4 2007 Season Preview Season Preview The 2007 Georgia State women s soccer program is raising expectations as they enter the 2007 season, the Panthers third in the Colonial Athletic Association. Georgia State returns seven starters from 2006 and 12 total letterwinners. Among those players, the Panthers retained their top-two scorers, four players who started every game and a pair of goalkeepers who combined for seven shutouts. The Panthers will hit the pitch in a combined 20 regular season and exhibition matches in 2007, with nine contests featured on the team s new soccer fi eld at the Panthersville Athletics Complex and one game that will be nationally televised on Fox Soccer Channel. The upcoming schedule, which is certainly one of the toughest in Georgia State Panthers history, features diffi cult contests against Pittsburgh, Alabama Birmingham, who advanced to the NCAA Cup after winning the Conference USA postseason tournament, Winthrop, the Big South regular season champions, in-state foe Georgia and conference foes Old Dominion and William & Mary, who each advanced to the NCAA Cup. Fox Soccer Channel will nationally televise the contest at in-state rival Georgia as the network s Game of the Week on September 20, at 8 p.m.in total, the 2007 schedule includes games against opponents from nine conferences the Atlantic Sun, Big East, Big South, Colonial Athletic Association, Conference USA, Ohio Valley Conference, Southeastern Conference, Southern Conference and Southwestern Athletic and three opponents who advanced to the NCAA Cup. This is going to be a tough schedule, but we re looking forward to the challenges, said Georgia State women s soccer head coach Domenic Martelli, who became State s Junior midfielder Candace Gonzales winningest women s soccer coach in 2006 and has 63 career wins. The team is eager to attack these challenges, excel and take our program to greater success. We feel playing opponents of a high caliber will allow us to become a stronger team and grow into reaching our goals. In 2006, the Panthers learned how close they could come to success without achieving the desired outcome with fi ve one-goal losses in conference play and a tie to James Madison, who advanced to the CAA postseason tournament finals. Georgia State battled to a record, with wins over in-state foes Georgia Southern in Statesboro and Mercer in Macon, where they also defeated Tennessee Tech in the Mercer LQ Cup. In addition, the team defeated back-to-back CAA opponents at home, Delaware and Drexel. However, the Panthers were on the losing end of six onegoal defeats and had three potential victories end as ties. But, the 2007 Panthers squad is eager to prove they have learned from the previous year and can excel in one of the toughest leagues in the country. We were so close in a number of games, but just failed to get the desired result, said Martelli. But, in the past two seasons we have beaten backto-back conference opponents, which proves to me we can compete at this level. Now, we have to assert ourselves and take the next step to become a successful team in one of the toughest soccer conferences in the country. The CAA was ranked 10th among 32 conferences in RPI. Martelli expects greater success in 2007 and his Panthers have lofty goals in mind, as Martelli s team is aiming to advance to the CAA championship tournament, sweep their in-state competition, earn a regional ranking and maintain a 3.0 team grade-point average. All of our goals are attainable for this talented group of student athletes, said Martelli. It s just a matter of working hard enough and having the focus to achieve everything you aim for, and I believe this group can do just that. Martelli s team returns seven starters, plus fi ve additional letterwinners, and will be adding the services of 15 newcomers, including four transfers and 11 freshmen. This immense group of incoming student athletes will provide needed depth to an experienced core of returning athletes. Balance will be a strength of the 2007 Panthers, which as a whole is a young team. However, the skilled and experienced core of returnees will guide Georgia State in 2007 while receiving depth from the newcomers. FORWARDS The Panthers offensive attack will be led by senior Nathalie Carter and junior Kay Harbrueger, who each tied for the Panthers 2006 lead in goals with fi ve. Carter, a creative forward who puts continued pressure on the opposing goalkeeper, fi nished Senior forward Nathalie Carter sprints down the sideline at Panthersville.

