3 Season Preview 2009 Panthers Soccer The Georgia State Panthers hope 2009 marks their first-ever Colonial Athletic Association championship berth, continuing the positive strides they have taken over the past two seasons. In 2007, the Panthers posted their first winning record since joining the CAA, finishing the year (4-6-1 in conference). The following season, Georgia State exploded out of the gate with a season-opening six-game win streak en route to an 11-9 (4-7 in conference) finish. This season, Georgia State must once again improve as they attempt to move into the national spotlight. Georgia State s road to the CAA championship opens with six consecutive games away from Panthersville. The Panthers open the season on the road at 2008 NCAA tournament team Morehead State (Aug. 22) before taking on North Florida and Jacksonville in a tournament hosted by UNF on Aug. 28 and 30. Next, Georgia State will travel to the Murray State Hampton Inn Classic (Sept. 4-6) where they will meet NCAA tournament team Alabama A&M before getting chance to test their mettle against SEC competition when they visit Georgia (Sept. 11). The Panthers open their home schedule on Sunday, Sept. 13 against Georgia Southern. On Sept. 18, Georgia State will host the school s first-ever night game as South Alabama visits Panthersville. Out of conference we have a nice flavoring of teams from the top conferences in the southern United States, said Georgia State head coach Domenic Martelli. We will get the experience we need, in these early season games, against top competition to get us prepared for the very difficult CAA. Georgia State will wrap up their non-conference schedule by travelling to Macon, Ga., to battle defending Atlantic Sun regular season champion Mercer on Sunday, Sept. 20. During our non-conference schedule, we re on the road quite a bit, said Martelli. These are places and games that we can hopefully use as a foundation to become more united as a team and a program with each individual. Georgia State will open conference play in the difficult Colonial Athletic Association on a Thursday afternoon against Old Dominion before embarking on a three-game road trip against William & Mary, VCU, and James Madison. It s very important for us to get some points out of those games before we return home, playing three of the top four CAA teams from last year, said Martelli. Winning on the road isn t easy in this conference, but it s important in order to make the tournament. During CAA play, the Panthers will face off against three NCAA tournament teams (James Madison, William & Mary, and Northeastern) who each advanced past the first round in 2008, as well as six teams that finished the season ranked regionally by Soccer Buzz (JMU, William & Mary, ODU, Northeastern, Hofstra, and UNCW). James Madison, the defending CAA champion, ended the year ranked No. 18 nationally. The Panthers will return Oct. 9 to begin a four-game homestand over the next two weeks against George Mason, Towson, Northeastern, and Hofstra. The final stretch of Georgia State s season will be a three-game road trip against Delaware, Drexel, and UNC Wilmington before the CAA conference tournament commences on Nov. 3. The last two years we ve played our way into contention up until the last weekend of the season, said Martelli. We hope to be able to do that again this year. To navigate this difficult road to the postseason, Georgia State will rely on the leadership of three seniors: Kari Quinn, Caitlin Smith, and Virginia Wood. After losing a senior class of seven, Martelli feels fortunate to have another solid group of veterans to carry the squad through adversity. Other returning starters include junior forward Apryl Goodwin, junior goalkeeper Heidi Blankenship, and sophomore defenders Bri Cagle and Lani Huntley. Last year we relied on a group of seven seniors. This year, we ll rely on a larger, collective group, said Martelli. I m excited to see who s going to step in and pick up that challenge. FORWARDS At forward, Georgia State will look for continued progress from junior Apryl Goodwin, who finished 2008 with the secondhighest goal total on the team. Goodwin s five goal tally trailed 3

