1 LOS PADRES TRAIL RIDERS NEWSLETTER BOARD OF DIRECTORS PRESIDENT Anita Klinger VICE PRESIDENT Pamela Webber SECRETARY Karen Wheeler TREASURER Barbara Underwood gmail.com DIRECTORS-AT-LARGE Maureen Peatross (Membership) Barbara Wolf (Parades) Lou Dartanner (Newsletter) Barbara Hinman (Rides) Otis Calef GENERAL MEETINGS LPTR meets on the third Thursday of every oddnumbered month at the Santa Barbara Humane Society s Education Center on Overpass Road (enter at the rear, around the curve from the main entrance). If you d like to join us for the potluck at 6:30 p.m., bring something to share, place setting and drink for yourself. The meeting at 7:00 p.m. and guests always welcome. AUGUST 2015 LPTR MEETING THURSDAY, JULY 16TH At our July meeting, Agapito De La Cruz of A&A Equestrian in Santa Ynez spoke about various aspects of working with horses. We welcomed all questions from a full house of attendees. Personally, I was delighted at Agapito s way of bringing attention back to basic steps of communication with the horse and thinking in terms of one step at a time progress. Agapito s background was in dressage, but he works with riders and horses in all styles and breeds. His basic format is patience and understanding. One step at a time progress between horse and rider becomes part of their overall ability. He describes his goal as teaching horse and rider in ways to make their overall experience with their horse enjoyable and fun. The rider needs to be able to focus on the next step for the horse and how the rider can correctly ask for it. Agapito talked about trail riding, trail obstacles (Working Equitation), the horse show arena, and just plain riding. He emphasized being focused on what you are doing, being patient, and spending plenty of time in the saddle (including times of just standing around and waiting). At the website you can read more about what Agapito and his wife Adrianna offer at the facility in Santa Ynez. See page 2 for LPTR Trail Ride Saturday, August 22, at Ellwood Bluff. 2 LPTR TRAIL RIDE SATURDAY, AUGUST 22 ELLWOOD BLUFF We have a trail ride planned for Saturday, August 22 nd, at Ellwood Bluff. It is mostly flat and easy to ride. We will have an option to also have a short ride on the beach, tide permitting. Please come at 9:30 a.m. and we will start riding at 10 a.m. Please RSVP by August 19 th by calling to get directions for parking. Please bring a lunch and a snack to share. Nancy Moore will lead the ride. Hope to see you on the 22 nd. Barbara Hinman PRESIDENT S MESSAGE We are fortunate to have such nice trails in our area. It is to the credit of the Santa Barbara Trails Council that much work has gone into economically and politically stabilizing the trail resources that we have, not to mention the hard work that volunteers put into clearing brush and seeing that the footing is reasonable, and letting us know if there is a problem. Always remember that Vie Obern s vision of the Coastal Trail set things in motion a long time ago. What a grand lady to have given so much to our equestrian community. We have some LTPR members working together on a ride committee, and we look forward to reports and pictures of areas close to home and how easy or difficult each ride area is for you and your horse. Hand in hand with trail rides, I seem to have become enraptured with learning about the Trail Obstacle venue. Long ago there was nothing slower than watching a trail class at a show, and I admit I stopped watching. Now it is an exciting and entertaining event for both riders and spectators and demands a level of expertise to ride the course correctly. I watched a Trail class at the Fiesta Show that takes place at Earl Warren along with the rodeo. The course included a very long rope gate that required good judgment by the rider on how they would turn without the horse stepping on the long rope. Dragging a log, dismounting and picking up all four feet, and dropping the bridle were among the elements. I thought to myself, I have to stand on a mounting block to bridle my Friesian ok, I d better figure out how to get his nose on the ground We each have our own incentives and expectations with our horse partners. I hope you are all having a good summer hopefully some rains will come soon. HELPFUL HINTS Ticked Off A Step-by-Step Removal Process By Casey L. Pacheco, DVM Removing a tick from your horse can be challenging but necessary, since some ticks can transmit harmful diseases to both you and your horse. There are many folklore remedies to remove ticks that might seem simple to do, but should be avoided. The goal is to remove the tick as quickly and safely as possible. Here are a few easy steps to follow when removing a tick from your horse. 