General Information Individual Animal Information All performance information in this catalog is correct to the best of our knowledge. Data was taken from the respective breed associations in January All measures taken are adjusted by age according to each individual breed association. Performance data followed by an asterisk (*) denotes the weight or measure is actual and is not adjusted for age. Updated performance, breeding, ultrasound and DNA information may be made available in the form of a supplement sheet on the Internet and on sale day. Simmental bulls and heifers in the sale have been tested for the color and horn genes through IGENITY. All cattle in the sale that trace to carrier animals have been tested free of Idiopathic Epilepsy (IE), Arthrogryposis Multiplex (AM), and Neuropathic Hydrocephalus (NH). Expected Progeny Difference (EPD), is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. EPDs are the best overall prediction of differences in progeny performance and are useful tools that aid in selection; however, EPDs DO NOT predict an actual level of performance. For example, a bull with a birth weight EPD of +3.0 should sire calves approximately two pounds heavier than a bull with a birth weight EPD of The actual weight of the calf will depend upon environmental factors. EPDs can be used to compare cattle within a breed but CANNOT be used to compare cattle of different breeds. The table below contains Spring 2010 average EPDs for the breeds represented in this sale. BREED CED BW WW YW MILK MARB REA Angus Hereford Simmental Explanation of Common EPDs: Calving Ease Direct (CED) is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. Birth Weight EPD (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny. Weaning Weight EPD (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny. Yearling Weight EPD (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny. Scrotal Circumference EPD (SC), expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of a sire s ability to transmit scrotal size to his progeny. Calving Ease Maternal (CEM) is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf daughters. Maternal Milk EPD (Milk) is a predictor of a sire s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters. Intramuscular Fat EPD (%IMF) is a predictor of the difference in a sire s progeny for percent intramuscular fat in the ribeye muscle. Ribeye Area EPD (RE) is a predictor of the difference in square inches of ultrasound ribeye area of a sire s progeny. Fat Thickness EPD (FAT), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the difference in ultrasound fat thickness at the 12th rib of a sire s progeny. Angus $Value Indexes $Value indexes are multi-trait selection indexes to assist beef producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. $Values are reported in dollars per head, where a higher value is more favorable. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires in the database if the sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment. Cow Energy Value ($EN), expressed in dollars savings per cow per year, assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expected dollar savings difference in daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals (more dollars saved on feed energy expenses). Weaned Calf Value ($W), expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for preweaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk, and mature cow size. Feedlot Value ($F), expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for post-weaning merit compared to progeny of other sires. Grid Value ($G), expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires. It may be the best carcass decision tool for focusing on quality and red meat yield simultaneously. Beef Value ($B), expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for post-weaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires. Hereford $Value Indexes Baldy Maternal Index (BMI$), used for selecting commercial Hereford bulls for use on Angus-cross cows and heifers, where replacement heifers will be raised. Retained ownership of steers and cull heifers through the feedlot phase is assumed, with fed cattle marketed on a Certified Hereford Beef (CHB) program grid. Calving EZ Index (CEZ$), used for selecting commercial Hereford bulls for use on yearling heifers only. This index has increased emphasis on direct and maternal calving ease compared with the other indexes. Brahman Influenced Index (BII$), is similar to BMI$, except Hereford bulls are used in a rotational crossbreeding system with Brahman, rather than Angus. Certified Hereford Beef Index (CHB$), a terminal sire index, where Hereford bulls are mated to British-cross cows, and all offspring are sold as fed cattle on a CHB grid. Simmental EPDs and $Value Indexes: Stayability- Expressed as the probability that an animal s daughters will remain in production to at least six years of age when compared to the daughters of another animal. Expressed as deviations from a 50% probability, a higher value indicates increased stayability. All-Purpose Index () Evaluates sires being bred to both firstcalf heifers and mature cows with a portion of their daughters being retained for breeding and the cull heifers and steers are fed out. This index includes both production models and maternal values to form an all-inclusive selection tool. Terminal Index () - Designed for evaluating sires economic merit in situations where they are bred to mature cows and all offspring go to the feedlot. Consequently, maternal traits such as maternal calving ease, maternal weaning weight and female fertility are not considered in the index