5 2007 Season Preview the 2006 season with 35 shots and the highest shot percentage on the team,.143. Harbrueger is likely the fastest Panthers with or without the ball, enabling the speedy athletic forward to excel on the offensive end of the pitch, as she did in 2006 with 48 shots and 12 points, each ranking fi rst on the team. Junior forward/midfi elder Caroline Harvischak should prove to be one of Georgia State s top offensive performers for the Panthers in 2007, her second year with the program. Harvischak appeared in 18 games in 2006 and recorded fi ve shots, and after one year training with State s women s soccer program and performing well during the spring season, she is expected to contribute even more in Newcomers who will likely assist in pushing the attack include incoming junior Kara Vezza, who appeared in 23 games and started 16 for Youngstown State in two years and recorded 31 shots, as well as freshmen Apryl Goodwin and Stephanie Cuccia, who both competed for Houston Challenge, a club team in Texas. All three should have opportunities to compete for starting positions or contribute coming off the bench. MIDFIELDERS Georgia State returns two starters in the midfi eld, juniors Karli Klein and Candace Gonzales, who each started every game in Klein, a defensive specialist, and Gonzales, an offensive threat from the midfi eld who recorded a goal and an assist in 2006, are each expected to start in Sophomores Brittany Bobbitt, who had an outstanding spring season following re- Junior midfielder Karli Klein covery from a season-ending knee injury, and Caitlin Smith, who appeared in 11 games as a freshman and recorded an assist, are expected to increase their productivity in their second year and earn starting positions. Joining Georgia State s returning midfi elders are local Georgia talents Rebecca Babot from Statesboro, Brittany Beresford from Jonesboro, Catherine Cawley from Savannah, Kaila Muecke from Woodstock, Donnalise Nicholson from Morrow and Hannah Secunda from Marietta, in addition to Jessica Black from Walnut, California. This core of freshmen, once acclimated to the college game, will provide tremendous depth to an already strong core of returning midfi elders. DEFENDERS Senior captain Christa Mann battles for the header as Caroline Harvischak (10) looks on. Georgia State s defense, a traditional strength of Martelli s teams, will be led by senior captain Christa Mann and juniors Kristen McKillop and Kari Quinn. Mann, an athletic defender who serves as the center back, guided the Panthers defense to seven shutouts in 2006 and is looking to make the team s defense even stronger. Both McKillop, who started 19 games as a sophomore and was one of the most consistent Panthers on the pitch, and Quinn, who appeared in 14 games, scored a goal and tallied 19 shots, should be crucial pieces to the team s defense, but can also provide offensive support from the back fi eld. These returning defenders will be supported by incoming transfers Khyrstal Richmond, a sophomore from Dallas Baptist, and Jessica Carithers, an incoming junior from Iowa State. These transfers will compete for playing time as outside GOALKEEPERS backs, with freshman Samantha Bily, from Atlanta suburb Lawrenceville, and transfer Virginia Wood, who enrolled early at State after leaving LSU and had a superb spring season, and will also provide key depth to the defense. Martelli is expecting Georgia State s goalkeeping to be improved in 2006 with an additional year of experience for his returning goalies and the addition of a skilled freshman. Senior Megan Macdonald and redshirt junior Charlotte Vargo return to split time again in 2007 after combining for seven shutouts in The duo, along with a departed senior, combined to lead the CAA in saves last season. Incoming freshman Heidi Blankenship will likely garner playing time in goal as a fi rst-year player due to her outstanding athletic ability, size and skill. The 5 9 freshman from Indianapolis is an aggressive keeper who will bring a greater level of competitiveness between the posts in Panthersville. 6 2007 coaching staff 4 Head Coach Domenic Martelli - eighth Season Domenic Martelli returns to guide the Panthers in his eighth year as head coach of the women s soccer program at. He is eager to take the Panthers to new success in his team s third season in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). Martelli has compiled the most wins in Panthers history in his seven years with the program, which he has guided from the Atlantic Sun Conference into the exceptionally competitive CAA. Last year, Georgia State battled to a record while facing one of the toughest schedules in Martelli s tenure, but the team maintained the same 3-8 conference mark they recorded in The Panthers recorded back-to-back CAA wins, against Delaware and Drexel, matching a feat they also accomplished in Martelli s defense was his team s strength in 2006 as the Panthers recorded seven shut outs. In 2005, Georgia State completed its fi rst season in the CAA and fi n- ished with a 9-11 overall record and a 3-8 conference mark. The Panthers found their spark at the end of the season by earning all three of their conference victories in the fi nal fi ve games. Martelli s fi fth season at the helm saw some unexpected turns as his team finished overall and in the Atlantic Sun. The Panthers had to forfeit three of their conference games due to NCAA rules regarding an ineligible player competing with too many yellow cards. Georgia State, who missed the conference tournament for the fi rst time since 1995, would have fi nished with a record of and without the administrative infractions. Under Martelli s guidance, the Panthers extended their home unbeaten streak to 18 consecutive contests and defeated NCAA Soccer Cup participant UCF, 1-0. The team also ended in a double overtime 0-0 tie with Campbell, who was the A-Sun Champion and NCAA Cup participant. Under Martelli s guidance, the women s soccer team had its best season since 1998 as the Panthers fi nished 2003 with a 16-6 overall record and 7-3 mark in Atlantic Sun Conference play. The squad tied the school record for most wins during the regular season and for most regular season shutouts (nine), plus posted its best winning percentage (.727) since Georgia State qualifi ed for its eighth consecutive A-Sun Tournament berth and saw its fi ve-game conference winning streak snapped as the team was defeated by Florida Atlantic in the semifi nals. The Panthers put together a nine-game winning streak during the middle of the season and lost just three matches during their last 15. Martelli s team earned a NCAA RPI ranking of 88, marking the highest ranking of any Georgia State women s team since The Panthers picked up victories against teams in fi ve different conferences in 2003, including Birmingham-Southern and Winthrop (Big South), College of Charleston, Georgia Southern and Western Carolina (Southern), South Alabama (Sun Belt), Alabama A&M (SWAC) and Tennessee Tech (Ohio Valley). In addition, State played three NCAA Tournament qualifiers in Georgia, High Point and UCF, dropping onegoal decisions to all three. In 2002, the Panthers celebrated their fi rst winning season since 1999 as they compiled a overall mark and finished in league play. The fi ve ties marked the most ever by a Georgia State team in one season. Coach Martelli s squad garnered an RPI ranking of 132.

