7 THE COURSES START LOCATION All races start and finish in the event expo at Tom s Block. This is immediately adjacent The Tan and diagonally opposite the National Gallery of Victoria. START TIMES 12km: 8:00am 7km: 8:20am 2km Kids: 10:00am Please arrive no later than 20mins prior to your start time. START PROCEDURE All distances will start racing with a single wave start (at the designated course start time above). SELF SEEDING Please place yourself in the start chute according to your honest running ability, with fast runners near the front, recreational runners in the middle and those who are here to enjoy yourself towards the back. Please be honest about your ability as it will maximise your and everyone else s enjoyment of the course Your time will be recorded when you cross the timing mat at the start line. Those runners waiting for your start are asked to wait to the side of the start chute so you are out of the way of runners getting under way MP3 PLAYERS Rapid Ascent strongly recommends that runners do NOT wear head phones and listen to music during the race because you become less aware of your surroundings and the runners around you. If you re plugged into your head phones it becomes a safety hazard as it is harder for someone who wants to pass to let you know they are there, or for a race marshal to give you directions, or to be aware of any medical emergencies taking place. 12KM COURSE DESCRIPTION The 12km long course race starts with half a lap of The Tan (anti-clockwise) before crossing the Yarra River for a circuit of AAMI Park and your first serious flight of stairs. Then it s along the Yarra, over the William Barak Bridge and into Melbourne Park where you ll run between the outside courts and circumnavigate the Rod Laver Arena. Keep plenty of power in your legs for the steep stairs around Hisense Arena and then it s over to the MCG and a trot up the hill past the Jolimont Station through the beautiful avenue of trees of Yarra Park. Keep your ears alert for the sound of the Federation Bells in Birrarung Marr and the rattle of trams and trails as you run past Federation Square and back over the Yarra on the picturesque Princess Street Bridge. Continue through Alexandra Gardens and prepare for the final uphill sprint past the Sidney Myer Music Bowl, and then it s home on the trails beside Government House and into the finish at Tom s Block. Well done! 12km Course Marking: Red and/or orange arrows (pegged into the ground and fixed to trees, buildings or other infrastructure) Strips of fluoro pink coloured plastic surveyor s tape (tied to trees or structures) LOOK OUT FOR CLEARLY MARKED COURSE SPLIT SIGNS 12km Water Points: 1. 4km pt On Yarra River just past Swan Street Bridge km pt - Adjacent Hisense Arena 3. 8km pt Near Jolimont Station 4. At the finish line 7KM COURSE DESCRIPTION The 7km short course race starts with half a lap of The Tan (anti-clockwise) before crossing the Yarra and your first flight of stairs at AAMI Park. You will stay elevated as you cross Swan Street on the pedestrian fly-over bridges that link to Melbourne Park. Scoop up a drink at the 3km water point at Hisense Area and continue around the outside tennis courts and marvel at a pocket of Melbourne that few people ever see. Complete your lap of Rod Laver Arena and you re soon running back past AAMI Park (and more stairs yippee!!) and then its along beside the Yarra River for a little over a kilometer before the final hill climb up past the Sidney Myer Music Bowl, and then it s home on the trails beside Government House and into the finish at Tom s Block. Well done!

At the finish line 2KM KIDS COURSE DESCRIPTION The kids run is designed as an easy and achievable way for kids to join the CITYTRAIL action and develop a taste for exercise. This is a participation event - not a race, so there will be no timing, no results and no winners (other than everyone who completes this fun little event). The kids run will start and finish at Tom s Block and will begin running on the scenic footpaths beside Government House and then pound down the steep hill to The Tan track beside the river. Save your energy kids because you re soon running (or walking!?) back uphill before heading around the scenic trails in the gardens and back towards the finish at Tom s block.. Well done kids! 2km Kids Course Markings: Red and/or orange arrows (pegged into the ground and fixed to trees, buildings or other infrastructure) Strips of fluoro pink coloured plastic surveyor s tape (tied to trees or structures) 2km Kids Water Points: 1.
