HISTORIC INDOOR SCHEDULE ON TAP IN 06 The City of Albuquerque and the University of New Mexico are set to become one of the nation s premier destinations for indoor track and field competition this winter. The city will host eight meets in 2006, including six collegiate events, on its 2-year-old track inside the Albuquerque Convention Center. UNM head coach Matt Henry, a lifelong Albuquerquean and former Lobo All-American, said the ambitious indoor schedule is the best in program history. This is definitely the best schedule we ve put together and we think it s probably the best group of collegiate indoor meets that s ever been scheduled here, Henry said. A lot of us were young, but we remember when indoor track and field was big in Albuquerque and we know we have an opportunity to make it special again. The list of teams visiting the Duke City this winter reads like a Who s Who list of NCAA track and field with Air Force, Arizona, Arizona State, BYU, California, Colorado State, Florida, Florida State, Houston, LSU, San Diego State, TCU, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, UNLV, USC, Utah, UTEP and Wyoming among the schools scheduled to compete at the Convention Center. We re excited about seeing these teams come through here, Henry said. We know we re going to have to step it up a little bit, but our kids are really looking forward to competing against some of the best track and field athletes in the country at home in front of our crowd. The season gets underway on Jan. 14 with the Mark Shumate Open, which will be the first NCAA sanctioned indoor meet in Albuquerque since the 1987 Western Athletic Conference Championships were held in Tingley Coliseum. The Shumate Open will be the first three all-comer meets held at the Convention Center in 06, all of which will be open to any competitor, regardless of age or ability. All-comer meets will also be held on Jan. 22 and Feb. 12. The First to the Finish High School Invitational will also take place at the Convention Center on Feb. 18. On Jan. 21 UNM will host what should be one of the best early-season meets in the country, the Modrall Sperling Lobo Invitational. Arizona, BYU, Cal, Colorado State, Florida State, LSU Texas A&M, Rice, Portland State, USC and UTEP will join New Mexico to create a world-class field in the first collegiate-only meet at the Convention Center. Eight of the 12 had either their men s or women s teams finish among the top-25 at the NCAA Indoor or Outdoor Championships a year ago. Seven returning individual national champions and the LSU men s champion 4x400- meter relay team are scheduled to be among the field. Twelve teams visit Albuquerque the next week for the three-day University of New Mexico Invitational. The meet opens with two days of pentathlon and heptathlon competition, Jan , followed by the main events on Jan. 28. Arizona State, Florida, TCU, Texas, Texas Tech, Long Beach State, New Mexico State, Oral Roberts and Division II powers Adams State and Western State will be among the field. Following their lone road trip of the indoor season to Nebraska, the Lobos return home on Feb. 11 to host six teams, including the Conference USA champion Houston Cougars and D-II national champion Abilene Christian, in the Albuquerque Invitational.