4 Georgia State University Season Preview only senior Kay Harbrueger. After starting 18 of 20 games last season, Goodwin will be expected to lead the Panther offense for the majority of the season. Junior Stephanie Cuccia and sophomore Emily Dover will also be counted on at forward in Cuccia and Dover played in 34 games combined during the 2008 campaign, but Cuccia registered the only start between the two. In 16 of 20 games, Cuccia notched three goals and one assist. Dover deposited two goals during her first season to lead a talented freshman class. Newcomers at forward include Sarah Dashiell, a junior transfer from Young Harris, and freshman Haley Holderfield. Dashiell is coming off of an NJCAA All-American season in 2008 and backto-back NJCAA All-Region mentions. MIDFIELDERS A host of versatile midfielders populate the roster for the Panthers in 2009, many of which will be asked to take on different roles during the season. Senior Caitlin Smith will look for an expanded role after playing in 15 of 20 games in Smith found her playing time in a crowded midfield, dominated by senior talent, last season. Also returning to the midfield are junior Jessica Black, and sophomores Sarah Lucisano, Lindsay Mortellaro, and Erinique Owens. Owens and Mortellaro each scored one goal and registered one assist last season. Black earned playing time in 14 of 20 matches last season. Owens played in all 20 games last season, earning two starts, after opening the season with her first career goal against Tennessee Tech. Mortellaro, who also plays the forward position, managed one start during her freshman year, and scored her first career goal in an important win over conference rival William & Mary. Newcomers to the midfield include Sarah Bennett, Carly Lafferty, Alabama-transfer Taylor Parks, and junior Kaila Muecke, returning to the Panthers after taking a break from soccer in Muecke played in 15 games, starting four, during the 2007 season. Parks transfers to Georgia State as a sophomore who earned playing time in the highly competitive Southeastern conference a year ago. Freshmen Carly Lafferty and Sarah Bennett come from a pair of prestigious high school programs and hope to earn their way onto the pitch in Lafferty comes from St. Pius X, the NSCAA s nationally top-ranked program from Bennett played her high school soccer at Cherry Creek in Colorado, state runners-up in 2007 and state semi-finalists in DEFENDERS Seniors Kari Quinn and Virginia Wood will be expected to lead the Georgia State defense, which features a number of talented youngsters. Wood started in all 20 matches in 2008, while Quinn started 18 of 19. Joining the seniors on the back line will, most likely, be sophomores Lani Huntley and Bri Cagle. Huntley comes off of a monster freshman season which saw her start all 20 matches. Huntley also scored the game-winning goal in a pivotal lateseason contest with Delaware. Cagle started in 11 of 17 matches registering three shots during the season. Vying for playing time at defender will be senior transfer Marshett Clarke, who joins the Panthers from Michigan State, as well as freshmen Megan Geiger, Bridget Gilmore, and Erin Hill. Geiger, Gilmore, and Hill are a trio of Georgia high school products, coming from Parkview, Etowah, and St. Pius X, respectively. GOALKEEPERS Junior Heidi Blankenship will be back in goal for the Panthers in 2009 after a rock-solid 2008 campaign. Entering the season, Blankenship is fifth all-time in goals against average in school history. Blankenship s 77 saves ranked her fifth in the CAA. Kellianne Collins will also look for time in goal for Georgia State after seeing action in nine games for the Panthers in Collins proved to be an asset when she took over starting duties for two games during a Blankenship injury, shutting out Georgia Southern for 99 minutes in a Panther 1-0 overtime victory. 4

24 Georgia State University 2008 Year in Review The 2008 season saw Georgia State women s soccer program take stage on the national level both athletically and academically behind senior captains Kay Harbrueger and Candace Gonzales. Harbrueger positioned herself near the top of the national scoring lists, ranking fifth in the nation in points per game (2.39) and sixth in goals per game (1.0). Candace Gonzales made waves in the academic arena by being named as one of ten finalists for the Lowe s Senior CLASS Award for her scholastic achievements at Georgia State. As the Panthers piled up accolades, the season came to a conclusion with Georgia State narrowly missing out on the school s first-ever CAA Championship berth. Leadership came from a variety of sources on the 2008 squad. An accomplished senior class of seven