3 2018 National Junior Santa Gertrudis Show Texarkana, Arkansas Dear Juniors and Parents: I am excited to welcome you to the Natural State of Arkansas and the 2018 National Junior Santa Gertrudis Show! Texarkana is located within the Ark-La-Tex sub region of southwest Arkansas known as the Piney Woods, an oak-hickory forest. Its economy is driven by agriculture and its outdoor tourism. Texarkana is a twin city with neighboring Texarkana, Texas. The motto of the metropolitan area is 'A City So Great It Took Two States' and offers many family activities. The area boasts of museums and historical landmarks, hiking and biking trails, great fishing, a haunted ghost walk, farmer's markets and the Holiday Springs Water Park. It is also home to the Four States Fair held each September. This year s show will be held at the Four States Fairgrounds, June 23-30, Barns will be open for arrival starting at noon on Saturday June 23, We have a week packed with activities and lots of Gert Family Fellowship. Be sure to take note of the schedule because there have been many changes to hopefully make your experience more enjoyable. In your preparation for the show, please read over all the rules and regulations in this packet and make sure your registration and health papers are in order. The summers can be hot and humid, but what s a National without a little sweat! So, pack those fans and shade cloths because it will be Gert Times across State Lines. 4 2018 National Junior Santa Gertrudis Show Four States Fairgrounds Texarkana, Texas All EXHIBITORS AND NON-EXHIBITORS IMPORTANT INFORMATION It is the responsibility of the exhibitor and/or the parent/guardian to read and understand all ********parts of this show packet and attached rules******** ENTRY DEADLINE and ENTRIES Everyone must enter on-line through the SGBI website santagertrudis.com select the JUNIOR PAGE. Read the instruction page found in this packet (on Pages 34-38) for entering on-line. ONLINE ENTRY RECEIPT Must Be Postmarked by 12:00 am (midnight), May 15, All entries must be submitted with a copy of registration papers, wholesome assurance statement, copy of online entry receipt, and required fees made payable to: 2018 NJSGS. If entries are POSTMARKED after May 15, 2018 a late charge will apply up until June 1, No entries accepted after June 1, SUBSTITUTIONS Substitution of animals is permitted. Substitution Fee is $10.00 per substitution. BEDDING: Shavings $6.00/bag $7.00/pelleted (include on entry form) HAY - $7.25/ bale ***The number of bedding or Hay will be RESERVED for you PAYMENT will be made to the vendor at the fairgrounds*** CAMPER - $30.00 per night/per space (include on entry form) **Pay at fairgrounds** STALLING Please turn in number needed for stall space for Herdsman Contest. Affiliates that turn in numbers will be stalled first then others will be stalled using a percentage of head entered. TIE-OUTS There is open green spaces around the grounds with limited shade. There are several large barns that will have space for tie outs. If tie outs are under the barns no bedding like shavings is allowed. Please plan for the weather all types. Need shade, water hoses, panels, etc. when making tie outs. Big Event Party Rentals has been contacted for tent rental. Please contact them directly BANQUET TICKETS- Will need to be picked up in the office Seating will be assigned this year. QUEEN AND PRINCESS CANDIDATES/DIRECTOR CANDIDATES - Candidates will be able to campaign the whole week of the show, beginning at 8:00 am on Sunday, June 24, Remember, those running for an elected position, DO NOT use tape or adhesive that will take off paint, we DO NOT want to pay for any damages. Please be creative in campaigning. Anything you put up must come down! Voting will take place at Ballot Box on Monday 12-2 and 6:30-7:30, Tuesday 11-2, Wed BE SURE AND HAVE YOUR HERD NUMBER these will be the only times you get to vote, any runoffs or ties will be voted on at the general meeting Wednesday at 5:00 pm. ATV s, are allowed but one must obtain permit in the Junior show office and at a cost of $ which goes toward the show. Must have valid DL to drive on grounds. DOGS: No dogs except at Campsites. Must be on leash. NEVER bring dogs into the Barn. If you have questions, please contact the show committee. 3

5 CATTLE CHECK-IN Cattle check-in will be on Sunday 11:30. If you have cattle that are tattooed, please clean the ears prior to checking in. Registration papers will be checked so that numbers correspond to animal. ** Check the brand and/or tattoo numbers of your animal(s) entered to ensure they match with the registration papers. Brand/Tattoos entered on the entry form must match with the identification number on the registration papers or you will not be allowed to show your animal(s).** 2018 Health Certificate Requirements (CVI Certificate of Veterinary Inspection) This information has been obtained from the Arkansas Department of Agriculture - Cattle Requirements Summary. The complete document can be viewed at: Exhibition Requirements VERY IMPORTANT 1. Permit not required if State is TB free 2. Cattle must be accompanied by Official Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI) dated not more than 30 days prior to exhibition. a. Cattle may enter without negative Tuberculosis test, if they originate from an Accredited Free herd or state. b. Brucellosis not required if from a Certified free herd (#on CVI) or Class Free State/Area (All Free). If not, all intact > 18 months of age or if already calved or in the 3 stage of preg. Test w/in 30 days. TB Must be from TB free State (All Free) or Herd (# and test date on CVI) or test negative within 60 days. c. Must have individual ID on CVI d. Heifers 4-12 months of age must be calfhood vac for Brucellosis if not from Free herds, States, Areas. Trich Bulls <24 months of age = Virgin statement, > 24 mos= negative test (1 PCR or 3 cultures) w/in 30 days unless direct to slaughter or for exhibition/rodeo. 4

Rule J is important for entry. Large classes may be split. ON-LINE ENTRY: You must enter on-line see Directions page ENTRY SHEETS: An entry WORKSHEET is enclosed for your convenience (see page 39). ONLY mail in the ONLINE ENTRY RECEIPT at the conclusion of the online entry process, copies of registration certificates, wholesome assurance statement, and your money for entry (see pages 37-38). EXHIBITORS: STALLING: OTHER: ANIMAL IDENTIFICATION: All exhibitors must be paid, active junior members of SGBI in order to enter the NJSGS. Mark your online entry for the specific group or affiliate with which you want to be stalled. Groups will be adhered to as space permits. All cattle entered in the show may be used as a placing animal in the livestock judging contest. All cattle entered in the 2018 NJSGS MUST have a permanent identification either a brand (fire or freeze) or an ear tattoo. Animals must be identified in one of these manners before you get to the grounds. If tattooed, please clean ears before checking in. 7

