By belonging to 4-H you are joining over 900 other Putnam County boys and girls in one of the largest youth organizations in the world. This 4-H Family Handbook has been prepared for the benefit of you and your family. Please read it carefully. If you have any questions or concerns at anytime about 4-H, please call our Putnam County office. Our address, phone numbers, and address are listed above. We hope you have an enjoyable year in 4-H and that you are able to take part in the many 4-H activities planned for your education and enjoyment! The web page offers 4-Her s, volunteers, and parents a new way to get information about the 4-H program in Putnam County. The web page contains our monthly newsletter, and forms and applications for a variety of activities including Junior Fair Board, Junior Leadership, Camp Counselors, and Junior Fair Entries. The 4-H Handbook and current Calendar of Events are also posted. The web page can be a valuable tool for everyone! If you have suggestions on how to improve the site, please give us a call. Feedback is always welcome. 4-H. What Is It All About? 4-H is a voluntary, educational program designed to meet the needs and interests of boys and girls. Membership to the 4-H club program begins when a child is at least age 8 and enrolled in 3rd grade as of January 1 of current year. Ohio 4-H membership ends December 31 of the year in which an individual attains the age of 19. Cloverbuds membership begins when a child has reached age 5 and is enrolled in kindergarten as of January 1 of current year. Participation and membership are open to all such youth without regard to race, color, national origin, ethnic background, social-economic situation, or place of residence. The purpose of 4-H is to provide learning experiences and opportunities for boys and girls which will help them grow and develop to the fullest of their potential. Projects, programs, and activities are tools used to help members in this regard. They should be adapted to fit the needs and interests of each person or group of persons. Although competition is a necessary part of 4-H, we must all be careful to remember that the real benefit comes from learning and not winning. Skills learned and friendships made in 4-H will long outlast any ribbons and trophies won! Although it is not mandatory, most 4-H members exhibit their 4-H projects at the Putnam County Fair. All 4-H members exhibiting at the fair must abide by all rules established by the Putnam County Agricultural Society. **While we try to inform all our 4-H members about county fair rules, we cannot adequately cover all rules and regulations of the Putnam County Fair in this handbook. It is the responsibility of members to obtain a copy of the Putnam County Fair Book when it is published in early spring to become better informed. Putnam County Extension/2018 4

7 4-H ENROLLMENT AND COMPLETION REQUIREMENTS 1. PROJECTS: Members must select at least one 4-H project. Projects should be selected from the list of approved Ohio 4-H projects listed in the 4-H Family Guide Book. The county may make changes in the projects offered. Special interest projects may also be taken with the approval of the Extension Office. First Year Members - may enroll in two projects and be a member of only one club the first year. Second Year Members - may carry more than one project and be a member of no more than two clubs if they have completed the previous year satisfactorily. (With no grade less than a B ; any incomplete project from the previous year, limits any member to one project for the current year.) Advanced Members - may enroll in and carry a total of five different projects per two clubs with only three total market livestock projects per member/per year, if they have completed the previous year satisfactorily. Livestock project choices being: beef, feeder calves, swine, lambs, poultry, rabbits, milk, or goats. Any incomplete project from the previous year limits any member to one project for the current year. Junior Leadership may be taken in addition to five projects providing the youth has completed one year of 4-H Club work and is a freshman the current year in school. 2. ENROLLMENT: In order to join a 4-H club, each potential member must fill out a 4-H enrollment paper listing each project to be taken. This completed enrollment paper must be signed by a parent/guardian and turned into the Putnam County Extension Office by a club advisor no later than March 15th. Project additions, corrections, and changes may be made at the Extension Office until April 15th. (Any project changes after this date will be considered ineligible for championship class trophies and will be judged for a grade only.) **Please Note: The 4-H Enrollment paperwork does not enter your livestock project in the Jr. Fair. A Junior Fair Entry Form must be completed in June to be entered. 