3 2006 INDOOR TRACK & FIELD NEW MEXICO HOSTS MARK SHUMATE OPEN MEET NOTES Two weeks later, the Convention Center will be the site of 2006 Mountain West Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships (Feb ), which moves to the Duke City after six years at the Air Force Academy s Cadet Field House in Colorado Springs, Colo. Air Force also hosted the Western Athletic Conference Indoor Championships for 12 straight years before the MWC was formed. New Mexico hosted the WAC Indoor Championship meet at Tingley Coliseum six times between INDOOR TRACK AT THE ALBUQUERQUE CONVENTION CENTER Good timing, a proactive city council and an irresistible sale all contributed to the return of indoor track and field to the Albuquerque after nearly a 20-year absence. During the spring of 2004 Albuquerque city leaders learned of a $1 million unused and undamaged indoor track sitting in storage in Canada that could be purchased for a mere $500,000. The state-of-the-art Mondo track had originally been ordered, then later declined, for use in the Los Angeles Staples Center arena. The track finally found a home inside the Convention Center in downtown Albuquerque and made its debut on Jan. 15, 2005 for the inaugural Albuquerque All-Comers meet. Nearly identical to the track used by the University of Arkansas at the Randal Tyson Track Center, Albuquerque s new indoor facility received rave reviews from athletes, coaches and fans. Like the Arkansas facility, which has been the site of every NCAA Indoor Championship meet since 2000, the city of Albuquerque now has an indoor track that will be a destination for some of the nation s premier events. The new indoor track is a 200-meter, 60-degree banked track that has 60m straightaways running the entire length of the facility. It also includes men's and women's jumping runways and pits, as well as an areas for shot put, pole vault and high jump events. The surface of the track is red and white Mondo. The Albuquerque All-Comers meet marked the University of New Mexico s first indoor competition at home since hosting the 1987 Western Athletic Conference Championships in Tingley Coliseum at the New Mexico State Fairgrounds. Current UNM assistant coach Scott Steffan, who competed at the '87 WAC Championships as freshman decathlete, said the new indoor track will provide a tremendous boost to head coach Matt Henry's rejuvenated Lobo track and field program. The U.S. Air Force Academy had hosted every Mountain West Conference Indoor Championship meet since the league formed in 1999, but when the Albuquerque facility was unveiled, a change of venue was quickly announed for the 2006 MWC Indoor Championships. In the 1960s and 70s Albuquerque was one of the nation's elite indoor track and field locations, drawing top professional and collegiate talent to compete in front of the large crowds at the annual Jaycee meets. The 1966 AAU Indoor Nationals (now known as the USA Indoor Track & Field Championships) drew a two-day total of nearly 20,000 fans to Tingley Coliseum and was featured on the March 14 cover of Sports Illustrated. Albuquerque officials were able to lure the meet away from its regular home at Madison Square Garden in New York City that year. In the new Albuquerque Convention Center facility, city leaders and track and field enthusiasts have a reason to stand up and cheer once again. GOT WIRELESS??? 4 2006 INDOOR TRACK & FIELD NEW MEXICO HOSTS MARK SHUMATE OPEN WOMEN S OUTLOOK Boasting some of the top young talent in the do some great things in the 800 this year. Riann had a rough Mountain West Conference, in addition to an outstanding core of veterans, the New Mexico women spring. She works extremely hard, is very talented and hates to cross country season, but my goal is to get her to regionals this lose. should be one of the league s top up-and-coming teams in The balanced UNM squad returns It looks like you re going to have a real presence in the jumps all-mwc athletes in the sprints/relays, distance this year with sophomore Tiyana Peters and freshman events, pole vault and throws, as well as four NCAA Khristina Curtis high jumping, and the addition of freshman regional qualifiers. Sixth-year head coach Matt Hagit Salamon in the long and triple. Henry, who was named MWC Women s Cross Country Coach of the Year in 2005, sat down before the season to share his thoughts on the Lobo women. It looks like you have one of the Mountain West s most promising sprint groups this year - sophomores Ariel Burr and Kristan Matison were both all-conference runners last spring, and senior Kimilia Davis is also back this year. I think we do. We have almost everybody back, including Kimilia, who has always been the backbone of our sprint group. Behind the scenes, she s the motivator and the leader. Coming out of high school we weren t sure what she would be able to do, but she has worked very, very hard and she can really run. Of course Ariel ran very fast and Kristan Matison really had