The Lobo trio recorded three of the 25 NCAA provisional qualifying marks in the first major collegiate meet of the 2009 season in the Duke City - the Cherry & Silver Invitational. The meet also saw two NCAA automatic marks surpassed and two facility records fall. After two remarkable seasons of action in downtown Albuquerque, the world-class facility at the Convention Center was put on the shelf in Host New Mexico, however, along with nationally ranked teams from BYU, Arizona, Stanford, Adams State, talented squads from California, Houston and UT-San Antonio, and a group of world class post-collegiate athletes served notice today that indoor track is back in Albuquerque. Solomon jump-started the Lobos with a stunning performance in the men s 400 meters. After redshirting all of the 2008 season, the Albuquerque La Cueva product picked up where he left off in 2007, smashing his own school record in a wire-to-wire victory in the collegiate 400 field. Solomon outlasted Arizona All-American Bobby McCoy and Adams State All-American Josh Streeter for the win, crossing the line in an NCAA provisional

3 MEET THREE NEW MEXICO HOSTS THE NEW MEXICO MULTIS & INVITATIONAL TEAM NOTES qualifying time of McCoy - who was fourth in the event at the 2008 NCAA Indoor Championships - was unable to counter Solomon s sizzling burst out of the starting blocks. Solomon s last 400 at the Convention Center came at the 2007 Mountain West Conference Championships, where he finished second to break his father Michael s UNM record with a time of Former USA Indoor 400 champion James Davis - who set a Convention Center record of in the invitational race - was the only athlete to clock a faster time than the UNM senior today. An hour and a half later, Emanuel secured his place as the fastest indoor middle distance man in New Mexico history. The Hastings, England product ran third for much of his 800-meter race before turning on the jets and surging past BYU s Kyle Perry - the 2008 MWC mile champion - and the Cougars all-mwc honoree Jacob Gustafsson over the final 100 meters. Emanuel crossed the line in an altitude adjusted and NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:50.30 to break Roger Moore s 1983 school record by 0.30 seconds. Emanuel broke a 24-year-old UNM record in the mile in his debut season last year. Young, meanwhile, put an exclamation point on the Lobos effort today, dominating the women s triple jump field with a provisional qualifying leap of 42 4 ½ (12.91m). The Albuquerque Highland product, who entered the day at 11th in the national preseason rankings, came within three inches of her own school record. She recorded the three longest marks of the day before sitting out the finals. Elsewhere for New Mexico, junior transfer Rory Fraser picked up a win in his first mile race as a Lobo. Fraser clocked a solid altitude adjusted time of 4:05.70, less than three seconds shy of the NCAA provisional qualifying standard. Senior teammate Mat Ashton was seventh in a career best altitude adjusted time of 4: Senior Ariel Burr made a triumphant return to indoor action after redshirting the 2008 season. Burr finished second in the 400 with a time of It was her first indoor 400 race since winning the MWC title in the event at the Convention Center in Fellow senior Domnick Meadows used a raucous crowd lining the triple jump runway to post a career-best mark of 49 3 ½ (15.02m) en route to a fifth place finish. An all-mwc honoree indoors last winter, Meadows redshirted the 2008 outdoor season. He was part of an elite triple jump field that saw three men surpass the NCAA provisional qualifying standard in the final event of the day. SOLOMON CLOCKS MWC S THIRD-FASTEST 400 Senior Jarrin Solomon was named Mountain West Conference Men s Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week the conference office announced on Jan.27. It s Solomon s first career indoor Athlete of the Week award and he became just the fourth member of the UNM men s team to be