3. BOOKS: All 4-H project books will be distributed to the 4-H members by the club s advisor. Advisors may pick up project books from the Putnam County Extension Office. Some project books will have an additional charge to the member above and beyond the local club dues. For example: all livestock resource books will be offered at additional cost. 4. PROJECT GUIDELINES/REQUIREMENTS: Project guidelines and judging/exhibit requirements for all 4-H projects are included in the member s project book(s). In addition, the Putnam County Fair Book must be referred to for additional fair rules. These are very important in knowing what to bring to the project judging, so be sure they are included with the member s project book. 5. PROJECT COMPLETION: For completion, all 4-H projects must be judged. The member may choose one of the following options: A ) A county wide interview judging will be held for all 4-H projects. Dates are listed in the calendar of events. Most projects judged at these events are eligible for county awards. B ) An Early Bird Judging will be held at the Extension Office excluding livestock exhibitors (date listed on calendar) for those unable to attend the scheduled county judging date. There will also be a Livestock Skillathon Make-up judging day for any livestock member that cannot attend the scheduled judging dates. This must be complete prior to the start of the fair. *Members not completing one of the above options for their projects will be incomplete!* Putnam County Extension/2018 5

8 4-H ENROLLMENT AND COMPLETION REQUIREMENTS CONTINUED 6. ATTENDANCE: All members /advisors are expected to attend at least six local club meetings per year. Individual club constitutions may provide for some type of make-up meetings. Fulfilling club attendance requirements is part of being in good standing and is required for Camp Counselor, Jr. Fair Board and fair participation. 7. All 4-H projects, including livestock, will be interview judged at a specified date prior to the fair. 4-H members will be required to have their completed project book and livestock record book at the interview judging to receive an A grade. (Please refer to page 9 for grade guidelines.) 8. PUTNAM COUNTY FAIR - OPTIONAL: Exhibition at the Putnam County Fair is optional for all 4-H members and does not determine whether a project is complete or incomplete. Only those projects that are exhibited at the fair will be eligible for a fair premium. (Refer to the Fair Premium Book for exact amounts and number of entries allowed.) 9. DEMONSTRATION: Each member should give a demonstration/illustrated talk pertaining to their project at the their local club meeting. 10. GRADES: Final project grades are received at interview judging. Projects exhibited at the fair will also include a fair exhibit grade to determine money paid. 11. Any project made for competition or for a grade in any activity, such as FFA, FHA, school, or similar organizations, cannot be entered as 4-H projects at the county fair. 12. No individual may be a 4-H member in 2 or more counties simultaneously. Youth are expected to affiliate with the 4-H program in the county of residence. However, in instances where youth live out of the county, membership considerations will be given by the 4-H Agents in the county of residence and the county of participation when a positive educational experience will result. An Across County Line membership form must be on file for all 4-H members residing outside of Putnam County. Please refer to policies/documents/cross%20county%20line%20membership%20policy.pdf for state policy. 13. ALL 4-H projects must be the work of the individual 4-H member. Help from parents, advisors, and other interested adults is encouraged as long as it is of an educational nature. The final exhibit must be the work of the member. 14 The Putnam County 4-H Council in consultation with the County, Regional, and State 4-H Staffs shall have the final authority in any controversies arising in the Putnam County 4-H Program. Problems or concerns dealing with the Jr. Fair will be under the final authority of the Sr. Fair Board. 15. CLOVERBUDS: Eligibility for 4-H membership begins when a child has reached age 5 and is enrolled in kindergarten as of January 1 of the current year. The philosophy of the program is to be activity based. Cloverbuds are not eligible for out-of-county activities, competitive events, residential camps, and/or projects designed for 9-19 year olds and are not to hold offices, but can lead pledges, etc. County Junior Fairs are open to participation by Cloverbud 4-H members for exhibit only. This program is optional for Putnam County 4-H Clubs. Parents should be strongly encouraged to be present and participate in the meetings with their K-2nd grader. There is a special relationship between 4-H and the Fair. 4-H does not solely signify Fair (or Junior Fair) nor does the fair solely signify 4-H. The Putnam County Fair serves as a showcase for youth participating in 4-H, FFA, Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts, and Farm Bureau. It provides the opportunity for youth to exhibit the results of their project(s) and to compete for awards and prizes under the Junior Fair Division of the fair. Participation in the fair is not required for completion of 4-H projects. Putnam County Extension/2018 6

