As we look back on a year of mother nature challenges, many crops still sit in waiting for spring weather, many keeping calves back to feed in hopes of higher calf prices into the new year, we realize bull sale season is fast upon us. Here at JSF we work towards this all year. From the time the cow/calf pairs hit the grass to when the bulls go through the chute there is always a critical eye put forward, putting you the customer in mind for your needs to get the best out of your operation. We are always trying to improve in every aspect of the cattle business. With a commercial cattle herd ourselves we make decisions just as our customers would. We use our own sire grouped bulls on our cows in hopes of gaining sufficient knowledge. It helps us help you. We feel you should back what you sell! This holds true in the fast paced Speckle Park markets we have today. We are always trying to improve our markets. By adding ultrasound data to our young females and herd bulls in the hopes of making a more efficient cow. We have also incorporated the Q-Link test to our sale bulls to give you the customer more information on internal carcass data such as tenderness, marbling, back fat, milk production, and many other internal traits that will come very useful in future plans. All this data is a very good tool but we must never forget to select on the type of bull that looks and appeals to your program. There is a great looking functional set of bulls with data in this year s bull pen. Just as other years, it is bull sale time all winter and into the spring. We always look forward to farm visits. As you make your bull selection the cows aren t far away - sometimes it is nice to see the mama cow in making your selection. 3 A Commercial Perspective When the time comes to select your bull for commercial cows, there are a lot of things to consider. Lets start with breed as there is a variety from British to Exotic. Then there is the color within the breed! Now you can start thinking of Speckle Park as well. One characteristic should never change and that is quality and we can find that in all breeds. Each producer has the ability to select what suits him or her best. As long as quality prevails, any combination should give you great results. As a purebred producer we strive for quality and consistency. We like what we have found in Speckle Park. A breed of exceptional quality. A breed that shows shape and muscle pattern on a greater percentage of the calves. As we started into this breed of Speckle Park, we used the bulls on a cross section of commercial cows. Just as we had suspected, they exceeded our expectations. Quality again rises to the forefront. The same cows bred Polled Hereford or Angus showed more consistency when bred Speckle Park. The cross was exciting and so was the color. Speaking of color well that is a mystery, as there is really no prediction on color. That can be exciting as well. In a declining cow market with fewer young enthusiasts wanting in the business, a little surprise at calving keeps you keen. Speckle Park numbers are increasing. The demand will always be there for ease of calving and feed conversion. A very popular meat market is being established especially in Australia. A frequent question has been, Am I going to be discounted on the market by using Speckle Park bulls? Not anymore, is our response. There was a time this might have been the case but as we move forward, we are seeing changes to this idea. Feedlot numbers are increasing with positive results of feed conversion and grading. And don t forget how good the taste is. We have customers to prove it! A bull is the most important part of your breeding program. You purchase a bull for heifers you keep more than for the calves you sell. The selection of quality may cost you an extra buck or two but well worth the dollars spent. So as you consider your selection of a bull this bull sale season, seriously consider a Speckle Park influence in your herd. Here at JSF we are a believer in this breed and the direction it is going.
