1 Scottish Highland Games Association - Newsletter Message from the President My first six months as president have been very interesting, with many inquiries from home and abroad. Work on safety is moving on. Discussions with various governing bodies. I look forward to meeting up with Games officials, athletes, and judges during the year. The ongoing drugs programme for season 2014 is in place. This is a very prolific year of sporting tradition and culture with the Homecoming, Commonwealth Games and the Ryder Cup. It is hard to believe that 2014 season is only weeks away so whether you are a dancer, track or heavy athlete, tug of war team, pipe band or solo piper enjoy the games experience and showcase our proud tradition and culture. 3 Dylan Ali New Year Sprint Winner - Profile FROM HIGHLAND TO COMMONWEALTH writes Shane Fenton. As we all look forward to start of the new Highland Games season a small group of competitors who once graced the green grass fields of the SHGA circuit as youngsters will have their sights firmly focused on an entirely different type of Games later in the year. Training Trainers Comment To win some scratch championships, and try and win the NY Sprint again. 6 Sessions per week preseason, repetitions and fartlek sessions During season drops to Monday, Wednesday and Thursday and light session on Friday Dylan is a dedicated athlete and never misses a session Chris O'Hare, Gemma Nicol and Laura Muir have already been selected for the Commonwealth Games at Hampden Park. It is a dream come true for the trio who started competing on the Games circuit as 10 year olds and to this day continue to make fleeting appearances when schedules allow. Chris who is based in Oklahoma recently signed a contract with Adidas and is now a full time professional athlete, he has been pre-selected for the 1500 metres following appearances in the World final in Moscow last year and earlier this year represented GB at the World Indoors in Poland. Laura who is also selected for the Women's 1500 metres has had an amazing year; the 20 year old from Milnathort broke both the Scottish 800 metres and 1500 metres indoor records as well as claiming the British indoor 800 metres title before representing GB at the aforementioned World Indoor Championships. Gemma Nicol is no stranger to Commonwealth Games having been at two already, she became at the age of 15 the youngest competitor to represent Scotland in athletics at Commonwealth Games at Manchester in Gemma is part of the Scottish 4 x 400 metres squad which already has the qualifying standard for Glasgow. Gemma as most of you will know has reached the final of the prestigious New Year Sprint on six occasions. Another athlete who has already been selected is Borderer Guy Learmonth the 800 metre man is better known for his early winning days on the Border Games circuit. Ross Matheson Lasswade AC is another games runner who is on the fringes of meeting the CG standard in the 1500 metres, currently on a scholarship in the US, Ross recently ran a 3 minutes 43.27s, just outside the 3:42.00 standard. Hopefully Ross can achieve the standard before the selection date. If Laura Muir has come on in leaps and bounds on two feet well the same can certainly be said about Katie Archibald on two wheels, her rise to the top has been phenomenal, from winning at Alva Games a couple of years ago, the former swimmer and daughter of past Highland Games athlete Ian Archibald, Katie is now a member of the ultra-successful GB pursuit team whom won the World championship in Mexico earlier in the year. Both Evan Oliphant and Eileen Roe are games regulars who have already sampled Commonwealth Games action, Evan in Melbourne and Delhi and Eileen at the latter, both will be harboring ambitions of being selected for Glasgow. I'm sure I speak for all in wishing all our Commonwealth Games hopes with a Highland Games connection all the best for Glasgow 2014.

4 RULES UPDATE During the close season a number of rules have been updated, these are primarily related to the heavyweight events and these can be found on the website. DRUG TESTING REPORT AND PROGRAMME Last season, we did 10 drug tests at the following venues, there were no positive results, tests were carried out at Strathmore 1 Heavy, 1 Cyclist, Ceres 1 Heavyweight, 1 Runner, Bridge of Allan 1 Heavyweight, 1 Runner, Crieff 2 Heavyweights, New Year 2 Runners. The schedule for 2014 has already been set and we will be carrying out at least twelve tests. UKAD request that certain facilities are made available for their reps to carry out their testing, i.e. if there is access to a permanent pavilion on site with changing rooms and a toilet within, that is fine. If there is no such building at hand we suggest that a tent, big enough for 2 tables 5 chairs, 5 to 6 people, with a portaloo, preferably one for disabled, placed outside. A Notice should be attached to the door saying for the use of UKAD reps only Ian Gurr (SHGA Drug Liaison Officer) 2014 SHGA DINNER - Presentation Dance The annual presentation Dinner Dance will take place on Saturday 1st November at the Gilvenbank Hotel Glenrothes. This is a joint venture between the S.H.G.A. and the Fife Highland Games Association. Guest speaker this year will be Finlay Calder TEST YOUR HIGHLAND KNOWLEDGE with Shane Fenton's PRE-SEASON QUIZ. 5 THE SCOTTISH HIGHLAND ASSOCIATION COMPETITOR REGISTRATION All competitors wishing to take part in ANY SHGA-registered events (including hill races, running, cycling, light field and heavyweight events) at SHGA Member Games MUST be registered with the SHGA PRIOR to competing. Only registered competitors will be permitted to take part in official events, be awarded points towards the SHGA leagues and be entitled to collect prize money, trophies or medals being presented by the SHGA. Unregistered athletes are not entitled to any cover under the SHGA s Personal Injury Insurance Scheme (which covers all athletes up to 75yrs old). Membership of amateur clubs should be declared on the application form and members must wear club vests. Annual Registration Fees for 2014 Season (1 st January th April 2015) Full Rate Adults: per person ( subject to payment being received by 30 April 2014). Concessionary Rate: Seniors: A reduced annual fee of applies to all competitors aged 65 and over. Youths: A reduced annual fee of applies to track and field competitors aged under 16, or cyclists aged under 17. Photocopy birth certificate required for new Youth registrations (not required for renewals). Tug-o-War Teams: per team without insurance cover to obtain cover please register as individuals, on the terms noted above. Day Registration: Athletes who only wish to compete at ONE event in the year may pay a single use fee instead of full registration at the following rates: Adult 3, Youth 1, (Tug o War 10/team). Insurance is not included and will not count towards leagues. Any further participation will require full registration at the standard rates. Cheques or Postal Orders should be payable to Scottish Highland Games Association Year Books - Copies are available with your registration at 4 each (includes p&p). Insurance Athletes are encouraged to arrange their own Public Liability Insurance cover; note that this is not provided by SHGA. I, the Parent / Guardian undersigned, declare that I am the person having parental responsibility of the Athlete undersigned (the Athlete ) and that I have full capacity to give consent to the taking of a blood or urine Sample as required by the anti-doping rules of the Scottish Highland Games Association ( the Rules ).