9 PUTNAM COUNTY 4-H ~ A YOUTH ORGANIZATION WITHIN THE JUNIOR FAIR 1. The Putnam County Junior Fair is open to all boys and girls, no older than 19, regardless of race, gender, creed, national origin, and who are bonafide current members of Putnam County Youth Organization. (4-H, FFA, FHA, Boys Scouts, Girl Scouts, Farm Bureau Youth.) 2. Junior Fair Member Age & Eligibility: 4-H ~ to compete in fairs or other exhibitions the following membership statements will apply. Membership to the 4-H Club program begins when a child is at least age 8 and enrolled in the 3rd grade as of January 1 of the current year. All Junior Fair participants must successfully meet all requirements of their youth organization before being eligible to exhibit in the Junior Fair. 3. No Junior Fair participant may exhibit in more than one Junior Fair. Youth are expected to affiliate with the youth program in the county of residence. However, in instances where youth live out of county, membership considerations will be given by the 4-H Agent/FFA/FHA Advisor only when a positive education experience will result. An Across County Lines application form must be on file for all members residing outside of Putnam County or Putnam County School District boundaries. 4. Every exhibitor shall hold primary responsibility for their own projects and individually share the care of group exhibits as directed by their leader. 5. Premiums: Premium money is paid by the Putnam County Fair for exhibition of project work. The premium disbursed is based upon amounts set by the Putnam County Agricultural Society for each category or department on an individual or group basis. All premiums for 4-H project(s) will be based on a combination of project grades. For livestock, this includes the skillathon grade, exhibit, and an interview grade. 6. Ribbons will be awarded on skillathon grade. FAIR EXHIBITS 1. Each club displaying projects in the Junior Fair Building will be assigned a fair booth based on the number of non-livestock projects for your club. 2. Although reasonable effort will be made to protect 4-H exhibits from damage or theft, neither the Putnam County Fair Board or the Extension Office are responsible for the safety of any Junior Fair exhibit. All exhibits, including livestock, are placed on display at the risk of the member. Clubs assigned to a booth will be asked to sign-up for a time to watch the Junior Fair Building the week of the fair. 3. All exhibits must be removed from the Putnam County Fairgrounds on the day after the fair is concluded. 4. Due to space availability some clubs may have to share booths with other clubs. This will be decided after all entries have been made. Putnam County Extension/2018 7

10 PUTNAM COUNTY JUNIOR FAIR LIVESTOCK 1. All Junior Fair Livestock projects (except horses) MUST BE COMPLETELY AND FULLY OWNED (as evidence by bill of sale or registration papers) including all showing rights, and in complete possession and continual care of the exhibitor. 4-H Horse projects may be owned or formally leased and 4-H members must have complete and exclusive showing rights during the lease/ownership time. A copy of the lease must be on file at the Extension Office by April 15th. 2. The following possession dates for Junior Fair Livestock must be adhered for eligibility at the Putnam County Fair. Mkt Steer/Heifers...January 1 st Goats..April 15th Turkeys...March 1 st Horses...April 15th Mkt. Lambs...April 15th Poultry/Fancy/Pullets.... May 1 s Rabbits..May 17th Mkt. Hogs..April 15th Beef/Dairy Feeders...April 15th All Breeding Animals...April 15th Geese..April 14 th Meat Chickens & Ducks..May 19 th *Substitutions for animals made after the possession dates listed must be made at the discretion of the youth organization (4-H/FFA) involved. Any animal substituted after the possession date will be ineligible for championship classes at the Putnam County Fair or the Ohio State Fair. 3. Members must refer to the Putnam County Fair Premium Book for a complete list of rules and regulations regarding exhibits a the Putnam County Fair. This includes number of entries allowed, showing rules, dates and times of shows, and many other regulations. Please read over sections that pertain to you and the livestock specie(s) you plan to exhibit. 4. QUALITY ASSURANCE: This year it is mandatory for ALL 4-H Livestock Exhibitors taking market beef, market dairy steer, market lambs, market swine, market goats, rabbits, poultry or lactating dairy to participate in a Quality Assurance Meeting. These meetings will be held on a county-wide basis between the beginning of the year and the start of fair. You will not be allowed to exhibit at the fair unless you have at- tended one of the meetings. ODA youth quality assurance policy: Update to YQA: STATE FAIR: In order to be eligible to show at the Ohio State Fair, the exhibitor must meet all eligibility requirements of the Putnam County Fair and the youth organization they are involved in. All State Fair Livestock Entries will be approved by 4-H Educator or FFA Advisor in order to qualify. They will be approved by the state fair office. JUNIOR FAIR LIVESTOCK ENTRIES All members wanting to enter livestock in the Putnam County Junior Fair must complete a Junior Fair Entry Form. Junior Fair Entry Forms will be available at the Extension Office for advisors to pick up for their club members. All information to complete this form must be obtained from the Putnam County Fair Premium Book. Please be sure to use the class names and numbers listed in the Junior Fair section (back half) and not the open class. This form does not enter your project(s) in the open class show. YOU must enter all open class animals at the Putnam County Fair Office. Junior Fair Livestock Entries Due Friday, June 8, 2018 All entries turned in after the 8th will be charged a $10.00 late fee per week unitl the form is turned in. NO FORMS will be accepted 72 hours prior to the start of the fair. Putnam County Extension/2018 8