honored by the MWC during the winter season. Solomon jump-started the Lobos in Cherry & Silver Invitational with a stunning performance in the men s 400 meters. After redshirting all of 2008, the Albuquerque La Cueva product picked up where he left off in 2007, smashing his own school record in a wire-to-wire victory in the collegiate field. Solomon crossed the line in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of the fastest time in Mountain West Conference history run in the month of January and third-fastest overall on the conference record book. The previous five fastest 400-meter times in MWC history had all been run on or after Feb. 24. His time is currently third in the country on the early season descending order list. Solomon outlasted Arizona All-American Bobby McCoy in the first and fastest collegiate heat and also defeated Adams State All-American Josh Streeter, who was running in heat two. McCoy was fourth in the 400 at the 2008 NCAA Indoor Championships, while Streeter was third at the 2008 Division II Indoor Championships. Solomon s last 400 at the Convention Center came at the 2007 MWC Championships, where he finished second to break his father Michael s UNM record with a time of Former USA Indoor 400 champion James Davis - who set a Convention Center Albuquerque Convention Center- Driving Instructions 401 2nd St. NW Albuquerque, NM From South (Airport, Belen) 1. 4 MEET THREE NEW MEXICO HOSTS THE NEW MEXICO MULTIS & INVITATIONAL TEAM NOTES record of in the invitational race - was the only athlete to clock a faster time than Solomon on Saturday. LOBO ALL-AMERICAN PITCHES IN ON TRACK SET-UP Second-year UNM head coach Joe Franklin and his staff worked around the clock in late December and early January to put the track together in the 106,000-square foot Fran Hill Exhibit Hall at the Albuquerque Convention Center. Franklin received a big assist from former Lobo pole vaulter Robert Caldwell a two-time All-American who graduated last spring. Caldwell enlisted the help of workers at his company, Pro Fab, and TLC Plumbing to help with the assembly of the track. New Mexico opens the 2009 indoor season on Saturday, Jan. 17 with the Lobo Opener. It will be the first of four straight home meets: the Cherry and Silver Invitational (Jan. 24), New Mexico Multis and Invitational (Jan ), and the New Mexico Classic (Feb. 7). The Mountain West Conference Championships will return to Albuquerque in Setting it all up has been a labor of love, but our kids are so excited to have this facility back in Albuquerque, Franklin said. (Former UNM coaches) Matt and Mark Henry, and Scott Steffan did a great job of putting on some amazing meets in prior seasons and we re eager to pick up where they left off in You re going to see some very fast times on the track and big marks in the field events here this winter and our athletes are thrilled to be able to compete each week at home in front of their friends and family INDOOR SEASON REVIEW With a national bowling convention occupying the Albuquerque Convention Center, New Mexico was on the road all winter long after full home schedules the previous two years at the city s new indoor facility in downtown Albuquerque. The Lobos, however, continued to reach new marks in 2008, including several school records falling and a landmark trip to the NCAA Indoor Championship meet. The following are some of the highlights from the winter of 2008: Junior Sandy Fortner capped a tremendous indoor season with a 12th place finish in the pentathlon at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. Fortner was the first Lobo multi-event athlete and first UNM woman from the state of New Mexico to compete at the NCAA Indoor meet. Fortner punched her ticket to the NCAA Championships with an NCAA provisional qualifying and school record score of 4,005 en route to the Mountain West Conference pentathlon title on Feb. 28. She was the first UNM woman since 2003 (pole vaulter Bridgid Isworth) and just the second