2 Welcome We would like to thank everybody that has supported our bull sale over the years. We have many good friends in the cattle and livestock industry, that is why we take very seriously the confidence you have placed in us for our bulls to go out and improve your bottom line. You, like us, depend on your livestock to support, and take care of your families and pay your bills. We are very proud of our heritage and the previous generations that have done so much for us, so that we are able to enjoy the way of life that we love so much. I remember when my dad had the idea to buy the ranch that he grew up on, the place that his dad had managed for forty plus years. I was twelve years old, the year was We were all excited because it bordered the property that our Grandpa and Grandma, Doug and Doris Roche, had purchased from Grandma s dad, Job Hadfield. The year we bought the ranch calves were in the high seventies and lambs were in the high forties, and the interest on the loans was around 13-14%. Somehow, we have managed to make it until now. When we started on our own in 1992, we had 100 head of heifers, we bought from Pete and Craig Holmgren and 250 head of old ewes we bought from Grandpa Chournos. We have grown that to the point where we run a 1000 head of cows and 4000 head of sheep. We are not the smartest, but we do know what it takes to grow a place and make it work. We have taken the same approach to our bull program. We continue to improve the quality every year, and this year is our best offering yet. These cattle know how to work and make a profit in a commercial environment because they have to; if they don t, we do not have a ranch. I believe one of the best ways to stay profitable is to take advantage of crossbreeding and especially maternal heterosis. Quality research proves that every time maternal heterosis is the most valuable tool available to improve cow performance and herd profitability, and it s easy to get. With the low heritability of maternal traits like fertility and longevity, a breeder or breed can spend a lifetime trying to make the same progress for those crucial traits that can be realized in one easy cross. Studies show an equivalent of 1 to 1.5 extra calves over the lifetime of a female in favor of a crossbred cow because of her combination of greater longevity and extra calf weaning weight. If we could purchase a pharmaceutical that added that much performance and profit, there is little doubt that producers would stand in line all day to buy some. Feed Testing We decided this year to do a feed test on the bulls to help everyone determine performance on feed. The test was conducted were the bulls have been feed all fall and winter for 68 days. The ration was the same ration that they have been feed all fall. We were really excited by the results as the bulls averaged 3.5 Lbs. On a ration that would be comparable to what most places would feed to replacement heifers. When we ran the numbers we discovered that the bulls were also converting the feed very efficiently as our cost of gain was approximately.80 Cents per pound gained. With todays high feed costs that is a very good ratio. Which proves the ability of these bulls to go out and sire cattle that not only will be able to perform and excell on the range, but will have the performance to really gain and convert feed efficiently in the feed yard. 10 Yearly Angus Bulls These yearling angus bulls are the best angus genetics to date that we have offered. They are functional good doing angus bulls that will not fall to pieces while going out and breeding cows. When I am selecting angus genetics to incorporate in our herd, I place a lot of emphasis on mature height epd and energy epd. I want the bulls I use to have a positive energy epd or only slightly negative and I want there yearling height epd to be from.1 to -.5. I feel angus is a maternal breed and by putting emphasis on these traits it helps the cattle to stay that way. I do not chase carcass traits in the angus cattle like a lot of breeders do. I feel that angus naturally are good marbling carcass cattle. The other reason is, there are very few of my bull customers that retain ownership and sell there cattle on the grid. Do not get me wrong as you study the pedigree of these bulls you will see a lot of bulls that have oustanding carcass sires but they will also have positive energy epd and a negative yearling height epd. These angus bulls will be affordable as anywhere and just as good as any over-hyped montana angus bull. 15 Simmental Influenced Yearlings These next lots are the simmental influenced yearlings in the sale. They are soft made with good calving ease and excellent growth and muscling. These hybrid bulls simplify any crossbreeding situation, allowing you to take advantage of heterosis while still being able to keep the heifers out of these bulls for replacements. The simmental breed has come so far in improving calving ease while still maintaining the growth that has made the breed so popular.