11 GUIDELINES FOR 4-H CLUBS AND ADVISORS 1. It is required that your 4-H club hold at least 8 meetings or activities during the year. All members/advisors are expected to attend at least 6 club meetings in order to be considered complete for the year H clubs may organize when a minimum of 5 youth express an interest in membership. At least 1 adult (18 years or older) must agree to register as the club advisor. 4-H clubs are encouraged to draw up constitutions. Rules and by-laws must meet the minimum regulations set for by the OSU Extension and the Putnam County 4-H Council. Clubs are urged to establish regulations which may include policies for dues, number of members in club, types of projects which may be allowed, meeting attendance, and project completion requirements set forth by the County 4-H staff. 3. ALL NEW ADVISORS MUST complete an application form and attend NEW ADVISOR ORIENTATION meeting (see calendar) and adhere to volunteer selection guidelines set forth by Ohio State University Extension prior to receiving 4-H Advisor Status. 4. The Standards of Behavior form must be signed and on file at the Extension Office for all volunteers. All advisors must abide by the guidelines listed on the Standards of Behavior document. 5. All 4-H project books are to be evaluated by the club advisor. The only books to be turned in to the Extension Office are the club s secretary /treasurer books and the financial form for honor club. These books are due on August 3 rd along with the Honor Club application form. Advisor must fill out the honor club form. 6. All advisor must attend either the Advisor Kick-off meeting held at the beginning of the 4-H season or the EEERA advisor training held in February. (See Calendar) 7. Advisors are encouraged to inform the Extension Office of problems of a club nature when they arise. 8. All clubs must meet chartering guidelines. Check with OSU Extension for details and timeline. 4-H ADVISOR INFORMATION Putnam County 4-H Council - Members of the 4-H Council serve to give suggestions and evaluate the Putnam County 4-H Program. If you have questions or suggestions for improving the county program, feel free to contact one of these individuals. Date, place, and program is determined by the 4-H Council. Each advisor will receive a certificate of recognition. All advisors will also be invited to attend an Ohio Volunteer Conference including a luncheon to recognize advisors completing 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40 & over years of service. This will be held in Columbus. Honor Club Award - As a part of the 4-H Advisor Recognition program, a certificate is presented to each 4-H Honor Club. Honor Club applications must be turned in with Secretary /Treasurer books & financial form by August 3rd. Putnam County Extension/2018 9

12 PROJECT GUIDELINES / EXHIBIT REQUIREMENTS A listing of 4-H project guidelines and exhibit requirements for Putnam County 4-H will be included with each member s project book(s). In order to standardize judging as much as possible, all members who bring their project(s) to judging and the fair should follow the judging and exhibit requirements listed for each project(s). Members who fail to do so may be penalized at the discretion of the respective judge. A, B, C INTERVIEW GRADE GUIDELINES For 4-H project interviews, judges will award grades based on the following guidelines: A - A member will receive an A for their project interview if they meet ALL the project requirements listed for the project and they demonstrate adequate knowledge of the project. For most projects, the requirements include: bringing complete and/or up-to-date project books and record books, an exhibit or display, and constructed items, etc. B - A member will receive a B for their project interview if they meet merely SOME of the project requirements and demonstrate only a fair amount of knowledge. The following examples would constitute receiving a B interview grade (if required for your project): *forgetting project books and record books *not having books completed or up-to-date *forgetting your sewing pattern *not having an exhibit or display C - A member will receive a C for their project interview if they do not meet ANY of the project requirements listed for their project and/or demonstrate little or no knowledge of project taken. Livestock Skillathon grades will be determined by a point system on each of the various stations. Many projects require an exhibit or poster for judging. Although displays are encouraged, posters are acceptable. Listed below are some guidelines for making posters. Members are not limited on number of posters, but each one used should follow the guidelines. 1. Remember only one poster should be displayed at the fair for each project. (Need to ask advisors what size they want in the booth.) 2. Make is as colorful and attractive as possible. Any color may be used as long as it has good visibility. 3. Make your lettering large enough to be read from a distance of 4 to 8 feet. Captions should be made in bold face lettering. 4. Exhibitor s name and club should be on the back of the poster. 5. Central theme of the poster must be easily seen and understood. Putnam County Extension /

