WHITEHORSE TRIP MIDGET A2 BLUES TRAVEL TO THE YUKON Article courtesy of the Yukon News Tom Patrick Excerpts from Yukon News Article 3rd Year in a Row: Hockey aside, the Richmond Blues will likely remember their road trip to the Yukon a long time. For the third year in a row, the midget Blues came to Whitehorse for a few exhibition games against the Whitehorse midget Mustangs as the teams prepare for the BC Provincials Yukon Experience: The Blues spent the day soaking in the Yukon experience, trying their hand at dogsledding and then spending some time tobogganing. We went out at 11 this morning and didn t get back until six this even, said Blues coach Max Madrussan. So by the time we got back there were some really tired legs and some pretty tired kids. They were struggling to keep up. They were having fun enjoying the Yukon experience, so I don t think they were at 100 per cent, said Mustangs Riley Tobin. This game I think we moved the puck better and faster, and we got more shots on net. Including Friday s 6-2 win for the Mustangs, the first two games were played on the Canada Games Centre s Olympic-sized rink, which, according to Madrussan, caused his team some problems. We play on NHL ice or smaller, said Madrussan. All the plays that we normally do, do not involve such a big sheet It s a lot more ice to cover. Madrussan s observation seemed to ring true Sunday as the teams took the Both of our goaltenders, Steven and Brad (Gustofson), they re Mustang Jaxon Glass attempts a backhander on the Richmond Blues goaltender Tyson Leblanc at the Canada Games Centre on Friday. The Mustangs won 6-2. both amazing, said Tobin. Whenever we re in a close game, we know we can count on them they re always stopping shots. (On Friday) Steven Harlow faced 41 and let in two. With goaltending like that and it s hard to lose. The series marks the last non-league games for both teams before heading to Squamish, BC for the provincials. The people here and the hospitality has been unbelievable, said Madrussan. The Mustangs team have been the best hosts any team could ask for. Full article-

WHITEHORSE TRIP EXPERIENCE OF A LIFETIME- COACH MAX MADRUSSAN The Richmond Midget A2 Blues were invited to travel to Whitehorse and play a 3 game series versus the Whitehorse Mustangs Midget A1, February 6-9. Although thewhitehorse Mustangs won the first 2 games, the 3rd game, on Sunday, was a thriller.itended in a 5-5 tie. For the entiregamerichmond was winning and then Whitehorse came back to take the lead, 5-4. Then with 34 seconds remaining in the game, Matt Richardson scored to tie the game WOW Goal scorers weresam Harkness, Connor Martyniuk, Matt Bailey, and 2 formatt Richardson. The MVPs were Riley Hass and Connor Martyniuk. We then had a shoot-out and Whitehorse won that. After the game, the entire Whitehorse team parentshosted us to a potluck dinner at the Sports Complex. It was a buffet dinner which included baked ham and scallop potatoes. It was excellent. As for our Whitehorse hosts, I can't say enough about them. They took great care of all of us. Theybilleted all of our team and welcomed our boys into their home, fed them, drove them, and took care of them as their own. This is such a huge event in Whitehorse that we were covered by the Yukon News and I was interviewed by the CBC North. It wasn't just all hockey. On Saturday we took the team into the wilderness for Dog Sledding. It was -15C and with the wind chill -25C. The boys spent the entire day in the wilderness and in the snow, which tired them out for the game that evening. It was an experience of a lifetime and our boys have great memories and made new friends. Thanks Max Madrussan Coach RMHA Midget A2 Blues

PEE WEE A1 PEEWEE A1 - TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS Richmond Minor s PeeWee A1 Blues finished on a high note with a season ending tournament win this past weekend at Richmond Ice Centre. Representative teams from Vancouver Island, Fraser Valley, Whistler and local teams took part in this well-rounded tournament. The Richmond Blues looked to follow up on a good showing in the Pacific Coast Amateur Hockey Association (PCAHA) playoffs, with a new sense of belonging with teams ranked higher than themselves. The team saw an opportunity to show what they had learned all season and put the finishing touches on a successful season. With wins against Surrey A2 (13-1), Oceanside A1(7-0), Victoria A1 (12-0) and Langley A2 (9-2) in the round robin games, Richmond finished 1st place in their pool. Their next opponent in the playoff round was Burnaby Minor A1 who would see the same fate as past opponents as the Richmond Blues controlled the rough affair with a 5-0 victory to advance to the final to face the also undefeated Chilliwack A1 team. Facing a Tier 1 Chilliwack team would have the Richmond Blues face their toughest match-up of the tournament. Chilliwack would set the tone with a quick 2-0 lead, only to have Roman Pallone get the blues back in the match with a power play goal ending the first period in a 2-1 score. The second period would have the game swing in Richmond s favour with key saves by goalie Rajan Beryar to keep Richmond within reach of the Chilliwack Bruins. Goals by Muhammad Abdul-Baasit and captain, Glenn Gawdin, would end the second period in Richmond s favour 3-2. Richmond would then seal the deal in the third period with two more goals by Glenn Gawdin to complete his hat trick for a 5-2 final win for the home town of the Richmond Blues. A complete team effort made the impossible Possible With stellar goaltending by Rajan Beryar and the rock solid defensive play of second year players Kevin Coates, Leah Lum, Tyler Yip and Colin Phang, and first year defensemen Connor Kluthe-Tasaka and Graham Fleming, kept the Chilliwack Bruins off balance. While offensive scoring was supplied by Roman Pallone, Muhammad Abdul-Baasit and Glenn Gawdin, full team effort was also supplied by offensive players Chandler Bradley, Stephen Watanabe, Matthew Mah, Eitan Bloom, Ryan Molina and Isaiah Yu. A tournament-shortened injury to Alex Bernardini filled out the rest of the Richmond squad. The Richmond coaching staff of Head Coach, Grant Coates and Assistants, Larry Beryar and Ryan Uyeno saw a complete 360 degree turnaround this season that saw the Richmond Blues work their way back into Tier 1 competition and come out on the winning end.

