Siam Hockey League SHL
Photo credit: Thomas Engstrom Season info Schedule, dates & location. We are thrilled to announce the third season of the Siam Hockey League. A competitive non-contact league with most of the best players in the country. The league consists of 18 regular season games; best-of-three semi-final series and a winner-takes-all Final. The season opener will be played October 11 th 2018 and we wrap up by mid-march 2019; not to interfere with other hockey community events in the city. Games are played at The Rink, 7 th Plaza Rama IX shopping centre. Floor of the Central Grand 2
Hockey in Siam Expected behavior by everyone Ten rules for all players and league members to live by: 1) Be grateful for the opportunity to play ice hockey in Thailand. 2) Play clean; everyone generally has to work the next day. 3) Remain unselfish; change to keep the lines together, play fair. 4) Buy your own tape and beer, always share generously. 5) Respect the referees, without them there will be no game. 6) Stay mature and professional; online, on and off the ice. 7) Always support our sponsors, they help pay for your hobby. 8) Be on time and notify well in advance in case of absence. 9) Appreciate the work put in by the League management. 10) Have fun, but always drink responsibly and post-game. 3
Photo credit: Mr. Nagayama Sign up & draft Balanced competitive teams This is a draft league and teams will be selected to be as competitive as possible by the Team Managers, facilitated by the League Committee. One of the most compelling arguments to play in the SHL is that the teams are even and the majority of games are close. Consideration might be given to keep friends together based upon requests made before the draft, if at all possible. If necessary, the League reserves the right to make alignments to balance weak/strong teams, as we see fit and for the benefit of the League, anytime during the season. 4
Photo credit: Mr. Nagayama Scholarship The Johnny Oduya scholarship We are extremely proud to continue to work together with Johnny Oduya on this initiative. Applications are being accepted now through Friday, August 31 st, The scholarship is in place to help grow ice hockey in Thailand and make playing time affordable for Thais. This is a unique opportunity that will be awarded to one (1) Thai ice hockey player. The league-fee for all regular season and all playoff games will be fully covered by Johnny Oduya for the selected candidate. 5
Photo credit: Mr. Nagayama Rosters Ambition to be fair and competitive We will have minimum four (4) teams this season. Teams may be comprised of male and female players over the age of 16. Each team must dress a minimum of 9 skaters and 1 goalie for each game. If a team fails to report accordingly, a process will be initiated and subs will be assigned by the League committee. If a team does not have the required players at the scheduled opening faceoff, the game will be forfeited and the opposing team wins 1-0. The game will still be played, but a 1-0 score is recorded. 6
Photo credit: Mr. Nagayama Substitutions Assigned by the league committee The league expects that team members are participating in every game of the SHL competition; but there might, of course, be obstacles, preventing full attendance during a 6 month season. Team Managers are responsible for confirming attendance to the SHL Vice President well in advance. Failure by a player to confirm participation might result in a substitution, if it puts the roster below the required skaters. The League Committee will assign subs and the team managers will be informed of their allocated sub before the game. The Committee, led by the Vice President, enjoys full rights to assign subs and shall always do so at his outmost effort to create balanced teams; both for the regular season and the playoffs. 7
Photo credit: Mr. Nagayama League fees 10,000 THB The league fee includes ice time, referees, uniform, score keeper, admin, music, water, photographer, trophies, awards, seasonending party and advertising of the league. Each player must pay the League fee before the season starts. Exceptions can be made if a player desires to make two installments (half before the first game and the other half by the middle of the season). Failure to meet the League payment schedule without contacting the League Treasurer will result in immediate suspension. Players that have outstanding payments will simply not be allowed to participate in the league. 8
Photo credit: Mr. Nagayama Timing of game Three 17-minute periods Teams will be given a 2-minute warmup prior to the start of each game. Each game shall consist of three 17-minute running time periods. In the event a game is within 2 goals in the final 2 minutes of play, the clock will run on stop time. Should the spread in goals be 3 or more in the two final minutes of play, the clock will continue on running time. Each team is permitted one time-out per game. 9
Photo credit: Mr. Nagayama Gameplay rules Governed by IIHF s rule book Hybrid icing (no-change for the defending team). No player is entitled to use his body to intentionally body-check or bump an opponent. Fighting and attempt to injure will not be tolerated. Any player receiving four (4) minor penalties or two (2) 10- minute misconduct penalties in one game will receive a game ejection penalty and automatic one (1) game suspension. Referees can assess a minor, major, match, misconduct, game misconduct, game ejection, or gross misconduct penalty based on severity of verbal comments. Any questionable situation will be evaluated by the Referee in Chief and could lead to suspensions and disciplinary measures. 10
Photo credit: Mr. Nagayama Standings Tied games & final standings Following a tie after regulation, we play 4 minutes of suddendeath 3-on-3 overtime (switching sides if necessary to create "long-changes"). If still tied after OT, we commence immediately with a shootout. The shootout will begin in a sudden death format from the start. Every dressed player will be required to shoot before one player can attempt his second shot. The winning team will receive 2 Standings points, while the losing team will receive 1 Standings point. 1. Highest points 2. Most wins 3. Head to Head record between teams tied in Points 4. Formula = (GF) / (GF + GA) 5. Lowest Goals Against 6. Lowest PIMS 11
Photo credit: Mr. Nagayama Penalties Play hard but clean, respect the ref Calls can only be discussed between referees and the Team Captains. Any questionable situation will be evaluated by the Referee in Chief and could lead to further disciplinary measures. Minor penalty 2.5 minutes Major penalty 6 minutes Match & Misconduct 10 minutes in time penalties Game Misconduct 10 minutes in time penalties & ejection Game Ejection ejection Gross Misconduct 10 minutes in time penalties & ejection 12
