He chose to put this experience into action and two years ago started producing a rodeo school to benefit the Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund. Wes gathers some of the top PRCA bareback and Saddle Bronc Riders and brings them to Stace Smith s Ranch in Malakoff, Texas to offer up and coming cowboys an unprecedented opportunity to learn from the Champions. The school has raised $13,000 in the first two years for JCCF! Upcoming Events 5 PENDLETON ROUND UP FOUNDATION GOLF TOURNAMENT Gregory Roland, Joe Rosenberg, Bruce Mulvany and David Karnes relax after their victory at the Round-Up Memorial Golf Tournament at Wildhorse Golf Course On September 11. East Oregonian Staff photo by Bill Andrus Team Roper Byron Wilkerson and teammates Blaine Linaweaver, Kory Koontz and David Key claimed the low-net first-place prize with a 49 at the Pendleton Round-Up Foundation Memorial Golf Tournament at Wildhorse Resort Golf Course. The Pendleton Whisky-sponsored team of David Karnes, Gregory Roland, Joe Rosenberg and Bruce Mulvany shot a 57 to win the low gross. Rosenberg of Pendleton said he has played all but one of the 17 Round-Up Foundation tournaments, which contribute the proceeds to the Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund. It's fun and it's such a great deal," said Rosenberg, who received his first-place prize from the Round-Up and Happy Canyon courts. The tournaments over the years have raised approximately $80,000 for the Crisis Fund, said tournament director Nels Nelson and they expect the 2006 tournament to net about $5000 for JCCF! The tournament was established in 1990 in memory of plane crash victims Mike Currin, Dave P. Smith, David Bown and Randy Dierlam, who died with pilot Bob Card on a rodeo trip to Alberta. 6 Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund Cindy Schonholtz Program Manager 101 Pro Rodeo Drive Colorado Springs, CO Phone: Fax: It s a hand up, not a hand out. JUSTIN COWBOY CRISIS FUND With no guaranteed salaries or injured reserve provisions in the sport of rodeo, these professional athletes are often left with no place to turn when faced with serious, sidelining injuries and the accompanying financial hardship. Recognizing that serious injuries can be traumatic enough without the additional burden of financial worries, the Justin Boot Company formed a partnership with the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) and the Women's Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA) in 1989 to establish the Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund (JCCF). The JCCF s premise is to lend a helping hand to professional rodeo athletes and their families in the event of catastrophic injuries. The fund fills the void of financial hardship when the inevitable serious injury interferes with the careers of those who have dedicated their lives to the sport. Assistance awards are based on the severity of injury, the number of dependents and the applicant's financial situation. The Fund also takes into consideration the individual's involvement in and/or contribution to the sport of professional rodeo. Unique among today's numerous charitable organizations, the Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund stands above the rest by dedicating 100% of all contributions received for disbursement to eligible applicants. This uncommon practice for a charitable organization is made possible by the joint commitment of the Justin Boot Company and the PRCA, which underwrite all administrative costs associated with managing the JCCF, leaving all monies received through contributions (and as investment earnings) to serve their intended purpose.
