2 Graig Abel/HHOF Finn O Hara/HHOF Letter from the Vice-Chair Dear Teammates: Not long after another successful Induction Celebration last November, the closely knit hockey community mourned the loss of two of the game s most accomplished and respected individuals in Pat Quinn and Jean Beliveau. I have been privileged to get to know and work with these distinguished gentlemen throughout my life in hockey and like many others I was particularly heartened by the outstanding tributes that spoke volumes to their impact on our great sport. Although Chair of the Board for little more than a year, Pat left his mark on the Hockey Hall of Fame, overseeing the recruitment of new members to the Selection Committee, initiating the first comprehensive selection process review which led to several by-law amendments, and establishing new and renewed partnerships. At its recent meeting to appoint a successor to the Chair, the Board of Directors expressed their appreciation for the many contributions that Pat Quinn made to the Hall including fifteen years as a member of the Selection Committee. Coinciding with this edition of Teammates, I am very pleased to announce, on behalf of the Board of Directors, the appointment of Lanny McDonald as Chair of the Board effective July 1, The appointment is further acknowledgement of Lanny s leadership abilities and his success both on and off the ice which in the confidence of the Board will have a highly positive influence on the Hall s operations. I would like to extend our thanks and best regards to all of our stakeholders/ Teammates. We look forward to some exciting hockey during this year s playoffs and championships at all levels. 9 Library and Archives Canada, a federal Canadian institution tasked with acquiring, preserving and making Canada s documentary heritage accessible, helped fund the Hockey Hall of Fame s new limited-time exhibit titled Hockey Marching As To War, which opened to the public in November 2014 to commemorate the centennial of the start of the First World War. The exhibit pays tribute to those men and women involved in hockey who also served their country. 10 Recent ACQUISITIONS World-Class Legends The 2014 Hockey Hall of Fame Induction Class will go down as having one of the best international representations in history. Canada, Czech Republic, Sweden and the United States were all represented as Rob Blake, Pat Burns (Builder), Bill McCreary (Referee), Dominik Hasek, Peter Forsberg and Mike Modano took their place among the greats of the game. As Hall of Fame representatives did their pre-induction tour to each new Legend s hometown, an unsurpassed international collection began to emerge, along with a plethora of artifacts from minor hockey and professional careers. Some of the more unique items from each player include: Rob Blake 1994 Team Canada World Championship stick (1st gold in 33 years), shoulder pads (worn during entire pro career), minor hockey helmet Pat Burns Montreal Canadiens 1st win plaque, all three miniature Jack Adams Awards (three different teams), 2008 Team Canada World Championship blazer Bill McCreary 1973 St. Catharines Black Hawks jacket, 1974 Windsor Spitfires jacket, 2010 Olympic Gold Medal Game helmet Dominik Hasek 1998 Team Czech Republic Olympic jersey (Gold Medal Game), 1999 Buffalo Sabres Stanley Cup jersey (Game 6 controversial OT goal), personal equipment repair kit Peter Forsberg 1994 Team Sweden Olympic jersey (famed one-handed shootout-winning goal), 1996 Colorado Avalanche Stanley Cup jersey Mike Modano 1989 Team USA World Junior Championship Player-ofthe-Game Award, 1st NHL goal puck, 500th career NHL goal puck Dave Sandford/HHOF Turn of the Century During a lengthy career that saw him work for the famed Hockey Night in Canada broadcast, as well as write countless hockey books, Brian McFarlane collected a large number of items related to the history of the game. Most of the items included memorabilia and photography, but there were also a few key pieces that would catch people s attention. In semi-retirement, McFarlane created and ran the Brian McFarlane Hockey Museum. Originally located in Colborne, Ontario and later moved to Niagara Falls, Ontario, he sold much of the collection to the Municipality of Clarington in One of the oldest pieces in his collection, given to him by the Woltho Family from Cornwall, Ontario to display in his Museum, was a 1902 Stanley Cup goalie stick used by William Billy Nicholson of the Montreal AAA Hockey Club. Montreal challenged the Cup-holding Winnipeg Victorias that March, and Nicholson allowed just two goals in three games, as they upset the champs to win the Stanley Cup. Needing a permanent and safe place for an important piece of hockey history, McFarlane donated the stick in 2014, and it now joins some late Winnipeg Victorias sticks as the oldest Stanley Cup artifacts in our collection. 11 Craig Campbell/HHOF Courtesy of Bernstein Dynasty in the Making? For the second time in three seasons, the Los Angeles Kings captured hockey s ultimate prize, hoisting the Stanley Cup in June 2014 after defeating the New York Rangers. Also for the second time, the Kings management, led by President of Business Operations and HHOF Honoured Member Luc Robitaille, continued the tradition of presenting the Hall of Fame with a championship ring for the collection. On-hand to present Curator Phil Pritchard with the ring were VP & HHOF Honoured Member Rob Blake, Head Coach Darryl Sutter, Captain Dustin Brown and Alternate Captain Anze Kopitar. The Tiffany & Co. ring measures 32mm across the face and features the LA Kings shield comprised of 136 round diamonds amongst pave set black spinels. The top and bottom bezels surrounding the shield read STANLEY CUP CHAMPIONS. The player s name and number are on one shank while an image of the Cup with the team s record is on the other. The 2014 series scores are included inside the ring. Honoured Member Artifacts Received Harold Ballard Illustration Angela James Equipment Percy LeSueur Glass negative Frank Mahovlich - Stick Minor Pro Uniqueness The ECHL and the Hockey Hall of Fame have always had a great partnership that has grown over the years, with the Hall of Fame bringing its Outreach Program most recently to All-Star Games in Colorado and Florida, an Outdoor Game in Ohio and a Heritage Weekend in Alaska. The Hall of Fame prides itself on preserving all aspects of the game, including the minor pro game and its unique marketing. This year, a number of objects from the ECHL found their way to Toronto. In October, the Utah Grizzlies wore a head-totoe Skeleton uniform as part of a special Halloween game. The pictures quickly made the rounds on social media and Patrick Wellar s jersey, pant shell and socks were donated by Grizzlies season ticket holders Dave and Deb Hersom, who purchased them at a charitable auction. Next up was the Batman vs. Riddler game hosted by the Toledo Walleye. Toledo, the home team good guys (Batman), took on the visiting Evansville Icemen (Riddler) wearing some of the most unique jerseys ever worn. One from each team was donated and, of course, Batman won again; 6-5. Next up was a record-setting performance by longtime ECHLer Sam Ftorek of the Kalamazoo Wings. On December 13, 2014, Ftorek played in his 790th career game to set the all-time record. After a brief delay at the border, his jersey, stick, helmet and gloves all found their way to the home of hockey history. Finally, a second stop in Toledo over Christmas saw the first-ever ECHL Outdoor Game take place versus the Kalamazoo Wings as part of Toledo Winterfest with the first-ever goal puck given to HHOF curators on the spot. Already a newsworthy year for the ECHL and the regular season isn t even complete! Scott W. Grau/Toledo Walleye SPRING 2015 TEAMMATES 11