since 1984 to qualify for the NCAA Indoor meet. As expected, a lack of depth hampered the New Mexico men (6th points) and women (6th points) in the overall team standings at the Mountain West Conference Indoor Championships. The individuals who did compete, however, were outstanding, combining for two conference titles, eight all-mwc medals (4 - men, 4 - women) and three school records over the three days of competition. Junior Tiyana Peters cleared 5 7 (1.70m) to become the Lobos first threetime conference champion in the high jump. The Flanders, N.J. product joined Monique Harris (triple jump, ) and Keren Sari-Bentzur (pentathlon/long jump, 2003) as the only UNM women to win multiple conference titles indoors. She also earned all-mwc honors in the event for the third straight year indoors and fourth time in her career. Fortner, meanwhile, cleared 5 5 (1.65m) to tie for third place. Fortner, who cleared a conference-best 5 8 1/2 two days earlier in the pentathlon high jump, medaled in the event for the first time in career. It was her ninth event competition of the weekend. The Fort Sumner, N.M. product opened her day on the track with a fourth place finish in the women s 60-meter hurdles finals, clocking a career-best altitude adjusted time of Her finish was the best by a Lobo since Angela Whyte in 2000 as she became the first UNM woman to score in the event since Fortner piled up a team-high 21.5 points - nine behind High Point Award winner Karoline Koehler of San Diego State - in the pentathlon (first), high jump (tied for third), hurdles (fourth) and long jump (eighth). Sophomore Deanna Young turned in a remarkable conference triple jump performance. She broke former All-American Lavern Clarke s 18-year-old school record by four inches and was over 2 1/2 feet beyond her previous best in a third place finish with a mark of 42 7 (12.98m). In the men s triple jump, junior Domnick Meadows placed third to become the first Lobo ever to medal in the event indoors or outdoors. Meadows, who was fourth in the long jump, recorded a lifetime best mark of /4 (14.90m) - almost a foot beyond his previous best. The Albuquerque Del Norte product led the UNM men with 11 points during the meet. Junior transfer Lee Emanuel paced the Lobos on the track, using a late surge to take third in the mile with an altitude adjusted time of 4: seconds behind the winner, BYU junior Kyle Perry. Emanuel joined former All-American Matt Gonzales (second in 2004) as the Lobos lone all-mwc honorees in the event. After finishing sixth in 2007, Junior Josh Cosio turned in the best high jump performance by a Lobo man at the MWC Indoor Championships, clearing 6 8 3/4 (2.05m) to capture the silver medal. The Albuquerque Manzano product finished just one inch behind BYU senior Bryce Bergen, earning all-mwc honors for the first time indoors and second time in his career. Sophomore Alesha Walker broke a school record en route to a fourth place finish in the women s long jump. Walker became the first UNM woman to jump 20-feet indoors with a leap of 20 1/4 (6.10m), breaking Keren Sari-Bentzur s 2001 record by 1 1/4 inches. Walker turned in the best finish by a UNM woman in the event since Sari-Bentzur s victory in New Mexico grabbed another silver medal on the track as the men s distance medley relay team of junior Lee Emanuel, sophomore Philip Reid, redshirt freshman Ryan Steadman and junior Mat Ashton edged Air Force for second place. Sandy Fortner won the pentathlon with a school record score of 4,005. Fortner became the second woman in Lobo history to win a conference title in the pentathlon, joining Sari-Bentzur, who captured the MWC title in 2003 with a then school record 3,845 points. Fortner recorded the fourth-best score in MWC history. UNM had seven athletes record NCAA provisional qualifying times/marks during the season and saw school records fall in five events, including an 18-year-old record in the women s triple jump and 24-year-old standard in the men s mile.

