2 Dear Fellow Charolais Breeders, From the first visit to the homeland of Charolais, to the everyday hard work and involvement of ranching, to the opportunity to entertain many International and Canadian friends, to travel to support many other Charolais breeders in their endeavours, there is no better way of life than The Charolais Way Of Life. As the Canadian Charolais Association celebrates its 50 years as an association, we too, are celebrating our 51 years of raising Charolais. Cadet Roussel, who we imported from France in 1967, is an everyday household word. He is the foundation of our Full French Charolais herd. Cadet s indexes on the C to C program were well over 100 in 7 of the 8 categories. Cadet was respected as the Most Highly Proven Beef Bull in North America. You will find many animals in this sale that are descendants of him. Every animal in the sale is a direct descendant of animals or semen imported from France to suit the North American beef producers. For the last 10 years we have imported semen from Polled bulls from France. Our herd is now 40% Polled Full French. Although our family, Grace & Brian and our grandson Travis as well as Calvin and Kirk, have not been directly involved in the Ranch, they are always willing to help at our beck and call. Eric Knudsen was the manager at Rudiger Ranch for 15 years. Although he left for other fields, it is like he and his wife Dianne never really left. Eric and Dianne have returned to help us with the dispersal of our cattle. To our family and Eric and Dianne, we are most grateful. We appreciate the help we received from our long time friends, Rod and Mern James, Bob Wilson, and Craig Flewelling, who helped us make the decision to disperse our cattle. Having raised and sold many cattle over the 50 years we wish to make special mention of the many breeders who have supported us. To all of you a special Thank You. With no regrets, we are offering our unique Full French Charolais herd for sale knowing that each and every animal will have a small impact on your breeding program. If any of us can be of help to you in the selection of your cattle in our sale or in any way in the future, do not hesitate to call upon us. We wish you the best of success with our Charolais in the future. As the sun sets over the mountains at Rudiger Ranch and as a new dawn arrives, we will have cherished memories of our Charolais friends. John Rudiger is a founding member of the Canadian Charolais Association and perhaps the greatest promoter of Charolais our breed has ever seen. For more than 50 years Rudiger Ranch has been on the leading edge of our industry breeding, selecting, showing, promoting, and marketing quality Charolais cattle. John was responsible for the recruitment of many of the great leaders and participants in our breed. With his great enthusiasm for Charolais, it was next to impossible not to share his excitement. John Rudiger was actually involved in the first direct importations of cattle from France in 1966 and has always emphasized muscle, performance, and predictability in his breeding program. In recent years they have introduced the Polled gene into their French cattle and now over 40% of the herd carries polled genetics. Going through the Rudiger herd this summer, I was really impressed with the qualities, or traits, these French cattle bring to our beef industry capacity, muscle, ease of fleshing, and very quiet dispositions. This Rudiger Dispersal sale will be a great opportunity for you to add these positive traits to your herd purebred, Full French or commercial. On November 18th, I invite you to join John and Rowana Rudiger to share their hospitality and to help them celebrate 50 fabulous years of breeding Charolais at this Rudiger Ranch Finalé sale. Please call if I can assist you in any way with your purchase. Sincerely, Dale Norheim, D Bar L Livestock

3 The Finalé to a 51 Year Passion T he list of awards John and Rowana Rudiger, of Rudiger Ranch, have received is a testament to their long-standing committment to the breed: SCA Honour Scroll, 1991; CCA Honour Roll, 1999; ACA Pioneer of the Year, 1998; Canadian Cattleman of the Year at Denver Stock Show, 2001 and the ACA Breeder of the Year, It all started when John read an article about a Hereford breeder who bred half of his cows to a Charolais bull and the other half straight Hereford. At weaning, the Charolais calves were 100 pounds heavier than the straightbreds and that advantage carried on through the feedlot. On feed the Charolais crosses gained another 100 pounds over the straightbreds giving the Charolais crosses a total advantage of 200 pounds in less than sixteen months under the same conditions. The article went on to explain that the Charolais cross carcasses had more red meat and less fat than straightbreds. I said to myself - if that is true, then there must be a need for Charolais. All that is needed then is to tell the world about it. That s why I got started in Charolais, states John. Telling the world about Charolais has been John s passion since He sold 50 commercial cows from his Cutknife, Saskatchewan ranch, to purchase one-half interest in 7 15/16 heifers at $1,500 each, 1 purebred heifer at $2,500 and a purebred bull at $3,500. The bull, Santa Claus, was judged the first Grand Champion Charolais bull in Canada by