13 PUTNAM COUNTY 4-H PROJECT JUDGING SCHEDULE Please note that this is the H Project Judging Schedule. Projected enrollment could force us to make minor changes in which days projects are judged. All 4-H Members and Advisors will be notified of these changes and will have a complete judging schedule sent with the monthly newsletter in May. Please be sure to check with your club advisor before coming to judging. Judging Date Projects to Be Judged Comments Early Bird Judging Wednesday, June 12th Any member who has a conflict with the regular judging dates can schedule a time to be judged at the Extension office with exception of livestock exhibitors. Judging will be done by appointments only. *Members will not be eligible for county 4-H placings. Livestock Skillathon Judging Thursday, June 14th Livestock projects only! Including horses & dogs Any member wanting to exhibit a livestock project at the fair must have their skillathon grade completed prior to fair. Special Interest (Home Economics) Judging Tuesday, June 19th All special interest projects will be judged on Tuesday this year. Judging will be s cheduled by project areas. Miscellaneous Judging Wednesday, June 20th Cats, small animals, bicycles, woodworking, crops, natural resources, plants, airplanes, rockets, lawn care, welding, and others Judging will be scheduled by project areas. *Members are asked to leave projects they plan to exhibit at the fair in their club booth after judging. Livestock Skillathon Make-up Judging Thursday, June 21 st All livestock projects including dogs will be interview/ judged. 4-H members will participate in various skillathon stations. Judging will be scheduled by project areas. All members must participate in an interview judging in order to have a complete 4-H project and be eligible to exhibit at the fair. Members planning to exhibit livestock must take part in a skillathon judging prior to exhibiting their animal at the fair. Livestock exhibitors who do not attend Livestock Skillathon Judging must attend the Make-up judging at the Extension Office in order to show at the fair. Putnam County Extension /

14 4-H MEMBER ACTIVITIES AND OPPORTUNITIES PUTNAM COUNTY 4-H CAMP - The H Camp will be held Friday, July 13 through Tuesday, July 17 at 4- H Camp Palmer. Camp is open to all youth in third grade to the completion of 8th grade who are enrolled in a 4-H Club. Camp is an opportunity to meet new friends, experience new things, and enjoy the outdoors. Registration forms are sent to all eligible members in early June. Mark your calendars now! Refer to the awards opportunities page for camp scholarship information COUNTY JUNIOR LEADERSHIP CLUB - This is a county-wide 4-H youth organization whose basic goal is to develop leadership and provide community service. These youth are in turn expected to provide assistance to advisors and younger members in their local club. Members must be at least a freshman in high school (15-19 years old) and have successfully completed one year of 4-H Club work in order to join J.L. 4-H CAMP COUNSELOR - Youth that are at least current freshman in high school desiring to be a camp counselor need to submit an application form to the Extension Office by December 1, The counselor interviews will be scheduled for December 20th, and 21 st, from 2:30PM to 4:00 PM and December 22 nd from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM. Individuals need to be able to display leadership abilities, cooperate in a group, and assist in planning the camp program. Due to the planning involved counselors must be committed to attending all meetings. (Counselors selected will be responsible for paying a portion of the camp fee.) CARteens - The Ohio State University Extension's 4-H CARteen Program is a traffic safety program for first time juvenile traffic offenders. The program's primary goal is to reduce the number of repeat juvenile offenders. therefore, the participants attend only one session. Program topics include drinking and driving, seatbelt safety, consequences of unsafe driving, and tips for safer driving. The CAR in CARteens stands for caution and responsibility while Teens refers to the teenagers who help prepare and present the program. A program might include video presentations, speeches given by CARteen members, personal testimonies from law enforcement personnel and medical professionals, skits demonstrations, etc. Responsibilities as a CARteen: assist with planning