Suspensions Subject to review by the league All infractions occurring before, during, and after any scheduled league game are subject to review by the League committee. The League may assess suspensions at any time. Fighting has no place in adult amateur hockey and may RESULT IN A SEASON-ENDING SUSPENSION. See the IIHF rulebook for more details on fighting and the League Rules for more information on the leagues measures to crack down on fighting. Team Managers are the only individuals who may appeal a suspension and any appeal must be received in writing (league form or ) the day after the game. No appeal may be made on 1-game suspensions. 13
Photo credit: Mr. Nagayama Complaints Process & procedures Management expects that everyone adopts a professional and constructive approach to establishing the league and respect the work of those trying to manage it and give opportunities to play. Players are to always go through their Team Managers for any questions, complaints or concerns. Inquiries must be filed through established channels and forms are made available at The Rink and on our online communication platforms. All disputes and discipline matters will be voted on by the League Committee members. In the case of conflict of interest, votes will be cast by impartial members with final decision to be made by the League President. 14
Code of Conduct Expectations on everyone involved A fair and responsible manner, refraining from behaviours that are disrespectful, offensive, abusive, racist or sexist. The league will not tolerate behaviour that constitutes harassment or abuse or bullying. Avoid behaviour which brings the league and/or the sport of ice hockey into disrepute. Don't engage in behaviour that endangers the safety of yourself and others; drinking alcohol pre-game is not allowed. At all times adhere to the rules and regulations at The Rink, the shopping centre and nearby buildings. Failure to comply with this Code of Conduct will result in disciplinary action. 15
Administration Updates, waivers and statistics All players should check the League website and social media for any postings concerning rule amendments, standings and news. Additionally, team managers and players are subscribed to an list used to share important information. Team managers are responsible to have all players sign waivers before the start of the season for regular players, as well as for every game played by the occasional subs. A player without a signed waiver will not play. Statistics are checked and score sheets signed by the Team Managers immediately after the game; all points and stats are thereafter considered final. 16
Sponsorship A prerequisite for the league This is a not-for-profit amateur sports league that is run by volunteers and passionate ice hockey fans. The league receives income from the league fees paid by players, but is also highly dependent on sponsorship to make playtime affordable. The largest expense is ice time, but also to compensate referees, scorekeepers and rink staff, pay for uniforms, advertisement, administration, awards, trophies and supplies. SHL s league management is always seeking sponsorship; if you have solid ideas and thoughts that can help the league secure funding don t hesitate to contact us. Thank you! 17
Green initiatives Eco-conscious approach We continue to inspire a little eco-consciousness and reduce our footprint also in the upcoming season by using our SHL water bottles sponsored by KCG Corporation. There is 8 million tons of plastic waste in our oceans, and we can all play a part in reducing this amount. In total we used 1920 water bottles during our inaugural season two years ago, something we completely replaced this past season by simply changing the procedure for how we provide water to our players. We hope that you like our approach; feel free to contact us if you have more thoughts and other green initiatives ideas for our consideration. 18
Photo credit: Mr. Nagayama Team uniforms Professional appearance expected Our ambition is to have a competitive league and showcase a respectable on-ice product. Attracting sponsors and being role models for younger generations includes a professional appearance by all players. Players with substandard equipment or uniform not consistent with his/her team will simply not be allowed to play. League management will be strict on this rule to force compliance for the long term benefits of the league. Jerseys and socks are included in the league fee and will be given to the Team Manager for distribution to individual team members and the occasional substitutes. Players are responsible for maintaining their appearance and keeping track of their uniforms at all times. 19
Photo credit: Thomas Engstrom Awards Team & individual trophies Trophies and awards are a symbol of accomplishment and for many players a source of great pride; it is also forming an essential part of SHL s heritage. Rewards are therefore an important part of the Siam Hockey League; especially since we aim for competitive games, while at the same time encourage good sportsmanship and promote fair play. The SHL feature several different trophies of diverse categories, the majority are passed on from year-to-year, with the players individual name placed on the trophy. The most sought after individual trophy is The Johnny Oduya MVP award, given to the player adjudged to be the most valuable player to his team during the regular season. 20
About us Not-for-profit recreational league Aim: To provide players with the opportunity to play safe, organized hockey according to the league rules and regulations. To manage the league in such way that it promotes good sportsmanship and fair play. To work with players to foster the ideals of winning modestly and accept defeat gracefully; live by giving credit to the team that wins and not to question or dispute referees decisions. To co-operate and work with players, sponsors, The Rink, media and other stakeholders to maximize mutual benefits and develop professional, long-term sustainable relations. 21
Photo credit: Mr. Nagayama Overall mission League Committee To offer adult players in Thailand a competitive and well organized non-contact ice hockey league. Please take note that the League Committee are individuals that have come together because they are passionate about the sport and have taken the initiative to ensure we have the opportunity to play ice hockey in Bangkok; despite having jobs, families and other interests. The SHL is not-for-profit and we will strive to continue making the league as great as we can, but we need your patience and support each year. We would ask, as we move forward, slowly and methodically, that you support and encourage us the best way you can Thank you! 22

We want players that consider it a great privilege to be able to play ice hockey in Thailand and we aim to establish a sustainable way of ensuring that the Siam Hockey League is here to stay. Therefore, not one player, not one team, not one decision is going to come before the greater good for the league.
