1 Harrisons Celebrate 80 th Anniversary at Chamber Mixers Page 1 Join us in celebrating our 80 th anniversary! Harrison Industries is sponsoring a number of Chamber of Commerce mixers in the coming months, and in honor of our co-founders E.J. and Myra Harrison, we re donating all proceeds to the Boys & Girls Clubs and other local charities in the cities we serve. The first mixer was in Fillmore in August; more on that later. The next one we re sponsoring, the Ventura Chamber s mixer on Thursday, Sept. 27, is particularly special for us, since it s being held in the nearly-completed E.J. Harrison Family Youth Center in Saticoy. The address is Violeta Street and festivities run from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Join us for food, fun, networking and door prizes. Come also to check out the new youth center that replaces the Boys & Girls Club of Ventura s former Saticoy clubhouse. The new facility features a separate technology area, teen room, learning center, kitchen, art room, office, lobby, multipurpose room and game room that children in Saticoy will enjoy for years to come. At the August mixer, the Fillmore Chamber of Commerce honored Harrison Industries as its Business of the Quarter. More than 100 people attended the event at the Santa Clara Valley Boys & Girls Club s Fillmore clubhouse that also served as an anniversary party. All three Harrison brothers Ralph, Jim and Myron along with a number of their family members and Harrison employees were on hand for the fun. 2 United Way s 8th Community Spirit Awards is Sept. 20 Working Together Page 2 United Way of Ventura County is celebrating its 67th year of service by honoring those who share its vision of creating lasting positive change in our community. Four individuals, one organization and one company will receive special recognition for outstanding community service and for upholding the legacy of the three individuals who founded United Way of Ventura County back in 1945 Milton M. Teague, Roy Pinkerton and Douglas Shively at the Spirit of Community Partnership Awards event on Thursday, Sept. 20. It begins at 11 a.m. at the Serra Center, 5205 Upland Road in Camarillo. Harrison Industries is a proud sponsor of this special luncheon that also will honor the United Way s Top Ten corporate partners, volunteers, leadership givers and supporters. Santa Paula Chamber s Moonlight at the Ranch Gets Scary Looking for some scary fun? Look no further than the Santa Paula Chamber of Commerce s Moonlight at the Ranch VI: Creatures of the Night! celebration on Saturday, Sept. 22, benefiting the Santa Paula Police & Fire Foundation. Historic Limoneira Ranch in the Santa Clara Valley will be transformed into a House of Horrors for this spooky evening of fun that begins with a cocktail hour a Bloody Mary, anyone? at 6 p.m. At 7 o clock guests will pass on to the feasting. More than 40 fabulous regional restaurants will offer tastings of fine cuisine every zombie and goblin will love. Feel like dancing on a grave? At 8 p.m. there will be monster mashing with entertainment by that ghoulishly great band Men on the Moon, who will show once and for all whatever happened to the Transylvania Twist. Come dressed to kill, or come as yourself. Either way, I guarantee you ll have a devilishly good time. And you also will be providing muchneeded supplemental financial support for the Santa Paula Police and Fire Departments. 3 Page 3 Carp-A-Cabana on Sept. 8 Benefits Carpinteria Students The Carpinteria Education Foundation continues to support students in Carpinteria and Summerland public schools with its annual art fundraising event, Carp-A-Cabana, on Saturday, September 8, at the BEGA/US facility in Carpinteria at 1000 BEGA Way. This lively event begins at 4 p.m. and features silent and live auctions with refreshments sponsored by Island Brewery beer, Mojito bars sponsored by Wilson & Pettine LLP, an hors d oeuvre reception, and music by local band The Rincons. Proceeds from this event directly benefit all students in the Carpinteria Unified School District. Larry Powell is the featured artist this year, providing original artwork for the invitations and promotional posters for the event. See you at the Carp-A-Cabana! Future Harrison Industries Employee? Like most young boys, Trevor Craven, grandson of Camarillo Vice Mayor Charlotte Craven, enjoys playing with trucks. As you can see, among his favorites is his trash truck. Every Wednesday Charlotte and her husband Mike join Trevor as he diligently follows his neighborhood trash truck driver to make sure he does everything just right.

4 It was a Hot Time at Camarillo Country Festival & Chili Cookoff Working Together Revel in Rotary Club of TO Sunrise s Oktoberfest on Sept Page 4 Camarillo was the place to be for locals who wanted to get away for Labor Day but not too far away. The fourth annual Camarillo Country Festival & Championship Chili Cookoff was held on Sept. 3 at the historic Camarillo Ranch and it benefitted a most worthy cause: Camarillo Hospice. There was lots more than just delicious chili. The Pleasant Valley Lions Club held a barbecue with plenty of beer, wine and soft drinks. There also was a Classic Car Display and Texas Hold Em Poker Tournament as well as a special fun and games zone for the kids. And, of course, there was great country music, courtesy of the Tim Buley Band and Caught Red Handed. Harrison Industries was a proud sponsor of this fun-filled community event that benefits Camarillo Hospice, which does such a wonderful job of providing compassionate care and comfort for those nearing the end of their lives as well as providing loving support for their family members and friends. Harrison Industries is thrilled to be a sponsor of the 26 th annual Ventura County Oktoberfest that will be held on Saturday and Sunday, Sept , at the Camarillo Airport, 455 Aviation Drive. Gates open at 11 a.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. on Sunday. Come celebrate Bavarian culture. Enjoy beer? Over 10 breweries will be on hand to offer their frosty ales. There s also going to be great food, live music, contests and prizes and even vintage airplane flights. Brings the kids! Scavenging and Dumpster Diving is Illegal and Costly Scavenging from your residential curbside trash and recycling containers or dumpster diving from commercial containers and roll-off bins is illegal and should be reported. No Trash It s not just homeless people who engage in dumpster diving. Dumpster diving includes small illegal businesses set up with speciallyrigged trucks to steal tons of cardboard stacked 8 feet in the bed. It s a racket with people going out every day where there s lots of cardboard. I have seen and reported them to the police. Another concern about scavengers and dumpster divers is they may be looking for more than just recyclables. They also might seek or find documents containing personal information like Social Security and credit card numbers. You can help prevent identity theft by shredding documents with personal information before placing them in your recycling containers. You may not realize it, but scavengers searching in Harrison bins for aluminum cans, glass bottles, plastic containers and other recyclable materials can cost you money in the long run since recyclables that we collect are used to help off-set our service costs. You should not approach people caught scavenging. Instead, call your police department s non-emergency number.
