6 2005 SEASON RECAP Miami took the field for the first time in 2005 August 28 at home against Monmouth. Setting precedence for season that would rely on youth, the Hurricanes starting lineup against the Hawks featured six newcomers including five true freshmen. The fresh faces would waste little time making a mark as the Hurricanes went on to knock off the Hawks 4-0 behind goals by a trio of true freshman Bryn Heinicke, Meghan McKinsey and Tessa Lennala and junior Rebecca Tweneboah a transfer from Notre Dame. Following a difficult 2-1 loss to Stetson the following match, Miami welcomed in-state rival Florida Atlantic September 2 in the opening match of the Miami Tournament. Led by a pair of goals by freshman Bryn Heinicke, UM downed the Owls 2-1 to improve to 2-1 heading into a match-up with 14-ranked Princeton two days later. Continuing with the youth movement, the Hurricanes once again relied on the efforts of a pair of freshman against the Tigers, a 2004 NCAA College Cup Semifinalists. Scoring three second-half goals, including a pair by Rachael Rigamat, Miami stunned Princeton 3-0 marking the first time UM had defeated a ranked opponent in two years. Coming into the game, we knew Princeton was an extremely talented team," said Taliaferro. "They were very organized and well coached, but we knew we had an opportunity. We were able to take advantage of the opportunities we created and because of our defense, we were able to limit their chances." Riding the momentum of the Princeton victory, Miami headed to Bloomington, Ind. fore a September 9 match-up with tournament host Indiana in the opening match of the 2005 Hoosier Classic. Scoring on a goal by Lennala in the 82nd minute Miami downed the Hoosiers 2-1 to improve 4-1, marking just the fourth time in school history a UM team won four of it s first five matches to start a season. Two days later and for the second time in seven days, the Hurricanes squared off with the No. 14-ranked team in the country in a match-up with Marquette. After battling the Golden Eagles for 97 minutes, sophomore goalkeeper Lauren McAdam, who recorded six saves on Lauren McAdam registered a UM record 13 saves against top-ranked UNC Sept. 25. Bryn Heinicke (13) scored the first goal of the 2005 season in a 4-0 win vs. Monmouth Aug. 28. the afternoon, surrendered a goal in the eighth minute of overtime to fall 1-0. Heading back to south Florida September 14, the Hurricanes played cross-town rival Florida International to a 0-0 tie before heading back to the road for a September 16 match at Auburn. Against the Tigers, freshman forward Paulelett Ricks-Chambers netted the game-winner in the 68th minute to seal a 2-1 win. Two days later, in the final match before the start of ACC play, the Hurricanes fell 2-1 on the road at South Carolina. Miami opened league play September 22 at home against NC State. After battling through 90 minutes of scoreless regulation play, which included a 15-minute span of extremely heavy rain, the Hurricanes and Wolfpack rolled through the first overtime without a goal to move to a second overtime period. In the second overtime, NC State s Carol Tognetti knocked down a corner kick from teammate Lindsay Vera and fired off a shot from in front of the net that was deflected. Tognetti quickly footed her own rebound and got off a shot to score past UM keeper McAdam in the 105th minute to give the Wolfpack the win. "It was unfortunate that we gave up the game-winner off a corner kick because I felt like we did an excellent job defending the corners and throw-ins all night," said Taliaferro afterwards. "It just didn't come to us. We created opportunities, but just couldn't capitalize on those chances. I felt we fought hard all game and our team really battled, but in the end we just didn't finish." With little time to recover from the NC State heartbreaker, Miami welcomed perennial powerhouse North Carolina to Cobb Stadium September 25. Against the top-ranked Tar Heels, McAdam tied the school record for saves in a game with 13 on the day, but the UNC proved to be too much, posting a total of 36 shots - a school record for most shots taken by an opponent against UM - while holding the Hurricanes' offensive attack to just five shots to win 4-0 in front of a crow of 767 fans the second-largest in UM history. UM then suffered a 5-0 loss on the road at Virginia Tech (Sept. 29), a 1-0 heartbreaker at No. 7 Virginia (Oct. 2) and a 2-0 loss at home to No. 8 Boston College (Oct. 6). Looking to snap a six-game slide and searching for their first ACC victory of the year, the Hurricanes hosted Maryland on October 9 at Cobb Stadium. Hungry for a win, UM wasted little time against head coach Tricia Taliaferro s alma mater as junior Kelly Pflugner scored just one minute and 52 seconds into the match. Adding another goal in the 59th minute, the Hurricanes ended the six-match losing streak with a 2-0 win over the Terrapins. Coming off the Maryland win, Miami hit the road for a match at Clemson on October 12. Against the Tigers, Tweneboah netted the game-winning goal in the 104th minute of play giving UM a double-overtime victory. Tweneboah set up the scoring play in the middle of the field, feeding a ball to Lennala on the right side. Lennala played the ball back to Tweneboah in the box to set up the game-winner past Clemson keeper Ashley Phillips at the game's 103:55 mark. With an overall record of 7-8-1, the Hurricanes returned home to face in-state ACC rival Florida State October 16. Unfortunately, UM could not overcome a three-goal deficit as they fell to sixth-ranked FSU 3-1 before a UM school-record crowd of 893 fans at Cobb Stadium. Heinicke netted Miami's lone goal of the afternoon, scoring in the 65th minute, but Hurricanes could not bounce back after allowing a pair of first half goals and a goal early in the second by FSU. Breaking from league play, Miami bounced back with a 2-1 win on the road at UCF two days later to improve to The Hurricanes closed out the season with a pair of losses on the road, falling 3-1 at No. 10 Duke (Oct. 28) and 2-0 at Wake Forest (Oct. 30). In a game originally scheduled to be played Oct. 23 in Coral Gables but was rescheduled and relocated Winston-Salem as a result of the effects of Hurricane Wilma HURRICANE SOCCER