7 During Martelli s second season at the helm, the Panthers won seven of their fi nal 10 contests and knocked off fourth-seeded Jacksonville, 2-1, in the conference tournament as a No. 5 seed. The Panthers fell to eventual champion UCF in the semifi nals. Georgia State fi nished overall and in A-Sun action, plus earned an RPI ranking of 136. In his fi rst season as coach of the Panthers during 2000, Martelli guided the team to an record and a fourth place regular season fi nish in the Atlantic Sun. The season opened with six-straight losses, however Martelli and the Panthers rebounded by winning eight of their fi nal 12 games and claimed a 0-0 tie to with in-state-rival Georgia before falling in the A-Sun semifi nals, 1-0, to Jacksonville. Prior to his arrival at Georgia State, Martelli was an assistant women s coach at the United States Military Academy in West Point, N.Y., from He helped lead the Black Knights to a Patriot League championship, four top-10 regional rankings, two ECAC post-season tournament berths and an record. During his seven-year tenure, Martelli coached one NSCAA Second Team All-American and seven NSCAA East Regional All-Americans. Although State is Martelli s fi rst stint as a collegiate head coach, he certainly is not new to success as a head coach. In addition to his time at West Point, he spent four years as the head coach of the Eastern New York Olympic Development Program where he led both the under-14 and under-16 teams to the Women s East Regional semifi - nals. He spent as the head coach and trainer for the Newburgh Storm club team and led the squad to the fi nals of the under-17 Boys New York State Cup in 1995 and won the championship in 1996 before guiding them to the USYSA Regional semifi nals. In 1990 and 1991, Martelli joined his father, Tony, a former assistant coach on Army s men s soccer staff, in coaching the Hudson Valley Boys Scholastic Team in the Empire State Games. Martelli has also coached several club teams that have competed on the local, state and national levels. As a senior at Ohio State University, he launched his coaching career as the head coach of the Buckeyes women s soccer club program. Since moving to Georgia, Coach Martelli is a member of the Region 3 Olympic Development Program staff and is a six-year state team head coach for the Georgia Soccer State Olympic Development Program. Martelli guided the 85 Girls Georgia ODP team to the Region 3 ODP championship, where it qualifi ed for the National USYSA Championships in the spring of 2003 and fi nished third. During the summer of 2005, Coach Martelli helped lead the women s Georgia Amateur State Team at the Region 3 national qualifying tournament in Huntsville, Ala., to a second place fi nish. Saint Mary s College in Newburgh, N.Y., in In addition to his coaching duties, Martelli spent fi ve years as an instructor in West Point s Center for Enhanced Performance. He taught the Student Success Course to the freshmen cadets and worked with groups and individuals training them in sports psychology skills. I come from an excellent academic institution in West Point and doing well in school is of primary importance to me, commented Martelli on the education of his student-athletes. I know Georgia State University commits itself to the development of its students by offering a quality education and encouraging each student to develop according to their own interests and abilities. This is what can help move people through their lives and I totally support this process. Martelli s team had 15 players in the fall of 2005 and 14 in the spring of 2006 post a 3.0 GPA or better. Seven players from last year s team also earned the CAA Commissioner s Academic Award. 10 Director of Athletics Mary McElroy - Third Year Director of Athletics 8 Mary McElroy became Director of Athletics at in July Her tenure so far has been very productive, yielding many significant accomplishments. In August 2006, the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators (NACWAA) named McElroy as the NCAA Division I-AAA Administrator of the Year. McElroy has brought tremendous energy, optimism, and a tireless work ethic to her position helping the Athletic Department make a smooth transition from the Atlantic Sun Conference to the Colonial Athletic Association. The former Marine Corps Captain, 1987 graduate of the Naval Academy and 2000 graduate of Georgia Tech s MBA program, has the athletic department poised for progress and consistent achievements. One of her major accomplishments was to develop and implement the Strategic Plan that established the athletic department s vision and defined the pathways to those objectives. McElroy further mandated