1. Always wear [disposable] gloves to protect you from contracting diseases through micro-abrasions on your skin or mucus membranes. 2. To prepare the site where the tick is located, clean the area with a disinfectant such as povidone iodine, chlorhexidine, and/or isopropyl alcohol. 3. Using tweezers, grasp the tick as close to the horse s skin as possible and apply even pressure while pulling straight out. Try not to twist or pull at an angle. Try not to twist or pull at an angle so the tick is removed in its entirety, as it is common to break off and leave the mouthparts within the skin. 4. Once the tick is removed, clean the site once again with disinfectant and place the tick in a jar of isopropyl alcohol. Never dispose of the tick by crushing it between your fingers, lighting it on fire, or flushing it down the toilet. After removing your gloves, be sure to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. 5. Should there be any question of part of the tick being left behind, be sure to check the site daily for infection. Signs of infection include redness, swelling, and/or discharge from the site. If this is the case, do not attempt to remove the embedded parts by digging with tweezers. For further instructions on proper removal, please call your veterinarian. 2 LPTR Newsletter, August 2015

3 THANKS, LPTR! From Los Padres Forest Association Hello and Greetings Los Padres Trail Riders, For those whom I have not met, my name is Bryan Conant. I am the Director of the Los Padres Forest Association. Last year we were fortunate to have received a trails grant from LPTR in order to work on a particularly nasty slide section of trail along the North Cold Spring Trail. According to the Forest Service, this slide has been a problem along the North Cold Spring Trail for over 20 years. The slide was impassable to stock and had gotten so bad in recent years that even hikers were turning around at the sight of the slide. The good news is that thanks in large part to the grant you awarded the LPTA, we were able to get 20 volunteers out there a fix the slide. We hosted a two day project based at Mono Camp and had a great time working the trails. Thank you again for your support. If anything else is needed from the LPFA in regards to finalizing the grant, please let me know. And of course, if we can help with anything, don t hesitate to ask. Looking forward to working with you again in the future. FIESTA PARADE UPDATE Barbara Wolf, Parade Chair On August 7 th, LPTR had nine members riding in the Fiesta Parade: Sherry Baker, Stacie and George Anthes, Jeff Bruner, Carol Cocchiarella, Jane Lodas, Rebecca Player, and Ted and Mary Helen Nunez (who rode in a carriage). While we had no issues, it seemed like the parade itself had a lot of hold ups. Stopping so much does make for anxious horses. That s usually the hard part: hurry up and wait. As Parade Chair, it has been a long-time policy to pre-parade check dresses, which I failed to do this time, and which did not meet our guidelines. In the future, all dresses used for the first time will need to be approved in person by me or my appointee. Anyone not meeting the standards who show up will not be allowed to ride. LPTR PARADE UPDATE Barbara Wolf, Parade Chair Here are the rest of the 2015 parades we will do. On Saturday, Sept. 19 th, is the Solvang Danish Days Parade. We wear our LPTR outfits for this parade, which starts at 2:30 p.m. We line up on First Street between Molle Way and Elverhoy by 2:00. This is a good first-time parade. Get your prequalifier parades in for Fiesta. On Saturday, Oct. 17 th will be the Los Olivos Day in the Country. This is a fun Halloween parade and we decorate our horses and ourselves for this parade. A great crowd-pleaser. This is not a good first time parade, as you are close to the people. Then on Saturday, Dec. 5 th, we do the Solvang Christmas Parade and decorate our horses in traditional Christmas attire. We wear our LPTR outfits along with a Santa hat. We get ready at the Old Mission in Solvang and the parade winds around through town. A lot of fun as the crowd usually really gets in the mood for this parade. This is another good first-time parade. REMEMBER: IT IS A MUST TO RSVP IN A TIMELY MANNER TO THE PARADE CHAIR FOR ALL PARADES. Barbara, MONTECITO TRAILS FOUNDATION ANNUAL BBQ FUNDRAISER Save the date! The Montecito Trails Foundation will host their annual BBQ Fundraiser on Saturday, September 19 th. See flyer on page 5. LPTR Newsletter, August
