1 RUNNING SERIES 2014 Race #4 > Sunday 14th September Anglesea - Surf Coast EVENT PROGRAM Welcome to Race 4 of the Salomon Trail Running Series at Anglesea on the Surf Coast, on Sunday 14th September. Ah the smell of salt air the feeling of sand between your toes and the sound of waves crashing onto the beach... Combine these features of the coast with extensive eucalypt forests interlaced with flowing single track and you have a trail running paradise. All this and more is waiting for you at Anglesea on the Surf Coast and Race 4 of the Salomon Trail Running Series. This is also the final race of the 2014 Salomon Trail Running Series and the end of all the off-road fun we ve had over winter. It is worth pausing to reflect on all the adventures we ve had over the last 3 months, from the flowing trails beside the Yarra at Race 1, the kangaroos and river crossings at Plenty Gorge at Race 2, the hills (and fog) at Olinda in the Dandenongs at Race 3 and now the beach at Anglesea. We have genuinely enjoyed every race and thank you for making the series such a terrific success. The final race at Anglesea is held in conjunction with the Surf Coast Century 100km ultra marathon that kicks off on Saturday morning at 6:00am. The unity of these two events means that over 2,000 trail runners will be gathered in Anglesea for the weekend, making it one of the biggest trail running events in Australia. One of the things that makes this weekend so great is that it brings together trail runners of all levels, from those running and walking 8km through to Australia s best ultra marathoners racing 100km you re all welcome and all here thanks to a shared love of the trails and being outdoors. Please read the following event program carefully as it outlines the plans for the weekend. And if you want our recommendation come down to the Surf Coast for the whole weekend to support the Surf Coast Century runners and enjoy the beach for a couple of days. See you on the sand! The Rapid Ascent team

7 Social Trails The Salomon Trail Running Series is all about getting people into some beautiful wilderness areas for a rewarding run in the bush. It is also about having a lot of fun and this year we ve ramped up the giveaways with a bunch of fun new initiatives to help tell the world that trails are terrific! Salomon Selfie! Take a selfie out training on the trails in the weeks leading up to each race (or before / during / after your run on race morning) and tag #SalomonSelfie and #SalomonTrailSeries on Instagram or Twitter. We ll share the best selfies and award a bunch of winners with some great gear during presentations. We ll also have our popular media backdrop back again with a range of catch phrases that you can hold up to add a little fun to your post race photos. Facebook Check In Check in on Facebook when you arrive at the event on race day to tell friends and family what you re up to and help build the trail running revolution. Trail Tales - tell us your stories We all love telling our tales from the trails with a post-event report so if you put pen to paper (or write a blog), record a race video or snap a few photos during the race then make sure you share them with us on the Rapid Ascent Facebook page by the Wednesday after each race. We ll reward the best writer with some great Salomon gear - so get writing! After race 3 Ami Smith wrote a great piece on just how much she enjoys trail running and getting out into the wilderness no matter how fast / slow you run and won a set of Salomon gear so start planning your piece and maybe you ll win some great gear this time?! Claim your race e-badge All runners who complete Race 4 can claim a FINISHER e-badge after the event so you can tell your friends you did it (and had a great time in the process). On Sunday after the race we ll you the link to download your badge (super easy to download) and we encourage you wear it on your sleeve by sharing it on social media! Nice one! 9 The Course(s) Race distances Long course: 22.7km 440m elevation gain / loss. Medium course: 14.6km, 293m elevation gain / loss approx. Short course: 7.8km, 163m elevation gain / loss approx The start Start line location: All runners start on the Anglesea Main Beach adjacent to the river mouth. Starting procedure single wave start for each race All distances will start racing with a single wave start at the time listed below. We will not be doing wave starts within each distance this year as there is plenty of space for runners to spread out before you get to the single track. Self seeding: Please place yourself in the start chute according to your honest running ability, with fast runners near the front, recreational runners in the middle and those who are here to enjoy yourself towards the back. Please be honest about your ability as it will maximise your and everyone else s enjoyment if you place yourself accurately Your time will be recorded when you cross the timing mat at the start, so it does not truly matter where you start Those runners waiting for your start are asked to wait to the side of the start chute so you are out of the way of runners getting under way. Start times: 8:30am 8:40am 9:00am LONG COURSE (22.7km) - all runners start MEDIUM COURSE (14.6km) - all runners start SHORT COURSE (7.8km) - all runners start Passing etiquette With a large number of runners sharing a narrow trail there are a few points of common etiquette when it comes to passing a runner on the trail that we d like all participants to be aware of. If you are a faster runner who wants to pass a slower runner on a narrow bit of track: let the slower runner know you are there and want to pass. Say something like, Can I go past when there s a chance... or even Track please then wait for a wider section of track don t just barge on through the slower runner can then say, OK, go past on the right or just up here it s a bit wider, go there. But it s good to acknowledge that you heard them and give direction for when they can go past it s also nice for the faster runner to say, thank you, keep going once you re past share the love if you are going to pass then make sure you are actually faster, don t pass if you are pushing 120% effort to get around them and then slow down afterwards slower runners - don t feel like you need to totally stop and bow down as a faster runner comes through, make space but keep trotting along as well. MP3 players and music on course We strongly recommend that runners do not wear head phones and listen to music during the race because you become less aware of your surroundings and the runners around you. If you re plugged into your head phones it is harder for someone who wants to pass to let you know they are there, for a race marshal to give you directions or other runners to have a chat. And you won t hear the birdlife and sounds of the bush so leave your tunes in the car and tune into where you are running. Water points On course water points Water points will have cups of water and Nuun available. Please put used cups in a bin. Short course (7.8km): There will not be a water point on the short course. Medium course (14.6km): There will one water point on the long course that will be located at the 8.8km point when you join Hurst Rd. Long course (22.7km): There will be two water points, located at the 11km point at the Ironbark basin car park and 17km point where you join Hurst Rd. Finish line water point There will be cups of water and Nuun available at the finish line courtesy of our hydation sponsor Nuun.

