1 2017 EVERSOURCE HARTFORD MARATHON, HALF MARATHON & 5K TEAM ACHILLES INFORMATION Race day is almost here! It is each athlete, guide, and race-day volunteer s responsibility to be familiar with the race course, terrain, directions, parking and other race regulations found on the HMF website: There is also specific information for athletes with disabilities: PRE-RACE CHECK-LIST: Last-minute accommodations may not be available so please plan ahead for: Training: Get together with your athlete/guide pairings and do some workouts before race day! If you can t meet in person, talk on the phone or by so there are no race day surprises! Tune up your equipment, break in shoes, plan for hydration/nutrition! Don t wait until the last minute! Coordinate carpooling or plan rides in advance. Review directions so you know where to go before race-day jitters kick in (PLAN FOR TRAFFIC!) PRE-RACE TEAM DINNER & PEP RALLY: Thursday, October 12 th 6-8pm at the Thomas Hooker Brewery (16 Tobey Rd. Bloomfield). Join the Team to carbo-load, pick up race packets, and get psyched for race day!! Our traditional raffle of "Stuff from Erin & Grit s Cars and other fun pre-race activities will take place! 2 PACKET PICK-UP: If you did not arrange to have your packet mailed to you, you can pick it up at the Team Pasta Dinner on 10/12 or on race day in the Achilles tent. This applies to both athletes and guides. WHAT TO WEAR: Athletes: As sponsored athletes, you are expected to wear your neon Achilles CT Team t-shirt. Visually impaired athletes must wear their BLIND RUNNER shirts. Guides: Wear your Achilles CT Chapter GUIDE shirt. Race Day Volunteers: Please wear your Achilles CT shirts. If you are coming to the Pasta Dinner you will receive them there; otherwise they will be available on race day! *NOTE: If you need an Achilles CT shirt, please let Grit know ASAP (men s and women s cut) by at membership@achillesct.org or text (860) As the weather can be unpredictable this time of year, please plan accordingly. Achilles shirts must be worn on the OUTSIDE of any layering for visibility. DIRECTIONS & PARKING: Handicap parking on race day is located at 55 Elm St., adjacent to Bushnell Park and the Charity Village. As Elm St. will be closed to traffic, you will enter/exit off Hudson St. (see attached map). You must have your handicap tag visible. Achilles volunteers will be in the parking lot to help you with your equipment to the Team Tent look for our neon shirts in the dark! Anyone without a handicap tag, please see the attached parking map and plan ahead for race day. ARRIVAL: Due to high volume of traffic and road closings, please plan on arriving in Hartford by 6:00 a.m. The lots close to the park will fill up quickly! This will give you time to get your belongings and equipment to the Achilles Tent located in Charity Village in Bushnell Park (see attached map). Our tent is across from the fountain, with easy access from the Elm St. parking lot. ALL TEAM ACHILLES CT ATHLETES, GUIDES, AND RACE DAY VOLUNTEERS MUST MEET AT THE TENT NO LATER THAN 6:30 A.M. Note: We have 2 private ADA port-a-potties for our Team & guests

3 IMPORTANT FOR ATHLETES/GUIDES: Check in at the tent under the sign for race distance in which you are competing. Even if you get your packet at the Team Dinner we need to know you are here! RACE DAY VOLUNTEERS: Check in under the VOLUNTEER sign. BAG CHECK: Bushnell Memorial Hall-Capitol Ave. Personal belongings must be in the official gear bag supplied by HMF and labeled with your name. Each athlete and guide will receive a large, clear plastic bag at packet pickup-no other gear bags will be accepted! For safety and security reasons you must transfer belongings into these bags and check them at the Bushnell. Guides can help assist athletes who cannot get to the Bushnell on your own; check your athlete s bag with yours. NO baggage will be allowed in the Charity Village tent area. The only exception being Disabled Athlete equipment or supplies that is medically necessary for them to have close by. Put these items in the clear bag with your name visible. The tent will be staffed during the race so these items will be secure. There will be a bucket for keys in the tent. TEAM ACHILLES CT PICTURE: 7:00 am in front of the Achilles Tent!! Please be on time and have your Achilles shirt on and visible! START TIMES: The race for wheelchair and hand cycle athletes in the half or full marathon starts at 7:55 8:00 start for all other runners. You will need to be at the front of the starting line no later than 7:30 for inspection by the race director! IMPORTANT: Please click here to see the map of the starting lines so you know where to go, as the starting line for the 5K is different. We have had athletes and guides line up in wrong races, and it is crowded and difficult to maneuver through the crowds; this is why we head out from the tent early! Ambulatory athletes please line up in corrals according to your projected pace/finishing times. HAND CYCLE/WHEELCHAIR ATHLETES: ALL hand cycle and wheelchair athletes will wear timing chips provided and instructed by HMF; at the starting line the race director will help you affix it to the frame. Achilles will provide a flag in the tent if you do not already have one. Each hand cycle/push rim should have a roadside kit should it be needed.

4 New for all wheelchair/hand cycle participants in 2017 (from the AWD link above): For the safety of the athlete and all participants, athlete finish time must not be faster than 1 hour and 45 minutes in the marathon. Finishing faster than this time will disqualify the athlete from the 2017 event and ban them from the 2018 Eversource Hartford Marathon and Half Marathon. ** In the finish area wheelchair/hand cycle participants must not exceed a maximum speed of 5:00 minutes per mile. AWARDS: There are awards for Athletes with Disabilities (AWD) in the following divisions in the 5K, Half Marathon, and Full Marathon: Physically Challenged Division: Awards to top three males/females Wheelchair Division: Awards to top three male/female Visually Impaired/Blind Runners Division: Awards to top three males/females *Per USATF and Paralympic policies, hand cycles are not eligible for awards in road races. NOTE: Per HMF, Divisions must have more than one athlete entered to be eligible for an award; and HMF reserves the right to group divisions to fill fields. Awards will be available for pick up at the Awards Tent in Bushnell Park. POST-RACE: After the race, please proceed back to the Achilles CT Tent in the Charity Village to show us your bling, share your race experiences, and cheer on your teammates as they finish their races. Your family and friends are welcome in the tent before, during, and after the race as well! Athletes and guides have tickets for post-race food/beer. There will also be food & beer for sale in Bushnell Park. Stay by the finish line to cheer other Team Achilles members across the finish line! We have cowbells! NOTE: We have volunteers to assist athletes to the food or award tents, and from Bushnell Park to their vehicles after the race.

5 SCHEDULE OF EVENTS FOR SATURDAY, OCTOBER 14TH 6:00 a.m. Arrive in Hartford to park and unload racing equipment 6:30 a.m. Call time to meet at the Achilles Tent (Charity Village) 7:00 a.m. Team Picture at the Achilles Tent! 7:20 a.m. Wheelchairs head to starting lines! Inspection at 7:30am 7:30 a.m. Ambulatory athletes and guides head to the starting corrals 7:55 a.m. Wheelchair start-half and full marathons 7:59 a.m. Wheelchair start for 5K 8:00 a.m. Races start! 8:30-1:00 pm.