program format present speeches or give personal testimony arrange for guest speakers and send thank-you notes after the program assist with record keeping prepare evaluation forms assist with tallying evaluation forms be a good driver and a role model for your peers JUNIOR FAIR BOARD - Members must be Freshman through Senior in High School and have exhibited three years at the county fair. Junior Fair Board members must be willing to assume leadership responsibilities and assist in carrying out the Junior Fair Program. Members serve a two-year term on the board and must be a 4- H and/or FFA exhibitor. Also, a maximum of eleven at-large positions, which are one year terms, may be filled as the need arises at the discretion of the selection committee. Members meeting the above requirements must submit an application form to the Extension Office by December 1, 2018 to serve for the next year. Interviews are held in December 20th and 21st from 2:30PM to 4:00PM and December 22 nd from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM. Applications are available at the Extension Office. These demonstrations must be related to their project area. Advisors must turn in entries for each participant prior to judging. (A sample score sheet is included in this handbook.) HEALTH & SAFETY SPEAKING CONTEST - This activity will be judged at Kalida during Special Interest Judging. There is no limit on the number of entries a club may send. Advisors are asked to turn in entries for each participant prior to judging. No props are to be used in the county and district activity. Please do not use the same topic as in the previous year. HEALTH & SAFETY TEAM TALK/SKIT CONTEST - This activity is will be judged at Kalida during Special interest Judging. There is no limit on the number of entries a club may have. Advisors are asked to turn in entries for each team prior to judging. (NEW) Teams are to select a topic of Health or Safety that reflects family living, whether it is in the home, on the farm, on the highway, or in a public place. 4-H PHOTO CONTEST - NEW THIS YEAR: 1. This exhibit is open to 4-H members ages Participation is NOT limited to just those 4-H ers enrolled in photography projects. 3. All entry photos must have been taken by the 4-H er submitting the entry during the contest year. 4. Entrants must submit their photos within the division that applies (Junior/ages 9-12 OR Senior/ages 13-19) 5. Each entrant may submit only one photo in each of the three categories ("4-H in Action", "Nature' Beauty", "Light and Shadow"). This means that each individual 4-H er may have as many as three entries so long as they submit each entry in a different category. 6. Photos may be in color OR black-and-white. 7. Please, please send your entries at the highest image resolution possible so that we can display highquality images. 8. Photos will be displayed in the Jr. Fair Building the week of the fair. 9. Entries should be framed and photo not larger than a 5 x 7. PUTNAM COUNTY 4-H MEMBER AWARDS PUTNAM COUNTY 4-H CAREER ACHIEVEMENT AWARD - Each year a $50.00 Wal Mart card is presented to the top two Putnam County 4-Her s at the Annual 4-H Achievement Day Program. One is selected from the Agriculture/Miscellaneous project area and one from the Home Economics project area. Each is selected on the basis of their overall 4-H career record. Members need to fill out an Achievement Form and have an advisor fill out the recommendation form. 4-H CAMP SCHOLARSHIPS - Each year a number of 4-H members are selected to receive partial scholarships to attend Putnam County 4-H Camp. Any 4-H er of camping age is eligible to apply. Camp will be held July 13-17, Camp Scholarship Application forms are due to the Extension Office by May 15th. Putnam County Extension /

16 PUTNAM COUNTY 4-H MEMBER AWARDS CONTINUED JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS - Youth ages years old desiring to apply for a Junior Achievement Award can do so by submitting an application form by May 15th to the Extension Office. Gift cards from Wal Mart of $20.00 will be awarded to a number of applicants each year. (Previous winners not eligible.) JUNIOR FAIR KING AND QUEEN - The applicant must complete: an application form, essay on Why I Want to Become Putnam County Jr. Fair King/Queen, and also a 2 page resume listing their various activities and accomplishments. All applicants will be interviewed by a panel of judges. The judges will select the King, Queen, and members of the Court based on the application, resume, and interview. Announcement is made prior to the Band Show at the Putnam County Fair. Application deadline is May 18th. STATE LEADERSHIP CAMP - Each year two outstanding Junior Leaders are awarded the privilege of attending the State Leadership Camp held in TBA at Camp Ohio, Utica, Ohio. Interested individuals must be at least 14 years old, completed three years of 4-H, and be a member of the County Junior Leadership Club. A State Camp Award Application must be submitted to the Extension office by May15th. Two scholarships are awarded to each county by Nationwide Insurance Co. and the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation. (Previous winners not eligible). STATE CONSERVATION CAMP - Each camp year two older youth are selected by the 4-H Council to attend the State Conservation at Camp Ohio in Utica, Ohio June 2-6, Those individuals interested in learning more about conservation need to submit a State Camp Award Application to the Extension Office by May 15th. The camp will be held in June TBA. Participants must be at least 14 years old and have completed three years of 4-H. (Previous winners not eligible). 