2 2 Thank you for participating in the Jasper County 4-H Horse & Pony program! We look forward to getting to know all of and your family and helping you in any way possible. We hope you will enjoy the 4-H season and help provide a lasting relationship for years to come with fellow equine enthusiasts along the journey. Best of luck this fair season! The following information is presented as an overview ONLY for the Jasper County 4-H Horse & Pony members. The purpose of this overview is to inform new members about what to expect throughout the 4-H year; and refresh the older members as well. Some dates and events are subject to change. We will do our best to keep you informed of any changes via through the Purdue Extension Office located at 2530 N. McKinley Avenue in Rensselaer. The rules and guidelines, regarding Jasper County 4-H and the Horse & Pony project, can be found in many areas: Here in this overview, in the 4-H Horse & Pony Handbook that each 4-H horse & pony family should have, the Jasper County Extension website ( the Jasper County 4-H Insight Book, and also in the Jasper County Fair Book that is published in June. In order for us to keep you informed, at any time you have a change of address, phone number, or address, please contact the Jasper County Extension Office at or ext to update those things. From there, we will make sure your proper 4-H club leader will, in turn, get that information as well. If for any reason you prefer to have information sent to two different addresses, we will also need to know that. 3 The following is directly out of your 2014 Indiana 4-H Horse and Pony Handbook (4-H 661): 3 4-H Program Policies 4-H Mission: The Indiana 4-H Youth Development mission is to provide real-life educational opportunities that develop young people who will have a positive impact in their communities and the world. 4-H Vision: Indiana 4-H Youth Development strives to be the premier, community-based program empowering young people to reach their full potential. Objectives 4-H events, activities, and experiences serve as building blocks through which 4-H members self confidence, inquiry, interpersonal cooperation, concern for community; and decisionmaking skills are developed. The objectives of the Indiana 4-H Horse and Pony program are: 1. To develop leadership, initiative, self-reliance, sportsmanship and other desirable character traits. 2. To develop an appreciation of horse well-being and proper horsemanship. 3. To experience the pride and the responsibilities of owning a horse or pony. 4. To learn good horsemanship and an understanding of proper management for breeding, raising and training horses and ponies. 5. To provide an opportunity to observe and learn through participation and observation. 6. To accept constructive criticisms and learn new ways of training and caring for animals. 7. To provide an opportunity for educational experiences through county, area and state functions. Goal & Philosophy 1. The Indiana 4-H Horse & Pony Handbook is written as a training manual for 4-H members, parents, horse show judges, and 4-H volunteers throughout the state of Indiana. 2. Due to the variations in size, organization, and youth interests of the county horse & pony programs, counties have the right to adapt or add to these rules to meet local needs. A. The county Extension 4-H/Youth Educator has the final say in using or changing class rules and specification for their respective county shows. B. Although the State Fair may be the capstone exhibition for many youth, policies should not be directly adopted from the Indiana State Fair show without considerable thought and discussion regarding a goodness-of-fit for those policies at the county level. 3. It is the policy of 4-H to be an inclusive organization. A. No county policy or practice should be used to arbitrarily exclude youth from either membership or participation. B. Youth should participate in 4-H Youth Development opportunities at levels and times that best suit the youth s development and support family involvement. C. County 4-H policy is guided by the county 4-H policy-making or governing board (i.e. 4-H Council) as provided by the County Extension Board. 4. Extension employees and volunteers are obligated to eliminate (and should not create) any practices that limit, deprive, or tend to deprive any youth of opportunities for membership and/or participation in the Indiana 4-H Program. 