the development of the department s Policies and Procedures Manual which outlines operational procedures to keep the department functioning efficiently. Her first year saw record development for financial support. Just under one million dollars was raised and earmarked for scholarship endowments, while maintaining support for the operating budget that increased due to broader travel requirements within the CAA. The facility upgrades have seen improved locker and training rooms in the Sports Arena, with new arena signage, a videoboard, and a more fan-friendly atmosphere taking shape all over the department to enhance the gameday experience. A $5 million, two-phase plan for the development of the Panthersville Athletics Complex is underway and will result in a new practice soccer field, a soccer stadium, new tennis courts, and locker room facilities. Phase I was completed in Fall 2006 and Phase II will be complete in December Upgrades are ongoing for the softball and baseball facilities already located in Panthersville which will now be the home for all of Georgia State s outdoor athletic teams except track and field. In response to a directive from President Patton and as a result of interest expressed by some alumni, staff and students, a feasibility study to effectively gauge the serious interest and financial obligations of adding football at Georgia State was completed and is now being discussed across Atlanta. Under McElroy s leadership, the department has been able to fund assistant coaches for designated sports and to add to the undersized athletic department staff as the goals have increased. She also negotiated a department-wide apparel agreement with adidas, established a new partnership with XOS Technologies, Inc. to host the athletic department s homepage on the Internet and with ISP Sports to increase revenue from sponsorships. The program is working within the framework of NCAA guidelines and maintaining compliance standards to bring credit to the institution. The 225-plus student-athletes are challenged to maintain the highest grades possible and responded by maintaining a recordsetting 2.93 GPA at the conclusion of the Fall 2006 and Spring 2007 semesters. With regards to the Academic Progress Rate established by the NCAA, Georgia State has had no teams penalized, two teams with perfect scores, and four teams with APR scores in the top 10% in the nation. In the competition on the fields, courts, courses, and tracks, the student-athletes responded against the tougher level of play as well, achieving very respectable winning percentages across the 15 teams. The vision of being the student-athlete s first choice is being realized as the recognition of the University s stature and the CAA level of respect rise. McElroy s athletic management career began in 1992 where she worked her way up to assis- tant athletic director at the Naval Academy. She was Senior Woman Administrator and oversaw compliance for 29 sports. She also served a stint as Director of Alumni Services at Navy. From June 1999 to July 2005, McElroy served on the athletic management team at Georgia Tech. She left as Senior Associate AD and Senior Woman Administrator. During her tenure at Tech, her responsibilities included overseeing the compliance staff, five sports: basketball (men s and women s), tennis (men s and women s) and softball, and supervising the game day operations for basketball and assisting with football gameday. Within the NCAA and ACC, McElroy was appointed to the NCAA Management Council in April 2005, and was a member of the NCAA Volleyball Committee. For the ACC, McElroy served on several committees, was chairperson of the Softball Committee, was on the Women s Basketball Committee, the Head Trainer s Committee, the Senior Woman Administrator s Committee, and an Ad Hoc Committee on student-athlete welfare. As a member of the CAA, McElroy was reappointed to the Management Council in October 2006 and was elected in October 2006 to serve on the Board of Directors for the NACWAA. She chairs the CAA Awards Committee and serves on the CAA Executive Committee. When the NCAA Women s Final Four was played in Atlanta in 2003, McElroy was the tournament manager. She was also on the Atlanta Local Organizing Committee for the Men s Final Four in Atlanta in 2002 and again in As a student at the Naval Academy, McElroy played varsity basketball in the Colonial Athletic Association. She was a captain of the club softball team and still stays active athletically in local Atlanta softball leagues. A native of Great Mills, Md., she is married to a fellow Naval Academy graduate, Terry ( 86), and they have two sons, Darrin (17) and Austin (14).