led the Panthers to the best start in school history (6-0- 0). Seniors Kay Harbrueger, Caroline Harvischak, Candace Gonzales, Karli Klein, Kara Vezza, Jessica Carithers, and Kristen McKillop took Georgia State from the Atlantic Sun to the role of contenders in the Colonial Athletic Association during their careers. The season opened with a dominating performance for Georgia State as they defeated Tennessee Tech 5-1 at Panthersville to begin the season. The opener saw a blend of senior leadership and freshman talent as seniors Kay Harbrueger and Candace Gonzales notched two goals each before freshman Erinique Owens deposited her first career goal to finish off the Golden Eagles. The win also netted senior Kay Harbrueger her first of two CAA Player of the Week awards for the season. The season-opening win over Tennessee Tech paved the way for a pair of 4-0 victories for Georgia State over Jacksonville State and Winthrop the following week, the latter of the pair representing the Panthers first road win of the season. After vanquishing Birmingham-Southern 3-0 in a hard fought game that remained scoreless until the 72nd minute, Georgia State traveled to Jacksonville for the Fun in the Sun tournament at Jacksonville University. In the first of two games in Jacksonville, Kay Harbrueger recorded a hat-trick to down UNC Asheville 5-1. The hat-trick was the eighth in school history and the first time since the feat was accomplished by Amber Collins-Cephers in a 2003 game against Jacksonville. The win pushed the Panthers record to Unfortunately, the record would receive its first blemish in the very next game, a 1-0 double overtime loss to Fairfield. The loss to Fairfield had an additional sting, the game saw Kay Harbrueger and Kara Vezza ejected due to red cards. With the pain of their 1-0 loss to Fairfield still fresh on their minds, Georgia State returned to form with a tough 1-0 overtime win over Georgia Southern without starting senior forwards Harbrueger and Vezza. The win pushed the Panthers to the best start in school history, After dropping a 2-0 decision to Mercer and losing their conference opener 5-0 to #25 Old Dominion, Georgia State made another leap forward with a 2-1 win over conference rival William & Mary. Georgia State head coach Domenic Martelli called the win over the region s seventh ranked team the biggest in program history. The Panthers played heroically on both ends of the field. Trailing 1-0 for most of the game, sophomore goalkeeper Heidi Blankenship kept the Panthers alive with 12 saves on the afternoon. In the 79th minute, senior Kay Harbrueger found freshman Lindsay Mortellaro for her first career goal to tie the game. Nearing overtime, Harbrueger snatched the lead away from the Tribe with a goal of her own in the 82nd minute. After returning to.500 in conference with the win over William & Mary, Georgia State dropped a pair of conference games to VCU and James Madison. Facing a four game road-trip, the Panthers realized time was running short. Georgia State answered the call with a shutout road win over George Mason and a 2-1 double overtime win over Towson. Unfortunately, Georgia State would suffer another setback the following week. Missing Harbrueger for the second time during the season, the Panthers dropped a 3-0 decision to Northeastern, followed by an excruciating 3-4 loss to Hofstra. Against Hofstra, Georgia State battled back from a 2-0 halftime deficit with stellar play from seniors Caroline Harvischak and Kay Harbrueger. Harbrueger found the back of the net twice in the second half, the latter coming in the 80th minute to tie the game 3-3. The Georgia State rally was cut short, however, when Hofstra delivered the knockout blow in the 83rd minute to take the win. 24

25 Year in Review 2009 Panthers Soccer Sitting at 3-5 in conference and 10-8 on the season, Georgia State had to hang tough to secure a CAA Championship berth.the most critical test of the season would come during a home match against Delaware. With heavy rain showers soaking the field at Panthersville, the game would be relocated to the Atlanta Silverbacks artificial turf north of Atlanta. In a wet and wild game, in front of only a handful of diehard fans, the Panthers put on one of their best shows of the year. Kay Harbrueger opened the game with her 18th and final goal of the season only 44 seconds into the match. The Panthers managed to hold off Delaware in the slippery conditions until