5. Because the 4-H events, activities, and experiences serve as the building blocks for youth development, the more experiences the 4-H member can do themselves the more the youth will benefit. It is expected that the member do most of the management, riding, lunging, and driving with assistance always being acceptable if/when needed for safety or educational reasons. 6. Rules governing exhibitor safety (headgear and boots) and animal well-being are mandatory at all 4-H horse and pony events and activities, and cannot be altered by county programs. 7. When the 4-H member comes to the Indiana State Fair 4-H Horse & Pony Show, the Class Specifications (Rules) found in this manual will be strictly followed. 8. As the Indiana 4-H Horse & Pony program is a multi-breed program, classes offered at shows shall be inclusive of ALL

4 4 breeds, with the ultimate decision of classes to enter made by 4-H member and family. The following is directly out of your 2014 Indiana 4-H Horse and Pony Handbook (4-H 661): Indiana 4-H Horse & Pony Program Policies Please Note: Program policies may be updated more frequently than this handbook. The official Indiana 4-H Program Policies and Procedures supersede any policies in this book and may be accessed by contacting your county educator. 1. When attending, participating, or acting on behalf of the 4-H program, all persons are expected to conduct themselves in accordance with accepted standards of behavior, show respect for others rights, and refrain from any conduct which may be injurious to the 4-H program. 2. Safety rules governing headgear and boots, and rules addressing animal well-being, are mandatory at all 4-H horse and pony events. Judges have the responsibility to refuse to conduct classes in which these safety rules are not enforced. 3. Inhumane treatment of animals, including a Body Condition Score of less than three (3.0), impolite behavior, poor sportsmanship, or disruptive actions, (as deemed by the show management) will result in disqualification and/or removal from the grounds. 4. All 4-H Horse & Pony animals participating in 4-H activities, must exhibit a minimum Body Condition Score of three (3.0) while the preferred BCS is between 4.0 and 7.0. (See AS-552, AS-554, and ID-269 for more information). 5. It is strongly recommended that the Class Specifications (Rules) portion of this Handbook be used as guide in county programs and be adapted and utilized in a way that reflects the needs of each county. Each county program should determine what to offer to 4-H members based on the county needs and not be restricted to the events offered at the Indiana State Fair. 6. The State 4-H Horse and Pony Advisory Committee shall be the representative of Indiana s 4-H Horse and Pony volunteers and member (Refer to the Advisory Committee Constitution and By-laws for details of the committee structure.) 7. Any situation not covered by these policies and rules shall be handled by the proper representative of the Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service, or their designee. 4-H Member Classification 1. Any boy or girl in Indiana who is enrolled in 4-H Horse & Pony may participate in 4-H classes and activities, providing he/she meets the eligibility rules for participation. Youth may only participate in a project in one county. In the case of the Horse & Pony project, youth must exhibit animals, and participate in activities such as horse judging, hippology, horse bowl, etc., in a single county. 2. Youth may become 4-H member when they enter the third grade and continue thru grade 12. These individuals may continue their 4-H membership for a maximum of ten (10) years. A child s grade in school is the grade they were in on January 1st of the current year. Children advance one grade/year of 4-H involvement, regardless of academic standing H Horse & Pony member categories: i. Juniors 3rd-5th grade Ii. Intermediate 6th-8th grade Iii. Seniors 9th-12th grade Animal Classification 1. The age of an animal will be computed on the basis of a calendar year starting on January 1 of the year foaled. For example, an animal foaled any time in 2010 would be considered one year old (a yearling) on January 1, 2011, two years old on January 1, 2012, etc. Animals five (5) years of age and younger will be considered junior animals and those over five (5) years of age are considered senior animals. 2. Animals may not be ridden in 4-H Horse & Pony competitive events before July 1 of their two year old year for reasons pertaining to the horse s physical development. 3. Animals under 40 in height shall not be ridden at 4-H events. It is recommended that the weight of the rider does not exceed 30% of the weight of the animal.