28 2006 Season in Review Women s Soccer Season in Review The women s soccer team continued its transition and learning experience in their second season in the Colonial Athletic Association in With only one year under their belt in one of the toughest soccer conferences in the country (10th of 32), the team entered the season eager to gain respect in the CAA. The Panthers did just that by finishing ahead of the prediction of the conference coaches, posting backto-back conference wins for the second time and playing tenacious defense. This was one of the best teams I ve had, said Georgia State head coach Domenic Martelli. The work ethic and effort were better than any previous team. We just didn t get some of the breaks we needed in four or five games to have a really good record. The 2006 Georgia State women s soccer team (5-12-3, 2-8-1) had success early in the season when they swept their competition at the Mercer LQ Cup hosted by Mercer University in Macon in September. The Panthers defeated Tennessee Tech (1-0) and Mercer (2-0) in the two-day competition and three different Panthers scored goals. The Mercer victory also presented an additional highlight for the 2006 season, as coach Martelli became the winningest coach in Georgia State women s soccer history with his 59th career victory. It was my goal to average 10 wins a year at State and I m just below that, said Martelli. We ve played some tough teams and accomplished a lot, but the next 60 will have a lot more meaning, he said alluding to the strength of the CAA and State s recent schedules. In addition to defeating Mercer, the Panthers later topped a second in-state rival in September, downing Georgia Southern, 1-0. Two of the Panthers best offensive weapons from the 2006 season combined on the game-winning goal when junior forward Nathalie Carter crossed the ball from the left wing to sophomore Kay Harbrueger, who placed the ball in the back of the net. The Panthers dropped two close decisions to regionally-ranked opponents in their second tournament of the year, the N.C. State/ Summit Hospitality Senior captain Christa Mann fights to protect the Panthers goal. club. Invitational. Despite the tough losses, two individuals were rewarded for their efforts when Carter and junior captain Christa Mann were named to the All- Tournament team. Carter scored three goals in the tournament on five shots. She scored the first goal in State s contest against East Carolina, who at the time was ranked 14th in the Southeast Region by Soccerbuzz.com, to give the Panthers an early lead and later scored in the second half of the game to tie the contest. She scored her third goal in State s second game against N.C. State. Mann, a defender, provided leadership and guided the backs to two strong showings against the ranked foes. The Panthers remained within one mark of N.C. State until the final 10 minutes when the Wolfpack claimed a two-goal advantage and the defense kept the Panthers fighting until the end when they dropped a one-goal decision to East Carolina. The Panthers held James Madison, who advanced to the finals of the CAA Tournament, to a 0-0 tie in the team s first CAA match of the year by using outstanding defense to slow a talented Georgia State also recorded back-toback home wins against conference foes when the team defeated Drexel and Delaware late in the season. This marked the second time Georgia State recorded back-to-back conference wins after defeating Hofstra and George Mason in 2005 in Atlanta. The Panthers hosted their first rankedopponent in the Martelli era when CAA foe and national power William & Mary, ranked 16th, visited Panthersville late in the season. The Panthers fought valiantly, but dropped the match 0-3, leaving the team s postseason hopes with a faint pulse. The team dropped their next decision, 0-1, at Old Dominion, who went and made the NCAA postseason tournament. The loss eroded any remaining CAA tournament aspirations in a conference where only half the teams six of 12 make the postseason tournament. But, despite the tough end to the season, the Panthers stayed true to their form and battled tough until the end of the season. The Panthers used defense, a traditional strength of Georgia State, to stifle opponents in 2006 and the team

29 Women s Soccer Season in Review recorded seven shutouts. Goalkeepers Charlotte Vargo and Megan McDonald split a majority of the time in goal preserving the shut outs, along with senior goalie Sharron Jasson, and together led the conference in saves. The defensive unit was led by three seniors Rebeccah Bernard, Tiffany Blackmon and Rosie O Toole who combined to give the Panthers 40 starts in the backfield this season. On offense, the team will lose three prolific athletes in Lauren Chavez, Tenisha Cohen and Amber-Collins Cephers. Cohen, who recorded six assists in her career, often led Cephers and Cahvez, who rank tied for fourth and fifth respectively in career goals, towards the net. Chavez ended her career ranked sixth all time in assists for the Panthers (17) and Cephers ranks in the top ten in career matches played and started for State. Each also ranks in the top ten in total points and game-winning goals. A trio of sophomores midfielders Candace Gonzales and Karli Klein and defender Kristen McKillop contributed significantly to the 2006 squad and combined to start 59 matches. As a team, Georgia State ranked fifth in the CAA in corner kicks and fourth in corner-kicks-per-game, with 4.2. The team played 10 matches with teams ranked in the top 100 and 14 against teams in the top 150. According to Martelli, the team s schedule (ranked 116th) was the most difficult in any of his seven years as a head coach Women s Soccer Game Results Graduated forward Lauren Chavez dribbles the ball. The former Panther ranks sixth in career goals, assists and total points. 