a goal in the 66th minute tied the score. Knowing that a tie would not suffice, the Panthers launched a tremendous attack down the home stretch, firing away at every opportunity. Senior Candace Gonzales played a ball into Apryl Goodwin, which was deflected out of the box by Delaware defenders. Seeing an opportunity, freshman Lani Huntley streaked up the field from her defender position to rip a shot past the Delaware keeper in the 88th minute, sealing the win for Georgia State. The final two games of the season would leave the Panthers out of the conference tournament, however. Drexel denied Georgia State on senior day with a 2-0 win followed by a 3-0 loss at the hands of UNC Wilmington. Georgia State would finish in a tie for 8th place, one spot out of the tournament. The terrific 2008 campaign netted the Panthers a number of awards and accolades. Kay Harbrueger set the Panther record for game-winning goals in a season (6), finished her career third in career goals, sixth in career assists, third in career points, and was named 2nd team All-CAA. Candace Gonzales enjoyed national attention during the Lowe s Senior CLASS Award voting process. Gonzales was featured on the site for a number of weeks during the national fan vote. Gonzales also made history as Georgia State s first-ever CoSIDA Academic All-District award recipient. Ten Panthers also earned conference all-academic honors (Samatha Bily, Bri Cagle, Jessica Carithers, Kelsey Carl, Kellianne Collins, Stephanie Cuccia, Candace Gonzales, Karli Klein, Kristen McKillop, and Kari Quinn) Women s Soccer Game-By-Game Results Overall: Conference: Home: Away: Neutral: Date Opponent Result Goals Saves Aug. 23 Tennessee Tech 5-1, W Harbrueger (1,2), Gonzales (1,2), Owens (1) Blankenship 1 Aug. 29 Jacksonville State 4-0, W Harbrueger (3), Vezza (1), Goodwin (1), Dover (1) Blankenship 2, Collins 1 Aug. 31 at Winthrop 4-0, W Goodwin (2), Vezza (2), Quinn (1), Harbrueger (4) Blankenship 4, Collins 3 Sept. 5 UNF 3-1, W Goodwin (3), Harbrueger (5, 6) Blankenship 4 Sept. 7 at Birmingham-Southern 3-0, W Harbrueger (7), Dover (2), Cuccia (1) Blankenship 4 Sept. 12 UNC-Asheville^ 5-1, W Harbrueger (8, 9, 10), Harvischak (1), Wright (1) Blankenship 4 Sept. 14 Fairfield^ 1-2 2OT, L Harbrueger (11) Blankenship 5 Sept. 19 at Georgia Southern 1-0 OT, W Goodwin (4) Collins 3 Sept. 21 Mercer 0-2, L N/A Collins 10 Sept. 26 at #25 Old Dominion* 0-5, L N/A Blankenship 1 Sept. 28 William & Mary* 2-1, W Mortellaro (1), Harbrueger (12) Blankenship 12 Oct. 3 VCU* 0-1, L N/A Blankenship 4 Oct. 5 James Madison* 2-4, L Cuccia (2, 3) Blankenship 2, Collins 1 Oct. 10 at George Mason* 3-0, W TEAM (1), Harbrueger (13, 14) Blankenship 4, Collins 2 Oct. 12 at Towson* 2-1 2OT, W Goodwin (5), Harbrueger (15) Blankenship 5 Oct. 17 at Northeastern* 0-3, L N/A Blankenship 7 Oct. 19 at Hofstra* 3-4, L Harvischak (2), Harbrueger (16, 17) Blankenship 8 Oct. 24 Delaware* 2-1, W Harbrueger (18), Huntley (1) Blankenship 5 Oct. 26 Drexel* 0-2, L N/A Blankenship 3 Oct. 30 UNC Wilmington* 0-3, L N/A Blankenship 2 *- Colonial Athletic Association Matches ^- Jacksonville Fun in the Sun Tournament Game-winning goals in BOLD 25

48 Colonial Athletic Association The Colonial Athletic Association celebrates its 25th Anniversary in with memories of a proud and storied past and visions of an exciting future. Regarded as one of the nation s top collegiate conferences, the CAA encompasses five of the nation s nine largest metropolitan areas with a geographic footprint that stretches from Boston to Atlanta. The conference has produced 16 national team champions in fi ve different sports, 33 individual national champions, 12 national players of the year, 12 national coaches of the year and 12 Honda Award winners. Just as impressive, however, are the honors accumulated away from competition, which include fi ve Rhodes Scholars and 20 NCAA post-graduate scholars. In , the CAA had more than 1,700 of the league s 4,000 student-athletes received the Commissioner s Academic Award after posting at least a 3.2 grade point average while lettering in a varsity sport. The conference ranked in the top 10 in the nation in 12 of its 23 sports in the latest APR report released by the NCAA. Member Institutions Delaware Drexel George Mason Georgia State Hofstra James Madison UNC Wilmington Northeastern Old Dominion Towson VCU William & Mary The landscape of the conference stretches along the majority of the East