3 PAGE 3 Rube Goldberg The Rube Goldberg projects this year were a hit! We had two teams display their machines this year, Northern Lights and Shoreview Library, successfully using many different steps to raise a flag and then wave it. Both teams will be showcasing their Rube Goldberg Machines at the State Fair. They will be showing off their projects between 3:00pm and 5:00pm on Sunday, September 3 rd in the 4-H building at the State fairgrounds. Turn the Tables; 4-H Youth Judges Thank you to our adult exhibitors and youth judges for participating in the 4-H Turn the Tables! This was our third year having an event where adults go through the judging process and have youth judges provide feedback.

4 PAGE 4 Ramsey County Arts-In Thank you to all who helped organize and perform the 2017 Ramsey County Arts-In Lights, Camera, Action! Participants spent four days in June rehearsing the show, choreographing the dances, painting the set and putting together costumes. The production performed every day at the Ramsey County Fair, accompanied by a live band. We would also like to thank everyone who participated in the Ramsey County Arts-In Chipotle Fundraiser. Because of your support, we raised $250 for Arts-In!

5 PAGE 5 Fashion Revue & Workshop This year s Fashion Revue focused on reusable bags and their benefits on the environment! We talked about the way that reusable bags can be useful and everyone got to create their own unique bag out of fabric scraps and other eco-friendly materials! After the workshop, our participants used the stage to show off their unique styles in the 2017 Fashion Revue! Thank you to all who participated. We hope to see you next year!

6 PAGE 6 Urban 4-H Rabbit Show This year we were happy to welcome Hennepin and Ramsey County rabbits to our fair! The show was hopping with 4-H ers and bunnies as an audience gathered to watch and learn. We want to thank all of our exhibitors and their rabbits for bringing bunny fun to our fair! We would also like to thank the Fair board and the volunteers that made this show happen! Here are a few pictures of the successful day:

7 PAGE 7 State Fair Information 4-H at the Minnesota State Fair 4-H at the Minnesota State Fair is not just a fun annual event. Every summer, thousands of 4-H youth participate in the state fair to showcase the knowledge and skills they've gained throughout the year, and to continue their learning experiences. 4-H youth spend months working on projects designed to equip them with essential life skills such as problem solving, decision-making, project management, communications and public speaking. 4-H'ers then share their accomplishments and educate the public about their subject at their local county fair. Those who demonstrate the highest achievements are then selected to participate in 4-H at the Minnesota State Fair! At both county and state fairs, 4-H'ers meet one-on-one with experts to have their projects evaluated, discuss what they have learned, and identify future learning opportunities. 4-H at the Minnesota State Fair not only makes great memories, it helps 4-H youth grow into successful adults State Fair Participants Congratulations to everyone going to the State Fair this year! 8 PAGE 8 4-H State Fair Participant Resources For general information, daily schedules, Minnesota State Fair premium book, and policies, visit Minnesota 4-H is again hosting Chef for a Day Cook-Off! The Chef for a Day Cook-Off will be held during all state fair encampments, and open to all 4-H state fair exhibitors. Each county will provide a team of 3-5 exhibitors for a two hour program during livestock encampment and every general encampment. The first hour will include an educational activity, and the second hour will be the Chef for a Day Cook-Off! All equipment will be supplied as well as all of the meat, and some possible ingredients. Teams may bring additional ingredients but note that no refrigeration is supplied. There will be no morning assignments -- but there will be prizes! Ramsey County has been assigned Saturday, September 2 nd from 6-8pm. Preparing for the State Fair Encampment Judging Times A full description of judging times can be found here: Please be sure to look under Encampment 4 (pages 30-36). State Fair Menu for Encampment 4

9 PAGE 9 Packing list If you haven t been to the State Fair encampment before, here are some tips on what to bring! Entry ticket 4-H button and any meal tickets (you need your button to access the 4-H building) Sleeping bag or other bedding and pillow (some people hang extra sheets over their bunks) Toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo and soap, towel, comb/brush) Comfortable (old) shoes and casual clothes including your 4-H t-shirts Light sweater or jacket, raincoat if you have one Limited amount of spending money Flip flops/sandals for the showers Hats and sunscreen Water bottle Any medication you need for the 4-H nurse Schedule of Judging and other fair activities (found on the participant resources page) Map of the State Fair Grounds Battery operated fans (it gets very hot in the dorms) Alarm clock (there are wake up calls available) Cell phone chargers (space is limited, especially at night) Label all items (bags, cell phone charger & sleeping items) A lightweight purse/small backpack that is easy to carry around Earbuds or Earplugs (you might want to listen to music to fall asleep, or just have silence) Phone Numbers for 4-H Building and Chaperones Staying at the Dorms Here are some rules and tips that are helpful to know while staying in the dorms: You must wear footwear at all times, so bring some flip flops or sandals to wear in the shower and around the dorm. Do not bring more than you need and Do not bring more than you can carry (you will be walking over to the 4-H building with your entire luggage a couple of times). All luggage should be remained locked do not bring valuables. Make sure that you stay in your assigned bunk every night you are there. There is a required check in time with your chaperone at 10:30pm on all nights you stay. You will also have check-in times during the first 15 minutes of each meal time and at 9pm when the 4- H building closes. After the 4-H building closes you will need your 4-H button to enter. Please be on time for your judging orientation. They will tell you important information about where and when you will be judged, as some of the larger project areas have multiple judging times. Kitchen Patrol KP Duty for Ramsey County is Sunday, September 3 rd at 4:15pm. We need 5 Ramsey participants for this. It is a lot of fun, and we encourage you to volunteer to help out! There will be a Ramsey State Fair orientation for those staying on the State Fairgrounds at 4:00pm on Saturday September 2 nd with chaperones Christy O Shea Novak and Edward Burke. This will take place on the second floor of the 4-H building near the entrance to the cafeteria line. Please make it on time to this meeting! We will be able to answer questions, get to know each other, and go over a few rules.

10 PAGE 10 State Fair drop-off and pick-up times For those going to State Fair, please pay close attention to drop-off and pick-up guidelines. Drop-off on Saturday, September 2nd Meeting at the 4-H Building - Parents should bring their youth to meet the chaperones, who will be holding Ramsey County 4-H signs, in front of the 4-H Building between 3:00 & 3:45pm. Exhibitors will use their gate ticket for entry and should bring their 4-H button, a 4-H t-shirt, and any additional supplies they need for judging! Chaperones will lead you two 2 nd floor for the orientation. Not Meeting at the 4-H Building - If parents are not entering the Fairgrounds, you must notify chaperones Edward Burke or Christy O Shea Novak by 12PM on September 2 nd (call or text Christy at or Edward at ) so we meet you at 2:30PM on Saturday, September 2 nd, at Gate 10, the "Loop Gate," on Como Avenue. Pick-Up on Monday, September 4th by 1 pm Meeting at the 4-H Building - Families should plan to pick up and sign out their child(ren) from the chaperone no later than 1pm on Monday, September 4th. If you will be at the Fair spending the day together, please sign out your youth when you arrive. Not Meeting at the 4-H Building - If you do not wish to enter the Fairgrounds yourself, you must notify chaperones Christy O Shea or Edward Burke by 12PM on September 2 nd so that we may bring your youth to meet you at 1:00pm, Monday, September 4th, at Gate 10, the "Loop Gate," on Como Avenue. We have a few families that have youth not staying for the entire encampment and not entering the fairgrounds to pick-up their child. If you are one of these families, please contact Alneida Madrigal at malneida@umn.edu. *** All youth leaving Fair early need to meet with either Ed or Christy to check-out! ***