38 The Colonial Athletic Association The Colonial Athletic Association Commissioner Tom Yeager Coming off another record-setting season, the Colonial Athletic Association continues to enhance its reputation as one of the nation s top collegiate conferences. With a geographic footprint stretching from Boston to Atlanta, the CAA encompasses five of the nation s nine largest metropolitan areas. The conference has produced 16 national team champions in five different sports, 33 individual national champions, 12 national players of the year, 11 national coaches of the year and 12 Honda Award winners. Even more impressive, however, are the honors accumulated away from competition, which include five Rhodes Scholars and 21 NCAA post-graduate scholars. In , the CAA had six ESPN the Magazine Academic All-Americans and more than 1,600 of our 4,000 student-athletes received the Commissioner s Academic Award after posting at least a 3.2 grade point average while lettering in a varsity sport. The landscape of the conference stretches along the majority of the East Coast, and includes six of the nation s top 25 media markets New York (1), Philadelphia (4), Boston (5), Washington, D.C. (8), Atlanta (9) and Baltimore (23). The number of television homes in the CAA market exceeds 19 million. The CAA now sponsors 22 sports with the addition of a 12-team football league in Male athletes compete for championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, lacrosse, soccer, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field and wrestling. Female athletes battle for conference titles in basketball, cross country, field hockey, golf, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field and volleyball. In , a league-record 29 teams earned NCAA Tournament berths. The conference has made its presence known nationally in men s basketball with four teams advancing to post-season play for the past three years. Conference champion VCU pulled the most noted upset of the NCAA first round last season with its victory over Duke and Old Dominion became the second CAA team in as many years to receive an NCAA at-large bid. Hofstra returned to the NIT for the third straight season and Drexel made its fourth NIT appearance in the last five years. In 2006, George Mason became the first mid-major program since 1979 to reach the Final Four, knocking off powerhouses Michigan State, North Carolina, Wichita State and Connecticut along the way. The Patriots were ranked No. 8 in the final ESPN/USA Today Top 25 poll, which was the highest ever for a CAA team. In women s basketball, the CAA had three teams earn NCAA Tournament berths for the first time and four squads advanced to postseason play for the second straight year. Perennial power Old Dominion, which has captured three national championships (1979, 1980, 1985) and was national runner-up in 1997, captured its 16th consecutive conference title. James Madison returned to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1996 and Delaware made its second-ever trip to the NCAA s. Hofstra completed its most successful season in school history by advancing to the quarterfinals of the WNIT. The conference also excels in many other sports. Delaware became the first CAA team to reach the Final Four of the NCAA Men s Lacrosse Championship in A league-record four men s soccer teams earned NCAA berths in 2006, with Towson and Old Dominion advancing to the round of 16. A league-high four teams also represented the conference in the NCAA Men s Tennis Championship. William & Mary reached the round of 16 in women s tennis and the Tribe tandem of Megan Moulton-Levy and Katarina Zoricic was ranked No. 1 in the nation and reached the finals of the NCAA Doubles Championship. CAA squads have won 10 field hockey national titles since the championship began in 1981, which is the most of any Division I conference. Hofstra finished seventh overall at the NCAA Wrestling Championship and William & Mary finished eighth nationally in men s cross country. In baseball, the league had 17 players chosen in the 2007 Major League Baseball draft. There were 37 CAA student-athletes who received All-America honors. CAA member institutions are committed to excellence in the classroom. The Colonial Academic Alliance was created in 2002 by the league s presidents with a goal of expanding their partnership to all aspects of university life outside of intercollegiate athletics. Among the programs already established are an undergraduate research conference, coordination of study abroad programs and granting visiting academic status to student-athletes traveling to an away contest so that they have access to libraries, academic resource centers and computer labs. In 2002, two faculty members from CAA institutions were awarded academia s most coveted distinction the Nobel Prize. John B. Fenn, a research professor in the Department of Chemistry at Virginia Commonwealth University, received the Nobel Prize for chemistry, and Vernon Smith, a professor of economics and law at George Mason University, shared the Nobel Prize in economic sciences. Commissioner Thomas E. Yeager has guided the CAA since its inception. The conference traces its roots back to 1983 when three of its current members - George Mason University, James Madison University, and the College of William and Mary - were aligned with East Carolina University, the United States Naval Academy and the University of Richmond as a basketball league (ECAC South). During the next two years, the league added 11 sports, acquired two new members (the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and American University) and decided to form a new association. The transformation from ECAC South to CAA took place on June 6, Charter members George Mason, James Madison, UNC Wilmington and William and Mary were joined by Old Dominion University in 1991 and by Virginia Commonwealth University in The conference added the University of Delaware, Drexel University, Hofstra University and Towson University in and Northeastern University became members of the conference on July 1, From all-star athletes to Nobel Prize winning faculty, the CAA takes great pride in producing performers who stand out both on the playing field and in the classroom. 