1 Race #1 Sunday July 3rd Studley Park 5km & 10.8km OFFICIAL EVENT PROGRAM Welcome to the 2011 Salomon Trail Running Series If you find Bitumen Boring and are far more interested in running through fern-fringed valleys, weaving through towering stands of gums or skipping along a flowing trail beside a river with the air crisp in your lungs and cushioned pad of earth beneath your feet then YOU VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE because this is what the Salomon Trail Running Series is all about. The Salomon Trail Running Series is designed to take everyday runners to non everyday locations and provide you with a scenic, accessible, not overly technical run through a beautiful part of the world and by entering Race #1 on Sunday July 3rd at Studley Park, you re going to have a running experience to talk about. Despite its inner urban location, the trails at Studley Park will see you immersed in nature as you follow these remarkably scenic courses that follow the twists and turns of the mighty Yarra, pass over scenic foot bridges, through historic eucalypt bushland and pockets of parkland you never knew existed. If you re new to trail running then welcome, you couldn t get a better introduction to the pleasures of trail running whilst remaining within 20 minutes of the city centre. As well as thanking you for supporting this inaugural trail running series, we also wish to thank Salomon - naming rights sponsors of the Salomon Trail Running Series for the encouragement they give us all to get out and run trails and enjoy life. The following event program gives you the race information you need to know to make the most of your training. Please read it carefully and if you have any questions contact us at any time and we d be happy to help. Take care and we ll see you at the start of the trail running goodness to come. The Rapid Ascent team

4 Competitor identification Number plates and timing tags All competitors are required to wear their race number plate whilst running in the race. Your number plate will have a small timing tag stuck to the back of it so we can record your start and finish time. This tag looks just like a strip of foam, so please do not remove it from your number plate otherwise you will not get an official result. All runners must safety pin your unique number plate to the front of the shirt you wear during the run so it is easily visible from the front when you are running. Gold number plates denote runners who have entered the entire Salomon Trail Running Series of 3 events. Red number plates denote runners doing race #1 only. If you have a Gold number plate and are doing all races in the series please KEEP YOUR NUMBER PLATE and timing tag and use it for the race #2 and #3 as well. We will not be re-issuing number plates to series runners. If you forget to bring your gold number plate to the next race, there will be a fee for issuing another plate and timing chip. Number plate collection Competitors who entered Race #1 (or the series) before 1:00pm Thursday June 23rd will receive their event number plate in the post before the event. If you have not received it in the post by Thursday June 30th then please call the Rapid Ascent office on (03) Competitors who enter Race #1 (or the series) after 1:00pm Thursday June 23rd must collect their event number plate from one of the following locations and times: o On Thursday June 30th, between 12:00pm and 3:00pm from The Athletes Foot Store in the VM Romano Building, 115 Elizabeth St, Melbourne (tel: ) o On Friday July 1st, between 12:00pm and 3:00pm - from The Athletes Foot Store at Shop 1, Manchester Unity Building, 220 Collins Street, Melbourne (tel: ) o On race morning, Sunday July 3rd between 7:00am and 8:15am (sharp) from the race registration marquee at the Studley Park Boathouse NOTE: We strongly encourage all runners who enter after 1:00pm Thursday June 23rd to collect your number plate from the participating Athletes Foot stores rather than waiting until race morning. Collecting it before hand would allow you to arrive at the race venue in your own time (ie. sleep in!) and avoid any queue of late entrants / registrants on the day. It also means you d get a chance to check out an Athlete s Foot store and buy any running supplies you need! Once you have received your number plate (either via post or collection) then you do not need to report in or register at the event venue on race morning, just warm up and then arrive at the start line ready to race! Entries will be accepted on the day if you have any friends who have not entered yet. Competitor race packs All entrants will receive a Salomon branded tote bag, sponsor information and a range of goodies as soon as you cross the finish line after your race. Series entrant FREE race t-shirts All runners who have entered all 3 races in the 2011 Salomon Trail Running Series receive a free event t-shirt as part of your entry fee. Please come and collect your series t-shirt by presenting your golden number plate at the race registration marquee at the finish line after you have completed your race. If you have purchased an event t-shirt through the website please also come and collect your shirt from the race registration marquee after the race. Finally, if you have not purchased a shirt but would like to (because you think they look pretty cool!) then we ll be selling them from the race registration marquee for $25 after the race as well.
