of competing in the Ken Kraft Midlands Championships, Northwestern had its best finish in school history in the 2011 edition, placing second out of 43 teams. The Wildcats finished with team points, crowned two new champions and placed three others on the medal stand. Top-seeded Jason Welch won the title at 157 lbs. and as the No. 5 seed at 174 lbs., Lee Munster was the lowest-seeded wrestler to win a title. The last time NU had two champions in the same year was in 2008 when Jake Herbert (184 lbs.) and Brandon Precin (125) both finished first. In the last five years, Northwestern wrestlers have won six Midlands titles at various weight classes. No. 4 Levi Mele wrestled to his seed at 125 When was the last time Northwestern... From Feb , Precin will represent the U.S. on an international tour to wrestle at the Vladimir Semenov International in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia. Precin Qualifies for Olympic Team Trials Volunteer assistant coach and three-time NU All-American Brandon Precin qualified for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials with his second place finish in the men s freestyle 55 kg/121 lbs. division at the Olympic Trials Qualifier in Las Vegas, Nev. The Olympic Team Trials take place April in Iowa City, Iowa, and will determine who wrestles at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, England. Precin recently turned his attention to freestyle after graduating from Northwestern in Last April, he placed first at the 2011 ASICS University Nationals and he wrestled in his first overseas competition back in October, finishing fifth at the Dmitri Korkin Memorial in Russia. During his NU tenure, Precin compiled a overall record to rank third all-time in career wins and was one of only five three-time All-Americans in school history. Wyoming Seminary, two-time North Carolina champion Garrison White ( ) of Concord Jay M. Robinson High and arguably the nation s top recruit, three-time Indiana champion Jason Tsirtsis ( ) of Crown Point High. Ben Sullivan (165) of Apple Valley (Minn.) High is a former Alaska champion. This is Northwestern s second top 10 class in the last three seasons as the 2010 class earned a No. 2 ranking by WIN Magazine and InterMat. Under Pariano s leadership, the 2011 Wildcats posted an 18-2 dual record with a 6-2 Big Ten mark and a final national dual ranking of No. 14. Better still is that Pariano s wrestlers peaked in the postseason as NU qualified five to the NCAA Championships and saw three of them reach All-American status, landing the Cats in a tie for 13th place at the event. Over the course of the 2011 campaign, Northwestern defeated four top-25 opponents and recorded its best Big Ten record since In recognition of his team s accomplishments, Pariano was tabbed college wrestling s Rookie Head Coach of the Year by Amateur Wrestling News following the season. Off the mat, Northwestern has continued to maintain its position as one of the leaders in academic achievement within the college wrestling community. Following the season, Pariano s squad was announced to have compiled the fourth-best multi-year Academic Progress Rating in the nation, and the best in the Big Ten. Throughout his five stellar years as an assistant and associate head coach and into his head coaching career, Pariano has been a driving force in Northwestern regaining its place as one of the top programs in the country. Since arriving on staff at NU, the 2008 NWCA Assistant Coach of the Year has coached 28 NCAA qualifiers, 14 All- Americans, six Big Ten champions and three NCAA champions -- including Hodge Trophy winner and two-time U.S. Open champion and World Team member Jake Herbert.
