2 Session #1 Topics (8:15 AM) Dealing with Difficult People Presenter: Tom Slaird (Minnesota Hockey) Overview: Learn best practices for fairly and effectively communicating with people during difficult circumstances. Attendees will have the opportunity participate in and/or observe simulated situations. Running Your Hockey Presenter: Dan Beckman (Legal Advisor, Minnesota Hockey) I Overview: Learn the essentials of running a youth hockey program as an affiliate of Minnesota Hockey including the legal duties of board members and developing effective bylaws. Managing Finances Presenters: Doug Kephart (Treasurer, Minnesota Hockey) II Overview: Fulfill your association s fiscal responsibility to its members and ensure long term financial stability by utilizing critical financial management policies, controls and processes. Role of the Hockey Director Presenter: Guy Gosselin (Regional ADM Manager, USA Hockey) Overview: Player development is one of the key components to a healthy hockey association. See how building an appropriate structure and process can improve the development of coaches and players. Session #2 Topics (9:30 AM) Recruit & Keep Great Youth Hockey Volunteers Presenter: Tom Slaird (Minnesota Hockey) Overview: Finding and keeping smart, selfless volunteers is often a difference maker for youth hockey associations. This session will feature the sharing of tips and tricks on finding the right people. Local Discipline, Grievances & SafeSport Presenter: Steve Oleheiser (Grievance Committee Chair, Minnesota Hockey) and Scott Gray (Vice President & SafeSport Coordinator, Minnesota Hockey) I Overview: Minimize the stress involved with addressing complaints, issuing suspensions or holding hearings by implementing a consistent process that emphasizes objectivity. Plus, learn what role SafeSport has in preventing and addressing various situations.
3 Charitable Gambling: Raise Funds the Right Way Presenter: Brian Holcomb (Compliance Specialist, Minnesota Gambling Control Board) II Overview: Charitable gambling is one of the most effective and efficient ways to raise funds and keep costs low for participants. Holcomb shares how associations can ensure access and enhance this method of fundraising by maintaining appropriate compliance with Minnesota regulations. Hot Topics in Player Development Presenters: John Perry (Vice President of Hockey Ops, Minnesota Hockey), Chris Walker (TRIA Orthopaedic), Guy Gosselin, Bill Manuel (Associate Goaltender Coordinator, Minnesota) and Emily West (ADM Manager for Female Hockey, USA Hockey) Overview: Panelists discuss hot topics in the ever-evolving world of player development. Focus areas will include long term athlete development principles, importance of goalie development, player safety and more. Session #3 Topics (10:45 AM) Assessing Performance Presenters: Dave Margenau (President, Minnesota Hockey) and Tom Slaird (Minnesota Hockey) Overview: Evaluate your organization s effectiveness in key areas and use the results to target areas of focus for the upcoming season. Club Excellence: A Tool to Make Your Better Presenter: Shannon Webster (Manager, Program Services, USA Hockey) I Overview: Club Excellence is a new online portal system designed to give the 1,500 USA Hockey associations a unique home to drive organizational success. The portal walks youth hockey leadership through the day-to-day needs of running a successful hockey association. Managing Player Safety Presenter: Kevin Margarucci (Manager of Player Safety, USA Hockey) II Overview: Prioritize player safety in your organization by preparing for common and emergency situations involving participant safety such as managing concussions, use of AED s and much more. Building a Better Girls Hockey Program Moderator: Emily West (ADM Manager for Female Hockey, USA Hockey) Overview: Learn how utilize ADM principles for age-appropriate training and competition to build a stronger framework and support system for girls hockey in your community.
4 Session #4 Topics (1:00 PM) The Minnesota Model and High School Hockey Moderator: Glen Andresen (Executive Director, Minnesota Hockey), Sean Goldsworthy (Minnetonka), Grant Clafton (Greenway) Overview: Panelists will discuss how youth hockey associations in Minnesota can work together with high school coaches to benefit all players in the community. State & National Resources for Growing Hockey Presenters: Shannon Webster (USA Hockey) and Derek Ricke (Minnesota Hockey) I Overview: USA Hockey and Minnesota Hockey provide a number of programs and resources designed to help local associations grow the game at the grassroots level. How to Organize Successful Tournaments Presenter: Nick Nyhus (Tournaments Chair, Minnesota Hockey) II Overview: Tournaments are one of the highlights of the youth hockey experience for kids. Hear how your association can maximize the impact its tournaments have on all participants and volunteers. Principles for Developing Goaltenders Presenter: Bill Manuel (Associate Goaltender Coordinator, Minnesota Hockey) Overview: Hear about the latest efforts of Minnesota Hockey and USA Hockey to provide goaltending development opportunities as well as recommendations on how to develop goaltenders in your association. Session #5 Topics (2:15 PM) Developing a Positive Culture Presenters: Glen Andresen (Minnesota Hockey), Corey Koskie (Wayzata Youth Hockey, former Minnesota Twin), Sean Goldsworthy (Minnetonka) and Laura Halldorson (University of Minnesota) Overview: Andresen will lead a panel discussion on the challenges presented by the current culture of youth sports, ideas on how to address them and the role youth leaders have in creating a positive culture for their organization. Age-Appropriate Player Development Presenter: Guy Gosselin (Regional ADM Manager, USA Hockey) I Overview: Gosselin offers a closer look on how the American Development Model applies to athletes in older age groups and can be used to enhance long term development on and off the ice.
5 Enhancing Communication Presenter: Trent Ulrich (SportsEngine) II Overview: Learn how taking advantage of SportsEngine s various tools within your website can enhance how your association communicates with players and parents at both the team and organization levels. High Performance and Tier I Hockey Programs Presenter: John Perry (Vice President of Hockey Ops, Minnesota Hockey) Overview: Minnesota Hockey offers its players with opportunities to train with and against the state s best players.
