Peter De Leo Triathlon WA has provided me with some amazing goals and personal achievements since I started participating in the sport. The opportunity to serve the triathlon community in WA through a board position allows me to contribute in the delivery of triathlon as a lifestyle pursuit for others. I am a member of the Stadium Triathlon Club (STC), Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) and hold an MBA. I have 20 years experience as a leader within the engineering and construction industry and presently run my own Engineering Consultancy business. My triathlon journey is as much about family involvement as it is about pushing myself. My wife and four daughters participate through various TRYstars, kids events and volunteer roles which gives us an opportunity to have shared experiences that I place great value on. I m an active club member throughout the year training for the longer format events with my annual highlight being the Karri Valley Triathlon swim leg. I hold the Triathlon WA board members who are members of STC in high regard and anticipate the other leadership representatives are similarly inspiring. I welcome any opportunity to apply my skills to this team. Ben King Ben is a family lawyer and former professional cyclist. During Ben s cycling career, he rode in some of the world s biggest races including the Tour of California, U23 World Championships, Tour de L Avenir and Paris Roubaix. As a former AIS and WAIS scholarship holder and Australian representative, Ben has had significant exposure to sports administration and high-performance development programs. Ben holds a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Western Australia and obtained a Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice in mid Ben currently works for a top tier family law firm, focusing primarily on complex property settlement disputes for high net worth individuals. Ben is passionate about the sport of triathlon and now competes socially in half and full IRONMAN events. Ben has a particular interest in encouraging junior athletes and everyday people to participate in local training and racing. Ben first competed in triathlon in 2004 and after a number of years racing his bike returned to competing in triathlons for the healthy lifestyle and community spirit which are synonymous with the sport. In Ben s spare time he coaches and mentors a number of talented young cyclists including Ben O Connor, who now races for the Pro-Tour Team, Dimension Data. Steve Norton Steve has been involved in triathlon for a number of years through competing and coaching and, as a Regional Technical Official (L2) and a National Technical Official (ITU), is one of TWA s senior Technical Officials. He is also the Chairperson of the Technical Reference Panel and a member of Triathlon Australia s Ethics and Integrity Panel. Steve has served on the TWA Board since 2014 as Vice President. Steve has worked in State Government for over 20 years and has experience in Leadership and Governance. He has been involved in emergency services and response groups and is a qualified Investigator. He has also completed the Australian Institute of Company Directors course on Governance Foundations for the Not For Profit Director and the Advanced Governance Course. 1
As a Board Member, Steve s focus will be on ensuring accountability and working towards improving membership and stakeholder participation. Steve enjoys the community of triathlon and will work to ensure that participants of all ages and abilities can continue to enjoy the benefits of this sport in an affordable, fair and safe environment. He wishes to continue to educate the community on the positive aspects of this sport including personal development, health and wellbeing, sportsmanship and camaraderie and inspire them to give it a go! Glenn Sparidaans I would welcome the opportunity to contribute to the continued success of triathlon in Western Australia as a Board Member of Triathlon WA. I hold a degree in Chemical Engineering, a Masters of Business Administration (MBA), and have over 12 years of experience as an Operations Superintendent and a Business Planner. I am skilled in developing long-term strategic business plans, evaluation of risks and opportunities associated with strategic plans, financial modelling and evaluation of large scale projects in order to guide decision-making. I offer a calm manner, an analytical business perspective and a balanced approach to engaging on challenging topics. I believe in making a positive contribution to the community in which we live. I have volunteered with the organising committee for the South West Young Achievers Program, and the Fire and Rescue Service as brigade secretary. Currently I volunteer as a Surf Lifesaver at Swanbourne-Nedlands SLSC. I am proud to have been able to give back to the community in a meaningful way. My interest in triathlon started 6 years ago when I made a commitment to live a healthier, more active lifestyle. After learning how to swim and entering my first enticer event through Bunbury Triathlon Club, I was determined to continue to improve. I am currently an active member of Stadium Triathlon Club. Participating in triathlon through local clubs has introduced me to many great athletes and friends, which have fuelled my passion for the sport. My greatest personal achievement has been competing in full distance IRONMAN and qualifying for the 2018 IRONMAN World Championships in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. My objective, as a Triathlon WA Board Member and representative of the