a great outdoor season last year. They re both a little banged up right now, but when we get them healthy, I think they re going to do something special for us. The one who really looked good this past fall was (sophomore) Shakira Williams. She was young and maybe a little bit lost last year, but we re looking for some nice things from her this season. We also have (sophomore) Tabatha (Shaw) back with us and she s gotten stronger too. Then if you include some our new girls like Katie Candelaria and Christina Zarrella - I m really anxious to see what we can do. Well, we think so. Tiyana was hurt much of the year, but did really well at the end of the outdoor season. She s had a pretty good fall and is going to keep getting better. Khristina Curtis is very, very talented and we re looking forward to seeing how she does in her first year. Hagit is a hard worker, she was an accomplished jumper in Israel and she s done some nice things in practice. We re anxious to see what she can do starting with the indoor season. How much have all of your jumpers benefited from having Keren Bentzur now as the full time assistant coach? It s helped us a lot. She s brought a different attitude to the team. As a competitor, Keren was very aggressive and was never afraid to say or do whatever was necessary to help make our program better. I m really proud that we have a University of New Mexico graduate that knows our program and is committed to helping us succeed. She s very knowledgeable about track and field and I think we ve got an outstanding heptathlon and jumps coach here. Whitney Johnson really had a great rookie season last year, earning all-conference honors and qualifying for regionals in the pole vault - what are your goals for her this season? Led by seniors Jacquelyne Gallegos and Timmie Murphy, your distance group established themselves as one of the best in school history during this past cross country season, finishing second in the MWC and making a strong push for an NCAA berth - what do you expect to see out of them on the track? Jackie s our most experienced runner, and she s still hurting a little from the cross country season, but we know she can really run fast. Jackie is able to run anything we need her to from 1,500 to a 10K. She s got that attitude that no matter what race she s in, she s going to be competitive. Timmie is just going to run indoors and redshirt outdoors, but we re really going to try to do something special with her indoors. She had a great cross country season and we just hope we can keep that momentum going on the track. We re thankful that we were able to redshirt (freshman) Leslie Luna last year. She s really young, but as we saw this past fall, she s got some real potential and could turn some heads this spring. She s willing to work hard and loves what she s doing. We also think (junior) Riann Lucy is ready to She took some big steps last year. I don t know if she can make as big a jump in her second season, but she s another one of those who really enjoys what she s doing and has been a great addition to our team. Whitney has been working hard to be one of the best in our conference and we re hoping she can also do some things at the regional meet this year. One of the best stories on your team is senior Jamie Fishencord who has really come from nowhere to be one of the best hammer throwers in country - how did she make such dramatic improvement? I don t know, maybe it was because of us. That first year, we didn t think she had the ability to help us. I think she probably took that as a challenge and said You know what, these guys don t think I m any good, but I m going to show them what I can do. She s worked very hard and we re sure glad we have her back for another year. She s definitely one of our top candidates to get to nationals this spring.

5 2006 INDOOR TRACK & FIELD NEW MEXICO HOSTS MARK SHUMATE OPEN MEN S OUTLOOK Like the women s team, the New Mexico men You have a lot of weapons in the pole vault with a pair of veterans in senior Derek Mackel and junior Robert Caldwell also feature a balanced blend of veterans and promising young prospects that the coaching staff believes with sophomore Zach Graham, who has shown a lot of po- that are both among the best in MWC and the country, along will make the 2006 season a successful one. The tential - what do you think these guys are capable of this Lobos return a pair of MWC champions and national year? qualifiers in seniors Dan Feltman (decathlon) and Derek and Robert have already shown that they re going to Matt Keeran (javelin), though Feltman will redshirt jump really high this year. If they re healthy, I d be surprised if the outdoor season. UNM boasts one of the top pole they can t make it to the NCAAs. Derek has a sore knee that vault units in the region, has excellent depth and acts up on him from time to time, especially outdoors. The indoor surface has a little more bounce and is a little easier on talent in the