10 National Junior Santa Gertrudis Show 2018 NJSGS RULES AND REGULATIONS GOVERNED BY SGBI RULES AND REGULATIONS Approved Santa Gertrudis Open and Junior Show (*See Enclosed Shows & Exhibits Rules Pages 40-44) A. Exhibitors and Non-Exhibitors must be (8) EIGHT years old or enrolled in the third grade as of June 1, 2018, and through 20 years of age as of June 1, 2018 to be eligible to participate. 1. Junior: 8 years and/or third grade through 12 years of age 2. Intermediate: 13 years of age through 16 years of age 3. Senior: 17 years of age through 20 years of age. B. All exhibitors and non-exhibitors must be bona fide junior members of Santa Gertrudis Breeders International. This means the junior has paid all current dues and fees with no outstanding balances on their accounts. C. ONLINE ENTRY RECEIPT, copy of registration papers, wholesome assurance statement, and required fees are due in the SGBI office by May 15, Please note your entries MUST BE POSTMARKED NO LATER THAN May 15, 2018 in order to participate in the 2018 National Junior Santa Gertrudis Show. The areas of competition in which an individual will participate in must be designated at the same time, entry should be made at the SGBI web page (Junior tab) where animals are entered. Entry fees must accompany the ONLINE ENTRY RECEIPT and wholesome assurance sheet see pages Entries not paid in full will not be processed. D NJSGS entry fees are listed in this packet. There will be LATE ENTRIES from May 16 June 1, 2018 (see EXTRA charges page 6). Please have all paperwork (registration/transfer work) on animals completed prior to April 15, E. Non-exhibitor participant fee is $20.00 per person and is due in the SGBI office on or before May 15, 2018 after May 15, 2018 until June 1, 2018 non-exhibitor may enter for a fee of $40.00 per person. F. All entries and fees must be returned to Santa Gertrudis Breeders International, P.O. Box 1257, Kingsville, Texas G. Additional banquet tickets will be available at the show through Tuesday, June 26 th. Pre-purchased tickets will be available for pick up at Show Office. Purchasing upon entry is encouraged. H. Junior member/exhibitors will maintain possession and utilize best management practices of their entries from the date of ownership through the final day of the National Junior Santa Gertrudis Heifer Show under the supervision of a County Agent; Vocational Agriculture Instructor; Designated 4-H Adult Leader; Home Economics Instructor; Affiliate President; Legal Guardian and/or Family consisting of a relative by blood, marriage, adoption or any person who resides in the same household or as a functional unit in the same household. I. No participant will be discriminated against as a result of a physical, emotional or mental handicap. The only requirement is to specify on the entry form so accommodations can be made. J. Any heifers in classes 1-11 must have been registered in the name of the exhibitor by April 1, 2018 and must have been in the possession and care of the exhibitor by April 1, Heifers in classes must have been registered in the name of the exhibitor by November 1, 2017 and must have been in the care and possession of the exhibitor by Nov 1, (See rule 7 of the Approved Santa Gertrudis

11 Open & Jr. Shows- Rules & Regs. -page 40) K. All animals must be REGISTERED and PERMANENTLY identified with a brand ID or an ear tattoo. All animals must be registered in the exhibitor s name, not a ranch name or joint names. Exhibitors and animals not adhering to this rule will not be allowed to show. L. Entries must be exhibited by the owner unless he or she owns two animals in the same class whereupon another bona fide junior exhibitor may exhibit one of the heifers. M. Official health certificates must accompany all cattle and must be presented to representatives of the local Animal Health Commission at the time the cattle arrive on the show premises (see enclosed regulations). Please have a copy of your veterinary health certificate upon arrival. N. All heifers will be pre-stalled. However, county extension agents, vocational agriculture instructors or affiliate associations who desire to be stalled as a group must notify the show at the time they enter as to the actual number of heifers that their county, chapter or affiliate intends to bring to the show. Otherwise, individual animals will be assigned stalls on a random basis. O. Any junior exhibitor that is a qualified entrant to show and cannot due to illness or injury during the show, may have his or her animal exhibited by another bona fide junior exhibitor with prior approval of a SGBI official. P. A junior member who is not exhibiting a heifer may participate in all contests except Showmanship. He or she should register as a non-exhibitor. Q. Junior member exhibitors participating in the NJSGS will dress appropriately in collared shirts with sleeves, belts, and with no midriffs showing. Appropriate pants and footwear no tennis shoes. No baseball caps. R. Two-year-old heifers must have produced a calf or be safe in calf as verified by a pregnancy certificate and included in health certificate signed by a licensed veterinarian. The certificate must be presented at the time the animal is checked in. S. Cow/Calf Pairs A cow shown with a calf at side, the calf must be her natural calf meeting the SGBI Standard of Excellence, meaning the calf must be registrable. If the cow has a calf that does not meet the Standard of Excellence, possible crossbred calf, the calf is not eligible to enter the show arena with the cow. The cow is eligible to show in her respective class and the judge will be notified as to why her calf is not present. (The cow must be shown by the owner.) Calf MUST be exhibited by bona fide junior exhibitor. T. Star-Five Female A Star-Five Female is a recorded female that is either 50% or 75% Santa Gertrudis breed with one parent being a registered purebred Santa Gertrudis. These females must be recorded with SGBI and have a recordation certificate. U. Each animal shall be presented in