BANTAM BLUES BANTAM - ROAD TO PROVINCIALS COMEBACK WIN GAME 1 WIN 4 COQ 1 Friday - game (1 ) versus Coquitlam - Coq started the game strong scoring 1st goal on power play. After the first period the shots were BLUES 11 Coq 8. The BLUES came back in 2nd and 3rd period to control the game and territorial play w strong puck movement. The BLUES tied it in 2nd period on goal by Carter Popoff, coming right after penalty kill. The BLUES went ahead 2-1 on goal by Justin Uyeno on nice feed from Jeremy Chiang. Rmd went up 3-1 on goal by Brayden Low, on goal mouth scramble. 3-1 after 2nd period. 3rd period, Mark Pearlman scores to put the BLUES up 4-1, on another goal mouth crash. Final 4-1 BLUES, shots on goal BLUES 31, Coq 21. VICTORY OVER BURNABY WINTER CLUB GAME 2 WIN 2 BWC 1 Saturday Game (2) RMHA vs BWC, This was very close game, with both teams playing well. BWC was very good at moving puck along outside perimeter and lots of end to end type plays. BWC went up 1-0 in 1st period on a BLUES giveaway in their own zone. 1-0 BWC after 1st period. The BLUES tied it late in 2nd period with nice feed from behind the net from Anthony Ast to Carter Popoff, who shot the puck in from in front. Late in 3rd period, tied 1-1, BWC had to win, because they lost to the NSWC and had to win to have a chance to finish first, a tie would not do it. With 41 seconds left BWC pulled their goalie. After turning the puck over in neutral zone, the BLUES scored into empty net to seal the win. Final score 2-1 BLUES BLUES PERFECT 3-0 GAME 3 WIN 3 NSWC 1 Sunday Game 3 - RMHA vs NSWC 1st period, NSWC scores first, but Bryan McCauley scores one timer in first period to tie it, 1-1 after 1st period. In the 3rd period Lucas MacNeil scores for the BLUES to go ahead. The BLUES had to kill several penalties, and Anthony Ast scores 3rd goal. Final score 3-1 BLUES.The BLUES outshot NSWC 25 ~ 5. Rmd Advances to Provincials with 3-0 record, beating Coquitlam, BWC, and NSWC.

BANTAM BLUES BANTAM - - GREAT RUN ENDS The Bantam A1 team fell just short of their goal, finishing in second at the Bantam Provincials, losing to Abbotsford 7-3. 10 FUTURE WATCH HOCKEY THE FUTURE LOOKS BRIGHT The Future looks bright for Richmond Minor Hockey Blues. Thanks to a totally revamped Hockey Development Program the future Stars of RMHA received some of the BEST hockey instruction available. Coach Larry Hurst Teaching Hockey 3 Coach Glen Wheeler, Connaught Skating Club and Coach Ron Johnson were all brought in as part of the professional development package that was delivered to the Hockey 1-4 players. There was no extra cost to the parents and RMHA is confident that this development program is one of the best offered by any minor hockey association. NEXT SEASON: Look for more of the same great programs which will ensure RMHA up and coming players are given some of the best instruction available to minor hockey players in the Lower Mainland. SPECIAL THANKS: A special thanks to Larry Hurst and Christy Waisman for spearheading the new hockey development.