5 The course(s) Race distances: Long course: 10.8km, includes 185m elevation gain / loss. Short Course: 5km, includes 61m elevation gain / loss. (These distances have been measured via a combination of GPS and bike computer. We welcome anyone carrying a GPS watch to send us their gps files after the race so we can be more accurate next time) The Start: Start line location: On Yarra Bend Road opposite Corben Oval (over the swing bridge on the Northern side of the river 100m away from the Event Centre and Finish) Start times: The long course will have two different wave starts and the short course will have just one wave start. The start times for each wave are: 9:00am FAST PACE runners start 9:10am LEISURELY PACE runners start 9:25am Short course (5km) race starts Starting procedure: Long course: In order to reduce any congestion and provide maximum trail running enjoyment for long course entrants we will be starting the race in 2 waves a FAST RUNNER wave and a LEISURELY RUNNER wave. We require long course runners to voluntarily place yourself in the start wave that is an accurate reflection of your ability based on the following guidelines. FAST RUNNER WAVE should be for runners who can complete a 10km road race in less than 55minutes LEISURELY RUNNER WAVE should be for runners who can complete a 10km road race in more than 55minutes Please be honest about your ability as it will maximise your s and everyone else s enjoyment if you place yourself accurately. We ask that those in the FAST RUNNER wave line up in the start chute first, ready to commence at 9:00am SHARP. We then ask that all those in the LEISURELY RUNNERS wave gather in the start chute after all the fast runners have started ready for your start at 9:10am. Short Course: All short course runners will start together with the one mass start (as there are less of you) at 9:25am. Please wait until all long course runners have departed the start chute before lining up for your start Additional points about the start: Irrespective of which start you are in we encourage all runners to be realistic about your speed and place yourself in the line up for the start accordingly with fast runners at the front of the chute and slower runners at the back of the chute We will have a timing mat at the actual start line so your race time will be recorded from when you actually cross the start line, not (necessarily) when the gun goes Cut off times: 10.8km course closes at 11:00am. 5km course closes at 10:30am
6 Water points 5km course: There will be no water points on the 5km course. 10.8km course: There will one water point at the 4.5km point where the course joins Yarra Boulevard. There will be water and other food and drinks available at the finish line. Course marking Trail running events are quite different to road running events in that they do require you to look and think a bit about where you are going because, not only will you pass through some lovely wilderness, but you need to KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR COURSE MARKINGS. Trail running courses are not lined with fences or red and white flagging tape and will not have marshals every 10m ready to hand you a drink and direct you where to go every step of the way - you need to keep an eye out for and follow the course markings to make your way around. Having said that, if you have your head up and are looking where you are going the course will be easy to follow and will be marked as follows: The Long Course will be marked with: red and/or orange arrows (pegged into the ground and fixed to trees or bushes) fluoro pink coloured plastic surveyor s tape (tied to trees or bushes) and with white flour arrows marked on the ground The Short Course will be marked with: blue arrows (pegged into the ground and fixed to trees or bushes) fluoro yellow coloured plastic surveyor s tape (tied to trees or bushes) and with white flour arrows marked on the ground All track intersections will be clearly marked and care should be taken to follow the arrows. Surveyor s tape will be placed immediately following a track junction to confirm you are on the correct track. Track markings on the longer, straighter sections, where there are no other options or intersections, will be far more spread out so take your time at the intersections to make sure you are on the right track. Unless otherwise marked or directed, competitors should follow the most major track at all intersections. If there is no arrow at a minor track junction then continue along the major track. 7 Course description Part of the attraction of trail running is the adventure that it leads you on, the wilderness it leads you through and enjoyment you have along the way. Now we don t want to ruin that by giving you a blow by blow description of the course so provide the following brief descriptions only. Long course: All runners start out on Yarra Bend Road for the first 800m before being directed onto the gravel footpath on the left hand side of the road. Soon after, runners cross over the Eastern Freeway Bridge and then turn right and descend down to the Yarra River to complete an 800m loop through the bush before returning on a two way section of track under the freeway (all runners keep right). From here, the course continues beside the Yarra before heading up some steps to cross the river at the Pipe Bridge at the Fairfield Park Boathouse at the (approx) 3.8km mark. After a short climb, runners come to the water station on the Yarra Boulevard at the (approx) 4.5km point before descending down some steps to the river. From here, through to the finish, the narrow trail follows the river with some superb trail running through beautiful bushland, broken only by a short 700m stretch on the sealed footpath beside the Yarra Boulevard. The long course and short course trails come together 700m from the finish (please respect other runners on this final section) and then continues through to the finish line on the grassland beside the Studley Park Boathouse. Short course: All runners start on Yarra Bend Road for the first 800m before being directed onto the gravel footpath on the left hand side of the road. Soon after, runners are directed to turn left and follow a flat double track beside the ovals before it narrows into a fun section of trail through the trees at the 1.8km point. After exiting the trees, runners turn left and follow a scenic trail beside the river back past the start area and then over the Swing Bridge to then turn left and complete a 1.2km loop leading to the finish beside the Studley Park Boathouse. Note: the long course and short course trails come together 700m from the finish so please respect other runners on this final section.
