18 From the ground up Hubings develop cattle ranches using Sinclair bloodlines Broadus, Mont. Chuck and Charlotte Hubing retired from ranching two years ago after a long tradition of developing cattle operations. I never went to high school, says Chuck. I went to ranching when I got out of the eighth grade. In 1938, Chuck began working as a cowboy for a mere $1 a day, putting in 10 hours or more on horseback in the Montana country to earn his wage. That was the way it worked in the drought, he continued. We started during the drought and went on from there. Getting started We got started all on our own, Chuck says, noting that neither he nor Charlotte inherited a ranch. It is hard to make a start when you are young. It takes a lot of doing to get to the first 100 cows, but we got there, and we made it by ourselves. In 1969, the couple leased their ranch south of Broadus, Mont. on the Powder River, along with several other places. They later purchased the property in When we first bought the ranch, there was no development, and there wasn t much for reservoirs, Charlotte says. It was all artesian wells. In fact, the fellow we bought it from didn t want any farming done there. He wanted it left in its natural state, so we didn t have much for hay land, either. Hubing cattle were branded on the left hip with the family s brand. Developing the property For over 40 years, Charlotte and Chuck ranched in the Powder River area outside Broadus, Mont. Charlotte notes, That Powder River Country will always be special to us. What started as a parcel of property with little to no development transformed over time at the nurturing hands of the Hubing family. The couple improved the water on the ranch by installing pipelines and cross-fenced much of the property to improve grazing. Charlotte notes that, as they developed the water on the ranch, their grazing continued to improve. We established a 3,000-acre wheat allotment, as well, says Charlotte, mentioning that much of their original ranch has been seeded into crested wheatgrass. It s a good ranch with good grazing and good grass. Chuck began his career as a cowboy right out of eighth grade in 1938, working for only $1 a day. By the 1960s, he had developed his own ranch and continued working until 2012.

19 Charlotte notes that they started their ranch with a varied bunch of cattle, but by focusing on improvement, they were able to develop a consistent, strongperforming herd. The cattle raised by Charlotte and Chuck are both resilient and capable of withstanding the tough winters that come to the Powder River Country they ranched in. Mike & Lisa Karrels Inside the cattle The Hubings cattle operation has changed dramatically since they began in the late 60s. When we moved onto the ranch, we had 800 bred heifers, Charlotte explains. They were all types of cattle that we put together. The first year, we calved them out and focused on improvements after that. We tried a little bit of everything, but we always focused on improvement. For the Hubings, the ideal cow is one with both length and depth. The cows need to be able to take care of themselves, if they have to, says Charlotte. Bulls purchased from Sinclair Cattle Company, Inc. played a big role in improving their cattle herd across all of their ranching operations. We ve tried to keep those bloodlines in our herd through the years, Chuck comments. Creating the best Chuck was striving for cattle with depth and increased weaning weights, both of which they were able to achieve through the years. At the same time, they were able to develop cattle that calved easily, gained quickly and bred back each year, which was important to the operation. Easy calving was important to the Hubings, Charlotte notes, saying, Our cows calve on their own out in the fields. They have to be able to take care of themselves. Chuck and Charlotte strive for a deep-bodied cow that can take care of herself. They also worked toward heavier weaning weights, easy calving and easy fleshing ability. Charlotte and Chuck worked side-by-side on their ranch outside Broadus, Mont. for many years, weathering the hard times and enjoying the good moments together. We ve wandered away from those bloodlines a time or two, but we always came right back to it. They were more successful for us. The things we like in cattle we found in Sinclair bloodlines, Chuck comments. We get along well with the bulls we ve used. When you have a lot of good cows, it makes a difference. When the bulls fit the cattle, it works pretty well. It takes years to get your cowherd exactly as we wanted it, Charlotte adds. We accomplished that, and Sinclair bulls helped us to do it. Changes over time The agriculture industry has also changed dramatically since the first half of the twentieth century, when the Hubings got started. We used to have to trail all of our cattle because there weren t trucks to haul them, Chuck says. We saw semi trucks come to ranching. Chuck also notes that today, they look back on many photos of what their ranch used to be, but he adds, laughing, In the early times, we never even had a camera to take pictures. We ve seen most of the hard times in ranching, Chuck mentions. Charlotte adds, We had the blizzards and the droughts that everyone else had, but we were on that ranch for 43 years. We knew we liked ranching and that is where we stayed. The next generation Chuck and Charlotte made the decision to retire just two years ago. We enjoyed our lifetime of ranching, says Charlotte. It wasn t easy to retire. But we were looking to slow down, adds Chuck, and the couple who was helping us out didn t look like they wanted to slow down anytime soon. We liked them, so we made a deal. The Hubings visit their former ranch, now run by Mike and Lisa Karrels, from time to time, looking back at all the changes through the years. The Karrels purchased the entire cowherd from the Hubings and continue to develop the cattle. We go back and visit every once in a while, says Chuck. They are going to keep expanding, and they keep using Sinclair bulls. They are keeping an awful lot of heifer calves, and the operation is getting bigger. Mike and Lisa continue to utilize bulls from Sinclair, seeing the benefits of continued improvement in the resulting calves. Sinclair Cattle Company will offer the same, proven genetics at their bull sale this year, and Mike and Lisa note that they will continue to invest in the bulls that have resulted in proven profitability for the operation over many years.