4-H SEA CAMP - Youth ages 15 years or older may apply for a scholarship which will pay 1/2 of the registration fee to attend 4-H Sea Camp. A State Camp Application must be submitted to the Extension Office by May 15th. The award will be given to one older 4-H member to attend Sea Camp at Kelley s Island, TBA. The purpose of Sea Camp is to provide specialized instruction in marine skills and aquatic education through hands-on lake-related activities. (Previous winners not eligible.) STATE 4-H AMBASSADOR PROGRAM - Each year, county delegates are selected to serve a one year term as a State 4-H Ambassador. Selection is based on accomplishments in leadership, public speaking, and community service. Following training at 4-H Youth Expo, Ambassadors are then eligible to represent 4-H youth at various state and local events. Interested individuals must be 14 years old. Application forms are available from the Extension Office and are due February 1st. FAIR PREMIUMS AND RIBBONS - The Putnam County Agricultural Society provides premiums and ribbons for all Junior Fair Exhbitors. SPECIAL INTEREST SWEEPSTAKES - General guidelines 1. Must be a 4-H member enrolled in Putnam County 2. Must be enrolled in at least one special interest/misc. project for the current year 3. Display the projects at the county fair 4. Complete the Sweepstakes Application and return it to the Extension Office by the deadline. 5. Can only be eligible to win every other year in each division. 6. 17 OTHER STATE WIDE 4-H OPPORTUNITIES OHIO 4-H ACHIEVEMENT RECORD All 4-Her s 14 years of age and older are eligible to complete the Ohio 4-H Achievement Record to compete for various state opportunities and recognition. Opportunities available include: State Achievement Awards in various project areas, Ohio 4-H Scholarships, State Jr. Fair Board, and other conferences. District nominees in each category are selected to send down for state consideration. Selections are based on program and/or project work, participation in 4-H events, exhibited leadership, community service, and perceived interest. Forms are available on line at putnam.osu.edu and must be turned in by January 26th. COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS 4-H ers entering college as freshman to an accredited university, OSU or OSU branch, may apply for a number of scholarships offered through 4-H. Those applying for Ohio Scholarships must complete an Ohio 4-H Achievement Record. All application forms are available online at putnam.osu.edu and must be turned in by January 26th. INTERNATIONAL 4-H YOUTH EXCHANGE (IFYE) Young adults, years of age and former 4-H ers are eligible to become IFYE delegates to other nations. Applications and additional information are available at the Extension Office. CARVING NEW IDEAS This leadership workshop held at Camp Ohio in Utica, Ohio is designed to help individuals works as a member of a group/team. This is done by participating in workshops and sharing ideas with other 4-H members throughout the state of Ohio. All teen 4-Her s are welcome and encouraged to attend Carving New Ideas, held in December each year. For more information and possible scholarship availabilities, contact the 4-H Extension Educator. STATE FAIR PARTICIPATION In the Ohio 4-H Family Guide, many projects are shown as being eligible for STATE FAIR. However, this does not indicate that someone will be sent in every project listed in the Family Guide. It only means that the project is eligible for judging at the State Fair. The county judges will make the decisions as to who will be the representatives at the State Fair. Therefore, not all projects area winners are automatically eligible and all projects may not be represented. State Fair participants will be notified by mail after the Putnam County Fair. STATE FAIR LIVESTOCK PARTICIPATION: Any individual wishing to exhibit an animal at the Ohio State Fair must submit entries before June 20th. To enter, youth must be a current member of a 4-H or FFA club, be enrolled in that project area and be eligible to compete at the county level. 18 4-H HEALTH AND SAFETY SPEAKING & SKIT CONTESTS *Contests held at Special Interest Judging in Kalida* 1.) Health and Safety Officers should encourage members to participate in the contests. You can also enter yourself. 2.) Speech/Skit topics can cover any area of health or safety that affects family living - whether it is in the home, on the farm, on the highway, or in public places. 