3 Welcome to our 18th Annual Bull Sale! There are more places to purchase a bull than places to fill your pickup with fuel. We thank you for taking time to read this catalog and consider our program. Our program is a no-nonsense approach to raising registered Angus cattle in a commercial cattle environment. Culling is year around. The cows are pregnant in the fall or they go to town-just one calving season. Cows calve in a river hills pasture and are expected to protect and nurture that calf to a lucrative weaning weight. No creep feeders allowed. Our weaning weights are much heavier this year! The feed salesman says it s because of the mineral that we used. The American Angus Association explains that by using EPD s we ve improved our herd. The semen suppliers give credit to the genetics and the John Deere dealer would say it s the tractor! The truth is that we FINALLY had a wet spring and good grazing throughout the summer and fall. THAT S what environment testing is all about. Cattle that survive the tough years will THRIVE in the good years. Ever wonder how some outfits have the same heavy weaning weights year after year? We are excited about this year s set of bulls-not because they are better than ever before- but because we know that the cows behind them have been TESTED in the past. Among 140 contemporaries he was an outlier, indexing 120 for both weaning and yearling weights. His first 27 calves all came unassisted ACC from first-calf heifers. Very limited semen is available from Ma & Pa Angus. REGISTERED OR PUREBRED? You may notice some of our bulls do not record (Expected Progeny Differences). These individuals are purebred Angus but cannot be registered because of the uncertainty in their sire parentage a few generations back. Years ago before parentage tests were available whenever we were not ABSOLUTELY certain if a calf was from AI or natural service, that calf was not papered and deemed purebred commercial. We have kept a few of these replacements each year since our beginning. These purebred cows and calves are recorded at the American Angus Association and ratioed just as the registered ones. For our customers protection, they are also tested for any genetic defects that the AAA may warn us of. Today, with parentage testing available, we can use multiple sires in a pasture and still be certain of sire parentage. Seventy percent of our herd is registered and thirty percent is purebred. They run as one herd with no consideration for either group. This purebred commercial group has proven very useful to us as we introduced new AI sires into our herd. New sires were first tried in this group and only when they had proven themselves were they used on the registered cows. In summing it up, the purebred individuals do not come with that are sometimes useful. But we feel that we can still know what to expect from their progeny by using birth weights, weaning weights, feed tests, carcass ultrasound, and by living with them 365 days a year! 5

We had been searching for a name for our registered Angus herd for over a month when we went to New Underwood to spend time with Deb s parents. The next morning over a large breakfast Deb s dad, Bob Bruner (Bruner Trucking), was telling fishing stories when he told about staying at a Mom and Pop motel. I asked just what is a Mom and Pop business? Bob replied, Well, a mom and pop motel is usually a clean, well kept little motel that s run by a couple without much help.
