3 3 A MESSAGE From Howler Dear Coyotes Fans, Welcome to your official hockey curriculum book! I am excited for you to learn more about the game of hockey. Passing, shooting, and scoring are all great but the most important thing to remember is to HAVE FUN! 4 What is Hockey? 4 The objective of the game is to put the puck or ball in the net more than the opposing team. ICE HOCKEY 1. Five players and a goalie 2. Uses a puck 3. Pads cover 95% of the player s body 4. Since players wear ice skates, ice hockey must be played on an frozen pond or ice rink surface 5. Offsides (player cannot cross attacking blue line before the puck) results in a faceoff 6. Penalties result in a 2- or 5-minute time-out in the penalty box 7. Play starts with the official dropping the puck between two opposing players (a faceoff) 8. If the puck goes out of play, or a goal is scored, the play begins with a face-off BOTH STREET HOCKEY 1. Goalies wear full equipment 2. Play starts with a faceoff 3. Penalties punish the offending team 4. Cellys, dangles, and flow are highly recommended! Center - Player who takes the faceoffs, spends most of the time with the ball, and moves around the playing surface trying to get the puck toward the opposing net. Usually the playmaking type of players. 2. Right/Left Wing - Wingers play their selected side both defensively and offensively. They are responsible for helping get the ball out of the defensive zone and getting open so their teammates can pass them the ball. These players will shoot/ score the most. 3. Right/Left Defensemen - The defensemen play behind the forwards with the job of preventing the other team from getting shots off. Defensemen are able to score goals, but their main job is to protect and defend the area in front of their goalie. 4. Goaltender - The goalie s job is to prevent pucks from going in the net. He/she is the last line of defense for preventing goals from being scored! Line Changes 1. Make sure you are only spending seconds per shift and changing with your teammates (LINE CHANGES). 2. This will help you save energy and prevent you from getting tired and slow.

6 6 Penalties Minor Penalties Penalties that result in a 2-minute time out in the Sin Bin 1. High sticking - Making contact with an opposing player above the shoulder with your stick, whether intentionally or inadvertently. If the play results in an injury, the penalty can be increased. 2. Holding - Grabbing a player s body, sweater, or stick, or preventing them from getting to the puck. 3. Hooking - Using the blade of the stick to hold an opponent and prevent movement. 4. Cross-checking - A hit in which a player uses the stick, held with both hands, to check an opponent. 5. Roughing - Striking an opponent during an altercation that the officials decide is not severe enough to earn a stiffer penalty. If a player punches another with gloves on during a skirmish, officials will sometimes give a roughing penalty. 6. Tripping - Causing an opponent to fall by tripping with stick or body. Major Penalties Penalties that result in a 5-minute time out in the Sin Bin 1. Boarding - Checking, tripping, or pushing an opponent into the side or end boards. 2. Spearing - Striking an opponent with the blade of the stick in a stabbing motion. 3. Slashing - Striking an opponent with the stick; usually a chop to an opposing player s legs. 4. Charging - A hit in which a player takes more than three strides to gain speed and check an opposing player. a. Can also be called if a player leaves his or her feet to maximize the impact. 5. Check from behind - A check that impacts an opposing player from behind, without allowing the player to brace for the impact. 6. Check to the head - Any contact above the shoulder that puts the head at risk. 7. Fighting - Fighting major is called when players drop their gloves and throw punches at each other.

7 7 Important words to know 1. Zamboni - Car-looking machine that cleans the ice. 2. Penalty Box - The box where players sit and serve their penalties. 3. Referee - Men/women in striped jerseys who officiate the game, call penalties, goals and stoppages of play. Will wear orange arm bands to identify as referee. 4. Linesmen - Men/women who call offsides and icing infractions and drop the puck on faceoffs. 5. Goal - When a player puts the puck in the net with stick. 6. Assist - An assist is awarded to the player or players (maximum of two) who touched the puck prior to the goal. 7. Crease - Goalie-only zone. 8. Hat Trick - When one player scores three goals in a game. a. Natural Hat Trick - When a player scores three straight goals without anyone from their team or the opposing team scoring during their streak. 9. Slap Shot - Hitting the puck with the blade of the stick after taking a full backswing. 10. Wrist Shot - Hitting the puck with the blade of the stick using a quick snap of the wrist rather than a fullback swing. 11. Offside - A player may not skate into his offensive zone ahead of the puck. 12. Icing - Icing is called when a player behind the red line in his end of the rink shoots a puck past the goal line in his offensive zone when both teams are playing at even strength.
