1 Scottish Highland Games Association - Newsletter The 2016 games season weather wise was its usual, kind to some member games and unkind to others. But what was delivered on the games field was spectacular started off on January 1st with the first ever female winner of the historic New Year sprint with 18 year old Jazmine Tomlinson taking the 4000 prize and crystal trophy. When the season started in earnest in mid-may we were to witness a season which can only be described as outstanding, athletics of the highest standard with the performances by Allan Hamilton in the jumps of a top class level. In the heavies we saw a display from Scott Rider possibly up there with the best, this seemed to propel fellow heavies into outstanding performances in all disciplines, tug of war was as usual strongly contested. The member games should be proud of the venues they provide and they were rewarded with increased crowds. I should also record the very colourful scene that highland dancing, solo piping, and pipe bands bring to the games and not forgetting our supportive trader s village. On behalf of the SHGA I would like to congratulate our Olympic and Paralympic athletes who did us so well in Rio. As president I would ask you to encourage fellow athletes from your schools and clubs in all disciplines to join you into a wonderful sporting culture of the Highland games. I wish you all the best for the remainder of President Charlie Murray. 4 The 2016 season, saw the creation of the Highland Area Highland Games Association, a.k.a HAHGA. A competitive Heavies League was formed, as was an innovative Cumulative Weight Over the Bar competition, where athletes carry over their individual heights thrown, to the next Games in the north. The association s webpage is Throughout the season, over 30 different Heavies participated at the various north Games and the eventual HAHGA competition winners, were not settled until the final SHGA Games of the season, at Invercharron. The HAHGA League was won by Jason Young (Tain), centre. John MacLeod (Lochinver), right was 2 nd and Jamie Gunn (Halkirk), left, was 3 rd. John won the Weight Over the Bar competition. It is hoped that sponsorship can be found, to continue both Heavy competitions in 2017 and to start track and field leagues. No Games in the north were cancelled due to the summer s inclement weather, but the Invergordon Games did not take place, due to other local difficulties. They were replaced on the circuit with SHGA newcomers, the Glenurquhart Games, which took place on the same day that Invergordon were historically held. The general soft ground conditions were not favourable for jumping, but several ground records were broken. No particular athlete dominated in the various foot races, which were all scratch races. Charles Fletcher won most of the Senior cycle races and Kyle Cartmell won most of the Junior cycling races. Halkirk hosted the 2016 World Invitational Heavy Events Championships, where 10 of the world s best heavies competed throughout the day. The overall Championship was rightly won by the current SHGA World Champion and the 2016 SHGA Heavyweight Sportsman of the year, Scott Rider Jazmine Tomlinson Outstanding Female Athlete of the Year