the show ring in its natural conformation and structure without alteration or modification. Alteration or modification shall be defined to include any surgical, chemical, electrical, or other appearance change for cosmetic purposes, save only branding, tattooing, foot trimming or dehorning. Silicon injection or other injections for cosmetic purpose shall be prohibited. V. No pumping or filling of an animal with liquid, air or any other substance is allowed. Violations will result in disqualification and banning from all shows of that exhibitor and/or owner. W. Conduct and Disciplinary Action All junior members of SGBI in attendance at the 2018 National Junior Santa Gertrudis Show are expected to conduct themselves in a manner becoming of a junior member of SGBI and abide by the on-site directives of the host state. Violations of the above standard include, but are not limited to: misrepresentation of animals (all animals must be registered and meet breed standards), vandalism, theft, fighting, unsportsmanlike conduct, failure to comply with the directives of officials, being in possession or under the influence of intoxicating or prohibited substances on or about the grounds or willful violation of rules. Any violation of state and 10

12 federal laws will be turned over to local authorities for investigation. The SGBI Youth Activities Committee will mandate any other disciplinary action. X. Liability Provisions all contestants must supply SGBI with a signed release statement from parent(s) or legal guardian before being allowed to participate. This release statement is provided on each individual entry form. The National Junior Santa Gertrudis Show committee and/or any of its employees and the host fairgrounds and/or any of its employees are not responsible for any accidents or thefts. Y. All junior participants must return the Wholesome Assurance Form. It must be signed by the exhibitor and a parent. Form MUST be included with your entries when mailed to SGBI. Z. Santa Gertrudis Breeders International and its representatives reserve the right to require any test deemed necessary to verify the accuracy of an entry, classification and/or the pedigree of exhibited Santa Gertrudis animals, including calves exhibited at the side of a Santa Gertrudis female. The National Junior Santa Gertrudis Show consists of six divisions: owned purebred females, owned purebred bulls, bred and owned purebred females, best of polled purebred females, donated heifers, and star five females. All entries must be registered/recorded with Santa Gertrudis Breeders International and meet the SGBI Standard of Excellence and must be groomed in accordance with the Shows and Exhibits standards: #8 Fitting - Shows and Exhibits Rules: a. Purebred fitting All purebred animals must be exhibited with the hair brushed down on the entire body, legs, and tail with no foreign objects attached to the animal in a manner as to alter the animal s conformation or change its appearance. Exhibitors failing to abide by this rule will not be allowed to show. PUREBRED FITTING CONT. Specifically, all hair must be brushed down slick; head clipped smooth; underline clipped blending sides; udder and teats clipped with no long hair to emphasize udder; ears clipped as to environmental and local standards; neck and brisket clipped; body clip using common sense as to season; leg hair clipped and do not leave long from hock or knee to hoof; tail head clipped; pull switch or brush out (no ball, etc.); trim tail to personal preference. b. Star Five fitting Star Five exhibits are not subject to purebred clipping rules. Entries are to be fitted blow and go. Hair may be brushed according to preference with no foreign substances / fitting materials on any part of the body. Standard of Excellence Please read and understand: Purebred Santa Gertrudis must meet appearance standards. For full explanation go to look under Performance then go to Breed Standards this will explain what conditions could cause disqualification of your animal. Please note one of the most obvious problems is Hair color. White outside the underline or other spotting in other parts of the body could cause disqualification. Brindle in any extent could cause disqualification. There should be no more than 50% of the underline white, white must remain behind the front legs and may not extend past the udder or testicles. Any questions please call a member of Breed Standards Committee. Please read carefully, if you have any questions please contact the SGBI office at (361) before the show begins. Do not wait to ask questions once the show beginsit may be too late. 11

13 Rules for 2018 show: HALTERED BULL SHOW 1. Ownership and possession rules will follow the approved SGBI Rules & Regulations Open & Junior Show Rules as specifically stated in rule 7A & 7B. 2. Born on or after March 1, Haltered & broke to lead. 4. Any calf six months old or older must have a permanent nose ring and a lead strap attached to it and in hand. Any one leading a bull of this age on the premises of the show at any time must have a lead in the nose and use it to control said bull. 5. Any entry that is unruly and poses danger to other exhibitors, or if exhibitor loses control of their animal twice during the class, the animal will be dismissed from the show arena by the judge or arena director or designee. 6. No bulls are allowed to show in Showmanship Contest. 7. All bulls must be weaned and cannot be nursing at the Junior National Show, unless they are also entered as a cow/calf pair. 8. During the bull show, Junior Board Members will assist in the arena. Experienced adults will be allowed in the ring as assigned by the Bull Show Coordinator. 9. There will be catch pens in various places in the arena. 10. All age eligible bulls must participate in the Better Beef Contest (10-15 months). 11. All age eligible bulls will be DNA tested at the NJSGS. 