5 5 Measurement Procedures 1. The show committee may measure at random, one time only, any animal of questionable height. 2. The Indiana 4-H Horse and Pony program considers animals 56 inches and under to be ponies, and animals over 56 inches to be horses. Approved Protective Attire Headgear 1. All 4-H members are required to wear a properly fitted ASTM or SEI standard F 1163 (or above) certified equestrian helmet whenever mounted or driving at all 4-H horse and pony events, shows, or activities. Original tags must be present in all approved helmets. 2. The 4-H member is responsible to see that this specified headgear is properly fitted with the approved harness fastened in place whenever mounted. 3. Helmet policies apply to all county, area, and state 4-H horse and pony events, shows, and activities. 4. Protective helmets are recommended for all riders and drivers at all times. It is recommended that all adults working with 4-H members model the desired youth behavior by also wearing protective helmets whenever mounted or driving. Vests 1. Protective vests are recommended in all mounted classes. For more Information regarding Show Guidelines, Ownership of Horse/ Pony, Leasing of Horse/Pony, Indiana State Fair Horse & Pony Show Eligibility, or Indiana State Fair Ownership Requirements please refer to your 2014 Indiana Horse & Pony Handbook provided by the Extension Office. Each FAMILY should have received one to share within the household. You can also obtain this handbook online at Forms & Due Dates Below is a list of the forms with approximate due dates. Please remember the due dates for each form is subject to change. It s always best to check with your 4-H Club leader, or the Extension Office, to verify the due date for each current year. 6 6 Members may always stop in at the Extension Office and grab what they need there as well. 4-H Enrollment (Open Enrollment is Oct. 1 thru Jan. 15) ALL 4-H members are encouraged to enroll online at You will have an option to pay the $20 4-H enrollment fee online, or to pay it at the Jasper County Extension Office via cash or check. 4-H Enrollment is $20 per member and capped out at 3 members per family (You will not pay any more than $60 if there are more than 3 members in the same family). This fee is to help off set the cost of programming material within the state and county. The option of printing out the downloadable enrollment form is available at In this case, feel free to turn in your completed enrollment form along with the Enrollment Fees to the Jasper County Extension office at 2530 N. McKinley Avenue, Rensselaer (47978). When completing the enrollment, members will need to choose which club they wish to participate in. The Trailblazers club is the main Horse & Pony driven club offered in Jasper County; however, horse & pony members are allowed to choose whichever club they prefer. Your 4-H Club leader reserves the right to have an additional club dues fee to help cover the cost of snacks and drinks at the monthly meetings. The Trailblazers club leaders are all noted on the welcome page of this document. Horse & Pony Online Animal ID (Due May 15th) All horses and ponies MUST be entered at in order to be exhibited at the Jasper County Fair, and later at the Indiana State Fair if the member chooses. There is no limit to how many horses you can enroll under each member, just keep in mind that only 2 horses maximum will be allowed to be exhibited at fair (some people have several horses to choose from and do not know for sure which 2 they wish to actually exhibit until closer to fair-time). At this stage in the Horse & Pony Online Animal ID, horses can be co-enrolled under more than 1 member AS LONG AS THAT MEMBER IS IN THE SAME IMMEDIATE FAMILY. No horses can be shared between different families on the Horse & Pony Online Enrollment. It is a good idea to enroll more than one horse, if possible, in case your horse gets an injury and/or sick prior to the county fair. A picture of each horse registered to must have a picture uploaded showing all 4 legs and the face. If your horse has markings on both sides of its body, you will want to upload a couple different angled pictures of the same horse. We will be sending important information as we get closer to April, please watch your and attend your 4-H club meetings to stay up-to-date on this information. Horse & Pony Lease Agreement (Due May 15th) If you are leasing a horse, an Animal Lease Agreement MUST be completed and a copy MUST be on file with the Extension Office no later than May 15th. If you are exhibiting at the Indiana State Fair, KEEP YOUR ORIGINAL LEASE FORM because they will be requiring that documentation at check-in. Visit our website to download the Animal Lease Form ( Vaccination Records (Due May 15th) Any horses enrolled to exhibit at the Jasper County Fair and/or Indiana State Fair are REQUIRED to be vaccinated with a 5-way (Eastern, Western, Tetanus, Rhino and Influenza) Vaccine, as well as a