41 2007 Athletic Facilities has several fi ne athletic facilities that its student-athletes call home. While men s and women s basketball and women s volleyball compete at the Georgia State Sports Arena in downtown Atlanta, most of the Panthers athletic teams host their competitions at the Panthersville Recreation and Athletics Complex, located about 10 miles from campus in DeKalb County. The complex includes the home facilities for the sports of men s and women s soccer, baseball, softball, and men s and women s cross country. A new building was erected for the baseball team that serves as a dressing room for the players and coaches. The Reeves Fieldhouse, offi cially dedicated in March 2003, also includes offi ce space for coaches. A second building for concessions and public restrooms as well as a renovated press box was opened in spring The softball area has also undergone some major improvements in the past few years. In April 2003, the Robert E. Heck Teamhouse was dedicated in the name of the Panthers longtime head coach who has eclipsed the prestigious 550-win plateau for his career. The teamhouse serves as an indoor practice facility for the Panthers softball team and includes batting cages, a weight room and a game room. The cross country courses at Panthersville, on the grounds of the Georgia Regional Hospital, are some of the best in the Southeast. The Georgia State programs have hosted several 5000-, and 10,000-meter meets over the years, including many conference and regional championships. Eagle s Landing Country Club, just south of Atlanta in Stockbridge, Ga., serves as an impressive home course for the Panthers golf teams. The home for the Georgia State men s and women s tennis squads is at nearby Piedmont Park Tennis Center. This 12-court lighted complex sits in the shadows of Atlanta s Midtown district. Most recently, an ambitious long-term development project took place on Wednesday, June 28, 2006 with an offi cial ground breaking ceremony for the new Panthersville Athletics Complex. The focus of the project is to bring most of Georgia State s outdoor athletic programs into one full-use facility. The multi-year project will include two soccer fields, a tennis complex complete with six outdoor courts and four indoor courts and a new locker room facility. Parking lots, walking areas and lighting will also be added to enhance the newly developed athletic complex. Panthersville, and the Panthersville Athletic Complex, is located in an area of town in DeKalb County near the intersection of I-20 east and I-285, The Georgia State Sports Arena with a capacity crowd. 42 Georgia State Continues CAA Success Georgia State Athletics Continues CAA Success Georgia State has 16 teams for its student-athletes to compete at the NCAA s highest level. After a 21-year relationship with the Atlantic Sun Conference (formerly the Trans America Athletic Conference), the Panthers made a dramatic move to the Colonial Athletic Association for the season - one year earlier than planned. Under the guidance of second-year Director of Athletics Mary McElroy, a former NCAA student-athlete herself, Georgia State is making huge strides in its new league, capturing three league championships and battling for others in several sports. Over the past nine years, Georgia State has accumulated 23 conference championships, 24 NCAA bids, 20 conference Coaches of the Year, 15 conference Players of the Year and eight All-Americans. Last year, State s student-athletes hit the books hard as well with 106 earning the CAA Commissioner s Academic Award and two earning ESPN The Magazine Academic all-district recognition. The season also saw State s teams combine for 45 all-conference picks. Volleyball led things off in the fall. The Panthers remained in contention for a CAA postseason tournament berth and finished tied for seventh at the conclusion of the regular season. Men s and women s cross country finished Caitlin Price was an All-CAA selection and the league s Rookie of the Year. fourth and second, respectively, in their league championship meets, while the soccer teams posted big conference wins in their second seasons. Women s cross country head coach Jessica Raby was named CAA Coach of the Year. The basketball teams battled well during the winter in one of the most competitive leagues in the country as the CAA s men s RPI ranked eighth nationally out of 32 conferences and the women s was ninth out of 31. The men s team won its second straight fi rst-round league championship contests in upset fashion on a play that was No. 1 on SportsCenter s Top Plays. Early in the season, Panthers head coach Lea Henry notched her 200th victory as mentor of the women s team and senior Kelcey Roegiers-Jensen was named female Student-Athlete of the Year. Highlighting the spring season were the accomplishments of the men s golf and men s tennis programs as both advanced to the NCAA Championships. Golf made the NCAA Championships for the third time in four years and fi nished 17th out of the 30-team fi eld. Jean-Michel Rochon-Salvas was an Academic all-district selection and the CAA baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Men