3 OCTORARO ANGUS Sustainable Genetics Sustainable Agriculture The future is now The past year has been one of changes for the Wylies. The last week of December 2014, they moved to their smaller retirement farm and house. Sherrill was anxious for the move. Sam was not so sure. However, he adjusted quickly and now even admits that he likes the new home. So, their 20 th sale will be held at the New Paris, PA farm, in the barn no tent this year. Also new this year -there will not be a conference line for bidding. Plans are under way to conduct the sale via the internet through DV Auctions. The Breezewood property is listed with Bedford County Real Estate. They make the trip every other day to check the cattle. Please note their new address and phone numbers listed in this catalog. They do not wish to lose contact with any of you. Sadly, 2015 saw the loss of Jim Reid. Jim frequently rode shotgun with Sam on trips and about town. Jim loved Babe and Sissy and they visited him in the nursing home. All Sam wanted for Christmas 2014 was a puppy. Sissy, their new Bernese Mountain dog has claimed Jim s seat in the truck. Babe and Sissy have many friends from riding around with Sam. They also participated in the local Hospital Day petting zoo. This year there is no rare, unique semen offered as Sam s cache has diminished. To continue meeting his goal of providing purebred, registered, work and wear Angus genetics to his customers he has elected to use the remaining semen for invitro embryo production with proven foundation cows. Frequently, he hears from customers that their cattle are too big, bad footed and suffering from defects within the breed and they want to get back to the long lived, trouble free and maternal efficiency Angus. Sam feels embryo work is the best way for supply to meet the demand for this type of genetics. Sam has been fortunate through the years to have some of the best breeders in the nation mentor him. They instilled in him the values and goals he has used to breed cattle for over 45 years. His main goals continue to be preserving the maternal goodness and purity of the Angus breed and mentoring the next generation of likeminded young breeders. Sam and EM Brook Angus have continued doing invitro embryo work at TransOva in Boonsboro, MD. Being relative close enables them to do all of the superovulation work at home. The 90 day pregnant oocyte aspiration procedure is utilized to keep the donors on a regular breeding schedule. The advantages of embryo work eliminate the high cost of live animal freight and provide for a calf to be born in, rather than adapting, to the environment in which it will live. Purchasing embryos provides opportunities for buyers to enhance their existing cattle or jump start a new herd without the costly freighting of live animals. It also eliminates the number of years required to refine the buyers own breeding lines. Sam and Rick have already invested the time to test cattle lines that will work in the real world. Both brood herds have never been hot housed or pampered. The donors are not great cows or power cows. 1

4 They are just honest, hardworking, properly bred cows that get the job done in sync with their natural environment. Both, unique reversed sorted female and non-sexed embryos are offered this year to share the Octoraro and Em Brook gene pools. Sherrill adjusted well following her retirement in January She was recently approved to do substitute school nursing in the local district. Sam has survived the retirement and is thrilled to have an official gate opener and someone to boss around since Jim is gone. She enjoys having more time on the farm, paying attention to the health status of the cattle and continues to work on the landscaping. Sam continues to indulge Sherrill and Beth on the tanbark trail. Several years ago Sherrill bought a Guernsey heifer. Bella produced a daughter, Bailey who will freshen this fall and Buford retained for breeding. In keeping with their Angus breeding philosophies, Bella is small in stature and continues to have a terrific udder and she scored Excellent on 10/14/14. Beth s Misty Meadows Guernsey cattle continue to do well on the national show circuit with multiple wins in saw the pinnacle of her efforts when Misty Meadows Levi Suede was Grand Champion of the All- American Diary Show in Harrisburg, PA and the World Dairy Expo in Madison, WI. Suede also had the distinction of being the Best Bred and Owned and Best Udder at both shows and is the fifth generation in a winning line of homebred cattle. Her ET sister Misty Meadows Levi Sienna stood next to Suede at several shows. They were Intermediate and Reserve Intermediate Champions at Madison and first place Produce of Dam at both national shows. Sienna was Grand Champion at the Bedford County