Coast, and includes six of the nation s top 25 media markets New York (1), Philadelphia (4), Boston (7), Atlanta (8), Washington, D.C. (9) and Baltimore (25). The number of television homes in the CAA market exceeds 20 million. The CAA currently sponsors 23 sports with the addition of a 12-team football league in 2007 and women s rowing in Male athletes compete for championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, lacrosse, soccer, swimming & diving, tennis, track & fi eld and wrestling. Female athletes battle for conference titles in basketball, cross country, fi eld hockey, golf, lacrosse, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, tennis, track & fi eld and volleyball. In , 28 teams earned NCAA Tournament berths and 45 student-athletes received All-America honors. CAA squads have combined to win 10 fi eld hockey national titles since the championship began in Delaware and Towson have each reached the Final Four of the NCAA Men s Lacrosse Championship. Three women s soccer teams have reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the past two seasons and at least one men s soccer team has advanced to the fi nal 16 of the NCAA Championship in fi ve of the last seven years. In men s cross country, William & Mary placed 16th nationally as a team in 2008 and Georgia State s Mark Steeds earned All-America status after a 12th-place individual effort. On the mat, ODU s Ryan Williams was one of three wrestling All-Americans after fi nishing as the national runner-up at 141 pounds. The CAA has sent multiple teams to the NCAA Baseball Championship in nine of the last 12 years and has had 12 or more players selected in the last seven Major League Baseball drafts. The conference also boasts numerous All-Americans in tennis, golf, track and fi eld and swimming and diving. CAA member institutions are committed to excellence in the classroom. The Colonial Academic Alliance was created in 2002 by the league s presidents with a goal of expanding their partnership to all aspects of university life outside of intercollegiate athletics. Among the programs already established are an undergraduate research conference, coordination of study abroad programs and granting visiting academic status to student-athletes traveling to an away contest so that they have access to libraries, academic resource centers and computer labs. In 2002, two faculty members from CAA institutions were awarded academia s most coveted distinction the Nobel Prize. John B. Fenn, a research professor in the Department of Chemistry at Virginia Commonwealth University, received the Nobel Prize for chemistry, and Vernon Smith, a professor of economics and law at George Mason University, shared the Nobel Prize in economic sciences. Commissioner Thomas E. Yeager has guided the CAA since its inception. The conference traces its roots back to 1983 when three of its current members- George Mason University, James Madison University, and the College of William and Mary - were aligned with East Carolina University, the United States Naval Academy and the University of Richmond as a basketball league (ECAC South). During the next two years, the league added 11 sports, acquired two new members (the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and American University) and decided to form a new association. The transformation from ECAC South to CAA took place on June 6, Charter members George Mason, James Madison, UNC Wilmington and William and Mary were joined by Old Dominion University in 1991 and by Virginia Commonwealth University in The conference added the University of Delaware, Drexel University, Hofstra University and Towson University in Georgia State University and Northeastern University became members of the conference on July 1, Celebrating its 25th Anniversary, the CAA takes great pride in producing student-athletes who stand out on the playing fi eld and in the classroom. CAA Women s Soccer in Three CAA teams won fi rst round NCAA Tournament matches (James Madison, William & Mary, and Northeastern). - Six CAA teams were ranked regionally in Soccer Buzz s fi nal poll of the season. - Six CAA teams were ranked in the top 75 of the final NCAA RPI. James Madison led the way, ranked 37th. - The CAA placed two or more teams in the NCAA Tournament fi eld for the 14th time in the last 16 seasons. - Four CAA players were selected as All-Americans by the NSCAA. Twelve players were named All-Region.