7 Rabies vaccine. NEW IN 2016: The Strangles Vaccine is required for every horse in addition to the above mentioned for all horses exhibiting at the Jasper County Fair. Vaccinations will be recorded on the existing Certificate of Vaccination Completion Form (4-H 10310W). It is HIGHLY RECOM- MENDED to also protect your horse(s) with a West Nile Vaccine. The Horse & Pony Vaccination Form WILL BE AVAILABLE at a later date. Some of the most local veterinarians are: Dr. Amy Halaburt out of Hebron, Dr. Danah Nuest out of Hebron, Dr. Carl Hites out of Monon, Dr. Rick Davis out of Rensselaer, Dr. Kirk Smith out of DeMotte and Crown Point. Jasper County Horse Location Form (Due May 15th) All horses coming to the Jasper County Fair MUST have a Jasper County Horse Location Form filled out for them and on file at the Jasper County Extension Office no later than May 15th. This provides helpful information for the Jasper County Fair as far as where each horse is usually located. If a horse is being hauled in from out of state, the Certificate of Veterinary Inspection and negative Coggins Test MUST BE FILLED OUT AND KEPT ON FILE IN THE EXTENSION OFFICE NO SOONER THAN 30 DAYS PRIOR TO FAIR. If the Certificate of Veterinary Inspection and negative Coggins is dated prior to 30 days of the fair, it is null and void according to the Indiana Board of Animal Health. If something should happen to the horse listed on the Jasper County Horse Location Form during the county fair and the owner is no where around at the time of the incident, this form will also provide an emergency contact phone number for that horse. Fair Entry Class Participation (Due July 1st) Each member must login to and select which horse(es) they wish to actually bring to fair along with each class that horse is going to be participating in with that member. At this point, keep in mind that the same horse cannot be shared between more than one 4-H member even when in the same immediate family. For assistance on this process feel free to contact the Jasper County Extension Office ( or ext. 4961). Horse & Pony Record Sheet (Due July 1st) All members must complete a set of Records FOR EACH HORSE exhibited at the county fair each year. This Record Sheet has information to be filled out including: Horse s name, age, sex, feeding record, tack supply record, show record, farrier record, and vaccination record. This sheet must be signed off by your 4-H club leader and turned in to your club leader no later than July 1st. (4-H club leaders reserve the right to require an earlier due date for this form for grading purposes). Make sure your sheet is attached in your green 4-H Record Folder. Horse & Pony Activity Sheet (Due July 1st) Along with the above mentioned Record Sheet, ALL members must complete a Horse & Pony Activity Sheet for their grade level. This Activity Sheet is to be completed by using your Beginning Horse Management book, provided to each horse & pony family as a shared resource to use from year to year. This sheet must also be signed off by your 4-H club leader and turned in to your club leader no later than July 1st. (4-H club leaders reserve the right to require an earlier due date for this form for grading purposes). Make sure your sheet is attached in your green 4-H Record Folder. Achievement Record (Due July 1st) At the beginning of your green 4-H Record Folder, make sure you have updated all your exhibits you are turning in, and when you get this folder back at the completion of the fair; you will then want to update how well you did in each completed project. This is simply to keep a running analysis of your 4-H career progress as the years go by. The Extension Office is not perfect, and they might need your help making sure they have your record correct in the future! 7