12. Only purebred Santa Gertrudis bulls will be eligible to participate in the bull show. 14 DESCRIPTIONS OF THE SPECIAL SHOWS FRIDAY SHOWS Donated Heifer Show All general rules apply to the Donated Heifer Show. Only heifers awarded during the 2017 NJSGHS are eligible for the 2018 Donated Heifer Show. Age and ownership dates are applicable. Donated Heifer entries MUST BE DESIGNATED during the ONLINE ENTRY process. This is class 36. No entry fee. Star-Five Female Show The Star-Five Female Show will follow the same animal age and ownership guidelines as the purebred female show. Clarification of a Star-Five Female by SGBI Rules is as follows. A Star Five Female is a recorded female that is either 50% or 75% Santa Gertrudis breed. These females must be recorded with SGBI and have a recordation certificate. All Star-Five females will show together regardless of percentage Santa Gertrudis. Star-Five Female entries MUST BE DESIGNATED during the ONLINE ENTRY process These are classes Entry fee is $40/head. Bred and Owned Show* All general rules will apply to the Bred and Owned Show. Purebred females ONLY are allowed to show in the Bred and Owned Show. Class breaks are set, please see enclosed sheet in this packet. Bred and Owned females are defined as those which the exhibitor has solely and continuously owned from conception until the time of the show. Therefore, the junior exhibitor must be the only owner listed on the dam s registration certificate at the time of conception. The said female entry must not have been transferred out of the junior exhibitor s name before the NJSGS. Bred and Owned entries MUST BE DESIGNATED during the ONLINE ENTRY process. This consists of classes Entry fee is $15.00/head. Best of Polled Show* All general rules will apply to the Best of Polled Show. Purebred females ONLY are allowed to show in the Best of Polled Show. Only females that are deemed smooth polled (no evidence of horny tissue) by SGBI representative(s) during animal check-in will be eligible for Best of Polled consideration. 15 National Santa Gertrudis Youth Foundation Scholarship The National Santa Gertrudis Youth Foundation sponsors a college scholarship program to encourage junior members to continue their education beyond the high school level. The recipients are chosen by a scholarship committee. The amount of each scholarship is determined annually by the NSGYF Management Committee. The scholarships are awarded on the basis of membership and participation in the junior association, grades, need and the perception of the committee that the applicant will complete the future plans in higher education that he or she has. Applications can be downloaded off the SGBI website Junior page, and must be completed and returned to the SGBI office by JUNE 1, No Late Entries will be accepted. Only 2018 graduating seniors are eligible for scholarships being offered. The students must be current members (dues paid for the 2018-member year). In addition, the students must have participated in at least three (3) National Junior Santa Gertrudis Heifer Shows (the 2018 show can be included as one of the three (3)). Three totals, but not necessarily three consecutives. The Polled Santa Gertrudis Association offers a scholarship for members of the Polled Santa Gertrudis Association. Membership in the Polled Association is required for the current year. Scholarship applications will only be accepted by mail or overnight delivery to SGBI Office. No Faxed or ed copies of the scholarship application will be accepted. Graduating seniors applying for NSGYF scholarships are requested to attend the NSGJS for the interview process. Interviews will be conducted on Wednesday during the show. If a student is unable to attend the scholarship interview during the heifer show, they must give the Foundation Chairman/Scholarship committee 14 days prior notice so arrangements can be made for an alternative interview. Emergencies are exempt. Times are flexible as we know several junior members are involved in other activities. Once you receive notice on your time and there is a problem, please notify SGBI at (361) ADDITIONAL STIPULATIONS (which will be addressed in depth at scholarship meeting) 1) Membership must be maintained in SGBI for length of scholarship 2) Thankyou letters must be sent each semester. 3) Mandatory meeting before Awards Banquet one will be notified if need to attend. 14

16 Special Award Explanations Eldon Flowers Award This award is given in memory of past junior member, Eldon Flowers. Selection of the junior individual to honor with this award is based upon friendliness, helpfulness to others, attitude and care given to the junior s animal(s) as well as the junior s willingness to support the Santa Gertrudis breed. The junior individual possesses outstanding attributes for kindness, helpfulness and giving of themselves. This junior individual will be selected from both exhibitors and non-exhibitors participating in the NJSGS. Remember you as a junior member are always being watched for your actions, deeds and helpfulness. If there is someone that you think is deserving of the Eldon Flowers Award, please speak to a NJSGA Director. Honorary Junior Member(s) Honorary junior membership may be awarded to a non-junior member(s) that has made an outstanding contribution to the NJSGA to merit the recommendation from the junior membership. The junior membership shall nominate candidates from the floor at the annual meeting who are not junior members of the NJSGA. Following nomination, a vote of the general membership may grant honorary junior membership to an individual or couple. (Honorary Junior Membership is a lifetime award and may only be received once.) NJSGS High Point Junior Breeder Award This award is given to the junior member who gains the most points from cattle that were produced by each individual Junior s herd and were shown during the NJSGS - Purebred Shows and Star Five Show. The Bred & Owned Show will be used for tiebreaker purposes. NJSGS High Point Exhibitor Award This award is given to the exhibitor of the National Junior Santa Gertrudis Show who accumulates the most points with the animals they own/exhibit during the NJSGS - Purebred Shows and Star Five Show. 17 Public Speaking Contest 1) To be eligible to participate in the national Public Speaking Contest the contestant must be a member of the NJSGA. 2) Contestants will compete in their respective age divisions only. Former public speaking contest winners remain eligible for competition in their applicable age division, regardless of past wins. 3) Contestants are free to choose their subject matter. However, speech topics should pertain to the Santa Gertrudis breed, agriculture or the beef industry. 4) Contestants should present speeches composed of original material. Contestants MAY NOT repeat a speech previously used in this contest. If sources of information are used in speech preparation, the source should be cited. In speeches that address technical or scientific matter, resource information should be given. The speaker must give credit when he/she quotes directly the words or writings of another individual. 