local triathlon community, is to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to realise their goals in this sport whatever they may be. Jo D Arcy I have always led a positive and fit lifestyle, with an enduring aspiration to make a difference both professionally and voluntarily. I have been very determined to succeed from a young age and have successfully managed employment and study from my school years and through my university studies. Whilst studying my double degree in Finance/ Economics and Psychology at University, I was working for a luxury car dealer on their sales frontline and for an international sporting events company. During that time I achieved Dux of the University in Statistics, was one of the main sales achievers at the dealership and organised and hosted national corporate sports for many of Australia s key sporting events. I was very curious about how the financial concepts that I studied at university were in fact implemented and transacted in business dealings. I initially started working in the financial planning space in a complex firm that typically dealt with tax issues on a global level. 2
I am comfortable with ambiguity and I am always looking to challenge myself further. I decided my next step was to look outside my home city of Melbourne and commenced working with ANZ in Western Australia. Whilst with ANZ I held a number of roles including developing Branch Manager, Personal Home Loan Lender and Private Bank Associate. My final role as PBA really required top end meticulous service as we dealt with many sophisticated and well-established members of the community on their complex personal financial requirements. For the last three and a half years I have been working with CBA and their Corporate team looking after business clients with complex structures. Most recently I am in a specialist role covering regional WA as far north as Kununurra to as far south of Perth as Albany. Whilst committed to making a difference in my work I have represented Australia at the triathlon World Championships hosted in Canada in 2014, Australia in 2016 and America in I have also been a brand ambassador for a number of women s sports brands with the hope that I can encourage other women to believe anything is possible. Michelle Potter Michelle Potter is an experienced Sales and Marketing Director with a love of market research, data analysis and insight driven results. She has a Bachelor of Science degree and over 25 years of experience in her field. Michelle is currently employed by GfK as an Account Director with responsibility for clients across WA and SA in both the media and retail sectors and her ability to turn numbers into informative, relevant market information helps build strong, trusting client relationships. In addition, Michelle s passion for understanding people ensures that not only does she build a team with great rapport but also an understanding of each other s key skills. In turn this allows Michelle to develop the team into future leaders, with an ongoing succession plan. Watching her graduates become successful Directors themselves, defines, for Michelle, the true meaning of success. Michelle is also a qualified children s swimming teacher with a lifelong love of the water and was often inspired by family and friends competing in triathlons. She finally decided to take on the challenge herself two years ago and since then has also encouraged several friends to join her. She is now looking forward to her first team IRONMAN 70.3 event. Ross Pedlow I, Ross Pedlow have been involved in triathlon and multisport for the last 30 years. As an athlete I have competed at all levels of the sport - from a high-level open athlete to a high-end age group athlete, and now to someone who is just happy to go around and have fun. I am the current President and founder of Exceed Triathlon Club, which has broken new ground in club structure and leads innovation in the WA triathlon community. I work as a full-time professional triathlon coach taking age group athletes to new levels and producing plenty of professional triathletes. I oversee our TRYstars kids and I am currently running our novice course for first time triathletes. I am also one of the race founders and directors of WA s new age group draft legal triathlon series (EXSS), an Australian first in triathlon. 3
I am passionate about triathlon and the direction Triathlon WA takes now and into the future, its governance and the way it executes its task as the state body. I believe the Triathlon WA Board needs a current Club President and a current practicing Coach with real triathlon experience at all levels to help guide the sport. Matthew Pilbeam Since 2012 I have been an active and involved member of Triathlon WA with my immediate family directly involved from the TRYstars program to the elite ITU pathways and World Championship events in recent years. Personally, I have participated in multiple years of the tri series, half IRONMAN events and hopefully my first IRONMAN in December this year. My professional background began in the electrical trade industry before moving into corporate governance and health and safety risk. I am currently employed as General Manager - Safety at Mineral Resources Limited (MRL) where I am responsible for the development and implementation of the organisation s health and safety systems, corporate governance assurance and risk mitigation programs. I also currently hold a position on the Triathlon WA Governance Committee. I believe I hold the necessary qualifications, experience and business acumen to have