Charley Litton, at Buffalo Lake, Alberta. By crossbreeding and upgrading on his remaining commercial herd, the Rudiger Charolais herd began to grow. To sell Charolais at this time, you had to sell the new concept of crossbreeding, A.I. and a different kind of thinking. It took some talking to convince breeders to try Charolais, but John was determined. He felt his best selling tool was the article that convinced him to give them a try. Their display herd also played a key role in their success because they had a commercial cow with a Charcross calf at side. The extra gain was obvious and definitely made it easy to start a conversation. In 1960, a small group of breeders met at the Palliser Hotel in Calgary to form the Canadian Charolais Association. John became a director and continued to serve until 1969 and again from 1994 to When the Saskatchewan Charolais Association was formed in 1963, John served as its first president for a two-year term. He understood that for the breed to flourish, the associations also had to grow and dedicated time and effort to ensure it happened. His political career didn t end there, he also served on the CCA Breed Improvement Committee from 1960 to 1997; he is a lifetime member of the American Charolais Association; a founding member and director of the Mexican Herd Book; represented the ACA on the Alberta Cattle All Breeds Association; and represented the CCA at World Federation meetings in Argentina and Mexico. When the dream of importing directly from France became a reality, John flew over to select his imports. He decided he would rather look for strong bloodlines, than select from various herds throughout the country. His imports were from the Boudry & De Maintenat herd. He became a familiar figure among Charolais breeders in France. Full French Charolais became successfully blended into domestic cattle in Canada and these first imports lead the way for major changes in the beef industry. John s most successful import was a bull named Cadet Roussel. He selected him as a six month old calf in France in 1967 and he became a mainstay at Rudiger Ranch. JR imported Charolais for 14 consecutive years. Rudiger Ranch held the first Canadian public auction Charolais bull sale in 1967 at Maple Creek. The PFRA bought their first Charolais bulls at this sale and continued to Leroy Van Dyke and his wife with Rowana. Leroy, singer of the famous Auctioneer Song opened one of their sales RUDIGER CHAROLAIS RANCH FINALÉ 3

4 purchase Rudiger Ranch bulls at 28 consecutive sales. John moved from the Cutknife farm his father started in 1910 to their present home on the west side of Calgary, in At the peak of production on Rudger Ranch they ran about 350 purebred females. The production of a leaner meat had to be sold to consumers through a higher profile campaign. John, along with Rodney James, John Owen and Harvey Smith, formed Charolais Beef Products in They sold Charolais bulls to commercial ranchers and contracted to buy back their calves and finish them out. They marketed the meat as Charolais beef to restaurants and retail customers across Canada. The Lake Bonavista Inn, in Calgary, sold steaks at a premium of $1 over their regular menu steaks and Charolais out sold them. Charolais Beef Products introduced aged cryovacted frozen loins to the restaurant trade. John still thinks it was a great program, but it was probably at least 25 years ahead of its time. Rudiger Ranch has built its herd on performance and progeny testing. As soon as programs were available, he enrolled cattle. He participated in the Charolais test station at Rodney James at Lacombe and enrolled his herd on the Canadian Record of Performance (ROP) program until CHARM was available. He helped to make the C-C Sire Evaluation program get off the ground and entered two bulls on the first test. He has utilized this program to evaluate all his main herdsires. They have had top indexing bulls at several test stations in both Canada and the U.S.A. and top gaining steers at tests in Saskatoon, Stanford and Montana were sired by Cadet Roussel. The JR entire bull calf crop has been entered on the Cattlelands test for over 30 years. His success in performance testing carried into the sale ring. Paul Lacroix, QC, purchased Miss Lazy JR Andalou 16Y, bred to Cadet Roussel for $11,700. Lewis Roy, SK, purchased Miss Lazy JR Andalou 10Y, also bred to Cadet Roussel for $10,500. A quarter breeding interest in Cadet sold to Ted Keating and Dr. Lamb in Montana. The C-C results showed Cadet indexed well over 100 in seven of the eight categories. These results coupled with an advertising program on the back cover of the Charolais Banner quickly made Cadet the most sought after bull in North America. John was always an innovator and believed in promoting. Rudiger Ranch advertised continuously on the back cover of the Charolais Banner from its first issue in October, 1966, until their dispersal in Cadet s prominence grew as his progeny topped shows and sales. Another quarter interest sold to Van s Enterprises for $81,000 which created a wave of excitement in the Charolais business. A record for high seller was set and fell when John bought a mother and her two daughters as a package for $102,500 from Gladmere Farms, Ontario, at the 1974 Agribition Sale. John continued to search for top genetics and his importations also included Caid, who left many good daughters. John received top honours in the show ring as well with Champions at the Toronto Royal and Canadian Western Agribition. In 1975 he held a record breaking sale with lots averaging $10,484. In 1978, after 20 years in the business, John and Rowana were forced to disperse their herd. Their ranch is located on high cost land and they lost most of the lease grazing land to city development. This forced them to buy their feed and essentially Rowana on Pepper John and his plane with a Charolais sign on the side John on his stallion Akrabat 4 RUDIGER CHAROLAIS RANCH FINALÉ