MIDGET A3 MIDGET A3s WIN BANNER Many players play minor hockey for years and never get a chance to play for a banner, let alone win one. In the case of the Richmond Midget A3 team, they did it twice, winning the banner for first place finish in Tier 6 and winning the playoff banner for the Presidents Series. The team was formed with a group of players, many of whom have not played with each other before. Coach Ed Arnold started the season by introducing regular sessions of dryland, shooting clinics, and specialized practicesto give the players well rounded instruction and to keep them sharp and fit during the season. Entering two tournaments during the season, one in Merritt and the Richmond tournament, the team came close to winning their grouping, but eventually fell short to higher tiered A2/ A1 teams. After Christmas, the dryland and specialized training seemed to have paid off, as the team played better through hard work, more discipline and less injuries. They went to win the regular season banner. The A3 Blues are: Ryan McConaghy, Travis Robinson, Justin Wong, Phil Newsam, Steven Thaker, Dexter Allen, Matt Arnold, Jackson Beavis, Brandon Minhas, Josh Bonor, Alex Bro, Gavin Dhesi, Bryan Chiang, Tyler Siemens, Chan Woo Lee, Nick Steel, Allen Hoegler. Coaches : Ed Arnold, Brian Steel, David Allen, Martin Bertrand.

RMHA Players Participate in 2009 Midget Scholarship Games The 32 nd annual Pacific Coast Amateur Hockey Association Midget Scholarship Tournament was held January 18-24, 2009; and RMHA players Keenan Webb and Jordan Page were part of Team Avalanche. This special recognition event is held annually by the PCAHA to showcase the talents of players in the Midget Division, especially those who exhibit the qualities of good sportsmanship, leadership, character and playing ability. Players must be 17 years old, and be maintaining a certain minimum grade point average to qualify. Players are nominated by team coaches and managers. Congratulations to RMHA player Keenan Webb who was selected to receive a Vancouver Canucks Alumni Association Special Bursary Award worth $500. That award is given to the player on each team who best exemplified excellence and sportsmanship during the course of the tournament. Wayne Gretzky Foundation RMHA is pleased to announce that it is a proud recipient of a $1,000 grant from the Wayne Gretzky Foundation. Wayne Gretzky is helping 99 minor hockey clubs across the country kick-off a great hockey season. Through a team effort with Samsung Electronics Canada and Best Buy Canada, the Wayne Gretzky Foundation is presenting 99 minor league associations with a $1,000 bursary to help them cover expenses related running their minor hockey programs. Created in 2002, the Wayne Gretzky Foundation is dedicated to helping disadvantaged youngsters throughout North America participate in the sport of hockey. As a major supporter of hockey in Canada, the Foundation was a natural fit for Samsung s Four Seasons of Hope program. As a major national retailer and an active member of the communities in which it does business, Best Buy was a natural draft choice for this team. RMHA has elected to use the funds to assist families who may have difficulty in paying hockey registration fees for their children. Richmond Minor Hockey thanks the Wayne Gretzky Foundation for its support of minor hockey in our community. Jeff Lightfoot President: RMHA HITMEN- PENALTY FREE By Rob Mattu BC HOCKEY has awarded RMD BANTAM C1 HITMEN the award for the penalty free challenge. The HITMEN played a game last month and they did not receive a penalty minute. RMHA is proud of this accomplishment from the HITMEN. BANNER YEAR FOR ATOM C by Arthur Wong. On behalf of The Board at Richmond Minor Hockey, we would like to congratulate the Atom C1 (Sings/Gillies), Atom C3 (Ibbott/ Williams), Atom C4 (Taylor/Eagles) teams who have all advanced to the Championship game. 13 JUVENILE A1 Juvenile A1 team - Win League Banner (Regular Season) JUVENILE A1 BLUES PLACE 2ND IN PROVINCIALS The Richmond Juveniles battled hard, but lost to Cloverdale 4-2 to take second place in the Provincials. It was an exciting game, with Richmond scoring first, and taking a 1-0 lead after one period of play. Cloverdale came out hard in the second, scoring two quick short handed goals, but Richmond answered with a goal of their own to tie the game. Cloverdale scored with 30 seconds remaining in the second to take the 3-2 lead. The third period was tight, with Richmond trying to tie the game, but it was Cloverdale, in the final minute of the game scoring a quick one off the draw to make it 4-2 and win the game. Congratulations to the Juvenile team and parents who hosted the Provincials this week. There were a lot of volunteers who made this a successful week And congratulations to the coaching staff, led by Maurice Hamlin, for their hard work in getting the team to play such exciting hockey RMHA Hosts Juvenile Scholarship Game Richmond Minor Hockey Association hosted the first game of the 27 th Annual Pacific Coast Amateur Hockey Association Juvenile Scholarship Tournament on February 1, 2009 at Minoru (Stadium). This special recognition event is held annually by the PCAHA to showcase the talents of players in the Juvenile Division, especially those who exhibit the qualities of good sportsmanship, leadership, character and playing ability. In addition, the tournament aims to promote participation in minor hockey at the Juvenile level and to increase participation by Juvenile players in the PCAHA scholarship program. The first game of the Tournament, played in Richmond, featured the Canucks team against the Wild team which featured RMHA players: defenceman Alex Rose, and forwards Ryan Saretsky, Levi Unrau, Trevor Heath and Rob Savage. It was a close, fast paced game, with the Wild winning 7-4.