5) Each speech shall be a minimum of four (4) minutes and a maximum of seven (7) minutes in length. A maximum of twenty (20) points will be deducted for speeches under four (4) minutes or over seven (7) minutes in length. Point deductions will be left to the judges discretion. 6) Following each speech, the three-member panel of judges will be allowed to ask relevant questions to participants in ALL THREE DIVISIONS. 7) Contestants will be judged on: Subject Knowledge (20%); Organization (10%); Presentation (40%); Response to Questions (20%) and General Effectiveness (10%). 8) Contestants in each division will draw for speaking order with accommodations allowed for siblings participating in more than one division. Draw will take place one day prior to the contest; at which time, potential sibling conflicts must be identified to allow accommodations to be made. There will be a threemember judge panel for each division. 9) Contestants are permitted to use notes, but excessive reference to note cards may result in point deductions by the judge. 10) No props, visual aids, music, etc. will be permitted. 11) A designated timekeeper will record speech lengths, noting time deficits and overages. 12) At the conclusion of each speaker, judges will total scores for that speaker. 18 Sales Talk Contest The Sales Talk contest uses a live setting complete with animal and potential buyers. The contestant s effectiveness will determine his/her value as a salesperson. Contestants may use a heifer or cow as the subject of the Sales Talk. Contestants may use a heifer or cow other than their own. The contestant may hold or tie the heifer or cow, or have another junior member hold the animal during the talk. The heifer or cow is not to be groomed for show. 1) Immediately preceding the talk, contestants will be required to provide the judges with a registration certificate for the animal being sold. The judges will use the registration certificate to evaluate the accuracy of pedigree and performance information provided by the contestant and to also ask questions. 2) Contestants will be judged on their knowledge of the animal they are selling (25%); ability to relay important information about the animal (organization and style 25%; poise and delivery 25%); and their overall effectiveness in convincing the judges to buy the animal (25%). Ties will be broken by a predetermined point breakdown. 3) A contestant s score will be reduced 10% if additional materials are presented to the judges and used in the presentation, other than those listed in the above rules. 4) Sales Talk will be 5-7 minutes in length. Time elapsed will be indicated during the contest so that contestants are aware of time constraints. 5) At the conclusion of each presenter, judges will total scores for that presenter. Contestants are expected to identify, by name and function, items used in the course of beef cattle production and management. 19 LIVESTOCK JUDGING CONTEST The objective of the judging contest is to test the observation skills of contestants and expand their understanding of economically significant traits and performance data. Entry fee is $ The competition is for single entries. 2. At the official s discretion, performance data may be provided to aid in class placings. 3. Junior and Intermediate participants will be asked multiple choice questions on two classes. The Senior division will give oral reasons on one class and answer multiple choice questions on one class. 4. No reference materials allowed, except data furnished by the contest officials. 5. No talking among contestants is allowed during the contest. 6. Fifty points are available per placing class and fifty possible points for each questions and reasons class. 7. Entry Deadline is May 15,2018 YEARBOOK CONTEST ENTRIES: 1. All junior affiliates are eligible and encouraged to participate in the Yearbook Contest - one yearbook entry per junior affiliate. Contact your affiliate president or affiliate youth director for more information. No entry fee. 2. Yearbooks will be judged at the NJSGS. Yearbooks are to be submitted to the Show Office on Sunday, June 24, :00am - 5:00 p.m. CONTENT: 1. Material should cover a ONE-YEAR period beginning and ending with the National Junior Santa Gertrudis Show. 2. Arrangements of the material are left up to the discretion of the affiliate. 3. Material contained in the yearbook must include but are not limited to: a. A current membership list b. Pictures of officers and directors c. Newsletters and directories d. Pictures and stories concerning activities such as Field Days, Shows, Meetings, Sales, Banquets, Fair Booths and any other activities carried on in the Affiliate. JUDGING: 1. A competent committee of judges will be selected to place the Yearbooks. All yearbooks will remain on display during the week. 2. Covers will not be considered in the judging 3. Judging will be based on material for the CURRENT YEAR ONLY. 4. Yearbooks shall be created by Current NJSGA members only. 18

20 19 SHOWMANSHIP CONTEST RULES The Showmanship Contest evaluates an exhibitor s ability to present his/her animal during competition. The appearance, attitude and skills of each showman will be considered in the contest. Each exhibitor MUST show his/her own animal in the Showmanship Contest. This is a judged competition in the arena. The Youth Activities Committee has decided that this competition will be placed (results will be announced) by the judge in the arena that day. The top 15 participants will receive points for their placing (awards may not be presented to all 15, but points are awarded for the Byron Thoms Award). Awards will be distributed at the discretion of the show committee. The Pre-Showmanship Meeting will be held in the stands of the show ring at 8:00 am Wednesday 6/28/18, and will include BOTH exhibitors and parents. Classes will begin immediately after. Division heats will be decided at the Pre-Showmanship meeting. Exhibitors must wear their lowest exhibitor number when participating in Showmanship. Pee-Wee -no fee, Old Timers -$5.00 pot winner takes all, $15.00 fee for exhibitors. **Please select Showmanship Contest while entering ONLINE if you will be participating. Entry Deadline is May 15, 2018** BYRON THOMS HIGH POINT AWARD To be eligible for the Byron Thoms High Point Award: A junior member must exhibit cattle at the National Junior Santa Gertrudis Show. This means either Purebred Females or Star Five Females. The highest placing female (of all cattle shown) will be counted toward the Byron Thoms. The following contests will be counted toward the Byron Thoms with ONLY the TOP FIVE scores to be tabulated toward the high point award: 1. Heifer Show (Purebred or Star Five) 4. Public Speaking 2. Livestock Judging 5. Cattleman s Contest 3. Sales Talk 6. Showmanship You must compete in one aspect of the female show either the Purebred Female show or the Star Five Female show, but you do not have to compete in all the leadership contests. There will be high point winners named for each age division. See Rule A for divisions. In the event of a tie, it will be broken based on the heifer show, if there remains a tie then both individuals will be recognized. 1 POINT WILL BE TABULATED FOR PARTICIPATION Point will be tabulated in each event as follows: Placing Points

