6 Letter From The President Welcome. On behalf of the Stock Horse of Texas, welcome to the 2017 Stock Horse World Show, Futurity & Derby. It s been a heck of a year for this great organization, and we ve worked hard to see that your blood, sweat and tears have a proper showcase event to be celebrated and rewarded. I m tremendously proud and privileged to be a part of this organization and have thoroughly enjoyed watching our members grow throughout this last year. Our numbers at this year s World Show experienced an increase of 30%. I attribute that to the friendliness and welcoming attitude of our members. New riders come to a show to check us out and are met with a smile and a glad you are here...let us know if you need anything. Newbies to the horse show world appreciate feeling a part of something, and the old timers say showing with Stock Horse of Texas is how it used to be at a horse show. Thanks for your efforts at keeping our atmosphere family friendly and engaging. I hope that our success as an organization will be measured by your individual success. 9 Collegiate competition Collegiate riders are an exciting part of SHTX competition. The collegiate program was designed to promote education of horsemen in the safety, care and training of the versatile stock horse; to enhance the education of college students interested in the versatile stock horse; and to use the horse as a means to teach students how to represent themselves with responsibility, character and teamwork. Colleges can enter as Division I (6 team members) or Division II (4 team members). Riders are placed within their respective division, as well as against other collegiate riders. Each point rider earns toward the team total. 16 Lindsey & Belcher Scholarships The Zinn Lindsey Memorial Scholarship is awarded to the highest placing collegiate rider in the SHTX Derby. Zinn was a very visible member of SHTX, riding and working at many shows over the years. Zinn was an accomplished horseman, winning several state and national titles. He was active in SHTX, the Ranch Cutting Horse Association, the Ranch Horse Association of America, National Reined Cow Horse Association and AQHA. Tragically, Zinn s life was cut short in May, 2012, days after winning the RHAA Junior Horse World Championship. The Zinn Lindsey Scholarship was established to encourage and reward collegiate riders with a horse in the SHTX Derby. Last year s recipient was Morgan Holmes. Nathan & Norma Belcher Nathan Belcher was an ardent supporter of the versatile stock horse. To honor his dedication to western heritage and his commitment to the mission of SHTX, an anonymous Zinn Lindsey donation was made in his name in This donation established the Nathan Belcher Scholarship Award. Nathan s wife and long time SHTX secretary, Norma Belcher, passed away in August, and her family wanted to add Norma s name to the scholarship. The Nathan and Norma Belcher Memorial Scholarship is presented to the highest placing collegiate entry in the SHTX Futurity. Jayton Baca and Lanham Brown received the award in Dr. Josie Coverdale Scholarship A former competitor and member of SHTX, Dr. Josie Coverdale, passed away in February, 2016 from a car accident. Dr. Coverdale was an assistant professor in equine sciences at Texas A&M and an active part of the Equine Initiative. She was known for her passion for her career, her students, her selflessness and her character. In her memory, a SHTX scholarship has been established by her friends. The scholarship will be presented to a TAMU student who shows at the SHTX World Show and embodies the same hard work, excellence and pleasant demeanor that Josie shared with everyone. At the 2017 SHTX banquet, Mark Coverdale, Josie s husband, presented Morgan Moreno with the first Stock Horse of Texas scholarship in Dr. Coverdale s name. 17 Darlene Hicks Scholarship 2017 Recipient Gillean Nixon We lost a tough, brave cowgirl when Darlene Isbell Hicks of Hawley, Texas, died on July 10, She never rode a horse until after she married Thomas Hicks, but she soon loved to ride and show horses. She learned to team rope with her husband and also enjoyed wagon driving. Darlene was a member of Stock Horse of Texas Association, Texas Draft Horse Association and American Stock Horse Association. She was diagnosed with colon cancer in While fighting cancer, she showed in Stock Horse of Texas competitions on several different horses. She won buckles, bronzes, a saddle and she was SHTX Reserve Champion Limited Non-Pro for One saying that gave Darlene encouragement during her battle was, courage is being scared to death - but saddling up anyway. In her honor, the Darlene Hicks Scholarship fund was established. This scholarship is awarded to a graduating high school senior. This year s recipient is Gillean Nixon. Gillean is studying equine assisted therapy at North Centeral Texas College. In her application essay, Gillean quoted Og Mandino who said The victory of success is half won when one gaines the habit of setting and achieving goals. She said through SHTX clinics, she has accomplished many of her goals, including becoming a better rider. Gillean is the co-captain of the NCTC Stock Horse Team. SHTX Futurity & Derby 17