sprints and distance events, and some him. Right now he s really healthy though and I think he s future standouts in the field events. Coach Henry going to benefit a lot from getting to compete at home so much talked about the men of New Mexico prior to the this winter. Zach is a young guy, but showed some solid improvement during the fall. I d say we re definitely blessed with season. some pretty nice vaulters. You lost a solid MWC finalist in Ahmed Raji, but this group of sprinters looks like they could really make some noise in the conference this year, including sophomore Jarrin Solomon who was the runner-up in the 400 and a regional qualifier last season. Like the women, we have just about all our sprinters back this year. Jarrin was a really a soccer guy in high school and did track on the side, so we weren t sure what he could do for us right away. He came in though, worked hard, studied his competitors and took some huge steps last year. We hope he takes a few more this year and keeps getting better. He s got a great future ahead of him as does (junior) Jeramie White, who I think is one of our most talented guys. I think he s grown up more and more each year and he s very versatile. He can run a 100 up through a 400 and be very competitive. We re also hoping our two football guys, (senior) Aaron Brack and (sophomore) Marcus Smith, can help us even more this year. Aaron should be with us all year and Marcus will join us at the end of the outdoor season, but with those guys, we think we ve got a great shot to win that short relay at the conference meet. We were winning it last year before we ran out of the zone on the final exchange, but we ve got them all back and if we can get the stick around I think we can run pretty fast. Fifth-year senior Cameron Clarke is back for his final outdoor season after earning all-mwc honors indoors in the 800 last year and you also have junior Jeremy Johnson back in cherry and silver after a year at Arizona - what impact will these two play in the distance events? I ve always said that Cameron is probably the most talented guy we have. He did a good job in the 800 last year and I feel comfortable putting him in there again as well as the 1,500, but I really think Cameron could be at his best in the 5,000 meters. Hopefully he ll come out this spring and make his final season a big one. I think Jeremy is going to make a real impact this year. He s our main guy right now in the 3,000 and 5,000. Of course he s been down a winding road in his career, starting with us, then going to Arizona - where he got hurt - before coming back. He s been training with us full time since the fall and has really shown a lot of promise. There s a lot of young talent in the jumps this year, do you think they ll be ready to make an impact at the conference meet? (Sophomore) Domnick Meadows really had a great fall and I already know he s going to jump further than he ever has. He s really had some great direction and coaching, and you ll see some nice things out of Domnick this year. We ve also got three new high jumpers (freshmen Roy Collins, Josh Cosio, Stuart St. Louis) who I think are all going to be a big surprise to people. I think we can do very well with those guys and I m really looking forward to seeing what they can do. Matt Keeran is your leader in the javelin and a strong candidate to return to nationals, but how much will freshman Anthony Fairbanks help you this year? We ve really got two big time competitors in the javelin. We ll miss Dan Feltman s arm this spring, but I know both of those guys will definitely go to the regionals and will score big points for us at the conference meet. Between coming off elbow surgery and hurting his hamstring right before nationals, Keeran never was right last year. He s completely healthy now though - in fact I think his elbow is a little stronger than it was before his surgery - and that guy is going throw a long way this year. We re really fortunate to have Fairbanks with us also. He s going to help us a lot this year and as he gets bigger and stronger, I think he could be one the best in the country down the road. Dan Feltman is at his best outdoors in the decathlon where he can utilize his best event, the javelin, but what are your goals for him in his final indoor season and what led to your decision to redshirt him in the spring? We re really hoping he can be a national qualifier in the heptathlon indoors. We ve always had trouble with injuries, but if Feltman can stay healthy, he is something special. Right now, he s ready to go and I think he has a great indoor season in him. Last year, we weren t completely sure that we were going to redshirt him outdoors, but I think in the long run it s really going to help him a great deal. This is going to give him another year of aging, which is so valuable, especially in that event. When he comes back next spring, I think the people at nationals are going to have to look out for Dan Feltman.