21 Brain Bowl Contest Please read over all rules and be acquainted with the contest. AN AFFILIATE WILL ENTER ONE TEAM PER DIVISION (see section 1d for exceptions to entry rules). Entry fee is $10.00/team per division paid by Affiliate. An affiliate youth advisor can contact S.G.B.I. for entry forms. All entries must be postmarked by May 15, Brain Bowl study questions are available to affiliate youth advisors. Additions, deletions, or corrections may be made periodically. All changes will be made no later than one month prior to the entry deadline. Any study questions received prior to this date may not be current. The most recent study questions will be identified by date of changes. Study questions (one set for each division) will be sent to affiliate youth advisors by request only. Affiliates will be responsible for making copies for each contestant. Call S.G.B.I. for study questions or additional inquires at (361) If an affiliate intends on having a team compete in any of the three divisions of Brain Bowl, an affiliate youth advisor must enter the team online, complete, and send the Brain Bowl Contest entry form to S.G.B.I., complete with team member names, on or before May 15, Team member substitutions will be made at the Brain Bowl meeting prior to the Brain Bowl Contest. Time and date for the Brain Bowl meeting will be announced at Junior Nationals. Please listen for this announcement (see 2 for Brain Bowl meeting information). The competition will consist of Junior, Intermediate, and Senior divisions. An affiliate will enter one (1), four (4) member team per division. See 2018 NJSGS Rules and Regulations, Rule A for division age breaks. If an affiliate is unable to fill a team with 4 members upon arrival at the Brain Bowl Meeting, they will have several options: a) An affiliate may enter a team with junior members from other affiliates so long as at least one team member is a member of the sponsoring affiliate at the time of entry and the other team members are National Junior Santa Gertrudis Association members. b) An affiliate may move a participant(s) from a younger age division up to an older age division in order to fill a team. At no time though will an older age division participant be allowed to participate on a younger division team. c) As a last resort, if a team member drops out for any reason, then the affiliate may still compete with a minimum of three (3) team members. If a three member team is used, then that team will have an empty chair and be at a disadvantage. In a one on one question sequence, the opposing team member opposite the empty chair will be asked the question directly. No one from the three-member team may answer that question for the empty chair position. If the four-member team member is unable to answer the question, then Rule 3 will apply. d) To allow the opportunity for all junior members to compete in the Brain Bowl competition, special consideration may be made, if necessary. When the entry (for each division) is submitted to S.G.B.I., contestant names listed on line 1, 2, 3, and 4 will make 20

22 Brain Bowl Contest continued: up a team. If an affiliate has more than four contestants (per division) these names will be entered on the additional lines provided. When all entries are received after the deadline, the contest chairperson will review the entries. The additional entries will be grouped together to form a team(s). In the event that there are not enough participants to complete a team(s), the affiliate youth advisors for the participating team(s) will decide if additional team members will be added or if the team will compete with the 3 team member requirement (see 1c). Payment method will be at the discretion of the participating team(s). (Note: Please only enter names of junior members who are interested in participating in the Brain Bowl Contest. Do not enter a name just to fill a spot. This will allow the committee to assemble a team(s) for all junior members who are interested in participating) 2. There will be a Brain Bowl meeting held prior to the Contest each year. Drawing for bracket assignments for each division, distribution of blank contestant team and name cards, and general guidelines will be discussed at this meeting. Affiliate youth advisors or their representative must attend this meeting. Absence of an affiliate representative will result in drawing for bracket placement by a committee member. It will be the responsibility of the affiliate youth advisor or their representative to write team name and team member names on the cards. Team members will be responsible for placing their individual name card in their holder and the affiliate youth advisor will place the team name in the holder at the Brain Bowl contest. 3. Teams A and B are competing the first question will be directed to contestant 1 on A team and 1 on B team. 1A and 1B will have ten (10) seconds to buzz and ten (10) seconds to answer the question. If the question is answered correctly, the team will score one (1) point. If the question is answered incorrectly, the opposing team will have ten (10) seconds to discuss the question and give an answer. If after discussion the opposing team answers the question correctly, the team will score one (1) point. If the team answers the question incorrectly, the question dies. 4. The second question will be a team question directed to any contestant on either team. Contestants will have ten (10) seconds to buzz and ten (10) seconds to answer. If the question is answered correctly, the team will score one (1) point. If the question is answered incorrectly, the opposing team will have ten (10) seconds to discuss the question and give an answer. If after discussion the opposing team answers the question correctly, the team will score one (1) point. If the team answers the question incorrectly, the question dies. 5. The third (3rd) question will be directed to contestants 2A and 2B with the rules for #2 and #3 above. The same sequence will be followed throughout the contest. 6. If an answer is heard from the audience, the question will be dropped. 7. If two lights come on at the same time the question will be dropped. 8. The moderator will stop reading the question when a light appears. The contestants must give an answer within ten (10) seconds. If the answer is incorrect, the question will be repeated in its entirety for the opposing team. 9. There will be no true/false questions asked. 21