5 John keeping in touch while in Palm Desert feed all year. But after dedicating twenty years of your life to building an industry through showing, testing, promoting, selling and politicing, you don t just walk away. They started to rebuild their herd. Rudiger Charolais Ranch, along with five shareholders, purchased the one million acres Gang Ranch in British Columbia. John was named the President and General Manager. Their first calf crop sired by Simmental, Hereford, Angus and Longhorm weaned off at 310 lbs. Under John s charge the entire bull battery was changed to 175 Charolais bulls and adding a few Charolais cross females, their average weaning weight on over 3,000 calves was 598 lbs. weighed off the truck at a feedlot west of High River. After five years he sold his shares to one of the partners, Shiekh Ibraham Afandi. JR stopped showing Charolais when the judges started selecting tall, narrow cattle. He started back in 1992 with Agribition Grand Champion Bull (Tango); 1993 Denver Reserve Senior Champion Bull (Zing); 1993 Houston National Reserve Grand Champion Bull (Tango) and 1993 Calgary Stampede Grand Champion Bull (Comet). In the 2005 Calgary Bull Sale, a Full French Curtis Wallace son was named Grand Champion and sold for $12,200. A definite highlight in their showing career was the 2006 World Charolais Congress Full French Show in Edmonton. They not only received Grand Champion Bull and Grand Champion Female, but also racked up Reserve Junior Champion Female, Reserve Mature Cow, Senior Champion Bull, Best Pair of Bulls, Get of Sire, Breeder s Herd and Premier Breeder and Exibitor awards. John is not one to simply sit back and sell bulls, he has to be making things happen. In 2000, he helped spearhead the formation of the Canadian Full French Charolais Breeders group. In 2004, they held the first Full French Charolais Show in Canada before their sale and Rudiger Ranches had Grand Champion Female and Reserve Grand Champion Bull. John and Rowana both served on the 2006 World Charolais Congress committees and were excited to show the world the type of cattle we have in Canada. Rowana chaired the hospitality committee and she and Grace made many trips to the airport to greet international guests. John was in charge of the Full French show. After years of importing genetics, John started to realize the potential for Canadian genetics around the world. No matter where John travels, he promotes Charolais cattle. His tireless promotion of the breed has seen him exporting cattle, embryos and semen to Egypt, England, Australia, Mexico, France, U.S.A., Brazil and Cuba. Charolais hasn t been John s only interest. He owned and flew his own plane from He formed the company, Canadian Ostrich Marketing, for the purpose of importing Ostrich from Africa and Australia to market in Canada. Over 900 birds were imported. He is a longtime member of the Elks and even served as a 4-H leader in Cutknife when his children Grace, Cal and Kirk were involved. John went to Cuba on behalf of CUSO to teach the judging of beef cattle and has been part of trade commissions to Argentina, Uraguay, Brazil, Mexico, Australia, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Austria promoting Charolais. They have raised and shown Arabian horses and still enjoy a good ride in the mountains. After Calgary Stampede in 2005, John and Rowana signed up for a Centennial five day ride, averaging 20 miles each day. They were up at 4:30 in the morning to do chores, have breakfast and break camp to leave by 7 a.m. They only rode as late as 2 p.m. each day because of the heat, but thoroughly enjoyed being outdoors on their horses. They enjoy camping, although it is now done in a nice fifth-wheel trailer and they spend some of the winter in the sunny south each year. Never far from their Charolais business though. We will miss John s calls with his next ad idea as he keeps up on things through the internet from wherever he is in the world. Not many people at his age enjoy a zest for life and enthusiasm for an industry he helped build, states Helge By. In 2005, Rudiger Ranch had ten Full French Charolais bulls on feed efficiency test at Cattleland. A Cadet son was named Peoples Choice out of 34 bulls on test with an ADG of 4.43 lbs. and a yearling weight of 1,565 lbs. John believes that Charolais best years are yet to come. We just have to keep promoting and showing that our cattle are better performers. No one has invested more of their lives in the business and still believes that it will continue to grow and improve. The opportunity to be part of the legacy through Finalé is upon you. Take it, you never know where it will lead you. RUDIGER CHAROLAIS RANCH FINALÉ 5