3.) HEALTH & SAFETY SPEECHES JUNIOR DIVISION: (4-Her s who are 9-13 years of age as of January 1 of the current year) Members should prepare speeches no less than 2½ minutes and no longer than 3½ minutes length. Those speeches under 2 ½ and over 3½ will be penalized 10 points. SENIOR DIVISION: (4-Her s who are 14 years old and over of January 1 current year) members should prepare speeches no less than 4 minutes and not over 5½ minutes in length. Those under4 minutes or over 5½ minutes will be penalized 10 points. 4.) HEALTH & SAFETY SKITS *NO VISUAL AIDS OF ANY KIND MAY BE USED IN INDIVIDUAL SPEECHES* A) Skits must consist of at least 2, but no more than 5 members. No age divisions exist. B) Props can be used, but no posters or printed materials are permitted. C) Time limit is 5-8 minutes. D) Each member of the skit must have at least 1 minute of speaking time. E) All participants should be part of gathering the research information for the skit. F) Members participating in the team skit category must use a new topic and materials each year. 5.) Participants should dress appropriately for the type of speech/skit given. 6.) Winners will be selected in the Junior, Senior, and Skit divisions at the county contest. 7.) All Health & Safety speeches are eligible to compete at the State Fair. All Healthy and Safety Skits are eligible to compete at the State Fair. 8.) Entry forms should be submitted to the Extension Office prior to the fair by the club advisor. Clubs may enter as many participants as they wish. Putnam County Extension /

19 COUNTY DEMONSTRATIONS & ILLUSTRATED TALK CONTEST *Contest held during the Putnam County Fair* A County-Wide Demonstration and Illustrated Talk Contest is held each year to encourage members to actively pursue excellence in presenting demonstrations and talks. The purpose is to pass along knowledge which a member has gained through their 4-H project. A good demonstration or talk takes preparation, but the final product can be worth all the effort. Illustrated Talk or Demonstration----without use of computer technology Senior Individual (14 & up) Senior Team (age 14 & up Junior Individual (age 8-11 and in the 3 rd grade) Intermediate Individual (age 12-13) Junior Team (age 8-11) Intermediate Team (age 12-13) The presenter uses appropriate props and other visual aides to teach others about a subject or how to do something. May use charts, posters, pictures to deliver their Illustrated Talk or to stress points with their Demonstration. PowerPoint or computer generated messages are not used in this class. Presenters are evaluated on their ability to present a speech. See score sheet for more information on the areas of evaluation. A demonstration should last between 6-12 minutes. Scores will be reduced four points for times over or under. Illustrated Talks or Demonstrations---with the addition of Computer Technology Intermediate Individual (age 12-13) Senior Individual (age 14 and up) The presenter uses appropriate props and computer generated visual aides to teach others about a subject or how to do something. Examples: A demonstration may be delivered in this category. PowerPoint type slides may be added in addition to other props to help present their message. An Illustrated Talk may be delivered in this category, with the member using PowerPoint type technology to present their entire visual message; accompanied by their live narration Requires live speech delivered along with the PowerPoint message. (No pre-recorded narration) Member is evaluated on their communication skills and their ability to effectively use technology within their Illustrated Talk or Demonstration. Illustrated Talks/Demonstrations should be 6-12 minutes in length with four points deducted for times over or under. 4-H Multi-Media Presentations Senior Individual (age 14 and up) The Multi-Media Presentation should share a message related to 4-H experiences or 4-H project work. This is a fully automated, stand alone presentation using Video, Pictures, Slides, PowerPoint or other home/office computer generated programs along with sound/narration to convey a message. The program is free standing and only requires an introduction by the participant. It should include recorded visual, sound, and narration to convey a message. Evaluation is based upon the creative and professional use of technology, as well as the ability to communicate a message, with a clear opening, body, and conclusion. See evaluation tool. The Member will be interviewed and must be able to explain the steps taken to develop the multi-media presentation and knowledge of the topic of their presentation. Presenters will introduce themselves and the title of their topic. At the conclusion of the recording, they may address questions from the audience, followed by an interview with the judge. Presenters are required to furnish their own equipment for this presentation. One presentation will be selected from the Clock Trophy Winners, for a presentation at a State 4-H function such as: The State 4-H Volunteer Conference or the Celebration of Youth. Audio Visual Presentations should be 6-7 minutes in length. Four points will be deducted for over and under times. Timing of the presentation is from the time the pre-recorded presentation begins and ends. The introduction, and questions and answers are not included in the timing. Putnam County Extension /