23 10. Each contest is ten (10) minutes long. Time will pause for answers referred for review by the moderator. 11. At the end of each round, one (1) bonus point will be given to any team whose members all answered at least one question correctly. 12. In the event of a tie, five minutes will be added to the clock. 13. If there are only two teams in one division, there will be a double-elimination tournament to win. 14. 24 23 QUEEN & PRINCESS Contest The following rules and responsibilities approved by the National Junior Santa Gertrudis Association, the NJSGA Board of Directors and the SGBI Youth Activities Committee will be in effect during the 2018 NJSGS. Each Junior Affiliate may enter ONE contestant in the Queen and Princess contests. Affiliate Representative can download entry form from SGBI website Junior page. All entries must be made by May 15, Rules and Responsibilities of the National Santa Gertrudis Queen and Princess Rules: 1. Contestant must be a member of the National Junior Santa Gertrudis Association 2. Contestant must be sponsored by a Junior Affiliate in the contest. 3. Contestant must be 16 years of age or older at the time of the contest to run in the Queen contest. Princess contestants must be 8-15 years of age at the time of the contest. 4. Queen and Princess contestants will be introduced at the opening general session of the NJSGS and will be allowed to campaign until the NJSGA business meeting on Wednesday, June 27,2018. All Queen and Princess contestants MUST give a two (2) minute prepared speech during the Welcome Dinner of the NJSGS, Sunday, June 24, Contestants will be introduced again at the General Membership meeting on Wednesday, June 27, 2018, and asked to give another two (2) minute prepared speech. Responsibilities: 1. The National Queen and Princess will serve a one-year term. 2. The National Queen and Princess will present awards at as many shows and field days as possible. 3. The Queen and Princess must attend the National Junior Santa Gertrudis Show and the National Open Show. Financing to attend these events is the responsibility of the queen and princess. 4. The National Queen and Princess are encouraged to represent the NJSGA at various conventions and parades. 5. The National Queen and Princess will be available for informative talks related to breed promotion. 6. The National Queen and Princess will always be an ambassador for the Santa Gertrudis breed. 7. The National Queen and Princess are encouraged to submit a report every quarter to the official publication of SGBI. Election Process: Queen and Princess Candidates will participate in the Welcome Dinner of the NJSGS on Sunday, June 24, 2018 at 6:00 pm at which time they will be introduced to the general membership and give a two (2) minute prepared speech. Candidates will be interviewed and judged by a panel of approximately three judges during the Queen and Princess Interviews/Brunch on Monday, June 25, 2018 at 11:00-1:00pm, this is a ladies event. Contestants are encouraged to invite their mother, grandmother, or another important female friend. The judging panel will score each candidate separately. The judging of the Queen and Princess candidates and their scores will be based on the following format:

25 QUEEN AND PRINCESS (CONT.) 60% Knowledge of the Breed, Personality, and Poise 40% Junior Membership Vote. Queen and Princess Candidates will be able to campaign the whole week of the show. REMEMBER: No taping is allowed at the fairgrounds you must use easels or other items in your campaigning process. Be Creative. All campaign material must be taken down by Friday, June 29, Winners of the contest will be announced Friday, June 29, 2018 at the awards banquet. Additional information pertaining to this event will be sent to all contestants if name, address, address, and $10.00/contestant has been submitted by their affiliate representative. The Affiliate is responsible for submitting this information by May 15,2018. *** *AFFILIATE REPRESENTATIVE must submit an AFFILIATE ENTRY FORM (found on SGBI webpage) if affiliate will be participating. Entry Deadline is May 15, 2018** BETTER BEEF CONTEST The true purpose of any Santa Gertrudis is to produce offspring for the production of beef. With this in mind, the NJSGS conducts the Better Beef Contest to raise awareness of beef quality in our breed, identify individual animals with superior carcass attributes, and add data to our breed registry. Bulls born between March 1, 2017 and August 30,2017: the following data will be collected on bulls free of charge to participants: Weight, Carcass Data Ultrasound Information (Intramuscular Fat%, Rib Eye Area, Fat Thickness, and Rump Fat Thickness), Scrotal Circumference, Hip Height (Frame Score) and DNA Collection Heifers born between April 1, 2017 and August 30,2017: The following data will be collected on heifers free of charge to participants: Weight, Carcass Data Ultrasound Information (Intramuscular Fat %, Rib Eye Area, Fat Thickness and Rump Fat Thickness), and Hip Height (Frame Score). We will be processing participants by affiliate. When we receive entry information in May, we will release a schedule with estimated times for each affiliate. If you have a scheduling conflict, please don t hesitate to let us know. We will work with everyone to make sure that all exhibitors who wish to have cattle scanned can do so. Cattle that are not in the appropriate age range can be scanned at cost which is $15/head. DNA testing will be available at $50.00/head. Prizes to be awarded: Top Carcass Bull, Top Carcass Female, Top Carcass Star 5 Female, Highest IMF Bull, Highest IMF Female, Highest IMF Star 5 Female. Contest will take place on Sunday starting at 9:00 am. Exhibitors with eligible aged cattle are encouraged to participate, as not only will this provide important information on the carcass quality of your animal, but it will also aid our breed registry in acquiring valuable data. Please be advised that the scan does require oil to be put on the back of the animal while it is restrained in the chute. 24

