1 September 2015 The Stock Horse Roundup Stephenville, World Show remain Stock Horse of Texas P. O Box 310 Wolfforth, TX Executive Director Kim Lindsey Executive Secretary Patsy McBee Executive Committee Baru Spiller, President Laurie Shelton, DVM Kris Wilson, Ph.D. Steve Drennan Theresa Woodard Mozaun McKibben Board Members Rick Thompson Cooper Cogdell Susan Bozeman Tony White Lanham Horne William Lewis Educational Liaisons Jim Heird, Ph.D. Anna Morrison The 2015 year is starting to wind down. It s been a busy fall, with shows in Hamilton, Vernon and Bryan all in a matter of about 7 weeks! Stephenville is just around the corner, and then it s time for the Stock Horse World Championships! If you re planning to go to the Stephenville show, please note there will NOT be any classes on Sunday. This was on the calendar as a two-day show (Saturday & Sunday) but the main show will be on Saturday only. Of course, we will have a great clinic on Friday. The clinicians in Stephenville are: Ron Ralls - Cow; Al Walton - Reining; Earnest Wilson - Trail; and Tom Neel - Pleasure. Friday night we ll kick things off with AQHA Ranch Riding and AQHA Ranch Cutting. All of the SHOT classes and the remaining AQHA Versatility Ranch Horse classes will be on Saturday. The Stock Horse World Championships are scheduled for October 30 through November 1 in Abilene. It will be a very full three-day event. There will be two standard SHOT shows on Friday and Saturday. The shows will be combined to declare the Stock Horse World Champion in each division. We will also crown a Collegiate champion team. On Sunday, we will host the SHOT Futurity and Derby, as well as the AQHA Ranch Riding classes. This year, we will not host an AQHA Ranching Heritage event. Entry forms for the SHOT show on Friday and Saturday will be available online soon. Last year, we awarded more than $75,000 of cash and prizes over the threeday event. Spread the word and invite your friends. If you haven t been to many SHOT shows this year, the World Championships will be a great one to put on the calendar! The Whitten Inn (University) will have a group rate on hotel rooms. They can be reached at for reservations

2 Diamond Sponsors Are you concerned with winter hair? Fall and winter mean shorter days to ride after school or work. It also means cooler weather is on its way. Mother Nature knows horses need a long, thick hair coat to keep warm in the winter, and shorter days (aka less daylight) triggers the start of a winter hair coat. Many SHOT exhibitors let their horse grow a winter hair coat. There s less labor involved by going natural, and although SHOT shows year-round, a winter hair coat is not detrimental to success in SHOT. However, some exhibitors prefer to keep their horse s short, summer hair coat. If you re among the group wanting to keep that summer shine, be prepared for the extra work. Maintaining timers, lights and blanketing regularly are all necessary to trick your horse that it s still July. Research from Dr. Doug Householder and Dr. Pete Gibbs at Texas A&M showed extending the day your horse experiences to 16 hours is necessary to Murphy Ranch & retard hair growth in the fall and winter. The easiest scenario is to put lights on a Stylish Rey Gay timer so the horse receives 16 hours of day and 8 hours of dark. Leaving the lights on for 24 hours will not work, according to Householder and Gibbs. Platinum Sponsors Several in the industry say it is also important to keep the horse warm. In an article on America s Horse Daily, trainer Gigi Bailey said one good chill is all it takes for a horse to lose a good hair coat. In Texas, a heated barn is not required, but the use of sheets and blankets can help keep your horse nice and toasty. It is not necessary to take lights and timers to shows as long as you will only be gone a few days. But if a horse is out from under lights for several days, it will start to grow a winter coat. Approximately 10 foot candles of light is enough to convince your horse not to grow hair. You don t have to buy a light meter to check how much light is in your stall. Basically, if you can read a newspaper from anywhere in the stall, it is enough light. Double F Ranch Don t forget, horses that are blanketed throughout the winter need regular Roy & Sherri Fischer brushing. Blankets can get itchy and loose hair will not fall out easily with blankets on. Here are a few blanketing tips from America s Horse Daily: The blanket should be snug around the neck, with the spine of the blanket ending at the top of the tail. Surcingles should be adjusted so that you can barely get your hand sideways (about 4 inches) between the horse and the surcingle. Adjust leg straps the same Jay & Cathy Clements way. You want them loose enough so the horse can walk and move comfortably, but not so loose that he could get a hoof caught. Crossing the leg straps at the center (between the horse s back legs) helps reduce the chance of a hoof getting caught. Always snap to the same side of the blanket as the strap originates. To measure for a new blanket, start at the center of his chest, along his side, ending in the middle of his tail. If the measurement you get is an odd number, 77 for example, round it up to the next number.