8 State Fair Entry Information(**New 2016) 1. All entries must be made in accordance with the terms and conditions 2. Online Entry To enter into the Indiana State Fair, please go to and enter online. Competitions >4-H> Online Entry and follow the prompts. Each exhibitor is required to pay an entry fee at the time of entry. An exhibitor will not be considered entered into the Indiana State Fair until payment is made in full. Payment can be made online with a valid credit card. 3. Entry Deadlines and Fees See below **NEW 2016** 8 Enter Between March 1, 2016 July 1, 2016 Department Fee $20.00 (includes parking pass if necessary and 6 admission ckets) Per Class Entry Fee $3.00 Enter Between July 2, 2016 July 31, 2016 Department Fee: $70.00 (includes parking pass if necessary and 6 admission ckets) Per Class Entry Fee: $3.00 Enter Between August 1, 2016 August 21, 2016 WALK IN ENTRIES ONLY DEPARTMENT FEE: $ ( Includes parking pass if necessary and 6 admission ckets) 4. Confirmation of Entry- A confirmation will be sent once entries have been paid in full. A. Exhibitors should bring their receipt received in the mail or if online entry electronic confirmation with them at the time of check-in. Confirmation of entries will not be made over the phone. 5. Exhibitor Packets- Exhibitor Packets will be mailed out if entry is made prior to June 1- July 23 to the exhibitor by the Indiana State Fair Entry Department. A. Packets for entries made from July 23 July 31 will be mailed if there is sufficient return mail time. B. Entering on July 23 or after payment will have to be made to get into the fair then packets can be picked up in the Entry Office. (Communications Building) 6. Color Guard Each county may make multiple Color Guard entries for the State Fair. The entry may contain six (6) participants plus (2) two alternates. Each of the eight (8) animals must have been enrolled by the 4-H member prior to the May 15 deadline. Color Guard exhibitors may enter three (3) classes addition to one Color Guard class. A. Color guard exhibitors must complete individual online entry. No team online entry is required H horse and pony exhibitors may enter only one horse and show in a total of 3 classes in only one of the three shows (English Show, Western Show or Contesting). 8. Each 4-H Horse and Pony may be entered and shown at the State Fair by only one (1) 4-H member (excluding mare and foal-considered as one animal). Tuesday Night Open Rides Beginning in May, on Tuesday nights from 5:30 until 8:00 PM, you will be encouraged to bring your horse and work with him/her in the arena at the fairgrounds; and around other 4-H horse & pony members. The more you expose your horse to the fairgrounds prior to fair, the better. You will help your horse acclimate itself to the loud noises, funny smells, and overall atmosphere during the actual fair by doing this.

9 9 During some of these open rides, there will be opportunities to get one-on-one help with clinicians as well. We will be sending notifications about these open rides in April, so watch your s and keep in touch with your horse & pony leaders. If it starts storming, the covered arena can be used; however, if it starts lightning there is to be no mounted riders. In this case, it is wise to put your horse in one of the stalls until the storm passes. Generally, the first hour to hour and a half of open rides is reserved for the pleasure-style riders. The barrels and poles will not be set up for speed and action practice until at least 6:30 PM. All members will be accommodated as much as possible while keeping the arena as safe as possible. ALL MEMBERS WHO ARE HANDLING HORSES MUST HAVE BOOTS ON. ALL MEMBERS WHO ARE RIDING MUST HAVE BOOTS AND ASTM CERTIFIED HELMETS ON WHILE MOUNTED. Tuesday Night Open Rides is reserved for the 4-H members and their horses. The only person(s) to be mounted on horses should be 4-H members for liability reasons. If a horse is acting unruly, we do encourage the horse & pony leaders to help in any way possible to ensure the safety of that 4-H member and those around. Spring Vaccination Clinic During one of the Spring Tuesday Night Open Rides, Dr. Amy Halaburt out of Hebron will be spending time with any 4-H members and their horse(s) doing annual vaccinations and answering questions. The Jasper County Extension Office will send every Horse & Pony member an reminding them about this opportunity. Often, it is beneficial to have a wellrecognized veterinarian take a good look at your horse to make sure he/she is in good health as you embark on your 4-H season. Pre-Fair Clean Ups Clean-ups at the Jasper County Fairgrounds horse & pony area are an opportunity for each 4-H horse & pony member to come help get the grounds ready for the county fair. There are generally 2 clean-ups scheduled, one in June and one in July prior to fair. You will be receiving s as we get closer to June about these opportunities to come help. Members who participate in the clean-ups have first choice at which stalls they would like to have during the county fair. Some supplies you may want to bring to the cleanups include: pitch forks, brooms, buckets, disinfectants, rags, extension cord, shop vac, toilet cleaner, hammer, nails, and anything else you can think of to help tidy up the arena, stalls, bathrooms, or announcer s stand.