7 2006 INDOOR TRACK & FIELD NEW MEXICO HOSTS MARK SHUMATE OPEN HEAD COACH MATT HENRY MATT HENRY Head Coach Distance/Middle Distance/Cross Country Sixth Year University of New Mexico, 1975 When Matt Henry was named head track and Prior to taking over the cross country and track and field programs, field coach at his alma mater in June of 2000, Henry had been the head coach of the boy's and girl's track and cross he was presented with a challenging task: lead country teams at La Cueva High School in Albuquerque since the school what had been a stagnant program up the opened in While at La Cueva, he led the Bears to four straight Mountain West Conference rankings and boy's state track titles from , three state boy s cross country back to the national stage it starred upon throughout much of the 1960s, championships ( , 98) and a pair in girl's cross country ( ). 70s and 80s. Henry s success earned him National High School Track Coach of the Thanks to the leadership and dedication of Henry and his staff, the Year honors in University of New Mexico now boasts one of the most improved track Matt and Mark Henry are part of a great lineage with extensive ties and field programs in the country. Built upon L-R: a foundation Ben Ortega, of elite Matt in-state Gonzales, to the Cameron University Clarke of New Mexico. Their father, Gwinn "Bub" Henry, spent talent with a blend of premier national and international competitors, the Lobos continue to reach new heights each year. Under Henry s tutelage UNM athletes have gone to the NCAA Championship meet four years in a row, earned three All-America awards, won 21 MWC event titles and claimed all-mwc honors 90 times since Henry s fellow coaches, meanwhile, have recognized his accomplishments, naming him MWC Coach of the Year for men s outdoor track in 2002 and again in 2005 for women s cross country. An aggressive campaign by Henry and his staff have helped to make dramatic improvements to New Mexico s track and field facilities. With a state-of-the-art indoor facility located in the heart of downtown set to officially open in the winter of 2006 and renovations underway at Great Friends of UNM Track Stadium, Albuquerque is once again one of the top track and field destinations in America. For Henry and his twin brother, associate head coach Mark Henry, the chance to return to their alma mater to lead the Lobo track and field program into the 21st century was a once in a lifetime opportunity. I m really proud to be the track and cross country coach at UNM, said Matt Henry. It s a dream that I thought would never come true. It s a privilege to be at the school where I got my education and competed. We may not have a big name yet, but there s something going right here at New Mexico. We have tremendous tradition here, we re very proud to be Lobos and we think this is a very special place to be. An outstanding middle distance man himself in the early 1970s, Henry has returned New Mexico to its traditional place among the nation s top distance running schools. Just a few years after his return to UNM, Henry s homegrown track and cross country runners established themselves as one of the premier distance forces in the country. Under Henry s tutelage, Santa Fe High School product Matt Gonzales has become one of America s top young distance prospects. Gonzales was one of most decorated runners in UNM history, earning All-America honors twice in cross country and three times on the track. He also led all collegiate runners by finishing sixth in the 5,000 at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials and was 11th in the 10,000 at the 2003 USA Championships. Since turning pro in the summer of 05, Gonzales has continued to train under Henry. Last November, he placed second at the U.S. 10K Championships road race and went on to help Team USA notch its highest finish ever (3rd) at the 2005 International Chiba Ekiden in Japan. Henry s runners have earned a combined 22 all-mwc awards on the track in the distance and middle distance events, including 4 conference titles. The Lobos have set school indoor records in the 3,000 (women), 5,000 (men) and distance medley relay (men and women), and outdoor records in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (women) and 5,000 (men) during Henry s tenure. New Mexico has also earned all-mwc cross country honors 13 times, all-mountain Region eight times and sent five individuals and one team to the NCAA Cross Country Championships. In 2004, Henry put together the finest cross country team in school history. Led by two All-Americans in Gonzales (2nd) and freshman Shadrack Kiptoo-Biwott (14th), the men of New Mexico placed a program-best ninth at the NCAA Championship meet. True to the blue collar character of the program, it was a dramatic late surge by the team s fifth scoring running, fifth-year walk-on Sean Flaherty, that propelled the Lobos into the top years at UNM, most of that time as the Director of the Alumni Association. Bub and all five of his sons attended the University of New Mexico. Bub's father, Gwinn, was the Lobos athletics director, head football coach and head track coach for three seasons from Gwinn Henry compiled a record on the gridiron, including a Border Conference championship in 1934 with an 8-1 mark.