26 HERDSMAN CONTEST Entry forms must be filled out for each affiliate participating in the Herdsman Contest. Affiliate Representative can enter online. All entries must be received by May 15, No entry fee. Affiliate, Individuals, 4-H and FFA groups wishing to participate in the Herdsman Contest MUST fill out the entry form. You still MUST have the required amount of cattle to enter the Herdsman contest. All individuals, 4-H, FFA Chapters and SGBI affiliates which enter a minimum of 4 animals (calves not included) will need to fill out the entry form. Those not completing the entry form will not be considered for the Herdsman Awards. The Herdsman contest will be judged on specific criteria. These criteria are listed below and points will be given respectively. At the end of the judging, points will be totaled and the highest participant/group(s) will be named as the winner. Cattle exhibits will be judged according to the printed schedule. There will be NO daily winners announced. The top three winners will be announced at the awards banquet on Friday, June 16, Participants will be judged on cleanliness of stalls, amount of time that the junior exhibitor(s) spend cleaning/taking care of the animals and stall/display area and neatness of area (display and stalls). Point System based on 100 points. This is a positive/negative point system. For example: if parents spent a lot of time working on stalls, then that individual, affiliate or group may have 10 points deducted. Cleanliness: 20 points Cleanliness of stalls (area where cattle are bedded manure picked up and stalls kept clean free of hay, feed, manure, etc.) 15 points Cleanliness of aisles (aisles kept clean, no trash in aisle, if concrete aisle then how aisle is kept swept up, etc.) 5 points Feed pans and water buckets put up and out of stalls. Work/Amount of Time that is put into Stalls: 25 points work by junior(s) on keeping stalls clean. 10 points Promptness (to stalls in morning with cattle and taking them out at designated time). 10 points Time spent by parents keeping stalls clean. 10 points Friendliness to spectators walking by. *AFFILIATE REPRESENTATIVE must submit an AFFILIATE ENTRY FORM (found on SGBI webpage) if affiliate will be participating. 27 PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST Contestants must be entered in the 2018 NJSGS as an exhibitor or non-exhibitor. Entry fee is $ Only one (1) entry per contestant. Photos MUST be delivered during check-in. Photograph entry MUST be taken by the junior member who has entered it. Entries MUST be 8x10 color photographs, mounted on a thin black or white foam board which is no larger than 10x12 inches - absolutely No wood or metal framing. Entries must include: Junior Name, Age, Division, Home Address, City, State, Zip and Phone Number on back of foam board. Photos cannot be altered or digitally enhanced in any way. Photos MUST contain Santa Gertrudis cattle or related activities. The purpose of the video contest is to encourage the enhancement of visual communication skills and to allow junior Santa Gertrudis members another chance to compete in the National Junior Santa Gertrudis Show (NJSGS). Entry fee is $ There will be a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd placing for the competition. 1. Entries should be informative and promotional. The junior s purpose is to create an entry that would be suitable for national television. 2. Video must contain Santa Gertrudis cattle. 3. Each year a topic for the video will be selected. This year s topic is: The Future of Santa Gertrudis Cattle 4. Entries must meet the following criteria: a) All entries should be 1-2 minutes in length. b) The junior member(s) will produce (film & edit) the video. 5. Videos must be saved in the following formats to be accepted: Quick Time, AVI, or MPEG.6. Videos must be submitted on a CD, USB memory stick, or a portable external hard drive. SGBI reserves the right for promotional purposes. 7. Entries must be submitted at check-in on Sunday of the show. 8. The scoring will be based on a 50-point scale with 10 points given for each of the following categories: 26

28 Video (Cont.) Originality/creativity, message, attracts attention, appealing and organization. Judging will be by a three-member panel of judges. Each judge shall total their score and rank the entries in numerical order on the basis of their score. (Highest score first, lowest score last). 9. The rankings (not the score) of the three judges shall be added for each entry, and the final placings determined by the lowest composite rankings. Actual scores will be used only to break ties. In the event the participants are still tied, they shall be named co-winners and two awards will be given for that placing and none given for the following placing. **Please select Video Contest while entering ONLINE if you will be participating. Each presentation must have a minimum: Junior/Intermediate Division 6 slides Senior 12 slides Presentations must have at least two (2) pictures or clips are that support the idea of the presentation. Presentations must relate to the National Junior Santa Gertrudis Association, National Junior Santa Gertrudis Heifer Show or the Santa Gertrudis breed in general. Presentations will be judged on: 40% Slide content 35% Originality 15% Technical Merit 10% Overall Effect of Presentation Entries submitted must be on the following format: CD-ROM (PC Compatible) or jump drive/ flash drive If the PowerPoint Presentation fails to open during the judging process, the entry will be disqualified. Juniors must be the sole designer and the presentation needs to be computer generated. PowerPoint entries MUST be turned in during check-in on Monday of the show. As a director, an individual must be a paid junior member of SGBI and cannot be older than eighteen (18) years of age when the term begins. Directors run for a two-year term and cannot serve more than three (3); two-year terms. District Positions Available: District 1 2 positions District 2 1 position District 4 1 position District 5 1 position **District positions candidate(s) running for a District position must have their permanent address on file with SGBI as being in that district.
