2 INSIDE WHITEBOARD (Information at our fingertips.) You will be in charge of this. Holy crap, that s a lot of boxes! I know. Do not be intimidated! You will be working with two Penalty Trackers and two Outside Whiteboard Operators. Your primary duty will be to mark down what the penalty trackers tell you, 'Majors', 'Minors', or combinations thereof. Your secondary duties are to check the outside whiteboards (located at turns 2 and 4 in RCRD) and let the penalty trackers or wrangler know they have a penalty to look at if they don't immediately notice, and to relay any penalties you hear that the trackers or wrangler did not catch. You may also be asked to check the penalty box to see if they have a whiteboard up. (If they do, notify the wrangler or an inside pack ref.) From here out, I have seen many different ways of recording information on inside whiteboards. There are many different layouts used, and many different boards used. I ve seen boards that light up, boards that have permanent lines, and boards that are just a whiteboard with marker lines scrawled on them. Big ones, not so big ones there s not a lot of standardization out there. So, I ll give a couple examples of ways leagues handle the Inside Whiteboard. UNIVERSAL You will be marking down when a skater gets a minor penalty or a major penalty. You will need to double-check with your penalty trackers frequently to make sure your board and their sheets match. Sometimes they caught one you didn t hear, or a ref changed something. Do not block the whiteboard when you are not writing on it. The coaches, captains, and jammer refs need to be able to see the information you are providing. Stand to one side. Make sure the penalty trackers know the penalties you are recording. Echo them back as you mark them. That way, if you heard one they didn t, they ll know. A major penalty will not cancel out 3 minors. Only a fourth minor will. Notify your wrangler or penalty trackers when a skater is at 3 minors or at 6 penalty minutes.

3 ROC CITY, SIMPLIFIED (No longer in use, but a good style for untrained Inside WB operators grabbed at the last minute.) Minors are in the 4 boxes before the red line, Majors/Penalty Minutes in the 4 past it. We'll be scapegoating Blue #4A for this lesson: 4A Blue has a minor! 4A Blue has a major! 1 major penalty = 1 penalty minute. 4 minor penalties = 1 penalty minute (trip to the box) When a skater gets 4 minors, alert the penalty trackers. They will alert the referees and have the skater sent to the box. DO NOT ERASE until that skater is in the box and seated. Mayhem can happen, and we want to make sure penalties are served correctly. When the skater is seated in the box, erase the 4 Xs and put a 4 in the penalty minute/major section. Jammer referees need to know how many minors their skaters have. That way, they'll know to send their skater to the box if they get their 4 th minor. Some may ask you to signal to them how many their jammer has. Do it as quickly as possible, because they usually signal that information to the jammer herself. 7 penalty minutes means fouling out of the game. This includes penalty minutes incurred in the first and second periods of the game. If they foul out, they re gone.

4 ROC CITY CURRENT (An amalgam of the old style and Tournament) As per the old style, Minors are the 4 boxes before the red line, and Penalty Minutes are the 7 boxes after the red line. Again, 4A is having a very bad bout. 4A, elbows minor! Then, 4A, elbows major! For major penalties, we use the penalty abbreviation from the penalty tracking form/outside whiteboards. If you do not have them memorized by bout day, the penalty tracker can assist you by calling the abbreviation with/instead of the penalty. Try to memorize them, though. When a skater gets her 4 th minor, DO NOT ERASE until she is seated in the box. When she is, IMMEDIATELY erase those minors and write a 4 in the Penalty Minutes section. 4A has had a decidedly terrible bout. When she receives her 7 th penalty minute (any combination of 4s and majors), she fouls out and is removed from play completely. Record her last penalty, then draw a single line through her boxes. There are 2 sets of boxes up by the team names. ADDITIONAL BOXES (Currently used by Roc City) On the left, there are 2 boxes for the team s official reviews. They get one per period. Check the box when used. On the right, there are 3 boxes for team time outs. They get 3 per bout. Check the box when used.

5 TOURNAMENT STYLE (As seen at ECDX) The board for this is simplified. The first space is for minors, the second for penalty minutes. To indicate minors, use single lines. Make sure they are clear and distinct. To indicate majors, use the penalty tracking abbreviation for the penalty given. If 7 penalty minutes are given, the skater fouls out. Draw a line through her section of the board. POSSIBLE PROBLEMS Sometimes, multiple penalties can come in for the same skater. If they get a major and a minor penalty, and that minor causes her to gain a second penalty minute, notify the wrangler or penalty trackers immediately. They will relay it to the inside pack ref, who will notify the penalty box to hold the skater for both minutes. Quite often, penalties come in faster and more frequently in the second period. Tempers get higher, as do frustration/competition levels. Be aware and be ready. Sometimes, a player on each team will have a skater with the same number. Be extra-specialcertain to get the COLOR, number, and penalty. The refs will be aware of the conflict and will hopefully be mindful of it, as will the penalty trackers. Be aware of your surroundings. In addition to the penalty trackers and score trackers, there are also referees skating and skaters getting blocked to the inside. Watch your butt! If any other questions crop up, do not hesitate to ask the penalty trackers or the head NSO.