Fair as Suede stayed home. Beth and her fiancée Chris Reichard, work hard to bred and raise quality Guernsey cattle as well as their Octoraro Epiphany Angus herd. Otherwise, you will see few changes to this introduction to Octoraro Angus. A third generation Angus breeder, Sam has carved a niche in the competitive world of beef cattle breeding. After serving in Vietnam, Sam traveled throughout the U.S., visiting Angus breeders, selling semen and doing sale preparation work before starting his own breeding program in Chester County, PA. In 1990, Sam moved the cattle to a rugged, 153-acre farm in Mattie, near Breezewood. The grassy hillsides are ideal for intensive rotational grazing and the woods provide winter shelter. Hay from neighboring farms supports the 150 head of Angus through the winters. Seventy to eighty calves are born each year through natural cover and artificial insemination. After moving to Bedford County, Sam met Sherrill, a local woman with a Guernsey dairy background. The first public sale of Octoraro Angus females was in Sam and Sherrill married in They have worked together producing a unique sustainable herd of pure pedigree Angus cattle. The Wylies breed cattle from a different angle than most breeders today. The cattle survive on pasture and hay year-round without supplementation from corn, other grains or concentrates, and their stock are derived from pure foundation bloodlines. They value traits, such as maternal efficiency and longevity, which they believe has been lost in many modern breeding programs that emphasize meat production at the expense of these characteristics. Sam and Sherrill got back to the basics and raise cattle that 2

5 thrive on low-input, sustainable grassland farming. They use minimal fuel and equipment to process the hay. Their breeding practices have found a wide market, with their time-tested seed stock sought by Angus breeders throughout the United States and Canada. They are breeding producer-friendly cattle for farmers who want to get back to the pure, breeder-type Angus of long ago. Tallgrass Beef Company Preferred Genetics added Octoraro Angus to their list of acceptable genetics in This distinction is attributed to the Octoraro Angus cattle being bred for maternal efficiency and longevity. In 2008, the Pa. Angus Association and the Pa. Cattlemen s Association named them Seed Stock Producer of the Year. Years ago Jim Lingle, while at Wye Plantation, mentored Sam. The Wylies purchased the rare, unique gene pool of the Newport Farm Wye based cattle in They have not made radical changes in these cows, but have bred them to be more consistent and predictable by utilizing semen from the old time tested Wye bulls. Some of the progeny of these animals are offered this year. This type of disciplined breeding program enables the Wylies to share both the Wye genetics and their own homebred gene pool. Years ago, Sam coined the term, Genetic Seed Saver, as the title for their sale. The term sums up what Octoraro Angus is all about; preserving the original, traditional type of Angus cattle. They have not perused the modern, high tech, scientific improvement process that so many have engaged in here in the USA. Sam says that breeding cattle is an art, which should be used for genetic damage control. They refer to their style of breeding as pure-breeder type. They do not expect their cattle to be everything to everybody. They have concentrated on the cow, maternal efficiency and least cost production, rather than the terminal growth and carcass traits that are often antagonistic to what they are trying to accomplish. The Wylies take their job as your seedstock supplier seriously. They do not continuously outcross their gene pool for bigger, better numbers. Through line breeding and tight breeding, they feel that they can breed more predictability, consistency and prepotency into their female lines. With the turmoil surrounding genetic defects in the Angus breed the past few years, and the possibility of more coming, they are pleased that there have been no defects found within their gene pool. They believe that their job is to design and create females that will work for the long haul, up to twenty years of age. Sam often jokingly states, There is only one thing we need more of in Angus cattle and that is more Angus. For the seventh year, we welcome consignments from Octoraro Epiphany, New Paris, PA, and Em Brook Farm, Schellsburg, PA. These cattle reflect pure breeder type genetics developed under low input production models. Many of these cattle descend from cows purchased from Octoraro Angus and continue to carry the same great bloodlines. We have purchased cattle back, including the 404 cow that sold to Sinclair Cattle Company for $10,000 years ago. 44 EMBRYOS SIRES RR Rito 707 ( ) was a bull out of the Rolling Rock program, an Eliminator bred bull. 707 was the fountain head of the Rito line of cattle that have accelerated growth and moderate frames. ABS bull, Pioneer Seed Corn Company and Jorgensen owned RR 707. He left a tremendous legacy behind and semen is extremely scarce. We sold one unit of semen for $6500 through a previous sale. These embryos are out of a really grand ladylike cow. We are offering two more of her embryos again this year. Direct descendants of 707 are extremely rare and this is a terrific opportunity for the smart buyer to purchase offspring from the unique 707 bloodline. PBC 707 IM FO203 ( ) is a good son of RR 707. Of all the 707 sons he may have the greatest ability to sire daughters with range adaptability, longevity that are real brood cows. Several of his daughters have been famous within the beef industry. Our old 860 daughter, Octoraro Hammer s full sister, is an PBC 707 FO203 daughter. 860 is still living at 17 years of age and will freshen soon. Fabron of Wye ( ) is a 1960 model bull that was massive in stature. He did a lot of things correctly in his progeny. Jim Lingle was Sam s mentor while at Wye Plantation. Fabron was his Masterpiece. The goodness of the Wye program was pretty much built on Fabron s genetics. He transmitted extremely well. His dam was a Gaird daughter and she was quite a cow. You can line breed to Fabron without any negative results. We still have a little semen to be used invitro. Fabron was used this fall, invitro on two cows. Produced 9 female embryos. Lodge of Wye ( GDF) was owned by Wye and Black Watch. He was an excellent semen producer. Lodge was a big, strong growth factor type bull. We have always thought the world of Lodge and we are offering multiple batches of embryos sired by him. All of the 20 Lodge embryos are reverse sorted for heifer progeny: some will be straight Wye. Churchill of Wye ( ) was an impressive bull that was a Lodge of Wye son. Churchill s dam had the distinction of probably being the greatest cow to ever walk the pastures at Wye Plantation. She was the Colleen cow, a Gaird daughter. She was a big voluminous brood cow that transmitted extremely well. She has two full sib sons, sired by Fabron: Columbus and Corbin. Churchill was her very last son. He is calving ease and he transmits her maternal goodness. Two lots of Churchill sired 13 embryos are being offered in our 20 th sale. Again, an excellent opportunity for you to buy into Wye genetics. Octoraro Emulation 310 ( ) is our old standby bull. He is an E31 son, out of our Viking cow. He is the momma cow maker for us. His offspring consistently exhibit maternal efficiency, have fancy udders, and are in sync with nature. We do have a good quantity of his semen on hand. We are satisfied with the job he does for us. Producing 310 embryos is a more economical way to share the goodness of the Octoraro genetics with our customers. Produced 20 female embryos. N Bar Emulation 5522 ( ) is another Emulation 31 son. ABS sold semen on this bull is a real stock bull and the sire of EXT. His daughters have very pleasing udders. He fits into our maternal program very well. We still have a supply of 5522 semen left to be used in our invitro program. A total of 16 sexed heifer embryos will be offered. These 5522 embryos will be the kind to build upon. Pastor of Wye ( ) is a Lodge son of the great Valour cow. He is another real momma cow maker bull that produces cows that are efficient with quality udders. We have a limited cache of his semen and it will be used sparingly in future invitro work. Octoraro Vikulation 301 ( ) is another home raised bull and we really like his progeny. He has moved on to Nebraska cow country. However, we do have a good supply of his semen and will continue to use him both A-I and invitro. Nine frozen sexed heifer embryos will be offered. Here, again, is a chance to obtain Octoraro genetics in embryo form and save on the fright bill. Plus, the heifers are born at your farm and do not have to transition to a new environment. Qualton of Wye ( ) is a Lonestar son. He is out of the grand Prince daughter, She may be the most efficient Wye cow and she transmitted extremely well. His daughters will make momma cows. Qualton was sold to Shoshone Angus in WY. Larry dominated the Midland Test by putting the growth factor into his cattle. To concentrate on the cow side of the factor Qualton enabled him to do that. They were very milky, with fancy udders, not real big, but real working cows. The Shoshone maternal program was built on the strengths of Qualton s cow making abilities. We still have a little Qualton semen left and will continue to use it for invitro work. We will be offering two sets of these straight Wye embryos. Produced 21 IVF sexed females. 42