effective impact in achieving Triathlon WA s objectives as outlined in the supporting documentation. I see Triathlon WA at the crossroads of opportunity following many years of successful membership numbers now reducing and member expectation always increasing. There is opportunity to make meaningful change as the governing body in this state and allow triathlon clubs to facilitate programs with benefits returning to those clubs directly. The need for Triathlon WA to provide the appropriate oversight and governance is critical in the ongoing sustainability of the sport in this state, this is something I am passionate about and motivated to see continue and improve over the next few years. Steve Lyon I would like to be considered for a Board Member position with Triathlon WA. I have been involved in the sport of triathlon for a number of years now and have competed in various events in WA; most recently competing at the 2018 ITU World Championships. I am passionate about triathlon and the benefits the sport brings to individuals, teams and communities; I would like to become more involved in the organisational aspects and promotion of triathlon to further the sport, hence my application to become a Board Member. I am currently the General Manager for Asset Integrity at Quadrant Energy; an oil and gas exploration and production company. In my current position I am accountable for a number of key areas within the business and have had significant exposure to the skills listed in the Requirements for the Role document on the Triathlon WA website. My skills include, but are not limited to, risk management, understanding regulatory frameworks and legislation, understanding business opportunities and threats and how to prioritise these, interpretation of financial reports and accountability for substantial budgets, strategic thinking and excellent communication, both written and verbal. I consider myself of sound and reputable character and well suited to board membership. I am currently a board member for ACEPT; a world-class oil and gas training facility based in Munster. This has provided me with experience at a board level which I believe makes me suited to this vacancy. I believe I would bring my drive and enthusiasm to the position. 4
I have listed some of my qualifications and certifications below for information. Master's degree qualified Process Engineer, Chartered Engineer, Professional Process Safety Engineer, Certified Maintenance and Reliability Professional, Diploma of Management. John Hallis I read with interest the call for new Board Members to help shape the future direction of Triathlon WA. My expertise lies in the fields of information technology, telecommunications and financial services with over 30 years of experience in Australia and overseas. For the past eight years I have had my own business, providing customer loyalty solutions to high-end retailers, counting CHANEL and Tiffany & Co. among my customer base. I have global experience in the financial services payment industry, telecommunications, ICT vendor and software industries and have led large, geographically dispersed technical support and maintenance, customer service and other services teams. I have had extensive executive ownership for revenue and profitability objectives and am goal and customer focused with a proven record of consistently meeting and exceeding aggressive sales and service revenue, financial and operational key performance goals. In 2017, my wife and I permanently moved back to Western Australia from NSW. My triathlon journey began in 2008 when I signed up for the Cole Classic 1km charity swim. At the time, I was an unhealthy 120kg and that swim was a struggle. In 2016, I competed in the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championships and again in 2017 at Tennessee. The Kona finish line is my next goal. In NSW, I was an active member of the Balmoral Triathlon Club Committee and in WA I have recently joined the Fremantle Triathlon Club. Having experienced first-hand the physical and mental benefits of the triathlon lifestyle, I am keen to remain involved in the sport, both at a local and state level, and am committed to building awareness of, and participation in, the WA triathlon community. Dr Robert Suriano I completed my first triathlon in 1986 and have over 30 years experience in this sport firstly as a competitor in Melbourne and then in Perth from On arriving in Perth to complete my PhD in sport science at UWA, I became more involved in the sport and, over the last 18 years, I have undertaken the following roles: Board member of Triathlon WA ( ) - Roles included State Coaching Director, Vice President ( ) and I was also involved in the committee that established the inaugural Busselton Half- IRONMAN in Stadium Triathlon Club - I was a member from 2000 to 2015 and was engaged as the Head Coach ( ) and Race Director of the Karri Valley Triathlon ( ). During this period, I also developed the role of Administrative Assistant and General Manager for the club working with the board to deliver the club s objectives. 5
Perth Triathlon Club - In 2015 I established the club and became the inaugural president and head coach. In 2017 I established the first Paratriathlon Training Squad. As my roles with clubs have now diminished, I am now seeking to return to the Triathlon WA board to utilise my knowledge and experience to further develop the sport. I believe that clubs (and club coaches) should be first and foremost in this process and will seek to strengthen the ability of clubs to achieve these outcomes. 6