IGENITY DNA Information The IGENITY Profile IGENITY provides the beef industry with the most comprehensive genetic profile of multiple traits of economic importance. The insights gained from an IGENITY profile help producers make more confident selection, management and marketing decisions. The IGENITY profile includes multiple-marker analyses for traits such as: Tenderness, Marbling, Quality Grade, Yield Grade, Hot Carcass Weight, Fat Thickness, Ribeye Area, Heifer Pregnancy Rate, Stayability, Calving Ease and Docility. Profile Score Advantages To assist cattle producers in understanding the value of DNA technology, IGENITY has developed a scoring system for each trait using a scale of 1 to 10. Higher values are not necessarily better they simply indicate that the animal has the potential for more of that trait. The following descriptions and table are useful in describing each trait and reflect the relative difference expected in animals compared to contemporaries with an IGENITY profile score of 1. Tenderness: The analysis in the IGENITY profile for tenderness represents an animal s genetic potential for tenderness as measured by Warner- Bratzler Shear Force (WBSF), with 10 being the most tender and 1 being the least tender. Lower actual shear force means more tender beef. In a group of animals with a score from IGENITY of 10 for tenderness, 2.3 pounds less shear force is required than an animal with a score from IGENITY of 1. Marbling Score: Higher scores from IGENITY for marbling equal greater genetic potential for marbling. In a group of animals with a score from IGENITY of 10 for marbling, the average marbling score can be expected to be 161 points greater than animals with a score of 1. The USDA beef grading system for marbling uses a 100 to 999 point scale. Marbling points reflect how much intramuscular fat is present in each carcass, and thus the potential to grade USDA Choice. Ribeye Area: Higher scores from the IGENITY profile reflect larger ribeye areas and lower scores reflect smaller ribeye areas. In a group of animals with a score from IGENITY of 10 for ribeye area, the average ribeye is expected to be 2.56 square inches larger than in a group of animals with a score of 1. Yield Grade Higher scores from IGENITY for yield grade equal a genetic potential for a higher USDA yield grade. Since higher yield grade values are a result of more fat and/or less muscle, animals with higher scores for yield grade are expected to be fatter and/or lighter muscled. A group of animals with a score from IGENITY of 10 for yield grade can be expected to receive a yield grade that is 1.35 units of a grade higher (less favorable) than animals that receive a score of 1 from IGENITY. Average Daily Gain A key profitability measurement for any operation, Average Daily Gain is measured in lbs of gain per day. The IGENITY profile results for Average Daily Gain identifies an animal s genetic potential for rate of gain, for both calves and post-weaning growth. Animals which score a 10 will gain an additional.81 lbs per day over animals which score a 1 which means a 166 lb difference over 205 days. Check out updated IGENITY information online at Thank you to Rick Pfortmiller and IGENITY for their continued support of Kansas State University.

NOTES

History Kansas State University s purebred beef herd was established in 1881 with the purchase of an Aberdeen-Angus heifer, Eyebright 4th 7131 (7446) from the Ontario Agricultural College. A Hereford bull and heifer, Parley and Miss Beau Real 7th 30781, were purchased from George Fowler, Maple Hill, Kansas in These two breeds made up the herd until it was disposed in 1897 due to tuberculin test reactions and an order from the Board of Regents. The Board s order was the result of concern across the state that K-State s cattle should be practical farmer s livestock instead of purebred animals. The herd was then reestablished in 1901 with seven different breeds of beef, dairy and dual-purpose cattle. Purebred Beef Teaching Unit The Purebred Beef Teaching Unit annually runs nearly 250 breeding-age purebred Angus, Hereford, and Simmental cows on 4,000 acres of native bluestem grass. The main headquarters is located in Manhattan at the edge of campus on the corner of Denison and Kimball Avenue. This location houses bull testing facilities, heifer development yard, show barn and office. Mature females are maintained northeast of town about ten miles at the esteemed Cedar Creek Ranch headquarters. This ranch, located just off Highway 13, serves an instrumental role in the teaching aspect of our operation. Here, students have the opportunity to