10 10 These are the times that we will need big, strong people to help set up the portable stalls as well. Unfortunately there is not enough stalls under the wooden barns to house all the horses during the fair. Open Horse Show Work Slots Not only will you have the opportunity to get your feet wet by showing your horse prior to fair here at the fairgrounds at the annual open horse shows, but you will also have the opportunity to help run the shows and keep the days going smoothly for all spectators and contestants. Annually, the Jasper County Fair Association puts on an Open Speed Horse Show around the third Saturday of June and again on the Saturday of fair in July. They also put on an Open Pleasure Horse Show on the Sunday of fair in July. Mark your calendars now! Give yourself and your horse the opportunity to get out there and enjoy our beautiful fairgrounds while competing at the same time. Then when you are not showing through out the day, feel free to put your horse in a stall while you help open gates, set up barrels, hand out prizes, etc. Jasper County Fairgrounds Lay Out 1. 4-H horses & ponies MUST be entered ONLINE ONLY via the Animal ID no later than May 15th. There is no limit to the number of horses enrolled; however, only two horses and/or ponies may be shown at the county fair. Mare and foal count as one. 2. Animals must be in the 4-H member s possession and records started by May 15th. No animal may be substituted or traded for the original animal after May 15th. 3. Lease Forms MUST be completed (if applicable) by May 15th. A copy of the complete Lease Form must be on file at the Extension Office no later than May 15th. If you plan on exhibiting at the Indiana State Fair, keep your original Lease Form for check-in at the State Fair in August. 4. An Animal Location Form MUST be completed and on file at the Extension Office no later than May 15th. 5. Any horses enrolled to exhibit at the Jasper County Fair and/or Indiana State Fair are REQUIRED to be vaccinated with a 5-wa (Eastern Western, Tetanus, Rhino and Influenza) vaccine, as well as a Rabies vaccine. Vaccinations will be Certification of Vaccinations Completion Form (4-H 10310W). It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that horse(s) be protected with a West Nile Vaccine. Revised Horse & Pony Project Rules recorded on the existing 5. If a horse is coming to the Jasper County Fair from out of Indiana, a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection: and a negative Coggins test MUST be on file IN THE EXTENSION OFFICE within 30 days prior to fair week. If you are bringing a horse from out of Indiana to the Jasper County Fair,

11 please contact the Extension Office ASAP to verify all paperwork that needs to be on file and the deadline those papers are due. 6. Your completed record sheet & activity sheet must be turned in to the 4-H Club leader by July and must be securely attached in the green Indiana 4-H Club Member s Record Book. 7. In all levels, you may choose to exhibit a live animal, and/or a poster on a topic from the Beginning Horse Management manual. If any part of your exhibit is on a poster, it must follow the poster rules stated in the front of the Insight and/or Fairbook. It is recommended/suggested that all posters, notebooks, and display boards include a reference list indicating where information was obtained, giving credit to the original author, to complete the 4-H member s exhibit. This reference list should/might include website links, people and professionals interviewed, books, magazines, etc. It is recommended this reference list be attached to the back of a poster or display board, be the last page of a notebook, or included as a part of the display visible to the public. A judge is not to discredit an exhibit for the manner in which references are listed or a lack thereof. 8. All 4-H members are required to wear a properly fitted ASTM or SEI standard F1163 (or above) certified helmet, whenever mounted, or driving, at any 4-H horse and pony event. The 4-H member is responsible to see that this specified headgear is properly fitted with the approved harness fastened in place whenever mounted. Original tags must be present in all approved helmets. This policy applies to all county, area and state 4-H horse and pony events. Shows and activities. 