7 MEET THREE NEW MEXICO HOSTS THE NEW MEXICO MULTIS & INVITATIONAL HEAD COACH JOE FRANKLIN JOE FRANKLIN Head Track & Field/Cross Country Coach Second Year - Purdue University, 1991 Joe Franklin enters his second year as the head track and field/cross country coach at the University of New Mexico. Franklin took over the program on June 18, 2007 after 13 years in the same role at Butler University. He replaced Matt Henry who retired after seven years at New Mexico. Franklin is the seventh men s and fifth women s head track and field coach at UNM. I m excited and thrilled, Franklin said. This is a very unique opportunity, especially when you look at the great tradition and history that New Mexico has had in cross country and track and field. I think the University of New Mexico and city of Albuquerque are tremendous settings for competition and training and places that provide unique opportunities for student-athletes. Franklin said he has lofty expectations for the future of the UNM track and cross country programs. The goals for the program are always to see where we can max out in every event, he said. Let s see how high we can go. Let s see if we can get to be a top- 10 team in cross country. Let s see if we can get to be a top-25 team in track and field. We want to have athletes in the sprints, throws, jumps, vaults and distance events qualifying for the NCAAs consistently and then see if we can build on that and start moving up in the team standings. Franklin wasted little time making his mark at New Mexico in his debut cross country season in the fall of Under his tutelage, senior Jeremy Johnson won the Mountain West Conference men s title and earned All-America honors by placing 20 th in his NCAA Cross Country Championship debut. The Lobo men turned in their best ever MWC performance, finishing second with a score of 51 the team s best at a conference meet since UNM also had a program-best four runners earn all-mwc honors on the men s side. The women s team, turned in one of the best cross country seasons in program history, in New Mexico won its first conference title, edging BYU in the closest Women s Championship meet in MWC history. The Lobos set program records with three first team all-conference runners and five total allconference honorees. Franklin was named MWC Women s Coach of the Year. Three weeks later, junior Nicky Archer (56th) led the Lobos to an 18th place finish at NCAA Championships in their first trip to the national meet since Franklin s debut season on the track in 2008 was filled with highlights. Junior Sandy Fortner became the first UNM woman to compete in the pentathlon at the NCAA Indoor Championships (12th) after winning MWC gold in the competition, along with junior high jumper Tiyana Peters. Five school records also fell during the indoor season, including the women s 5,000, long jump, triple jump and pentathon and the men s mile. The 2008 outdoor track season saw seven athletes - four men and three women - advance to NCAA Championship meet, giving New Mexico its best representation in the modern era of the championships since the men s and women s competition was combined into one meet in UNM had three athletes - seniors Robert Caldwell (pole vault) and Jeremy Johnson (10,000m), and junior Katie Coronado (javelin) - earn All-America honors - the most for UNM since Coronado s silver medal in the javelin was the best ever recorded by a New Mexico woman at the NCAA Championships. A program record-tying 13 individuals (in 16 events) advanced to the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships, helping the men s (32nd) and women s (34th) teams each finish among the top-40 in the national rankings. The UNM women were the second-highest MWC team in the rankings, behind No. 23 TCU. New Mexico earned 11 all-conference medals, including five golds, at the MWC Championships. The women s score of 78 was their highest at the conference meet since Caldwell and Coronado gave UNM a sweep of the men s and women s MWC Outstanding Performer awards. Four women s outdoor records were also set in 2008 with new marks established in the 3,000 steeplechase, long jump, javelin and heptathlon. During his time in Indianapolis, Franklin built the Butler program into a national force in men s and women s cross country. He led eight teams (six men s, two women s) to the NCAA Cross Country Championships between with seven squads earning top-25 finishes. In 2004, Franklin was named NCAA Cross Country Coach of the Year after leading the Butler men to a program-best fourth place finish at the national meet. The Bulldogs sent a team to the NCAA Championships five of the last six years Franklin was at the helm and dominated the Horizon Conference in cross country. In 2006, the men s team won its ninth straight conference title, while the women won their fifth in a row. Franklin earned conference Coach of the Year honors 17 times in cross country and was named Men s Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year in He also earned conference Indoor Track Coach of the Year honors twice at Butler. Under Franklin, Butler athletes earned track or cross country All-America honors nine times, won 128 conference titles and earned 276 all-conference awards. The Bulldogs had three runners place among the top-5 at the NCAA Cross Country Championships with Julius Mwangi taking third in 1998, Mark Tucker placing fourth in 2002 and Victoria Mitchell finishing fourth in On the track, Butler had three outdoor All-Americans with Mitchell winning the 3,000-meter steeplechase national title in 2005, Becky Lyne finishing third in the 800 in 2003 and Fraser Thompson placing seventh in the 5,000 in Scott Overall became Butler s first indoor track All-American in 2007 when he finished sixth in the mile run.