participate in real-world scenarios of beef production and pasture management. These students are employed by the K-State Beef Barn for the year: Tyler Leonhard, Jared Seeley, Levi Herrman, Kevin Hightower, Danny Forsyth, Jake Gleason, Kelvin May, Jara Settles. Mission and Purpose Our mission is to provide undergraduate students with practical experience in breeding, feeding, management and marketing of purebred seedstock as well as give livestock selection, general animal science courses, and students from colleges across the nation the opportunity to evaluate quality cattle. Each year hundreds of students utilize cattle raised at this unit. The herd also provides an opportunity to demonstrate breeding programs for genetic improvement of seedstock, using tools like performance testing, artificial insemination, embryo transfer and ultrasound carcass evaluation. Applied research trials are conducted using cattle produced in this herd, such as cloning technology, synchronized artificial insemination, feed efficiency and feed additive research. Cattle are also employed for teaching purposes in classes such as Livestock Sales Management, Pregnancy Diagnosis, Bovine Calving, and used for competition in the annual Little American Royal. A portion of the cattle produced in this herd are merchandised in the annual Legacy Bull and Female Sale held the first Friday in March. This sale is unique to the nation because it is engineered entirely by students to give them hands-on, practical experience in purebred cattle marketing. Production Sales The first Special K Production Sale was held in It was unique to the nation because it was a university sale organized and managed by students. A sale has been held each school year since Early sales rotated between Angus, Simmental and Hereford cattle and included females. In 1987, it was decided to sell all breeds in one annual bull sale. The highest selling individual in a Special K sale was Slammer K 04147, a Hereford bull. He was purchased in 1981 by C K Hereford Ranch, Brookville, Kansas, for $12,500. K-State s highest selling female to date was Miss Kansas K 3G, a Simmental donor cow sold at the National

Western Stock Show for $16,500. K-State s most distinguished animal was the Angus heifer, Manhattan Gal. Her national reputation was the momentum behind the first Special K Edition sale. Manhattan Gal was the Supreme Champion Individual at the 1976 Angus Futurity, and the Grand Champion Angus Female at the American Royal, North American Livestock Exposition and the National Western Stock Show (NWSS). In 2008, the name of the K-State production sale was changed to the Legacy sale to honor 127 years of continuous beef improvement. The K-State Purebred Beef Teaching Unit might be the most unique experience offered to current and potential students in agricultural colleges across the nation. The educational opportunities available to students producing, promoting and merchandising high quality purebred cattle continues to play a fundamental role in a program that has been nationally recognized for excellence in teaching as well as contributing to the outstanding alumni support received by the Kansas State Department of Animal Sciences and Industry. Show Accolades K-State has compiled many show accolades in all three breeds, including 2002 NWSS Grand Champion Horned Hereford Female, 2002 NWSS Reserve Champion Simmental Female, 2005 NWSS National Champion Simmental Bull, and many other state and regional championships. More recently, KSU Bounty Hunter 611, the high-selling bull in the 2007 Special K Sale, was named Reserve National Champion Bull at the 2007 and 2008 Canadian Agribition. KSU Wildcat 656 ET, high-selling bull in the 2008 Legacy Sale, was named Champion Bull at the 2008 Iowa State Fair, 2008 Kansas State Fair and reserve champion at the 2008 State Fair of Texas. KSU Legacy 654 ET was named Reserve Champion bull at the Missouri State Fair. This exposure has attracted students from all over the United States and Canada to enroll at K-State and continue the legacy of excellence in purebred beef cattle breeding Livestock Sales Management Class Michael Adams John Barnes Brad Bennett Brandi Brill Courtney Cale Lucia Carrillo Dalon Coder Ben Colle Scott Dean Tiffany Ebert Grant Edwards Devin Goehring Lindsay Graber Emily Griffiths Levi Herrman Rachel Hieston Joseph Hubbard James Hudson Neil Isaac Elk Falls, KS Lucama, NC Weyers Cave, VA Conway Springs, KS Gardner, KS Monterrey, Mexico Effingham, KS Nickerson, KS Imperial, NE St. George, KS Wichita, KS Lowell, WI Haven, KS Kendallville, IN Scandia, KS Jamestown, IN Olsburg, KS Macksville, KS Meade, KS Melissa Jolly Kellen Jorgensen Danielle Kennemer Zachary Louderbaugh Matt Melvin Kyle Morgan Marcus Murrow Garrett Preedy Ty Riggs Samuel Rucker Jara Settles Cassandra Silveira Anna Siverson Tucker Stewart Kiley Stinson Miles Theurer Travis Warner Chris Weston Michael Wimer Overbrook, KS Exeter, NE Camden Point, MO Center, KS London Mills, IL Louisburg, KS Tipton, KS Meade, KS Sedan, KS Burdett, KS Hoskins, NE Sanger, CA Dallas, TX Washington, KS Allen, KS Wellington, KS Lebanon, KS Moran, KS Smolan, KS
