3 MEET INFORMATION ENTRY DEADLINE: Friday March 28 th 2014 or when fields are full Team & Individual registration can be found at Santabarbaratc.org Online credit card payment and mail in check option is available. If you prefer check payment, please send with sufficient time prior to meet day. Contact Josh Priester for questions about registration. Phone ENTRY FEE $65 per athlete. Once entries close, fees are due even if competitor(s) scratch prior to race time. Please make checks out to: Women s Athletic Performance Foundation. PARKING & ENTRY Parking at Westmont College is free of charge. There are three primary parking lots, the track parking lot is reserved for athletes, coaches and officials and it is adjacent to the track facility. For spectators, please proceed past the track and above the baseball diamond to the upper lot. If this lot is full there will be parking attendants to escort additional vehicles. Entry into the stadium will be allowed from the South entrance and Main entrance above the venue by the observatory. SPECTATOR FEE Spectators will not be charged an entry fee, but a donation to the Women s Athletic Performance Foundation is appreciated. No pets allowed on campus. CLERK OF THE COURSE/CHECK IN Clerk of the Course will be located next to the scoreboard at the end of the javelin runway. There will be a white tent with a check in table. Athletes, please check in at least one hour prior to the first event.

4 IMPLEMENT WEIGH-INS Located in the Track & Field Equipment Center immediately next to the Clerk of the Course/Check in. Weigh-ins for both days of competition will take place from 9am to 11:00am on Friday, April 4 th only. Implements will be weighed-in on Day 1, and will be labeled and stored for each competitor. Athletes are welcome to drop off implements on Thursday to be stored and weighed Friday morning. POLE VAULT POLE STORAGE Storage is available. However, all poles must be secured in a bag or tube and properly marked with institution or athlete identification. Please contact Josh Priester to make arrangements at josh@wapf.us prior to event day. If you are shipping poles in, the campus address is 955 La Paz Road, Santa Barbara, CA Deliveries to be directed to: Russell Smelley, Track and Field. You must arrange for all shipping, including pickup and travel. Westmont College and the SBTC will not be responsible for shipping and handling of outgoing poles. WARM-UP Warm-ups will be allowed on the main facility, we will clear the track, field, and necessary areas to accommodate competitors and meet management. COACH & SPECTATOR ACCESS Coaches will be allowed access on the field at every point of the meet. Spectators will be allowed to follow the events around during the competition. The infield will be closed during the javelin and discus. Pay attention to athletes warming up on the track and in the field. GOVERNING RULES & TIMING Sam Adams Combined Events is a USATF Sanctioned competition. Additionally, the competition has an Elite Sanction by USATF. ATHLETIC TRAINERS Westmont College will have an emergency treatment center set-up for trainers to serve athletes and will provide access to facilities, and supervise the event. Trainers should provide supplies and equipment for all medical needs.

5 ICE BATHS Will be available for use following both days of competition. SHOWER FACILITIES The Westmont Athletic locker room is available for use. However, please bring towels and any other necessary items. WESTMONT POOL The Westmont campus pool will be opened following day 1 and day 2 of competition. Please notify meet management ahead of time if you intend on using this facility. SPIKES 3/16 spikes only, pyramid or needles, on track and runways. Exception: Javelin/High Jump may use 3/8 pyramids Spikes available for sale 12 for $2.00 HIGH JUMP & POLE VAULT Two pits will be used for the high jump. Determination of field distribution will be decided by the opening height of the jumper. We will operate an A and a B pit for the competition. There will be one pit for the decathlon pole vault. LONG JUMP / JAVELIN / SHOT We will utilize two runways/circles if the field sizes require it. Meet management will make final decision several days prior to the event. SPRINTS & HURDLES Our objective is to allow for favorable conditions for the athlete. We will make every reasonable effort to run with the wind.

7 ABOUT COACH SAM ADAMS He was known simply as The Rock during his 34 years as Head Track & Field Coach at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). A man of chiseled face and heart of gold, Sam Adams was loved by the numerous athletes who were fortunate to train under him. UCSB coach Nick Carter took him on as an assistant in 1959, and he succeeded Carter as head coach in Before Sam retired in 1992 he had coached the UCSB Gauchos to a runner-up finish at both the 1967 and 1968 NCAA College Division National Championships. Sam competed in track and field at Cal Berkeley and finished fifth in the decathlon at the 1956 U.S. Olympic Trials. His expertise in the decathlon launched Adams into international prominence. He made three trips to the former Soviet Union as coach of national multi-event teams during the cold war years. As an athlete, Sam competed in the 1952 and 1956 Olympic trials in javelin and decathlon. As a coach, Sam created a welcoming atmosphere at UCSB as Olympic hopefuls came from around the world to train in Santa Barbara. This project would later come to be known as the Santa Barbara Outreach, and its impact was felt on a global scale. Sam coached and developed many athletes over the years, among them the list of names include Bill Toomey, Dave Thoreson, Jerry Moro, Olaf Lange, Jürgen Hingsen and Jane Frederick Highlights of Sam s career included being selected as the USA National Team Head Coach in 1981 and for the Pan American Competition. He was the USA Head Coach for the first USA dual meet with E. Germany and twice led the USA team to Russia. As a coach there is many quantifiable ways in which ones impact can be measured. In addition to the Olympic gold medalists, Olympians, Olympic Trials competitors and international athletes that Sam directly worked with, his impact in the sport continues to be felt to this day as a result of his work with athletes who became coaches.