9. No more than one member can show the same horse or pony. Members of the same immediate family may all enroll the same horse, but it may only be exhibited by one 4-H er. 10. Any animal exhibited must be owned by the contestant showing the animal, or in partnership with the contestant s father, mother, brother, sister, grandparent, or guardian; or leased by members who may enter into a partnership agreement with someone outside their family. Only immediate family members (parents/step-parents, grandparents/step-grandparents, siblings/step -siblings, aunts, uncles, and legal guardians) may exhibit the horse in open shows without jeopardizing the 4-H ers eligibility. 11. Each 4-H member may show only one animal in each class. An unlimited number of animals may be enrolled in May, but each member may show a maximum of two horses at the fair. Mare and foal will count as one. 12. No stabled horses or ponies are to be released or removed before the published release time (check-in is Friday evening or Saturday until 4:00 PM. All horses must be in place by this time.) The only exception to animals leaving the grounds during fair are to be determined by the horse & pony leaders at the front of this booklet. Arrangements must be made with the horse & pony leaders prior to removing your horse early (horses are released any time after midnight on Friday at the conclusion of fair). 13. Additional hair may be added to the horse s tail ONLY. 14. Riding is restricted to the south end of the fairgrounds. Riding is permitted by 4-H Horse and Pony members ONLY; no rides to be given to non-members. 15. Any animal over 56 will be considered a horse. Animals 56 & under will be in the pony classes. 16. All classes shall be judged by American Horse Show Association rules and/or American Quarter 11

No stallions are eligible to show except weanlings. 18. Brood mares and foals do not compete for champion and reserve champion mare. 19. Dress Code: Proper attire will be worn in all classes at all times. A. proper western shirts will be worn, long sleeve or short sleeve at the option of the judge. B. ASTM Certified helmets MUST BE WORN WHEN MOUNTED AT ALL TIMES. Western hats may be worn during the western type halter and western type showmanship classes. C. Western or English boots must be worn in or out of the ring and around the grounds for safety of the rider when on or around horses. 20. Upon vote of the majority of horse and pony leaders present at the fair, leaders have the discretion to revise show rules in non-state Fair classes if unsafe conditions exist. 21. A minimum of one (1) bag of shavings per stall housing a horse is required. 4-H er must clean assigned stall out when leaving fairgrounds on Saturday, or they will not have completed project. 22. Professional help is allowed up to and including grooming, but not to include riding and driving, during the week of fair. The only exception to this is when disciplinary action of animal is necessary. Disciplinary action of the animal is allowed when a horse is acting in a manner jeopardizing the safety of the rider. Simply refusing to perform is not a reason for disciplinary action. 23. Novice Pleasure and Novice Barrels are only for riders who have not won first place at any county, area or state contest during his/her 4-H career. 24. State Fair Entries: Entry deadline of July 1st. Any 4-H er 3rd-12th grade may exhibit at the Indiana State Fair 4-H Horse Show. It is recommended that the same combination of animal and rider entered for he State Fair show have shown in the same class, if offered, or most similar class if same class is not offered in either their county or area show. Visit for more details. 12 Other Helpful Information: NO TACK STALLS: All of your tack must stay either at your campsite, outside your horse s stall, or in your trailer (no matter where it s parked). It is recommended all valuable tack be locked up. It s usually HOT during fair week. Fans are permitted and encouraged for your horse(s). All extension cords MUST be hung securely in stalls with no dangling cords. Each horse is required to have at least one (1) bag of shavings in its stall. Members may bring their own or purchase them at the fairgrounds or store of their choice. Members are responsible AND expected to keep their horse(s) stall cleaned twice daily, and have fresh water in front of their horse(s) at all times. The fairgrounds will provide wheelbarrows for stall cleaning. Please take care of these wheelbarrows and return them to the shared station you got it from when done using it every day. Stalls may be decorated. Please keep in mind the safety of your horse and those horses stalled on either side. Camping reservations during the fair are to be made ASAP with Homer & Theresa Lakin. Their contact information is listed on the back of this booklet. Camping is $100 for the whole week of fair, no matter what you are camping in.
