4 HOW TO PLAY ROLLER DERBY Pivots ThE Bout A bout consists of two 30-minute periods. Each period is broken up into jams. Each jam can last up to 2 min with a 30 second break between jams. Jammers A JAM When the whistle blows the jam is on. The jammers then work to get through the pack. Who ever comes out of the pack first becomes the lead jammer. Jammers don t score points on their first pass. On subsequent passes, the jammers can score points. The blockers block the opposing jammers while trying to get their jammer through. Lead jammers can end the jam before the two minutes are up by repeatedly placing their hands on their hips. A jam is over once the referee blows their whistle four times. who s who in the pack?? JAMMER BLOCKER The pack - defined as the largest group of blockers from both teams skating within proximity (10 feet). Blockers may not Engage or assist any other players if they are more than 20 feet from the pack.