10 Course marking - Important!! Trail running events are quite different to road running events in that they require you to look and think a bit about where you are going because, not only will you pass through some lovely wilderness, but you need to KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR COURSE MARKINGS. Trail running courses are not lined with fences or red and white flagging tape and will not have marshals every 10m ready to direct you where to go every step of the way - you need to keep an eye out for and follow the course markings to make your way around. Having said that, if you have your head up and are looking where you are going the course will be easy to follow and will be marked as follows: The Long Course will be marked with: red and/or orange arrows (pegged into the ground and fixed to trees or bushes) fluoro pink coloured plastic surveyor s tape (tied to trees or bushes) The Medium Course will be marked with: green arrows (pegged into the ground and fixed to trees or bushes) green coloured plastic surveyor s tape (tied to trees or bushes) The Short Course will be marked with: blue arrows (pegged into the ground and fixed to trees or bushes) aqua blue coloured plastic surveyor s tape (tied to trees or bushes) The colours of these course markings match the colour of the number plate for runners in that particular course distance (except Series Entrants who have a GOLD number plate). All track intersections will be clearly marked and care should be taken to follow the arrows. Surveyor s tape will be placed immediately following a track junction to confirm you are on the correct track. Track markings on the longer, straighter sections, where there are no other options or intersections will be far more spread out so take your time at the intersections to make sure you are on the right track. Unless otherwise marked or directed, competitors should follow the most major track at all intersections. If there is no arrow at a minor track junction then continue along the major track. Course Description Part of the attraction of trail running is the adventure that it provides, the wilderness it leads you through and enjoyment you have along the way. We don t want to ruin that by giving you a blow by blow description of the course so provide the following brief descriptions only. Long Course km (course goes in an anti-clockwise on the provided map): We are very excited to provide a NEW long course option at the Anglesea race for 2014 and what a spectacular course it is too! The course is a 23km amalgamation of sections of the first 2 legs of the Surf Coast Century and provides an incredibly scenic and varied trail journey. All runners will start on the beach, complete a short out and back towards the Surf Life Saving Club and then continue along the beach, below the spectacular Anglesea Cliffs that tower 50m overhead for an incredible 7km stretch along the coast all the way to Point Addis all at low tide and on hard sand. This is the same stretch of cliffs that the Surf Coast Century passes below and is a real highlight of the event. From Point Addis runners continue up the Koori Walk Trail, descend down into Snake Gully and then climb back up hill on the nature walk to Ironbark Basin and the first water point at the 11km point. Crossing over Point Addis Road, runners continue into the network of single track in the Eumeralla area and enjoy kilometre after kilometre of terrific running on flowing single track. Follow until you hit the 2nd water point at the 17km point. From here there is a short blast along Hurst Rd and then it s along the popular Surf Coast Walking Track with its commanding views over Anglesea and the coast and then down to the beach and into the finish line on the Riverbank Park. Well done folks, you ve just completed the NEW 23km long course and the 2014 Salomon Trail Running Series.

12 Medium Course km All runners start on the sand at the Anglesea main beach facing west (towards the Surf Life Saving Club) for a short out and back sprint along the beach to get your juices flowing and spread out the field. Coming back past the start area runners leave the beach via a concrete boat ramp and follow a gravel double track through the heathland that soon turns to single track leading to the footy ground at the 3.4km mark. From here the course climbs up a rather rough double track above the footy ground before turning into more flowing single track that undulates its way through the bushland, before a gradual descent to the water point on Hurst Rd at the 8.8km mark. Turning to follow the gravel Hurst Rd for 1.2km runners then join the Surf Coast Walk track as it cuts through the Eumeralla Scout Camp before a long, spectacular descent down the walking track back to the beach and the finish line in the neighbouring parkland. YIPPEE - you ve just finished the 2014 Salomon Trail Running Series! Well done. Short Course - 7.8km All runners start on the sand at the Anglesea main beach facing west (towards the Surf Life Saving Club) for a short out and back sprint along the beach to get your juices flowing and spread out the field. Coming back past the start area runners leave the beach via a concrete boat ramp and follow a gravel double track through the heathland that soon turns to single track leading to the footy ground at the 3.4km mark. From here the course climbs up a rather rough double track above the footy ground before turning back into single track and crossing a gravel road - where short course runners turn right. From here it s a gradual descent on winding single track through the bush, past a few buildings in the Eumeralla Scout Camp before turning for home with a flowing descent at the 5km point. It s all downhill from here with a long, spectacular descent down the walking track back to the beach and the finish line in the neighbouring parkland.