Part 2 with Jim Truemper As recounted in Part 1 in the last newsletter, the third SHOT Competition was held at the Southland Land & Cattle Co. I have learned a few new facts about this show that I was not aware of last time. I was talking about this ranch with Jason Becker after the Sulphur Springs show where he served as the cow and pleasure judge. As a teenager, Jason and his father, Donnie, frequently helped Ranch Manager, Kenneth Leatherwood, with gathering cattle and other ranch chores. The ranch, located in Kaufman County east of Dallas, was approximately 15,000 acres. The ranch was a cow/calf operation which crossed Charolais bulls on F-1 tiger stripe heifers which worked well in the higher humidity of northeast Texas. The main headquarters of Southland Land & Cattle Co. was located in Irving just northeast of the old Texas Stadium site and north of the University of Dallas in an area which is now known as Las Colinas. In the mid-60s when I was a student at UD, the Irving ranch was the Hackberry Creek Ranch of John and Ben Carpenter. Students from UD would cross the fence to have beer parties as no drinking was allowed on campus. Mr. Carpenter did not care as long as no trace was left of the gathering. See, you can learn all kinds of things from one little SHOT show! This photograph taken by Mary Anne Truemper captures only some of the participants at this third SHOT competition. Since last time, I was also able to determine that the date of this show was October 24, Also, my tonguein-cheek assumption about Casey Deary s driver s license may have been correct because Jason told me that both he and Casey were 17 at the time. The other significance of this photo is that Kim Lindsey used it on the cover of her presentation when she was being interviewed for the position of SHOT Executive Director. I wonder what ever became of the sign board with the original SHOT logo. Those pictured are standing left to right: Joe McWilliams, Donnie Becker (Vice President), Billie Phillips (in front of Donnie), Wayne Phillips, Skip Hengy, Jack Jenson (member of the original SHOT Leadership Team), Derek Rogers (Reserve All Around Champion), John Fred McWilliams, Kim Lindsey (Secretary and All Around Champion), the next two men are unidentified, and Stan Smith (President). Also shown kneeling are Gay Bingham, Casey Deary, and Jim Truemper. I believe the boy in the striped shirt is Kenneth Leatherwood s grandson. Then as now, Norma Belcher kept the books, and, as you can see, we were finished and the sun was still up!!!

7 Stock Horse Roundup Were you SHOT in Vernon? More photos are on our Facebook page! September 2015 AQHA Versatility Ranch Horse Update If you have been competing in AQHA Versatility Ranch Horse competitions, the dates for the VRH World Show are set for March in Houston. This is a great show and Houston has some of the best hospitality around (think free meals each day and help loading and unloading your trailer!) Charlie Hemphill with AQHA recently gave us an update on VRH with some important information you need to know: QUALIFYING There are multiple ways to qualify for VRH World. To qualify and compete in the VRH All Around (show in any/all of the 6 VRH classes) you must do one of the following: 1) Earn 1 point in the Open Senior division or 1/2 point in Open Junior, Amateur or Youth VRH All Around. This will qualify you to ride in any/all of the 6 VRH classes at the VRH World, or... 2) Show in 3 VRH shows in which you are eligible for the All Around. *to be an all around entry/qualifier, you must show in at least ONE cattle class, show in conformation and 1 additional class (trail, reining or ranch riding) To qualify PER CLASS and show only in that particular class (not as an All Around), the requirements are the same: 1) Earn 1 point (Open Senior) or 1/2 point (Open Junior, Amateur or Youth) in the particular class you showed in, or... 2) Show in that particular VRH class at 3 shows. ALL AROUND CALCULATIONS RULE CHANGE! Starting in 2016, the Limited Cow Work (boxing) class WILL COUNT toward all around points, just as the regular Cow Work class counts. Exhibitors must pick one; they can not show in both for points. This rule change WILL BE IN EFFECT for the VRH World Show in March and applies to both Amateur and Youth.
