It s hard to believe that a year has come and gone. It seems like just yesterday we had our last bull sale. As we look back at the past year, it s become even clearer the need for cattle that work for the ranch, and make the ranch profitable. After hearing these comments repeatedly the past few years, it s made me sit down and think about it. What s causing this and what can we do to fix it? In looking at the whole picture, here are some things that I observed. In ranching, we get so busy working every day, that we don t get a chance to sit back and look at the whole picture. We should take time to sit back and see what is making the ranch profitable, or what s keeping the ranch from being profitable. One way is to keep records on our cowherd, which cows are making the ranch profitable each year, and which ones are not. Yearling size of our replacement heifers versus mature size maybe our cows are getting too big? What is our optimum weight for our cowherd in our environment? Remember that not all environments are the same. Find what is most profitable for your ranch. At yearling time, a replacement heifer is roughly 65% of her mature weight. I was at a female sale this past fall (one of the biggest registered Angus operations in the US), and as the females came in the ring, they would comment about them. On the bred heifers they were using it as a selling point that they weighed between 1,200 and 1,300 pounds at a year of age. As I was sitting there listening to this, I thought, When is it going to be enough? It s human nature to think that bigger is better, but when will we be satisfied? If those heifers weighed 1,200-1,300 pounds at a year of age, they would weigh between 1,850 and 2,000 pounds as mature cows. At what weight do your cows offer the best returns? The most common answer I get is around 1,150-1,300 pounds, so that at a year of age, your replacement heifers need to be around pounds. I did a little figuring, at a year of age if a heifer weighs 950 pounds, she will mature at over 1,450 pounds. If she weighs 1,050 pounds, she will mature over 1,600 pounds. Like I said, it s something to think about. What is required of a first calf heifer after she calves? She needs to do two things: raise her calf and breed back early. If she is late breeding back after her first calf, typically it takes a few years to get her back in the front of the calving, if ever. If she has the right growth curve (fast early growth and then shut it off), this can happen consistently. If she has an extended growth curve, then she is trying to grow herself, feed her calf, and breed back (hopefully early) at the same time. Something has to give, and she will take care of her requirements first. Either we will get an open in the fall, real late breed back, or a dud of a calf. We know that the females that are the most profitable are

19 the ones that each and every year calve at the front of the herd. An extra 20 days on a calf is a lot when we get ready to sell it in the fall. It can be the difference between a profitable year or not. One thing that I feel is really important when selecting your replacement heifers is to make sure that their mother has calved early each year. I have noticed in our herd that this trait is very heritable and valuable. When we buy our bulls, how long is it before we have daughters in our herds? Do you realize that the bulls you buy this year won t have their first daughters in production for four years? If you keep your bulls for four years, then it will be seven to 10 years before you have six-year-old cows in your herd out of this bull or nine to 12 years later for an eight-year-old cow. One of the points I thought of is that it takes a long time to turn over generations. Another point to think about is that your eight-year-old cows came from bulls that you bought nine to 12 years ago. Do you realize what the average EPDs were nine to 12 years ago and what they are today? Weaning Weight EPDs were mostly around and Yearling Weight EPDs were around Today it s common to see these highly promoted bulls in the range for Weaning and for Yearling Weights. Everyone promotes these spread bulls, do-everything bulls. From what I can see in cow size differences from these bulls, we need to be looking at the whole picture. If you are using them as terminal sires (not keeping any replacement heifers out of them) then it doesn t matter, but if you are using them as maternal sires, it s very important to keep our cow size profitable. Here s a little homework for each of us. Go back and look at the EPDs on the bulls that you bought 10 to 12 years ago, and look at the EPDs on the bulls that you bought in the last few years. IF there is a big difference, study your cowherd and look at the differences in the young cows versus the older ones. As you look at the genetics that we have used, we have continued to use older proven bulls. We know what their strengths and weaknesses are. Remember that a bull is nine to 12 years old before our daughters in production are 8 years old. How many bulls do you see promoted that are of that age? We have never chased the fads, never chased the big EPDs, but rather have focused on the cattle that are balanced. Our cattle are designed for easy calving, explosive early growth, and to leave a great set of replacement females. They have generations of these genetics bred in them. What we can control! There are certain things that we can control and many that we cannot. We cannot control what the market will be and when it will be at its top and bottom. Instead, we need to focus on the issues that we can control

This is only half of the equation because you get the advantage of replacement females. Every good cowboy knows that the good cows always make the ranch money, and the poor ones are the headaches. Have you ever stopped to think how much more time you spend with the poor cattle, than the good ones? The good ones not only take care of themselves, they make the ranch profitable. If you combine this with a bull that is more efficient, you can see the value that a bull can and will add to your bottom line. It always pays to buy the right genetics. Progress can only be made through selecting the right genetics. There is only so much feed that our ranches can produce. The key to making your ranch profitable is buying the right genetics that will affect your bottom line for years to come

In the registered business we can buy semen on any bull that we want, but there are only so many great cows. Our philosophy is to identify and buy these great cows that are backed by generations of highly productive females that have stood the test of time. We then do embryo transplant work on these cows. There is a big difference between a good cow and a great cow. A great breeding bull is known because they stamp their calves. It s the same with a great cow; she should be able to stamp her calves regardless of who the sire is. When we find a cow that does this, we know that she is the kind that we want to have daughters in our herd out of. We can all look at our own herd of cows and identify a few that are great cows. They calve early each year, bring in a big calf at weaning, gentle, with beautiful udders. Then you see that their daughters are doing the same thing. After a few generations, you can identify these great cows. These are the ones that make a ranch profitable. Through embryo transplant on these cows, we are able to get around calves per year out of these cows. The nice thing about them is that they are all full, 3/4, or half brothers. It s the quickest way to put consistency in a cow herd and in a calf crop, by buying bulls that are bred like this. We have seen a tremendous increase in the quality and consistency of our cow herd in only a few short years. This is resulting from the large groups of females that are 1/2, 3/4, and full sisters. To get started, simply go online to and click on the tab titled REGISTER FOR YOUR BUYER S NUMBER. Print the registration form, fill it out and fax it in (817/ ) to Superior Productions with a signature on it. You can also mail it in to the address provided on the form. Upon receipt of this information, Superior will call you with a buyer s number and the bid line phone number that you will use on sale day to place bids over the phone. HOW TO PARTICIPATE AS AN ABSENTEE BUYER We have made preparations to bid and buy livestock through Superior Productions Call or Click-To-Bid service for those unable to attend in person on sale day. Please note that all of the lots in the sale will also be available for viewing online prior to sale day at Click-To-Bid. This is Superior s newest way to buy cattle! Registration is free, but you must become a member of to sign up. Becoming a member is easy - just go to the homepage of and follow the outlined steps to get started. Input your information and select a username and password. You will receive an confirming you are a member.