s tennis earned its first CAA championship and fourth NCAA bid. The squad earned their seventh trip in the past eight years to NCAA postseason competition. Junior Joel Sjoholm was named CAA Golfer of the Year and State s male Student-Athlete of the Year. He earned third-team All-America honors, becoming only the second golfer in history be named to a team. Tennis captured its fi rst CAA crown (the first league No. 4 seed to do so) and an automatic NCAA bid. The title was the sixth overall league championship for men s tennis and the fi rst since Senior Martin Stiegwardt became the fi rst tennis player, male or female, to earn a bid to the NCAA Championships as a singles competitor. Women s golf won a team title for the sixth straight season and fi nished as runners-up at the league championships. Women s tennis saw three players record 20+ win seasons as the Panthers won a CAA Tournament game for the fi rst time in advancing to the league semifi nals. Georgia State s softball team won six of its last nine games en route to a third-place regular season conference finish. The Martin Stiegwardt became the first tennis player to advance to the NCAA Singles Championships. Panthers played through the tournament to the league championship game for the second straight season. Baseball, which fi elded the CAA s fifth-best squad, settled in as the No. 6 seed in the conference championships, earning a record third-straight postseason appearance. The track and field teams had a record 13 multiple entrants earn NCAA Region bids for their efforts. The women placed third, while the men were eighth at the CAA Championships. Senior Denisha Bryant was a two-time CAA champion. State s 4x100m and 4x400m) were also champions at the CAA meet.

43 2007 Panther Promise has built an academic support program comparable to any NCAA Division I institution in the nation. In 2005, Associate Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Development and Senior Woman Administrator Carol Cohen, in conjunction with Director of Athletics Mary McElroy, have developed a blueprint for success for Georgia State student-athletes in the classroom. That blueprint is called the Panther Promise. Panther Promise was developed in 2005 as a growth of services provided by P.A.S.S. (Program for Academic Support Services). Panther Promise was created to assist student-athletes with concerns that are unique to the Division I student-athlete and tailored to fit the unique urban environment of the downtown Atlanta university. is committed to providing educational, personal, and community development opportunities that will enhance the quality of our student-athlete s university experience. To this end, Cohen set specifi c objectives and standards to make the program successful. Joined by Assistant Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Development, Dena Freeman-Patton, and two Academic Advisors, Georgia State student-athletes succeeded in posting the highest-ever cumulative grade-point average (GPA) in the school s history following the 2006 Fall term, a mark equalled by the 2007 Spring student-athletes. Steadily increasing graduation rates over the years also indicate the concept is reaching its goals and potential. The graduation rate for the student-athletes is consistently much higher than the graduation rate of all State students. More than 90 percent of all studentathletes who have been through this program and exhausted their eligibility have graduated from the University. The average time for a busy student-athlete to graduate is 5.10 years, lower than the 5.32 rate by the average Georgia State student. State coaches and student-athletes believe in this program. Its success first showed in 1994 when the fi rst four-year seniors in the program were fi nishing their careers. At that time, State was recognized for having the highest graduation rate and making the most improvement of any of the state colleges and universities throughout Georgia. The Panther Promise objectives have continued to grow since Cohen set up the original P.A.S.S. plan in In order to accomplish its goals, the Panther Promise includes the following programs and activities: P.A.S.S. includes annual New Student- Athlete Orientation, key Learning Lab sessions, Tutorial Assistance, the Bridge Seminar Course, Mandatory Advisement, Academic Monitoring and Fifth- Year Grant-in-Aid to allow student-athletes a chance to continue their work toward a degree after their athletic eligibility has expired. CHAMPS/Life Skills is a unique NCAA program of educational opportunities that adds value, knowledge and growth to the demanding lives of our student-athletes. It is a comprehensive program that will provide educational, personal, community, and career development to enhance the overall quality of our student-athletes university experience. A learning lab for student-athletes, located on the first floor of the Sports Arena, opened in the fall of Panther DEN offers a variety of services dedicated entirely to addressing the unique challenges that face the Georgia State University student-athlete. These services are offered in conjunction with the Life Skills and Stress Management Offi ce of the University s Counseling Center. Panther Promise provides these services to aid the student-athlete in their personal life as well as enhance their athletic potential. Academic Support Services 41 It s all still aimed at instilling crucial focus on academics at Georgia State. Our student-athletes are encouraged and supported to be successful in the classroom. With approximately 225 student-athletes in the program at any one time, it s a continual process to guarantee their success. Carol Cohen, Associate AD for Student-Athlete Development
