1 Turning Point Fundraiser Benefits Homeless, Mentally Ill The Turning Point Foundation is the only non-profit agency in Ventura County that addresses the critical community support needs of mentally ill adults. The organization s 7th annual Champions of Mental Health fundraiser was held May 19 at the Four Jenny & Ralph Harrison Points Sheraton in Ventura. It s such a poignant event. And very well attended by our local elected officials. In attendance were Supervisors Steve Bennett and Linda Parks and Ventura City Council Members Cheryl Heitmann, Jim Monahan, Brian Brennan, Neil Andrews and Carl Morehouse. Page 1 Ventura County Supervisors Linda Parks & Steve Bennett The foundation serves more than 500 of our most vulnerable community members each year through its shelter, supported housing and rehabilitation programs. It recognizes dedicated individuals and groups that have spent considerable time, energy and financial resources to help provide services to those who are often in desperate need of mental health assistance. Jim Harrison & Ventura Deputy Mayor Cheryl Heitmann The Champions of Mental Health honored this year were consumer advocate Liz Warren, community volunteer Diane Bustillos, family advocate Sonna Gray and Lift Up Your Voice, a community program offered by the Unitarian Universal Church of Ventura. Proceeds benefit the Turning Point Foundation s Our Place shelter and drop-in center in Ventura for homeless adults suffering from mental illness. 2 Fillmore s May Festival Celebrates 101st Anniversary Working Together They ve been holding a May Festival in Fillmore since before World War I. That s quite impressive, and the 101st annual spring celebration in The Best Small Town in America on May was, I m certain, as fun and familyfriendly as the festivals that preceded it. This year s festival featured a carnival, a parade down Central Avenue, arts and crafts, food vendors, musical entertainment, a kiddie area for youngsters, and a beer garden for the oldsters. In short, the event has something for everyone! Harrison Industries is a longtime sponsor of this wonderful community event in Downtown Fillmore. New Ventura Boys & Girls Club CEO Holds First Garden Party First, the Harrison brothers Ralph, Jim and Myron join me in welcoming Patrick Davidson as the Boys & Girls Club of Ventura s new CEO. Patrick took over on April 1, following the retirement of Diane Koranda, who for 25 years served as a tireless advocate for Ventura s kids. Patrick s first major fundraiser as CEO was the 20th annual Garden Party on May 19 at the Pierpont Inn, where 250 guests enjoyed food and drinks from local restaurants, bakeries, wineries, breweries and confectioners. The party also included a silent auction featuring a variety of unique gifts as well as musical entertainment from the Count Lorenzo Band. It was a big success, Patrick reports. We had 40 vendors this year and they all said they wanted to come back next year, so that s a great sign for next year. Cowboys and Cowgirls in Carpinteria Raise $100,000 Page 2 Harrison Industries is a Power of One partner for the Boys & Girls Club of Ventura. Ralph and Jenny Harrison and their guests and I had a great time sampling all the wonderful food. We always look forward to this special event that helps provide vital programs for our youth. The Carpinteria Boys & Girls Club put out a Wanted poster for Cowboys and Cowgirls for its 29th annual Auction and Dinner on May 18. About 300 Cowboys and Cowgirls many of them dressed in Stetson hats, blue jeans and boots attended the fundraiser at the Carpinteria B&GC clubhouse. It couldn t have been a more beautiful evening, and the prime rib and chicken dinners were delicious. Harrison Industries is proud Continued on page 3

3 Page 3 Cowboys and Cowgirls in Carpinteria Raise $100,000- continued from page 2 to be a sponsor and several family members were on hand for this event that also featured more than 300 silent and 16 live auction items. Jamie Collins of the Carpinteria B&GC reports that this year s auction and dinner raised about $100,000 for a great cause Carpinteria s kids. Bids for Kids Auction in Camarillo Raises $80,000 Orthodontic care. A week s stay in Antigua. A week s stay in a luxury home in Mammoth. A shopping spree at the Camarillo Premium Outlets. These are some of the unique items that went to the highest bidder at the Bids for Kids annual auction May 4 at the Las Posas Country Club, benefiting the Boys & Girls Club of Camarillo. Over 225 community members, including a dozen or so Harrisons, attended the event that raised about $80,000 for the club. Bill Locker, President and CEO of the B&GCC, called the auction a great success. He said the money would be used to fund programs for Camarillo kids as well as to purchase a badly needed stove and ice maker for the clubhouse kitchen. The B&GCC s next major fundraiser will be its annual golf tournament at Las Posas Country Club on Sept. 16. Break out your clubs and come join the fun! For more information, call the club at Fillmore Courtyard the Perfect Setting for Taste of the Valley The weather was perfect for the 8th annual Taste of the Valley celebration on April 6 that benefited the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clara Valley. More than 200 people, including a table full of Harrison family members, attended this wonderful event held in Fillmore s City Hall Courtyard. The benefit raised over $8,000 for B&GCSCV, a Positive Place for Kids that serves thousands of children in Continued on page 4

Dave Wareham, a Ventura County Sheriff s captain, did a great job as Master of Ceremonies. There was fine wine, delicious food and lovely music. What more could you want on a warm spring day? 19 th Ventura Music Festival is Full of Vivacity Vivacity was the aptly-named theme of the 19th Ventura Music Festival that ran May 3 to 11. It featured a number of stunning concert performances that turned Ventura into a cultural Mecca for the entire week. They included jazz-classical pianist Eldar Djangirov, whom the late jazz great Dave Brubeck called a genius beyond most young people I ve heard and classical guitarist Petrit Ceku, a Serbian who won the gold medal at the prestigious 2012 Parkening International Guitar Competition. What s amazing about these two is how accomplished they are at such a young age: Djangirov is 26 and Ceku is 28. You will be hearing from them for years to come! Another highlight was the high-energy performance of the Count Basie Orchestra at the Majestic Ventura Theater. William Count Basie created his famous swing-blues orchestra in 1935 during the big-band era. Basie died in 1984, but the musicians he groomed became his successors, and the group continues to tour, record and collect accolades. The current conductor is drummer-composer Dennis Mackrel. Vocalist Carmen Bradford performed on two Grammy-winning albums with the Basie Orchestra in the 1980s and now has a solo career. Harrison Industries has been a major sponsor of the Ventura Music Festival from the beginning and it gives me much pride to be on the advisory committee of this fantastic cultural event. I m already looking forward to 2014 s festival!

5 67th Ojai Music Festival to Focus on American Music and Artists Harrison Industries is proud to be a longtime sponsor of the Ojai Music Festival, a dynamic convergence of music, artists and audience in the Ojai Valley. The 67th annual festival, set for June 6-9 at Libbey Bowl, will explore the musical interests and celebrate artistic collaborations of this year s music director, noted American choreographer Mark Morris, whose programming focuses on American artists and American music. Morris, the first dancer/choreographer to serve as the festival s music director, has won numerous awards recognizing his contributions to the arts, including a MacArthur Fellowship and the prestigious Leonard Bernstein Lifetime Achievement Award for the Elevation of Music in Society. Page 5 Programming focuses on music that Morris champions and loves, including the music of Lou Harrison, John Cage, Henry Cowell, Charles Ives and John Luther Adams. Joining Morris in Ojai will be his Mark Morris Dance Group and the MMDG Music Ensemble, as well as long-time collaborators including jazz 2 trio The Bad Plus (recognized by Rolling Stone magazine as about as badass as highbrow can get ), pianist/organist Colin Fowler, the American String Quartet, and the percussion ensemble red fish blue fish.
